  • .NET Threading : How to wait for other thread to finish some task

    - by Alex Ilyin
Assume I have method void SomeMethod(Action callback) This method does some work in background thread and then invokes callback. The question is - how to block current thread until callback is called ? There is an example bool finished = false; SomeMethod(delegate{ finished = true; }); while(!finished) Thread.Sleep(); But I'm sure there should be better way

  • Image resizing efficiency in C# and .NET 3.5

    - by Matthew Nichols
I have written a web service to resize user uploaded images and all works correctly from a functional point of view, but it causes CPU usage to spike every time it is used. It is running on Windows Server 2008 64 bit. I have tried compiling to 32 and 64 bit and get about the same results. The heart of the service is this function: private Image CreateReducedImage(Image imgOrig, Size NewSize) { var newBM = new Bitmap(NewSize.Width, NewSize.Height); using (var newGrapics = Graphics.FromImage(newBM)) { newGrapics.CompositingQuality = CompositingQuality.HighSpeed; newGrapics.SmoothingMode = SmoothingMode.HighSpeed; newGrapics.InterpolationMode = InterpolationMode.HighQualityBicubic; newGrapics.DrawImage(imgOrig, new Rectangle(0, 0, NewSize.Width, NewSize.Height)); } return newBM; } I put a profiler on the service and it seemed to indicate the vast majority of the time is spent in the GDI+ library itself and there is not much to be gained in my code. Questions: Am I doing something glaringly inefficient in my code here? It seems to conform to the example I have seen. Are there gains to be had in using libraries other than GDI+? The benchmarks I have seen seem to indicate that GDI+ does well compare to other libraries but I didn't find enough of these to be confident. Are there gains to be had by using "unsafe code" blocks? Please let me know if I have not included enough of the code...I am happy to put as much up as requested but don't want to be obnoxious in the post.

  • Persistent Objects in ASP.NET

    - by user204588
Hello, I'm trying to find the best way to persist an object or in use the same object at a later point in the code. So, I create an object, then you're redirected to another page(a form) that needs to use variables from that object. That form is submitted to a third party and there is stuff done on their end and then they request a page on my application that runs some more code and needs the objects variables again. I thought about Database but this is all done at once. This is done during a user checkout process and after it's over, there's no reason to retrieve this object again. So adding and retrieving from a database seems like it would be overkill and I think it would make the process slower. Right now I'm using Session but I keep hearing not to use that but no one is really saying why I shouldn't except it is bad practice. I can't really use post back values because the pages don't work that way. The checkout process starts off in a dll code that redirects to the form that is submitted to the third party and the a page is requested by the third party. So, I'm not really sure of the best way. What are all the options and what does everyone recommend as the best way?

  • asp.net web form Cutom Router Handler

    - by jparram
I am using a custom route handler for a webforms application. I am using routes to determine localization. ie: if the url has es or fr in the route it will load either spanish or french resources. for example: www.someroute/es/checkstuff/checkstuff.aspx will load: www.someroute/checkstuff/checkstuff.aspx with the spanish resources. I am configuring the custom routes in global.asax via: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); } public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { foreach (var value in _customRoutes) { routes.Add(value.RouteName, new Route(value.Route, new CustomRouteHandler(value.ResolvedRoute))); } } where _customroutes is a list of routes. Is there a way to do this with some kind of pattern matching so I can avoid adding a specific route for each page in the application. While I know I could use a t4 template to generate the routes, I guess I am looking for a dynamic way to create the list

There's a .dll.intermediate.manifest file, but no .dll. So wut I did wrong?

  • asp.net: moving from session variables to cookies

    - by P a u l
My forms are losing session variables on shared hosting very quickly (webhost4life), and I think I want to replace them with cookies. Does the following look reasonable for tracking an ID from form to form: if(Request.Cookies["currentForm"] == null) return; projectID = new Guid(Request.Cookies["currentForm"]["selectedProjectID"]); Response.Cookies["currentForm"]["selectedProjectID"] = Request.Cookies["currentForm"]["selectedProjectID"]; Note that I am setting the Response cookie in all the forms after I read the Request cookie. Is this necessary? Do the Request cookies copy to the Response automatically? I'm setting no properties on the cookies and create them this way: Response.Cookies["currentForm"]["selectedProjectID"] = someGuid.ToString(); The intention is that these are temporary header cookies, not persisted on the client any longer than the browser session. I ask this since I don't often write websites.

  • ASP.NET MVC Colon in URL

    - by Joe Morgan
I've seen that IIS has a problem with letting colons into URLs. I also saw the suggestions others offered here. With the site I'm working on, I want to be able to pass titles of movies, books, etc., into my URL, colon included, like this: mysite.com/Movie/Bob:The Return This would be consumed by my MovieController, for example, as a string and used further down the line. I realize that a colon is not ideal. Does anyone have any other suggestions? As poor as it currently is, I'm doing a find-and-replace from all colons (:) to another character, then a backwards replace when I want to consume it on the Controller end.

  • How to select a single object using Linq in vb.net

    - by Hucker
I have done a lot of searching to what appears to be a simple LINQ problem but I can't figure out how to do grab an object out of a collection that has a specified minimum (or max value) without resorting to a sort like this: > dim customers= GetCustomers() > > dim youngest = (From c in customers > Order By c.age Ascending).ToList.First This (untested code) structure works fine with the exception that the entire customer array must be sorted and placed into a list for the only purpose of extracting the first value. That can't be the best way to get the minimum! Note that I want the whole c record in this case, not the minumum age of a customer that can be done like this (a typical example): > dim customers= GetCustomers() > > dim youngest = (From c in customers > Select c.age).Min Or even > dim customers= GetCustomers() > > dim youngest = (From c in customers > Select c).Min(Function(x) x.age) I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the whole object (or even the index) without resorting to the sort...

  • Question about architecting asp.net mvc application ?

    - by Misnomer
I have read little bit about architecture and also patterns in order to follow the best practices. So this is the architecture we have and I wanted to know what you think of it and any proposed changes or improvements to it - Presentation Layer - Contains all the views, controllers and any helper classes that the view requires also it containes the reference to Model Layer and Business Layer. Business Project - Contains all the business logic and validation and security helper classes that are being used by it. It contains a reference to DataAccess Layer and Model Layer. Data Access Layer - Contains the actual queries being made on the entity classes(CRUD) operations on the entity classes. It contains reference to Model Layer. Model Layer - Contains the entity framework model,DTOs,Enums.Does not really have a reference to any of the above layers. What are your thoughts on the above architecture ? The problem is that I am getting confused by reading about like say the repository pattern, domain driven design and other design patterns. The architecture we have although not that strict still is relatively alright I think and does not really muddle things but I maybe wrong. I would appreciate any help or suggestions here. Thanks !

  • ASP.net: Efficient ways to convert DataSets to GenericCollection (Of ObjectType)

    - by jlrolin
I currently have a function that gets some data from the database and puts it into a dataset. The return type on my function is GenericCollection (Of CustomerDetails) If I do this: Dim dataset As DataSet = Read(strSQL.ToString) 'Gets Data from DB What's the most efficient way to map the dataset results to an collection of objects. More importantly, since I'm using GenericCollection, is there a way to do this in which I can call a function from the ObjectType class (CustomerDetails) that would have a means to converting that specific object. Or is there a way in which I can use a function that would handle all types? Is there a way to do something like: Return returnedResults.TransformDataSet(dataset) In which returnedResults is an object collection Of CustomerDetails, or would it simply be easier to have TransformDataSet return an object collection Of CustomerDetails by itself? Thanks for any help.

  • Unusual conversion error (string to integer) asp.net

    - by Phil
I have my repeater item template: <ItemTemplate> <tr><td><%#Container.DataItem("Category")%></td></tr> </ItemTemplate> Hooked up to: s = "SQL that works ok on server" x = New SqlCommand(s, c) x.Parameters.Add("@contentid", SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@contentid").Value = contentid c.Open() r = x.ExecuteReader If r.HasRows Then Linksrepeater.DataSource = r Linksrepeater.DataBind() End If c.Close() r.Close() When I run the code I get: Invalid Cast Exception was not handled by user code (Conversion from string "category" to type 'Integer' is not valid.) I'm not sure how / why it is trying to convert "Category" to integer as in the db it is a string. Can you please tell me how to avoid this error? thanks.

  • ASP.NET MVC2 : DateTime modelbinding via HTTP GET

    - by mathieu
I'm getting some trouble binding a date from QueryString : I have the following model public class QueryParms { public DateTime Date { get; set; } } And the following controller action : public ActionResult Search( QueryParms query ); I have a form, with a field where I can type my date. If the form is FormMethod.Post, everything is fine, my date is correctly bound to my model. If the form is FormMethod.Get, it is not working anymore. The date is left to the default value (01/01/0001) I think it is a culture issue : When i look into the value provider, the FormValueProvider has a culture property set for my date : {fr-FR}. The QueryStringValueProvider doesn't have the culture property set. Is there a way to set this property ?

  • ASP.NET Radio Button State and Back Key

    - by Dave S
    When using the browser back key on a page with radio buttons and using auto-postback, the state of the buttons (checked) stays the same while other parts of the page do not. This results in a situation where button two is checked and the cached page (because of server-side logic) displays a message that button 1 is checked. What is the best way to handle this situation? The following code example exhibits this behavior: [Form:] <asp:RadioButton ID="rb1" runat="server" AutoPostBack="true" Text="Button1" OnCheckedChanged="rb_CheckedChanged" GroupName="rbgroup" Checked="true" /> <br /> <asp:RadioButton ID="rb2" runat="server" AutoPostBack="true" Text="Button2" OnCheckedChanged="rb_CheckedChanged" GroupName="rbgroup" /> <br /> <hr /> <asp:Label ID="lbl1" runat="server">Button 1</asp:Label> [Code Behind:] protected void rb_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (rb1.Checked == true) lbl1.Text = "Button 1"; else lbl1.Text = "Button 2"; }

  • Properly obsoleting old members in an XML Serializable class in C# VB .NET

    - by George
Hi! Some time ago I defined a class that was serialized using XML. That class contained a serializable propertyA of integer type. Now I have extended and updated this class, whereby a new propertyB was added, whose type is another class that also has several serializable properties. The new propertyB is now supposed to play the role of propertyA, that is since type of propertyB is another class, one of its members would contain the value that previously propertyA contained, thus making peroptyA obsolete. What I am trying to figure out is how do I make sure that when I desireliaze the OLD version of this class (without propertyB in it), I make sure that the desreializer would take the value of propertyA from the old calss and set it as a value of one of the members of propertyB in a new class? Private WithEvents _Position As Position = New Position(Alignment.MiddleMiddle, 0, True, 0, True) Public Property Position() As Position 'NEW composite property that holds the value of the obsolted property, i.e. Alignment Get Return _Position End Get Set(ByVal value As Position) _Position = value End Set End Property Private _Alignment As Alignment = Alignment.MiddleMiddle <Xml.Serialization.XmlIgnore(), Obsolete("Use Position property instead.")> _ Public Property Alignment() As Alignment'The old, obsoleted property that I guess must be left for compliance with deserializing the old version of this class Get Return _Alignment End Get Set(ByVal value As Alignment) _Alignment = value End Set End Property Can you help me, please?

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 Form Not Passing Values

    - by Wayne
Hi, I have a strange problem happening today. I am running the latest version of the MVC V2 framework and have been having no trouble at all - I came in this morning and for some reason values aren't being passed in to actions. To clarify lets say I have something like this: <% using (Html.BeginForm("Register", "Registration", FormMethod.Post)) { %> .... <input type="submit" name="register" id="register" value="Register" /> <% } %> And in my controller I have the following: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Register(RegistrationModel model, string register) { // At this point the register string is null } This has been working fine for a while now and I have not changed anything that I can think of that would cause this to happen. Does that make sense and as anyone any idea what is going on or what I have messed up? Thanks.

  • ASP.NET MVC CHECKBOXES PROBLEM

    - by mazhar
CONTROLLER public ActionResult Index() { GroupRepository grouprepository = new GroupRepository(); ViewData["Group"] = grouprepository.FindGroups(); return View(); } <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage" % <% foreach (Group i in ViewData["Group"] as List) { % " checked="checked" / <% } % The thing is that it is not able to find group id and displaying the following error. What is the solution? CS1061: 'System.Text.RegularExpressions.Group' does not contain a definition for 'int_GroupId' and no extension method 'int_GroupId' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Text.RegularExpressions.Group' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 A question about an Asynchronous Controller

The user has to wait 10 seconds to view the result of the action? If so, are the asynch controllers really helpful ?

  • VB.NET 2008 Application crashing during Do Loop

    - by RedHaze
I am writing an application to compare each item on listbox1 to all items on listbox2. If the item is found, then remove it from both lists. The goal is to only have the items that were not found remain on both lists. The problem is, the application just hangs and I never get any results. I looked at my code several times and I cannot figure out what's going on (programming noob I know...). Can anybody help me with this? Code Snippet: Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click Dim a As String Dim b As String Dim y As String For i As Integer = 0 To ListBox1.Items.Count - 1 a = ListBox1.Items(i) y = 1 Do While y = 1 For x As Integer = 0 To ListBox2.Items.Count - 1 b = ListBox2.Items(x) Dim res As Int16 = String.Compare(a, b) If res = 0 Then y = 0 ListBox2.Items.Remove(i) ListBox2.Items.Remove(x) ElseIf x = ListBox1.Items.Count Then Exit Do End If Next Loop Next End Sub
