  If Gmail’s icon-based buttons annoy you, it’s now possible to switch them back to the old text labels with a simple settings toggle. At MakeUseOf they highlight the new option in Gmail and how you can switch back to the old button layout: So how do you make that happen? All you have to do is click on the cog button, choose “Settings”, and go to the the General tab. Scroll down to find the “Button labels” setting, and change it from icons to text. • How can I make a DateTimePicker display an empty string?

  I would like to be able to display a DateTimePicker that has a default value of nothing, i.e. no date. For example, I have a start date dtTaskStart and an end date dtTaskEnd for a task, but the end date is not known, and not populated initially. I have specified a custom format of yyyy-MM-dd for both controls. Setting the value to null, or an empty string at runtime causes an error, so how can I accomplish this? I have considered using a checkbox to control the enabling of this field, but there is still the issue of displaying an initial value.. Edit: Arguably a duplicate of the question DateTimePicker Null Value (.NET), but the solution I found for my problem is not a solution for that question, so I think it should remain here for others to find..

• Linq to xml not able to add new elements

  We save our xml in a "text" field in the database. So first I check if it exist any xml, if not I create a new xdocument, fill it with the necessary xml. else i just add the new element. • ListView adapter data change without ListView being notified

  I've written a ListActivity that has a custom list adapter. The list is being updated from a ContentProvider when onCreate is run. I also have a service that gets started when I run the app and it first updates the ContentProvider, then sends a Broadcast that the content has been updated. My ListActivity recieves the broadcast and tries to update my ListView. My problem is, I'm getting intermittent errors about the ListView adapter data changing without the ListView being notified. I call the notifyDataSetChanged() method on my list adapter right after I update it. What it seems like is happening is the list is still in the process of being updated after first call in onCreate when it recieves the broadcast from the service to update, so it tries to update my ListView before it's finished updating from it's first run. Does this make sense? Here is some of my code. • Reuseable Platform For Custom Board Game

  Is there a generic platform to allow me to customize the rules to a board game. The board game uses a square grid, similar to Checkers or Chess. I was hoping to take some of the work out of creating this computer opponent, by reusing what is already written. I would think that there would be a pre-written routine for deciding which moves would lead to the best outcome, and all that I would need to program is the pieces, legal moves, what layout constitutes a win/lose or draw, and perhaps some kind of scoring for value of pieces. I have seen chess programs that appear to use a recursive routine, so they think anywhere from 2 to 20 moves ahead to create varying degrees of difficulty. I have noticed this on chess.com. The game I am programming will not be as complex. Is there a platform designed to be re-used for different grid/piece based games. JavaScript would be preferable, but Java or Perl would be acceptable.

• Problems with retrieving the correct cookie in Java

  When I retrieve the cookies in my java servlet, all of the values from getPath() are null. So if a cookie with the same name is set in directory /foo, and at the root directory, I retrieve two cookies with the same exact name, but I can't differentiate them because getPath() returns null for both. I looked in firebug and saw that firefox was not sending anythign for the path. My application uses a "rememberme" cookie with the path set to "/". Everything works fine as long as there is only one cookie with name rememberme. But if somehow another cookie gets set with the same name on a different path like /foo, then my application won't know which one is the one I set for the root. How can I differentiate the cookies? Do I need to worry about a cookie existing with the same name in a subdir, or can I just assume there will be only the one I set?

• How can I make these images download on a seperate thread?

  Hello!! I have the following code running on my Android device. It works great and displays my list items wonderfully. It's also clever in the fact it only downloads the data when it's needed by the ArrayAdapter. However, whilst the download of the thumbnail is occurring, the entire list stalls and you cannot scroll until it's finished downloading. Is there any way of threading this so it'll still scroll happily, maybe show a place holder for the downloading image, finish the download, and then show? Any help with this would be really apreciated. Thank-you kindly. The question I have is about double pointers and their auto_ptr equivalent, if that makes sense. I have a function that accepts a double pointer as its parameter and the function allocates resources for it: void foo ( Image** img ) { ... *img = new Image(); ...} This function is then used like this: Image* img = NULL; foo ( &img ); ... delete img; I want to use auto_ptr to avoid having to call delete explicitly.   I have the following script which I use to give me a simple "diff" between tables on two different databases. (Note: In reality my comparison is on a lot more than just an ID) SELECT MyTableA.MyId, MyTableB.MyId FROM MyDataBaseA..MyTable MyTableA FULL OUTER JOIN MyDataBaseB..MyTable MyTableB ON MyTableA.MyId = MyTableB.MyId WHERE MyTableA.MyId IS NULL OR MyTableB.MyId IS NULL I now need to run this script on two databases that exist on different servers. At the moment my solution is to backup the database from one server, restore it to the other and then run the script. I'm pretty sure this is possible, however, is this likely to be a can of worms? This is a very rare task I need to perform and if it involves a large number of DB setting changes then I will probably stick to my backup method.

  I'm running an insert statement using OLE DB and an ICommandWithParameters. In the ICommandText, I made sure to set: params.cParamSets = n ; Then cmdTxt-Execute( NULL, IID_NULL, ¶ms, &rowsAffected, NULL ) ; Where n 1, but in my database, all I see is 1 insert happening. The docs say cParamSets is greater than one) can be specified only if DBPROP_MULTIPLEPARAMSETS is VARIANT_TRUE and the command does not return any rowsets. But I set DBPROP_MULTIPLEPARAMSETS in my DBPROPs, and its and INSERT statement so it should not return any rowsets.

  I don't normally go to stackoverflow for sigsegv errors, but I have done all I can with my debugger at the moment. The segmentation fault error is thrown following the completion of the function. Any ideas what I'm overlooking? I suspect that it is due to the casting of the sockaddr to the sockaddr_in, but I am unable to find any mistakes there. • What is the proper way to resolve Eclipse warning "isn't parameterized"?

  I'm trying to clean up some warnings in some old Java code (in Eclipse), and I'm unsure what the proper thing to do is in this case. The block looks more or less like this: Transferable content = getToolkit().getSystemClipboard().getContents( null ); java.util.List clipboardFileList = null; if( content.isDataFlavorSupported( DataFlavor.javaFileListFlavor ) ) { try { clipboardFileList = (java.util.List)content.getTransferData( DataFlavor.javaFileListFlavor); } /* Do other crap, etc. */ } The List generates a warning as it isn't parameterized, however, if I parameterize it with <File>, which I'm pretty sure is what it requires, it complains that it can't convert from Object to List<File>. I could merely suppress the unchecked warning for the function, but would prefer to avoid that if there is a "good" solution. Thoughts?

• Scala Lift - Robust method to protect files from hotlinking

  I'm attempting to implement a way to stop hotlinking and/or un-authorised access to resources within my app. The method I'm trying to add is something I've used before in PHP apps. Basically a session is set when the page is first called. The images are added to the page via the image tag with the session value as a parameter: <img src="/files/image/[handle]?session=12345" /> When the image is requested the script checks to see if the session is set and matches the provided value. If the condition is not met the serving page returns null. Right at the end to the code I unset the session so further requests from outside the scope of the page will return null. What would be the best implementation of this method within the lift framework? Thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated :)

  I'm translating an API from C to C#, and one of the functions allocates a number of related objects, some of which are optional. The C version accepts several pointer parameters which are used to return integer handles to the objects, and the caller can pass NULL for some of the pointers to avoid allocating those objects: void initialize(int *mainObjPtr, int *subObjPtr, int *anotherSubObjPtr); initialize(&mainObj, &subObj, NULL); For the C# version, the obvious translation would use out parameters instead of pointers: public static void Initialize(out int mainObj, out int subObj, out int anotherSubObj); ... but this leaves no way to indicate which objects are unwanted. Are there any well-known examples of C# APIs doing something similar that I could imitate? If not, any suggestions?
