• Seeking on a Heap, and Two Useful DMVs

  So far in this mini-series on seeks and scans, we have seen that a simple ‘seek’ operation can be much more complex than it first appears.  A seek can contain one or more seek predicates – each of which can either identify at most one row in a unique index (a singleton lookup) or a range of values (a range scan).  When looking at a query plan, we will often need to look at the details of the seek operator in the Properties window to see how many operations it is performing, and what type of operation each one is.  As you saw in the first post in this series, the number of hidden seeking operations can have an appreciable impact on performance. Measuring Seeks and Scans I mentioned in my last post that there is no way to tell from a graphical query plan whether you are seeing a singleton lookup or a range scan.  You can work it out – if you happen to know that the index is defined as unique and the seek predicate is an equality comparison, but there’s no separate property that says ‘singleton lookup’ or ‘range scan’.  This is a shame, and if I had my way, the query plan would show different icons for range scans and singleton lookups – perhaps also indicating whether the operation was one or more of those operations underneath the covers. In light of all that, you might be wondering if there is another way to measure how many seeks of either type are occurring in your system, or for a particular query.  As is often the case, the answer is yes – we can use a couple of dynamic management views (DMVs): sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats and sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats. Index Usage Stats The index usage stats DMV contains counts of index operations from the perspective of the Query Executor (QE) – the SQL Server component that is responsible for executing the query plan.  It has three columns that are of particular interest to us: user_seeks – the number of times an Index Seek operator appears in an executed plan user_scans – the number of times a Table Scan or Index Scan operator appears in an executed plan user_lookups – the number of times an RID or Key Lookup operator appears in an executed plan An operator is counted once per execution (generating an estimated plan does not affect the totals), so an Index Seek that executes 10,000 times in a single plan execution adds 1 to the count of user seeks.  Even less intuitively, an operator is also counted once per execution even if it is not executed at all.  I will show you a demonstration of each of these things later in this post. Index Operational Stats The index operational stats DMV contains counts of index and table operations from the perspective of the Storage Engine (SE).  It contains a wealth of interesting information, but the two columns of interest to us right now are: range_scan_count – the number of range scans (including unrestricted full scans) on a heap or index structure singleton_lookup_count – the number of singleton lookups in a heap or index structure This DMV counts each SE operation, so 10,000 singleton lookups will add 10,000 to the singleton lookup count column, and a table scan that is executed 5 times will add 5 to the range scan count. The Test Rig To explore the behaviour of seeks and scans in detail, we will need to create a test environment.  The scripts presented here are best run on SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition, but the majority of the tests will work just fine on SQL Server 2005.  A couple of tests use partitioning, but these will be skipped if you are not running an Enterprise-equivalent SKU.  Ok, first up we need a database: USE master; GO IF DB_ID('ScansAndSeeks') IS NOT NULL DROP DATABASE ScansAndSeeks; GO CREATE DATABASE ScansAndSeeks; GO USE ScansAndSeeks; GO ALTER DATABASE ScansAndSeeks SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION OFF ; ALTER DATABASE ScansAndSeeks SET AUTO_CLOSE OFF, AUTO_SHRINK OFF, AUTO_CREATE_STATISTICS OFF, AUTO_UPDATE_STATISTICS OFF, PARAMETERIZATION SIMPLE, READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT OFF, RESTRICTED_USER ; Notice that several database options are set in particular ways to ensure we get meaningful and reproducible results from the DMVs.  In particular, the options to auto-create and update statistics are disabled.  There are also three stored procedures, the first of which creates a test table (which may or may not be partitioned).  The table is pretty much the same one we used yesterday: The table has 100 rows, and both the key_col and data columns contain the same values – the integers from 1 to 100 inclusive.  The table is a heap, with a non-clustered primary key on key_col, and a non-clustered non-unique index on the data column.  The only reason I have used a heap here, rather than a clustered table, is so I can demonstrate a seek on a heap later on.  The table has an extra column (not shown because I am too lazy to update the diagram from yesterday) called padding – a CHAR(100) column that just contains 100 spaces in every row.  It’s just there to discourage SQL Server from choosing table scan over an index + RID lookup in one of the tests. The top result set comes from the Index Usage Stats DMV, so it is the Query Executor’s (QE) view.  The lower result is from Index Operational Stats, which shows statistics derived from the actions taken by the Storage Engine (SE).  We see that QE performed 1 scan operation on the heap, and SE performed a single range scan.  Let’s try a single-value equality seek on a unique index next: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT key_col FROM Example WHERE key_col = 32'; This time we see a single seek on the non-clustered primary key from QE, and one singleton lookup on the same index by the SE.  Now for a single-value seek on the non-unique non-clustered index: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT data FROM Example WHERE data = 32'; QE shows a single seek on the non-clustered non-unique index, but SE shows a single range scan on that index – not the singleton lookup we saw in the previous test.  That makes sense because we know that only a single-value seek into a unique index is a singleton seek.  A single-value seek into a non-unique index might retrieve any number of rows, if you think about it.  The next query is equivalent to the IN list example seen in the first post in this series, but it is written using OR (just for variety, you understand): EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT data FROM Example WHERE data = 32 OR data = 33'; The plan looks the same, and there’s no difference in the stats recorded by QE, but the SE shows two range scans.  Again, these are range scans because we are looking for two values in the data column, which is covered by a non-unique index.  I’ve added a snippet from the Properties window to show that the query plan does show two seek predicates, not just one.  Now let’s rewrite the query using BETWEEN: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT data FROM Example WHERE data BETWEEN 32 AND 33'; Notice the seek operator only has one predicate now – it’s just a single range scan from 32 to 33 in the index – as the SE output shows.  For the next test, we will look up four values in the key_col column: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT key_col FROM Example WHERE key_col IN (2,4,6,8)'; Just a single seek on the PK from the Query Executor, but four singleton lookups reported by the Storage Engine – and four seek predicates in the Properties window.  On to a more complex example: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT * FROM Example WITH (INDEX([PK dbo.Example key_col])) WHERE key_col BETWEEN 1 AND 8'; This time we are forcing use of the non-clustered primary key to return eight rows.  The index is not covering for this query, so the query plan includes an RID lookup into the heap to fetch the data and padding columns.  The QE reports a seek on the PK and a lookup on the heap.  The SE reports a single range scan on the PK (to find key_col values between 1 and 8), and eight singleton lookups on the heap.  Remember that a bookmark lookup (RID or Key) is a seek to a single value in a ‘unique index’ – it finds a row in the heap or cluster from a unique RID or clustering key – so that’s why lookups are always singleton lookups, not range scans. Our next example shows what happens when a query plan operator is not executed at all: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT key_col FROM Example WHERE key_col = 8 AND @@TRANCOUNT < 0'; The Filter has a start-up predicate which is always false (if your @@TRANCOUNT is less than zero, call CSS immediately).  The index seek is never executed, but QE still records a single seek against the PK because the operator appears once in an executed plan.  The SE output shows no activity at all.  This next example is 2008 and above only, I’m afraid: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT * FROM Example WHERE key_col BETWEEN 1 AND 30', @Partitioned = 'true'; This is the first example to use a partitioned table.  QE reports a single seek on the heap (yes – a seek on a heap), and the SE reports two range scans on the heap.  SQL Server knows (from the partitioning definition) that it only needs to look at partitions 1 and 2 to find all the rows where key_col is between 1 and 30 – the engine seeks to find the two partitions, and performs a range scan seek on each partition. The final example for today is another seek on a heap – try to work out the output of the query before running it!   As a database architect, developer, and consultant, there are many questions that can be answered. One, though I was asked recently and still can't answer good, is... "What is one of, or some of, the best methods or techniques to keep database changes documented, organized, and yet able to roll out effectively either in a single-developer or multi-developer environment." This may involve stored procedures and other object scripts, but especially schemas - from documentation, to the new physical update scripts, to rollout, and then full-circle. There are applications to make this happen, but require schema hooks and overhead. I would rather like to know about techniques used without a lot of extra third-party involvement.

• Compiler optimization of repeated accessor calls

  I've found recently that for some types of financial calculations that the following pattern is much easier to follow and test especially in situations where we may need to get numbers from various stages of the computation. public class nonsensical_calculator { ... double _rate; int _term; int _days; double monthlyRate { get { return _rate / 12; }} public double days { get { return (1 - i); }} double ar { get { return (1+ days) /(monthlyRate * days) double bleh { get { return Math.Pow(ar - days, _term) public double raar { get { return bleh * ar/2 * ar / days; }} .... } Obviously this often results in multiple calls to the same accessor within a given formula. I was curious as to whether or not the compiler is smart enough to optimize away these repeated calls with no intervening change in state, or whether this style is causing a decent performance hit.   Hi, I am trying to create an item list, diffrent for each i and j variable. How can I make this programme run?

• Boost Thread Specific Storage Question (boost/thread/tss.hpp)

  The boost threading library has an abstraction for thread specific (local) storage. I have skimmed over the source code and it seems that the TSS functionality can be used in an application with any existing thread regardless of weather it was created from boost::thread --i.e., this implies that certain callbacks are registered with the kernel to hook in a callback function that may call the destructor of any TSS objects when the thread or process is going out of scope. I have found these callbacks. I need to cache HMAC_CTX's from OpenSSL inside the worker threads of various web-servers (see this, detailed, question for what I am trying to do), and as such I do not controll the life-time of the thread -- the web-server does. Therefore I will use the TSS functionality on threads not created by boost::thread. I just wanted to validate my assumptions before I started implementing the caching logic, are there any flaws in my logic ?

In order to solve this problem we created a simple component, it has a method that receives the current query (could be an empty query also) and appends the expression you want to that query. • 'schema' design for a social network

  I'm working on a proof of concept app for a twitter style social network with about 500k users. I'm unsure of how best to design the 'schema' should I embed a user's subscriptions or have a separate 'subscriptions' collection and use db references? If I embed, I still have to perform a query to get all of a user's followers. e.g. Given the following user: { "username" : "alan", "photo": "123.jpg", "subscriptions" : [ {"username" : "john", "status" : "accepted"}, {"username" : "paul", "status" : "pending"} ] } to find all of alan's subscribers, I'd have to run something like this: db.users.find({'subscriptions.username' : 'alan'}); from a performance point of view, is that any worse or better than having a separate subscriptions collection? also, when displaying a list of subscriptions/subscribers, I am currently having problems with n+1 because the subscription document tells me the username of the target user but not other attributes I may need such as the profile photo.   I have a bunch of long-running scripts and applications that are storing output results in a directory shared amongst a few users. I would like a way to make sure that every file and directory created under this shared directory automatically had u=rwxg=rwxo=r permissions. I know that I could use umask 006 at the head off my various scripts, but I don't like that approach as many users write their own scripts and may forget to set the umask themselves. I really just want the filesystem to set newly created files and directories with a certain permission if it is in a certain folder. Is this at all possible? Update: I think it can be done with POSIX ACLs, using the Default ACL functionality, but it's all a bit over my head at the moment. If anybody can explain how to use Default ACLs it would probably answer this question nicely.

  A friend of mine has created a movie for my site, it's in .flv format. I've heard of the popular flash player called flowplayer, but I have a bad feeling such a player will not work on the ipad and other devices which do not support flash. Is there a way to play a video in the flash format through a non-flash player so that the content can be viewed on all devices? I'm open to any ideas.   Hello, to initialize a javascript loaded grid, I need to pass a list of values from controller/gsp. Since the javascript is activated once the page is rendered/loaded, there may not be a direct way to do it. 2 possibilities 1. do an ajax call, and retrieve the list of values from the server 2. store the list in html as a hidden element, and read it from javascript. option 2 seems better as it avoids few calls back to server. So, which control should I use for a list of values? Any jQuery code snippet to read it back into array/list. thanks in advance.

How does file "know" the encoding, or, alternatively, how does it guess it? Thanks.

• T-SQL Dynamic SQL and Temp Tables

  It looks like #temptables created using dynamic SQL via the EXECUTE string method have a different scope and can't be referenced by "fixed" SQLs in the same stored procedure. However, I can reference a temp table created by a dynamic SQL statement in a subsequence dynamic SQL but it seems that a stored procedure does not return a query result to a calling client unless the SQL is fixed. A simple 2 table scenario: I have 2 tables. Let's call them Orders and Items. Order has a Primary key of OrderId and Items has a Primary Key of ItemId. Items.OrderId is the foreign key to identify the parent Order. An Order can have 1 to n Items. I want to be able to provide a very flexible "query builder" type interface to the user to allow the user to select what Items he want to see. The filter criteria can be based on fields from the Items table and/or from the parent Order table. If an Item meets the filter condition including and condition on the parent Order if one exists, the Item should be return in the query as well as the parent Order. Usually, I suppose, most people would construct a join between the Item table and the parent Order tables. I would like to perform 2 separate queries instead. One to return all of the qualifying Items and the other to return all of the distinct parent Orders. The reason is two fold and you may or may not agree. The first reason is that I need to query all of the columns in the parent Order table and if I did a single query to join the Orders table to the Items table, I would be repoeating the Order information multiple times. Since there are typically a large number of items per Order, I'd like to avoid this because it would result in much more data being transfered to a fat client. Instead, as mentioned, I would like to return the two tables individually in a dataset and use the two tables within to populate a custom Order and child Items client objects. (I don't know enough about LINQ or Entity Framework yet. I build my objects by hand). The second reason I would like to return two tables instead of one is because I already have another procedure that returns all of the Items for a given OrderId along with the parent Order and I would like to use the same 2-table approach so that I could reuse the client code to populate my custom Order and Client objects from the 2 datatables returned. What I was hoping to do was this: Construct a dynamic SQL string on the Client which joins the orders table to the Items table and filters appropriate on each table as specified by the custom filter created on the Winform fat-client app. The SQL build on the client would have looked something like this: TempSQL = " INSERT INTO #ItemsToQuery OrderId, ItemsId FROM Orders, Items WHERE Orders.OrderID = Items.OrderId AND /* Some unpredictable Order filters go here */ AND /* Some unpredictable Items filters go here */ " Then, I would call a stored procedure, CREATE PROCEDURE GetItemsAndOrders(@tempSql as text) Execute (@tempSQL) --to create the #ItemsToQuery table SELECT * FROM Items WHERE Items.ItemId IN (SELECT ItemId FROM #ItemsToQuery) SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.OrderId IN (SELECT DISTINCT OrderId FROM #ItemsToQuery) The problem with this approach is that #ItemsToQuery table, since it was created by dynamic SQL, is inaccessible from the following 2 static SQLs and if I change the static SQLs to dynamic, no results are passed back to the fat client. 3 around come to mind but I'm look for a better one: 1) The first SQL could be performed by executing the dynamically constructed SQL from the client. The results could then be passed as a table to a modified version of the above stored procedure. I am familiar with passing table data as XML. If I did this, the stored proc could then insert the data into a temporary table using a static SQL that, because it was created by dynamic SQL, could then be queried without issue. (I could also investigate into passing the new Table type param instead of XML.) However, I would like to avoid passing up potentially large lists to a stored procedure. 2) I could perform all the queries from the client. The first would be something like this: SELECT Items.* FROM Orders, Items WHERE Order.OrderId = Items.OrderId AND (dynamic filter) SELECT Orders.* FROM Orders, Items WHERE Order.OrderId = Items.OrderId AND (dynamic filter) This still provides me with the ability to reuse my client sided object-population code because the Orders and Items continue to be returned in two different tables. I have a feeling to, that I might have some options using a Table data type within my stored proc, but that is also new to me and I would appreciate a little bit of spoon feeding on that one. If you even scanned this far in what I wrote, I am surprised, but if so, I woul dappreciate any of your thoughts on how to accomplish this best.

  I am writing a add-on module which is integrated with an existing PHP application; Because I am using a MVC pattern, and which may requires lot of inclusion of classes (which might not be used at all depending on the action of the user), I decide to use autoloading of classes. However, I have to ensure that the autoload function does not interferes with the normal operations of the existing applications. Does autoload only kicks in if a class name is not defined? Say I have to write another module which uses its own autoload functions (say, I have an autoload for a module, since they each reside in their own folder), how do I differentiate which module is it for? For #2, I thought of 2 options. Either prefix the class name with the module name (Such as 'MyNewModule_View_Default' and 'AnotherModule_View_Default'), or use file_exists to check the include file exists. • Open Source Embedded Database Options for .Net Applications

  I have a .Net 4.0 WPF application that requires an embedded database. MS Access doesn't work on 64 bit Windows I'm told. And I having issues with SSCE: Unable to load DLL 'sqlceme35.dll': This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800736B1) sqlceme35.dll is installed into my application's program files directory, so I can't seem to figure out why Windows XP Pro doesn't see it. I was wondering about other embedded databases options I might use that work on both 32 and 64 bit windows. Any suggestions?

• How to outperform this regex replacement?

  After considerable measurement, I have identified a hotspot in one of our windows services that I'd like to optimize. We are processing strings that may have multiple consecutive spaces in it, and we'd like to reduce to only single spaces. We use a static compiled regex for this task: private static readonly Regex regex_select_all_multiple_whitespace_chars = new Regex(@"\s+",RegexOptions.Compiled); and then use it as follows: var cleanString= regex_select_all_multiple_whitespace_chars.Replace(dirtyString.Trim(), " "); This line is being invoked several million times, and is proving to be fairly intensive. I've tried to write something better, but I'm stumped. Given the fairly modest processing requirements of the regex, surely there's something faster. Could unsafe processing with pointers speed things further?

• Regex matching very slow

  I am trying to parse a PDF to extract the text from it (please don't suggest any libraries to do this, as this is part of learning the format). I have already handled deflating it to put it in the alphanumeric format. I now need to extract the text from the text blocks. So, my current pattern is "BT.*?((.*?)).*?ET" (with DOTMATCHALL set) to match something like: BT /F13 12 Tf 288 720 Td (ABC) Tj ET The only bit I want is the text ABC in the brackets. The above pattern works, but is really slow, I assume it is because the regex library is failing to match the pattern that matches the text between BT and the (ABC) many times. The regex is pre-compiled in an attempt to speed it up, but it seems negligible. How may I speed this up?

• How to strink matrix using array mask in Matlab?

  This seems to be a very common problem of mine. data = [1 2 3; 4 5 6]; mask = [true false true]; mask = repmat(mask, 2, 1); data(mask) ==> [1; 4; 3; 6] What I wanted was [1 3; 4 6] Yes I can just reshape it to the right size, but that seems the wrong way to do it. Is there a better way? Why doesn't data(mask) return a matrix when it is actually rectangular? I understand in the general case it may not be, but in my case since my original mask is an array it always will be.

  I am soon to start with Microsoft Robotics Studio. My question is to all the gurus of MSRS, Can simple simulation (as obstacle avoidance and wall following) be done without any hardware ? Does MSRS have 3-dimensional as well as 2-dimensional rendering? As of now I do not have any hardware and I am only interested in simulation, when I have the robot hardware I may try to interface it! Sorry for a silly question, I am a MSRS noob, but have previous robotics h/w and s/w experience.

• Are there any real benefits to including javascript dynamically rather than as script tags at the bo

  I've read that including the scripts dynamically may provide some better performance, however i'm not really seeing that on the small local tests I'm doing. I created a jquery plugin to dynamically load other plugins as necessary and am curious as to if this is actually a good idea.
