• How can I build against Microsoft.Web.Administration (IIS 7.x) on a Windows 2003 build machine?

  Hi, I am writing a C# config app for (amongst other things) setting up websites. It's only required to support IIS 7.x (Windows 2008 / 2008 R2), and requiring the compatibility pack is a no-no, so I figured I'd just use the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace. However, the only place I can find the assembly that contains this namespace (Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll) is from the IIS 7.x installation folder, and our main build machines are Windows 2003 and so cannot install IIS 7.x. One option is to mandate a 2008 build machine but we currently only have one so that's not ideal. We've already ruled out appcmd.exe. The other option is to make a package consisting of the dlls necessary to build against Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll. Has anyone tried that? Is there such a package already in existence, hidden somewhere on the MS download site? Thanks in advance.

• Storing uploaded content on a website

  For the past 5 years, my typical solution for storing uploaded files (images, videos, documents, etc) was to throw everything into an "upload" folder and give it a unique name. I'm looking to refine my methods for storing uploaded content and I'm just wondering what other methods are used / preferred. I've considered storing each item in their own folder (folder name is the Id in the db) so I can preserve the uploaded file name. I've also considered uploading all media to a locked folder, then using a file handler, which you pass the Id of the file you want to download in the querystring, it would then read the file and send the bytes to the user. This is handy for checking access, and restricting bandwidth for users.

• How do i make an installer instead of a crash (.NET)

  My situation is Using .NET 3.5 Using SDL.NET Need to make a friendly installer or warning system. Chances are the user will be on XP (.NET 1.1). If possible can i do something to let the user know he needs to update to 3.5? Maybe have a yes/no dialog which downloads and install the .NET runtimes for him? Now how do i detect if the user has sdl.net installed (chances are its in program files/sdldotnet) and let them know they need sdl.net runtime and have a yes/no dialog that brings them to http://sourceforge.net/projects/cs-sdl/files/ The problem i have mostly is how to make the app not outright crash and how to download 3.5 .NET runtime if it is possible.

• .NET 3.5 SP1 prerequisite, MS giving the clients 4.0

  I have been using an MSI to install a WPF application using the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. I have set up .NET 3.5 as a prerequisite in the MSI, and what has been happening for ages is that when the user does not have .NET 3.5 SP1, the MSI first has them download and install that before resuming the installation of my application. Since yesterday when MS released .NET 4.0, when users don't have .net 3.5 SP1, the MSI is directing them to install 4.0 instead. What happens though, is that after they finish installing 4.0, the MSI still detects that they don't have 3.5, and directs them to the 4.0 install site again. So the user has 4.0, but the MSI doesn't ever get to installing my application. What do I have to change in my application? This seems like an error with how MS is handling the prerequisites either on their server or in the MSI in VS 2008.

  Linking to external file in Ruby on Rails I have a file I want to share as a link in my rails app. I create a link to it in the .erb file like this <li><a href="somefile.pdf">Some File</a> </li> When I select the link I get the following error. Routing Error No route matches "/pages/somefile.pdf" with {:method=:get} Do I really need a route for this? I really just want the save as dialog to popup. Just a link to a file that the user can open or download. What is the rails way to do this (rails newbie here)?

  i have an uploads folder on my website. What i want to do is restrict users from accessing like i dont want them to go to www.mysite.com/uploads/ and see the files in there and it should show forbidden, but they should be able to download via my website, for example www.mysite.com/downloads.php?id=1 If thats not possible, how can i atleast not show them the directory index on /uploads How is it that file sharing websites does this? An htaccess with deny from all stops php from accessing the file as well Please tell me a solution if you would know, i googled and asked on irc a few days ago about this issue, its pretty confusing to me.

I have created my document, and made a web page with a meta refresh tag, along the lines of this: <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="3;http://example.com/download.epl2" /> I specify that the document has a content-type of application/x-epl2, and I have associated .epl2 files on my computer with a program that silently sends them to the printer. I have put the website into my trusted sites zone. Currently Internet Explorer pops up the "Open, Save, Cancel" dialog box with no option to automatically open the file. Is there a setting in IE6/7/8 that I can use to have IE just open the file without prompting?

  I am trying to fix the performance problem with Dive Into Python 3 on IE8. Visit this page in IE8 and, after a few moments, you will see the following popup: I traced down the culprit down to this line in j/dip3.js ... find("tr:nth-child(" + (i+1) + ") td:nth-child(2)"); If I disable it (and return from the function immediately), the "Stop executing this script?" dialog does not appear as the page now loads fairly fast. I am no Javascript/jquery expert, so I ask you fellow developers as to why this query is making IE slow. Is there a fix for it?   Hi , Here's the problem I'm facing : trying to do my own application update I download the update apk from a web server on the sd card and then I launch the Package Installer with the downloading path ( while the old application is running) . So far after the package installer starts and the user agrees to install the application I get the following message " MyApp Could not be installed on this phone" and in the logcat then following message is printed : "No package identifier when getting value for resource number 0x00000000" . I could not find a reason for this behaviour , so please if there is something that I'm missing do point it to me !

• What signing method to use for public open-source projects?

  I'm publishing an open-source library on CodePlex, and want the dll files to have strong names so that they can be added to GAC. What's the best option for signing? Should I use SNK? If so, everyone have access to the key. I don't have a problem with everyone having access, but is it a good approach? Should I use PFX? If so, does it mean that other people downloading the source code are not able to build the solution? What I like to do is that I am the only one person to have access to the key, so that the signed assemblies also have a level of authenticity, but meanwhile don't prevent other developers to download, build, or change the source code for themselves, and be able to post changes for the main project.

RSS 2.0 file is supposed to be UTF8 encoded according to encoding attribute in XML file. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> So when I download URLs content I get text truncated after first occurance of char with diacritics, example: l š c t ž ý á í é, etc. I tried to solve the problem by downloading URL as UTF8 string, I used this code: NSString *rssXmlString = [NSString stringWithContentsOfURL: [NSURL URLWithString: @"http://www.macblog.sk/rss.xml"] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error: nil]; NSData *rssXmlData = [rssXmlString dataUsingEncoding: NSUTF8StringEncoding]; Did not help. I'm checking in an existing directory that isn't currently source-controlled (project about a week old). Other than that, my use case should be pretty run of the mill.   I published several free and paid app in the Market. I recently get several complains from customers about not finding my app in the 2.1 Market. Even if they have bought them before, they can't find it in the market or their download list after updating to 2.1. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? My apps only require minimal SDK 3.. • grails clean having issues

  Im running grails 1.2 on win7. when i try to do grails clean it fails to remove some jars in my acegi plugin. after that failure, it complains about not finding the plugin descriptor. I am forced to remove all plugins from the disk manually and then run the app again to download them again. the particular jar in acegi is ant-contrib-xx.jar. has anyone seen this? as a further note, if i just delete the acegi directory after the initial failure it fails on a jar in another plugin. I dont know if Im having some sort of windows filesystem issue (I am coming from linux, forced to use win7 because intellij sucks on linux), or intellij is doing something, or what...

  I am learning OpenGL by following the redbook. When I come to around page 90, I need use glGenBuffers(); Then I need install "glew". By following the steps in www.cs.uiowa.edu/~cwyman/classes/common/howto/winGLUT.html I download glew.zip from glew.sourceforge.net/ and unpack the files. I put glew.h in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Include and put glew32.lib in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Lib and put glew32.dll in C:\Windows\System32. After that, I build my project in VS 2010 and in Linker-input, I add dependencies glew32.lib. But when I build it, I have error unresolved external symbol _imp_glewInit I spend whole day to search solutions, but did not find one. Hope someone can help me with this.

• iPhone - finding items in current entity that share related item

  G'day Folks My core data driven app has an Events entity, essentially a list of times & venues, with a related Acts entity, the names & bios of the acts appearing at those events. I have a table view that shows the event time & venue (as a table section with 1 row), the act name & act bio that works nicely. If that act is appearing at more than one event I'd like to include another table section that lists those events. I think could get that with event.act.events except that it would include the event I'm currently displaying. Can anyone suggest how to get the data I want & exclude the current record?
