• Why doesn't my cursor change to an Hourglass in my FindDialog in Delphi?

  I am simply opening my FindDialog with: FindDialog.Execute; In my FindDialog.OnFind event, I want to change the cursor to an hourglass for searches through large files, which may take a few seconds. So in the OnFind event I do this: Screen.Cursor := crHourglass; (code that searches for the text and displays it) ... Screen.Cursor := crDefault; What happens is while searching for the text, the cursor properly changes to the hourglass (or rotating circle in Vista) and then back to the pointer when the search is completed. However, this only happens on the main form. It does not happen on the FindDialog itself. The default cursor remains on the FindDialog during the search. While the search is happening if I move the cursor over the FindDialog it changes to the default, and if I move it off and over the main form it becomes the hourglass. This does not seem like what is supposed to happen. Am I doing something wrong or does something special need to be done to get the cursor to be the hourglass on all forms? For reference, I'm using Delphi 2009.

  Hello, I'm looking for Javascript code for letting the user draw a line (on an image). Just as the line tool in Photoshop (for example): The user clicks on the image, drags the mouse (while the line between the start point and the mouse point is dynamically drawn on mouse drag). I would also need a callable function to send the page the start and end coordinates. I've found this very nice script for area selection: http://www.defusion.org.uk/code/javascript-image-cropper-ui-using-prototype-scriptaculous/ and I've found many script for drawing lines (and other shapes in JS), but could not find what I'm looking for. • Flash video slooow in AIR 2 HTMLLoader component

  I am working on a full screen kiosk application in Flex 4/Air 2 using Flash Builder 4. We have a company training website which staff can access via the kiosk, and the main content is interactive flash training videos. Our target machines are by no means 'beefy', they are Atom n270s @ 1.6Ghz with 1Gb RAM. As it stands the videos are all but unusable when used from within the Air application, the application becomes completely unresponsive (100% cpu usage, click events take approx 5-10 seconds to register). So far I have tried: increasing the default frame rate from 24fps to 60. No improvement. nativeWindow.stage.frameRate = 60; running the videos in a stripped down version of my app, just a full screen HTMLLoader component pointed at the training website. No better than before. disabled hyper threading. The Atom CPU is split into two virtual cores, and the AIR app was only able to use one thread so maxed out at 50% CPU usage. Since the kiosk will only run the AIR app I am happy to loose hyper threading to increase the performance of the Air app. Marginal Improvement. The same website with the same videos is responsive if viewed in ie7 on the same machine, although Internet Explorer takes advantage of the CPU’s hyper threading. The flash videos are built with Adobe Captivate and from what I understand employee JavaScript to relay results back to the server. I will add more information about the video content asap as the training guru is back in the office later this week.

• Wrapping a C# service in a console app to debug it.

  I want to debug a service written in C# and the old fashioned way is just too long. I have to stop the service, start my application that uses the service in debug mode (Visual studio 2008), start the service, attach to the service process and then navigate in my Asp.Net application to trigger the service. I basically have the service running in the background, waiting for a task. The web application will trigger a task to be picked up by the service. What I would like to do is to have a console application that fires the service in an effort for me to debug. Is there any simple demo that anybody knows about? Thank you Jack

• Mac OS X Development.

  Hi All, I would love to begin developing applications for the MAC OS X, although I have to idea where to start. Problem: I currently do not, and cannot afford a new MAC OS X-based computer. Solution: A very good friend loves trying out things that I've made for Windows, and also owns a MAC OS X computer, and is willing to test these new creations. Now I am faced with another problem. I don't know which language to use to develop these apps in. I am a .NET Developer and seeing as though I can only use a Windows based PC to develop MAC apps, where should I start? I've heard of Mono, and have used it on Linux before, would Mono be an option for MAC development on a Windows based computer, too? Are there any other ways around this? • Is it worth moving from stored procedures to linq ?

  I'm looking at standardizing programming in an organisaiton. Half uses stored procedures and the other half Linq. From what i've read there is still some debate going on on this topic. My concern is that MS is trying to slip in it's own proprietry query language 'linq' to make SQL redundant. If a few years back microsoft had tried to win customers from oracle and sybase with their MSSQL database and stated that it didn't use SQL by their own proprietry query langues ie linq. I doubt many would have switched. I believe that is exactly what is happening now by introducting it into the applicaiton business layer. I have used MS for many years but there is one gripe that I have with them and that is that they change their direction a lot. By a lot I mean new releases of .net, silverlight etc are more than 30% different from previous version. So by the time you become productive a new release is on the way. As things stand now a web developer using .net would need to know either vb.net or c#, xml, xaml,javascript,html, sql and now linq. That doesn't make for good productivity in my books. My concern is that once we all start using linq MS will start changing it between releases. and it will become an ever changing landscape. I believe that 'linq to sql' has already been deprecated. At leas with SQL we are dealing with a more stable and standardized language. Are we looking at a programming revolution or a marketing campaign? As far as I know other languages like Cobol have stayed the same for years. A cobol program from 20 years ago could pick up todays code and start working on it. Could a Vb3 person work on a modern .net web app ? Would these large changes need to be made if the underlying original foundation had been sound ? I worry about following MS shaking roadmap with it's deadends and double backs. are there any architects out there who feel the same ? regards Josef

• iPhone: TableView inside UIScrollview, show vaccillating scrollbars around

  Hi, I have added some table and other vies in a scrollview. scrolling in tables are working fine. But in the parent scrollview, when scrolling, a vacillating vertical scrollbars are shown, sometimes it even come to the middle of the screen. sometime show at the left side of the screen. and not limited to the vertical scrollbar region. When I set tje showsVerticalScrollIndicator = NO, it is not shown. But do you know why the scrollbar is moving around. • Why is my sound not working in Flash?

  This is what I have as far as code, it is in the first frame of the movie. nature = new Sound(this); nature.attachSound("sound_naturally"); nature.setVolume(50); nature.start(0,0); nature.onSoundComplete = function(){ nature.start(0,0); } trace(nature); The trace outputs '[object Object]' at runtime. I have the sound exporting to ActionScript with the link identifier 'sound_naturally', not exported to the first frame. I don't understand why it's not working. I did like the exact same thing like 3 hours ago and it worked fine, but I lost the file so I had to redo it and now it won't work at all. Using Flash 10 with ActionScript 2.0

• Troubles Iterating Over A HashMap with JSF, MyFaces & Facelets

  Hi all, I'm having some trouble looping over a HashMap to print out it's values to the screen. Could someone double check my code to see what I'm doing wrong. I can't seem to find anything wrong but there must be something. In a servlet, I am adding the following to the request: Map<String, String> facetValues = new HashMap<String, String>(); // Filling the map req.setAttribute(facetField.getName(), facetValues); In one case "facetField.getName()" evaluates to "discipline". So in my page I have the following: <ui:repeat value="${requestScope.discipline}" var="item"> <li>Item: <c:out value="${item}"/>, Key: <c:out value="${item.key}"/>, Value: <c:out value="${item.item}"/></li> </ui:repeat> The loop is ran once but all the outputs are blank?!? I would have at least expected something in item if it's gone over the loop once. Checking the debug popup for Facelets, discipline is there and on the loop. Printing it to the screen results in something that looks like a map to me (I've shortened the output) : {300=0, 1600=0, 200=0, ... , 2200=0} I've also tried with a c:forEach but I'm getting the same results. So does anyone have any ideas where I'm going wrong? Thanks for any input, Lee

• Run a PHP-script from a PHP-script without blocking

  I'm building a spider which will traverse various sites and data mining them. Since I need to get each page separately this could take a VERY long time (maybe 100 pages). I've already set the set_time_limit to be 2 minutes per page but it seems like apache will kill the script after 5 minutes no matter. This isn't usually a problem since this will run from cron or something similar which does not have this time limit. However I would also like the admins to be able to start a fetch manually via a HTTP-interface. It is not important that apache is kept alive for the full duration, I'm, going to use AJAX to trigger a fetch and check back once in a while with AJAX. My problem is how to start the fetch from within a PHP-script without the fetch being terminated when the script calling it dies. Maybe I could use system('script.php &') but I'm not sure it will do the trick. Any other ideas?

• Broken flash movie player! allowFullScreen does not work with anything other than a wmode value of "

  I have a flash player on a page which plays videos. I also have modal popups which need to be able to display over the top of the flash player when they are opened, etc... I can't change either of these requirements since they are part of the spec I have been given. Flash seems to ignore z-indexes I set on it with css, and the modal popups will therefore only appear above the video player if I set the video player's wmode to opaque or transparent. However, if I do this then the full screen functionality stops working correctly: when I un-fullscreen the video it stays zoomed in. In short If you open a popup on an item page or another page containing flash the popup should be displayed above this. Flash ignores z-index values. You can stop flash ignoring z-index values by setting wmode to opaque or transparent rather than the default: window. This stops full screen from working correctly. Has anybody else faced this issue before? What can I do to fix it? I was thinking of recreating the video player with wmode=opaque whenever I opened a modal popup and then switching it back to wmode=window when the modal popup is closed, since this would mean that the popup should display above it (as wmode=opaque) and the fullscreen should work correct (as wmode=window). However, this is not ideal at all: as well as being a hack it would also mean that the video would stop playing if somebody clicked a button which opened a popup. Cheers!

  This question is related to my previous question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2376027/how-to-generate-cartesian-coordinate-x-y-from-gridbaglayout I have successfully get the coordinate of each pictures, however when I checked the coordinate through (System.out.println) and the placement of the images on the screen, it seems to be wrong. e.g. if on the screen it was obvious that the x point of the first picture is on cell 2 which is on coordinate of 20, but the program shows x=1. • Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation. • Touch coordinates in iPhone landscape mode app

  I am trying to make this landscape only iphone app. I only use this code for this purpose: - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight); } However when I click clip subviews checkbox from interface builder, the view is clipped from the middle. I also don't receive any touch events from outside of view bounds obviously. - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { CGPoint fingerPos = [[touches anyObject] locationInView:self.view]; NSLog(@"%f %f",fingerPos.x,fingerPos.y); } only prints for coordinates between 20 and 320 for X. But Y works fine. When i try to modify bounds by hand, everything works fine; View is positioned and shown correctly, printed coordinates are correct, I receive touch from all of the screen except between 0 and 20 for X. So Left side of the screen is unresponsive to touch events for only 20 pixels. Code I use to modify bounds: self.view.bounds = CGRectMake(-180.0f, 0.0f, 680.0f, 480.0f); What might be causing this? • NFS issue brings down entire vSphere ESX estate

  I experienced an odd issue this morning where an NFS issue appeared to have taken down the majority of my VMs hosted on a small vSphere 5.0 estate. The infrastructure itself is 4x IBM HS21 blades running around 20 VMs. The storage is provided by a single HP X1600 array with attached D2700 chassis running Solaris 11. There's a couple of storage pools on this which are exposed over NFS for the storage of the VM files, and some iSCSI LUNs for things like MSCS shared disks. Normally, this is pretty stable, but I appreciate the lack of resiliancy in having a single X1600 doing all the storage. It turned out that pretty much all of the VMs were inaccessible, and that the ESX hosts either were describing each VM as 'powered off', 'powered on', or 'unavailable'. The VMs described as 'powered on' where not in any way reachable or responding to pings, so this may be lies. There's absolutely no indication on the X1600 that anything was awry, and nothing on the switches to indicate any loss of connectivity. I only managed to resolve the issue by rebooting the ESX hosts in turn. I have a number of questions: What the hell happened? If this was a temporary NFS failure, why did it put the ESX hosts into a state from which a reboot was the only recovery? In the future, when the NFS server goes a little off-piste, what would be the best approach to add some resilience? I've been looking at budgeting for next year and potentially have budget to purchase another X1600/D2700/disks, would an identical mirrored disk setup help to mitigate these sorts of failures automatically? • Opencv application crashes at runtime with error code 0x0000142

  I have openCV and minGW installed with codeblock IDE following the instructions found here http://kevinhughes.ca/tutorials/opencv-install-on-windows-with-codeblocks-and-mingw/ i tried the simple image loading program in the article and the build process went fine. but when i tried running the output program, it crashes with the error message "the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application." I used Dependency Walker to see if the program failed to load dll module and here's the output screen of Dependency Walker https://www.dropbox.com/s/f9iaftdt8atjwpl/Screenshot%202013-11-05%2022.21.45.png i am not used to DW but as i can see in its output screen, some openCV dll failed to load and the loaded Windows DLL were 64 bit instead of 32 bit (as minGW is 32 bit). I can't figure out why as i already configure the Path environment variable for the bin directory of openCV and the app still can not load the dll modules. And i think that Windows will automatically load the proper 32 bit DLLs when a 32 bit app is run but this situation the app still failed to load. Anyone has ideas?

• Java Windows Service with Procrun, StopMethod problem

  My Java class contains the following methods: public static void main(String[] argv) //start the service public static void stop() //stop the service I'm using Procrun from Apache Commons Daemon to setup the Java class as a Windows Service. I get an error when I try to stop the service "[618 javajni.c] [error] Static method 'void main(String[])' in Class com/caphyon/service/JavaService not found". The problem is I am trying to call the stop method when the service is shutting down, but it appears to override the StopMethod with 'void main(String[])'.
