How does java.util.Collections.contains() perform faster than a linear search?

I've been fooling around with a bunch of different ways of searching collections, collections of collections, etc. Doing lots of stupid little tests to verify my understanding. Here is one which boggles me (source code further below). In short, I am generating N random integers and adding them to a list. The list is NOT sorted. I then use Collections.contains() to look for a value in the list. I intentionally look for a value that I know won't be there, because I want to ensure that the entire list space is probed. I time this search. I then do another linear search manually, iterating through each element of the list and checking if it matches my target. I also time this search. On average, the second search takes 33% longer than the first one. By my logic, the first search must also be linear, because the list is unsorted. The only possibility I could think of (which I immediately discard) is that Java is making a sorted copy of my list just for the search, but (1) I did not authorize that usage of memory space and (2) I would think that would result in MUCH more significant time savings with such a large N. So if both searches are linear, they should both take the same amount of time. Somehow the Collections class has optimized this search, but I can't figure out how. Issues with an image link

Two days ago I spontaneously bought myself a domain. The day before that, I hardly even knew what a domain really was. Since then, I've been trying to teach myself HTML for the very first time. Basically what I'm trying to say is, I'm very new - and will probably be poor in my explanations. I just succeeded in making an 'image-button', sorta. It's where I make a button-like image and then use it as navigation on my website (just like a regular link). My issue is that the link 'border' itself is bigger than the image, so you can press an inch outside the image itself and it will work. NSTimer won't stop it only resets when invalidated & released

When I press my stop button to stop the timer it just resets to the original time and begins counting down again. I have looked everywhere and all I have found is "invalidate" and it isn't working. I want the time to stop when I hit stop and the label to display the original time. Mysql configuration problem

I have being trying since last night. At first it was working but this morning again its not working. I am installing mysql version 5.0 on vista machine. when i try to configure its says that: The security settings could not be applied to the database because the connnection had failed with the following error: Error Nr. 1045 access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'(using password:yes) if a personal firewall is runnig on your machine plaes make sure you have opened the tcp port 3306 for connections. otherwise no client applicaion can connect to the server. after you have opened the port please press retry to apply the secirity settings. if you are re-installing after you just installed the mysql server please not that the data directory was not removed automatically. therefore the old password from your last installation is still needed to connect to the server. in this case please select skip now and re-run the configuration wizard from the start menu. i tried disabling the wirefall, user accounts but getting the same error. can anyone suggest me something please.

Exchange 2010 setup /prepareAD fails to run

I've tried installing Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 (only domain controller and all-in-one system). I did setup.exe /prepareAD, setup /prepareSchema and it worked fine the first time I did it. Unfortunately due to problem with Hub Transport installation related to (at least from what I've read) IPv6 being disabled (some say disabling it helped them while some enabling helped them). I did it the proper way by using registry entry to disable IPv6 but it still errored out. So i managed to uninstall everything (renamed some old entries in registry of failed Hub Transport roles and tried to reinstal Exchange after rebooting server. Migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL on Linux (Kubuntu)

Storyline Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here. How to set up a mini call center?

I'm trying to figure out how to set up a miniature call center for a small business. Like, for 1-4 people to take calls, but hopefully expandable to more. We want to accept nation-wide calls, and then I guess distribute the calls among the available agents. If no one is available, I guess it should either put them in a queue and play some annoying music for them, or forward to call to an agent who has least-recently taken a call who can then quickly answer and say "please hold" until they're done their call. We want to have one phone number that customers can call. I guess we then need some kind of ACD system which would take each call and forward it to an agent based on some algorithm? Then we would need to purchase a separate phone line for each agent, plus one just for the distributor? Or do we need several "extra" lines to maintain a queue (one for each customer waiting too)? This "ACD" thing, is it just a device that you would plug a phone line into (or several?), and maybe connect to a computer, aided by some software? Or is a subscription thing that I would need from my local telephone provider? Next, the business we're running, the callers will be repeat customers. It would be helpful to automatically pull up their profile based on the incoming number. The "software" our agents will be running will just be a website where they can log in (preferably from home) and then enter some information they would obtain through the call. So, the system would have to somehow interface with the website if possible. If not, we'll just have to ask each customer for an identifier (phone number, username, customer number, or something). Is this possible? I guess each computer would need a device that the call would pass through, and then if I can somehow hook into that, then I can write some software that will interface with the site. So, where do I start? What hardware do we need to buy? What subscriptions do we need? We were thinking this magicJack might help us in accepting long-distance calls for cheaper, but my understanding is that they provide you with some weird-looking number, is there a way we could "mask" it with our toll-free number? And then pass the incoming calls through the distributor system, which would then get passed to the call-accepting device which would both allow an agent to answer the call and have a software hook? (I realize this might be partially out of the scope of SU, but I wasn't sure where else to ask. It is about computer(-aided) hardware and software anyway.) P.S.: I don't need any of that "press 1 to talk to..." or "say xyz to..." junk. Just a straight-forward, connect-to-next-available-agent system.

How to reinstall OEM Windows 98 SE?

I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Hårddisken är inte klar för återställning av programvara. Installationsprogrammet måste skapa nya partitioner (C:, D:, ...). VARNING! ALLT INNEHÅLL PÅ HÅRDDISKEN KOMMER ATT RADERAS! Tryck på en tangent om du vill fortsätta (eller CTRL-C för att avbryta). Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing. Solution #2 Rik proposed to run Z:\setup. Now that I have found a way to drop to DOS prompt with Ctrl+C as described above (Update 2), I did try running setup but there is no such command or file in there. So that didn't work.

Windows 7 + Deep Freeze - I'm stuck in an endless reboot loop

I have the following setup: Windows 7 Ultimate Deep Freeze I "thawed" my machine last night and performed a Windows Update. The update is having issues (it gets stuck at 32%, fails, and restarts my machine). When it reboots it attempts it again, and again, and again, etc. (Endless loop). I looked online and found some solutions, but none of them seem to be working: When I run Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Network, or Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt it attempts to revert the Windows Update changes. However, the problem is with Deep Freeze on (and now in "Frozen" mode) the reverted changes don't stay, and I'm back into the loop of death. Oh, and side note: "Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt" does not actually take me to a command prompt window? Perhaps because it is attempting to complete the Windows Update changes first? I have tried to select the option to NOT restart when an windows error occurs, but it still does. I tried the remainder of all the other options in the F8 screen. The only other option left is to find my Windows 7 Media Disc (I can't find it right now) and use it to repair windows (because for some reason the repair option does not show up in the F8 screen). Is there a way to disable Deep Freeze from loading? When I selected "Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt" I noticed that it loads the DpFrz.sys file. I know that when I'm in the Windows Boot Manager if I press F10 instead of F8 (while highlighting Windows 7) it takes me to an "Edit Boot Options" screen: Edit Windows boot options for: Windows 7 Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe Partition: 2 Hard Disk: 8e90e329 [ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN (I CAN EDIT THIS LINE) ] Update: I found my Windows 7 Media Disk and it did not help out. The laptop had the "System Restore" as a partition on the HDD. I later received (in the mail) a Windows 7 Upgrade Disc from Sony to upgrade my system from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate. I placed the disc into the DVD drive and it does not come up as a "bootable" disc. I'm going to try to find an alternative disc to see if I can get into Command Prompt. Update 2: I got a Windows Repair disc and got into a command prompt window. I got into the registry and disabled Deep Freeze. Also: I renamed the Pending.xml file to Pending.old I cleared out the Windows Temp directory I still am stuck in the loop (though, it isn't an issue with DeepFreeze anymore because I can make changes to the hard drive and they persist). Not sure what to do at this point? Update 3: I ran the repair option and it couldn't repair, but it did point me to something. It says the error was due to a driver that was failing. I have a feeling it is my UPEK Fingerprint scanner.

ffmpeg hangs when creating a video

I am trying to insert an audio channel with a video: first of all I extract the audio from the original video for processing: ffmpeg -i lotr.mp4 lotr.wav I then extract all frames for later processing too: ffmpeg -i lotr.mp4 -f image2 %d.jpg When done processing audio and video streams, I try to create the video ffmpeg -f image2 -r 15 -i %d.jpg new.mp4 then merge with the audio: ffmpeg -i new.mp4 -i lotr.wav -map 0:0 -map 1:0 new_w_audio.mp4 Result: CPU activity = 100%, the process hangs and never returns. HT Link Sync Error after Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Installation

Update 1 I just assembled an exact replica of this server, and successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in a RAID10 configuration. The success was confirmed by a login to the initial account. There must be a hardware component that is faulty. Since the error mentions HT, which I believe to be Hyper Threading, I will start with the CPUs. Please indicate if this error is more strongly associated with any other piece of hardware. Or make a recommendation of another approach that would be good for this issue. Issue I was attempting to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on this system with the board RAID10 configured. However, the installation failed at the partitioning stage by rebooting the system. Upon reboot, there is an error report after POST listing the following: Node0: NB WatchDog Timer Error Node1: HT Link Sync Error Node2: HT Link Sync Error ... Node7: HT Link Sync Error Press F1 to continue/resume. After pressing F1 the system will boot from the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation disc. However, it will fail at the same stage, and go through the same process from there. Hardware CPU: AMD OPTERON X12 6172 G34 2.1G 18MB Motherboard: Supermicro H8QG6-F HDD: WD Caviar Green 2TB 5.4K RPM Troubleshooting I disabled RAID10 on the system, and installed the Ubuntu on a single drive. It installed successfully. I then went back to a RAID10 setup and attempted to install on the system again, and was able to make it through the partitioning stage. However, upon reboot, the system reported: Error: file not found, and then booted me into the Grub Rescue console. I feel I have aggravated the problem at this point because when I attempted to install from the boot disc again, the system reboots upon hitting enter to even start the installation process. It does the same thing when trying to boot from an Ubuntu 11 disc. I have not been able to find any information on this HT Link Sync Error, which I feel may have started the problems I am experiencing now with the installation of the OS. I am also aware that Ubuntu is said not to be supported by the motherboard according to Supermicro's site. However, since I was able to install it successfully on a single drive, I do not believe it is incompatible. I would like to know a reason for why it's failing to install on/off.

HID USB Very Strange Problem...

I realy hope some one can help me here cause i search all over the web and nothing comes up.. I allways used PS/2 KB and Mouse and a USB KeyPad (Genius ErgoMedia 500 Gaming Explorer) to play some games, mmorpg, fps, you named, very good whit 11 keys whit possible macros etc etc... Now it comes the problem, i have a USB mouse that have 4 extra buttons, and i need more button, i love buttons.. Well, i plug in the USB mouse and disconectes de PS/2. Everything is ok until i toutch the mouse. If i do so, the ErgoMedia goes off, then on, then i mouse the mouse or press a button and all over again. Yesterday i went buying a new mouse that i liked, a USB mouse too (NPlay whit macros and all that stuff 3600dpi...) Hoping the problem was only whit the other mouse, but no.. It does the exact same thing, ErgoMedia keeps disconecting and conecting everytime i toutch the mouse. What i allready did: Update drivers of both mouses Update drivers of ErgoMedia (no specific drivers(Windows based)) Update drivers of MB Chipset (Actualy no, cause it was up to date allready) Trying other USB Ports (4 Ports back, 4 Ports Front and even 1 Port in 16 card slot device) Disable the "Allows Windows to shut down the energy bla bla" thing in Device Setings. Look up in the Device Setings only apear a problem on the ergomedia (Human interface Device) when i move the damm mouse.. Using Everest to read behavier, everything normal, exepts the disconecting thing, but no errors. Not a power suply, only the ErgoMedia and the mouse are in the USBs, and i allready disable the 16 card reader whit one usb slot to see.. Clean the IRQ registry. Look the entire internet for a fix solution. Help others problems wile looking for a fix for me (Im not a pro but not a completly stupid) Talking to you beggin you to help me as a last resorce... Machine: Acer M3641 Core2Quad 64x Based OS Vista 64b 4GbRAM HD Audio and Graphics I realy hope some one out there knows a fix for this, maybe it´s a simple thing, so simple that i´m to stupid to see that.. I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? (I know that other SMB shares seem to work fine in my network) Diagnostics The only thing I can get out of Console.app is: 5/15/11 7:36:40 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[200] SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64 This message occurs when I click the name of the SMB server in the Finder sidebar. Encoding multiple video streams with a single avconv invocation

I played with avconv on Ubuntu and I'm now able to e.g. record the desktop with sound from a soundcard. One thing I wanted to do was recording two video inputs at the same time, for instance the desktop and from the webcam. I thought about doing something like this: avconv \ -f alsa \ -i default \ -acodec flac \ -f video4linux2 \ -r 6 \ -i /dev/video0 \ -f x11grab \ -i :0.0 \ out.mkv My thinking was that if you define multiple video inputs, and the .mkv format can handle multiple video streams, avconv will encode 2 video streams and 1 audio stream into one file. When I'm trying to record a clip from my webcam, using: ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -s 640x480 -i /dev/video0 /tmp/spam.avi I get annoying problem with very low resolution video, and there is a message from ffmpeg saying: [video4linux2,v4l2 @ 0x2bff3e0] The V4L2 driver changed the video from 800x600 to 176x144 I have tried not specifying -s, or trying other sizes like 800x600, and always it forces me back to 176x144. Why is this and how can I prevent it? VBA + Polymorphism: Override worksheet functions from 3rd party

my company makes extensive use of a data provider using a (closed source) VBA plugin. In principal, every query follows follows a certain structure: Fill one cell with a formula, where arguments to the formula specify the query the range of that formula is extended (not an arrray formula!) and cells below/right are filled with data For this to work, however, a user has to have a terminal program installed on the machine, as well as a com-plugin referenced in VBA/Excel. My Problem These Excelsheets are used and extended by multiple users, and not all of them have access to the data provider. While they can open the sheet, it will recalculate and the data will be gone. However, frequent recalculation is required. I would like every user to be able to use the sheets, without executing a very specific set of formulas. Attempts remove the reference on those computers where I do not have terminal access. This generates a NAME error i the cell containing the query (acceptable), but this query overrides parts of the data (not acceptable) If you allow the program to refresh, all data will be gone after a failed query Replace all formulas with the plain-text result in the respective cells (press a button and loop over every cell...). Obviously destroys any refresh-capabilities the querys offer for all subsequent users, so pretty bad, too. A theoretical idea, and I'm not sure how to implement it: Replace the functions offered by the plugin with something that will be called either first (and relay the query through to the original function, if thats available) or instead of the original function (by only deploying the solution on non-terminal machines), which just returns the original value. More specifically, if my query function is used like this: =GETALLDATA(Startdate, Enddate, Stockticker, etc) I would like to transparently swap the function behind the call. Do you see any hope, or am I lost? I appreciate your help. PS: Of course I'm talking about Bloomberg... Some additional points to clarify issues raise by Frank: The formula in the sheets may not be changed. This is mission-critical software, and its way too complex for any sane person to try and touch it. Only excel and VBA may be used (which is the reason for the previous point...) It would be sufficient to prevent execution of these few specific formulas/functions on a specific machine for all excel sheets to come This looks more and more like a problem for stackoverflow ;-)

How do I troubleshoot an IPsec tunnel (from a cellular router to a public server)?

I'm new to IPsec and struggling with a setup that might soon be widely used in our operations (provided I do understand it, eventually...). A cellular router (blackbox by netModule, from its log messages it seems to be running Linux and OpenSwan) connects a sensor network on customers' sites with our public server. We need to be able to connect into the local network, so I had the cell provider give me a public IP (a dynamic one). The way their setup works, the public IPs only allow IPsec traffic. I set up OpenSwan on our Ubuntu server (running Jaunty). This is my connection config from /etc/ipsec.conf: conn gprs-field-devices left=my.pub.lic.ip [email protected] #leftsubnet=192.168.1.129/25 right=%any [email protected] #rightsubnet=192.168.1.1/25 #rightnexthop=%defaultroute auto=add On the router, all I have is the Web UI, in which I made the following settings: "Remote endpoint": public IP of server, same as "left" above "Local Network Address": 192.168.1.1 "Local Network Mask": 255.255.255.128 "Remote Network Address": 192.168.1.129 "Remote Network Mask": 255.255.255.128 The pluto process on the server is listening for connections on port 500. It can't open a tunnel, obviously, because it doesn't know at which IP the client is. I set up a passphrase as PSK for @field.econemon.com in /etc/ipsec.secrets and also configured it in the router (which doesn't seem to support certificates). My problem is, nothing happens. The router just says, IPsec is "down". When I copy-paste the IP into ipsec.conf (for "right="), and ask the server to ipsec auto --up gprs-field-devices, it just hangs until I press Ctrl-C. Is there anything wrong with my setup? How can I debug this further?
