• JVM Language Summit 2012 - Registration Open

  The 2012 edition of the JVM Languages Summit is Jul 30 - Aug 1, at Oracle's Santa Clara Campus. This is an "an open technical collaboration among language designers, compiler writers, tool builders, runtime engineers, and VM architects". There are presentations, workshops, and lightning talks. • New code release today - 2011.1.4.2

  Wow, two blog entries in the same day! When I wrote the large 'Quota' blog entry below, I did not realize there would be a micro-code update going out the same evening. So here it is. Code 2011.1.4.2 has just been released. You can get the readme file for it here: https://wikis.oracle.com/display/FishWorks/ak-2011.04.24.4.2+Release+Notes Download it, of course, through the MOS website. It looks like it fixes a pretty nasty bug. Get it if you think it applies to you. Unless you have a great reason NOT to upgrade, I would strongly advise you to upgrade to 2011.1.4.2. Why? Because the readme file says they STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU ALL UPGRADE TO THIS CODE IMMEDIATELY using LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS. That's good enough for me. Be sure to run the health check like the readme tells you to.

• Plugins in Ops Center and Cloud Control

  Cloud Control just released an updated plugin for Oracle Virtual Networking, so I thought I'd mention a bit about how both Ops Center and Cloud Control use plugins. On the Ops Center side, we have a plugin to connect Ops Center to Cloud Control, letting them share monitoring data. This guide explains how to install and use that plugin. In Cloud Control, they have a more extensive collection of plugins, letting you link Cloud Control with a variety of other products. The Cloud Control library plug-in tab goes into more detail about how you can use these plugins in your environment.

Is there a certain format they utilize on Programming Requests which helps you to understand exactly how the development team can succeed with this project. Example: I always like it when project managers mock up forms. It helps significantly to know how they are visualizing the UI for many tasks. • Global Adopt a JSR Program Update

  The Global Adopt a JSR program, combining efforts of SouJava and London Java Community,  is an excellent place to get some Java User Group (JUG) resources for JSRs.  It also has the potential to act as an extra set of eyes, ears and volunteers for JSRs. • Java EE 7 support in Eclipse 4.3

  Eclipse Kepler (4.3) features 71 different open source projects and over 58 million LOC. One of the main themes of the release is the support for Java EE 7. Kepler specifically added support for the features mentioned below: Create Java EE 7 Eclipse projects or using Maven New facets for JPA 2.1, JSF 2.2, Servlet 3.1, JAX-RS 2.0, EJB 3.2 Schemas and descriptors updated for Java EE 7 standards (web.xml, application.xml, ejb-jar.xml, etc) Tolerance for JPA 2.1 such as features can be used without causing invalidation and content assist for UI (JPA 2.1) Support for NamedStoredProcedureQuery (JPA 2.1) Schema generation configuration in persistence.xml (JPA 2.1) Updates to persistence.xml editor with the new JPA 2.1 properties Existing features support EE7 (Web Page Editor, Palette, EL content assist, annotations, JSF tags, Facelets, etc) Code generation wizards tolerant of EE7 (New EJB, Servlet, JSP, etc.) A comprehensive list of features added in this release is available in Web Tools Platform 3.5 - New and Noteworthy. • New "How do I ..." series

  Over the last year or so the Optimizer development team has presented at a number of conferences and we got a lot of questions that start with "How do I ...". Where people were looking for a specific command or set of steps to fix a problem they had encountered. So we thought it would be a good idea to create a series of small posts that deal with these "How do I" question directly. We will use a simple example each time, that shows exactly what commands and procedures should be used to address a given problem. If you have an interesting "How do I .." question you would like to see us answer on the blog please email me and we will do our best to answer them! • NASCIO Award for NetBeans Platform Legislative Software

  Two days ago, 23 October 2012, the Kansas Legislative Information System and Services (KLISS) was awarded the 2012 NASCIO Award for Open Government at the NASCIO annual State IT Recognition awards. KLISS is developed by Propylon in partnership with the executive and legislative branches of the Kansas Government involving a complete overhaul of the Legislature's IT systems. This video gives an overview of the system: In other good news, Propylon has recently announced that it will work with the Indiana Legislative Services Agency to implement a complete Legislative Enterprise Architecture. • JET now available on OTN

  I know some of you have been waiting patiently, so I'm pleased to announce that the JET bundle is now available for download on the Oracle Technology Network. I've migrated most of the content from the old Sun wiki site, and got the download in a single handy location on OTN. Download JET now.  The version available is the current latest, which is 4.9.4. This version contains a number of updates, the most significant of which is the ability to specify slot locations instead of the traditional cXtYdZsN nomenclature. This is pretty useful when trying to Jumpstart multiple servers with SAS2.0 based HBAs, as they will have the WWN embedded in the cXtYdZsN name, and it's pretty difficult to guess what that will be until you've booted the server. The JetSDS and JetZFS modules have also been updated to use the slot terminology. Happy JETing,

• Why CoffeeScript is an issue

  Other than some obvious concerns, my main concern is support in the open source community. "anon" from the CoffeeScript team sent this to me after I requested input from the team to concerns I raised and wanted to get others' take on it:"Thanks for confirming that only idiots willingly program in Java and C#"or the following from the same person:"Oh and finally, you should definitely create jShort. Even though I know you will fail before you even start, I would love to laugh at your attempts and it would be perfect for you since you ride the short bus. "This kind of comment reflects badly on the CoffeeScript team and hence not an option for us as a company to consider. Another example of why some open-source community projects get no traction.

That annoying! And also in a Visual Studio mixed editions team that’s too specific for the ultimate edition. As good as Visual Studio in most cases is, sometimes it is really far away from professional coding fundamentals and best practices.

• Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 2)

  To start out our ghost hunting here at the Oracle Santa Clara campus office, we first need a ghost sensor. It's pretty easy to build one, since all we need to do is to create a circuit that can detect small fluctuations in the electromagnetic field, just like the fluctuations that ghosts cause when they pass by... Naturally, right? So, we build a static charge sensor and will use a Java Embedded app to monitor for changes in the sensor value, running analytics using Java technology on a Raspberry Pi. Bob's your uncle, and there you have it: a ghost sensor. See: Ghost Detector So, go out to Radio Shack and buy up these items: shopping list: 1 - NTE312 JFET N-channel transistor (this is in place of the MPF-102) 1 - Set of Jumper Wires 1 - LED 1 - 300 ohm resistor 1 - set of header pins Then, grab a flashlight, your Raspberry Pi, and come back here for more instructions... • GlassFish Downloads - Where? (reminder)

At the time of this writing (Nov. 2011), the latest stable release is GlassFish 3.1.1 (open source bits, supported Oracle GlassFish Server).
