  • Is it a good idea for me to learn Python before C or some other Compiler language?

    - by Dream Lane
Right now I am going through MIT's introduction to Computer Science course via OpenCourseWare. As a part of this course I am learning the Python Language. I've read a lot of things about the benefits of learning C. Before I dig any deeper into Python I wonder if I will be hindered or helped by learning Python first. Do you think that I will develop any bad habits or anything like that from Python?

  • What's the Flash equivalent of FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE

    - by John
I'm moving some Flex classes to pure Flash/AS3 to be part of a shared library. I have an event listener on FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE to create and add display-objects once things are running, but I don't know the right way to do this in Flash? edit: Maybe if my class subclasses Sprite rather than a Flex class, I can add children in the constructor, I don't need to wait for a "construction complete" event?

  • How do I open a file in such a way that if the file doesn't exist it will be created and opened automatically?

    - by snakile
Here's how I open a file for writing+ : if( fopen_s( &f, fileName, "w+" ) !=0 ) { printf("Open file failed\n"); return; } fprintf_s(f, "content"); If the file doesn't exist the open operation fails. What's the right way to fopen if I want to create the file automatically if the file doesn't already exist? EDIT: If the file does exist, I would like fprintf to overwrite the file, not to append to it.

  • Question with "extern" in C

    - by why
When programming, I would like to split one large file(which contains main function) to many small files, so there is one common case: functions in small files can modify the var from main file, so i think extern is very useful! for instance: in main.c extern int i = 100; in small.c extern int i; fprintf(stdout, "var from main file: %d\n", i); I just want to know is my understanding right?

  • how to make sub-muens line up below their parents in horizontal navbars?

    - by Joel
Hi folks. I'm just putting together a simple nav bar using something similar to this tutorial: http://www.cssnewbie.com/horizontal-dropdown-menus/ The thing is, that I'd like to have the children lists first item to line up directly below the parent. Right now, they just go wherever I float them. Is there a way to do this without absolute positioning? I'd like to achieve something similar to what these guys have in their top nav bar: http://michaelfranti.com/

  • GDB disas question about address values

    - by user324994
I'm working with a binary file that I disas'd in gdb. Right now I'm just examining the return value of a function. 0x08048604 <playGame+78>: ret Is the address shown the address where ret is stored in the function? Or is it just the address of the instruction to return the ret value?

  • Makefile - How to save the .o one directory up?

    - by nunos
Imagine the following folder structure: project src code.c makefile bin How can I compile code.c to code.o and directly put it inside bin? I know I could compile it to code.o under src and the do "mv code.o ../bin" but that would yield an error if there were compile errors, right? Even if it works that way, is there a better way to do it? Thanks.

  • Is developing iPhone apps in any language other than Objective-C ever a truly viable solution?

    - by David Foster
I hear all this stuff about crazy ways to build iPhone apps using Ruby or C# under .NET or the like. Even stuff about developing apps on Windows using Java, or auto-generated apps using Flash CS5 or something. Now, I've never really spent any time at all investigating these claims—I just brushed them off as clumsy or cumbersome or down-right claptrap—but I'm a proud Objective-C programmer who's perhaps a little worried as to whether there's any truth in all of this?

  • VSS Deprecated Files

    - by timothyawiseman
We are using VSS for version control (changing to another version control system is not an option right now), and are occassionally running into issues where a file has been completely deprecated with its functionality split into other new files. For historical archival reasons we need to keep those files in the version control sytem. Is there some way to clearly mark them as deprecated and no longer used?

    - by flexfanatic
printableInvoice.addEventListener(batchGenerated, printableInvoice_batchGeneratedHandler); Results in this error: 1120: Access of undefined property batchGenerated. I have tried it as FlexEvent.batchGenerated and FlashEvent.batchGenerated. The MetaData and function that dispatches the even in the component printableInvoice is all right. It I instantiate printableInvoice as an mxml component instead of via action-script it well let put a tag into the mxml line: batchGenerated="someFunction()" Thanks.

  • TabBar Stop The Popping

    - by Jim Bonner
If have a Navigation Bar and a Tab Bar in one of my views. This is all working fine. One of the Tab Bar items requires pushing several other view controllers on the navigation stack before I get the where I need to be. This is also working. When I click on the tab bar item, it marches right back up the stack. How can I make the desired controller stick in the tab bar item?

  • How to build a widget for my website

    - by Gublooo
Hey guys I'm very new to the whole programming - so far I only have experience with building websites, database etc. I currently have a website where users can share their online purchases. Thats the idea but I have no idea how to go about it - can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks

  • Drop down view in cocoa

    - by coffeebean
I'm looking to create a 'drop down' view that falls in front of the main window. An example of this would be the window that drops down when you click 'Advanced' in System Preferences-Networking. If someone could point me in the right direction documentation-wise that would be great. Thanks in advance.

  • Is it possible to capture audio output and apply effects to it?

    - by Ciaran
Using .NET and DirectSound I want to be able to take all output sound that is coming from my audio device and apply effects to it. I've had a quick look at the docs on MSDN and there doesn't seem to be any explanation as to how to do something like this. I've read elsewhere that you'd be better off writing a driver to sit in front of your real audio driver and have that do whatever you want with the sound. Any ideas anyone to push me in the right direction?

  • QR code - where can I find (free) code to embed my own generator on a web page?

    - by Robbert Huisman
Hi, couldn't find it exactly from earlier questions, but I am probably repeating an earlier question, so apologies upfront ;-) I am looking for a simple code to embed a QR 2D code generator on a website I am building. I assume their should be some free open source code for that but I could only find paid software. Can anyone point me in the right direction? would be mostly appreciated! best regards, Robbert
