• How to free port 80 for xampp to work

  Please help, I used to be running xampp and it was working perfectly. Then I wanted to try something out and I ran IIS instead of xampp. Now I want to go back to using xampp, but whenever I try to run the apache server it says: Busy... Apache started [port 80] If I go to http://localhost/ then it just says that it can't establish a connection to the server. I have turned off IIS, so I don't see why it shouldn't work. Any suggestions?

• Windows Scheduled Tasks losing password configuration

  I have a couple of jobs scheduled to run daily on a customer server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, SP1 using Windows Scheduled Tasks. The tasks are set to run as a user that is in the Administrators group, and were scheduled as that same user. The password of that user is set to never expire. These tasks fail to run pretty much every day. Going into Scheduled Tasks and attempting to run the tasks manually indicates that the password is incorrect. I go into the task properties, retype the password into the appropriate fields, click OK, and attempt to run the task manually again. Now it works fine. What might be the cause of the password being lost like this? These same tasks are running on other customers servers with no problems. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

  I have a rails app on an old Ubuntu server I need to move onto a new machine. I haven't worked with ruby on rails so I don't really know anything about the structure of the app. I want to load this onto an Ubuntu 8.04 AMI on Amazon EC2 and am looking for any information regarding the migration process such as: Do I copy over the entire folder defined as the application root in the mongrel config (for ex: /u/apps/myapp/current) or just certain folders? Am I looking for trouble if I go with the latest versions of ruby and the various gems? Any general gotchas to look out for in the process. • Unable to do forwarding in BIND DNS?

  I have BIND working on Windows Server 2003. i want to forward my queries to another server. Recursion is working but forwarding is not working. can u guide me to set it. i've given the following in the options: options { directory "c:\named\zones"; allow-transfer { none; }; forward only; forwarders { 8.8.8.8 ; }; recursion no; }; is the format for forwarding correct in the above. if not what is the format. Am i to give any port number in the forwarders line? Does forwarding have any particular port number? Thank You in advance....

• Remote Desktop settings not being applied for user

  We have a number of Win 2003 servers for which we have Remote Desktop enabled. Each user has their profile edited so that they can only connect for 2 hours maximum and have 30 minutes idle time, after which they are disconnected and the session closed. On one server however, the administrator account does not have the maximum session limit working. We can stay connected for days if we want. Originally this was how it was setup, and we later changed the profile for all users so that there are limits. We have rebooted the server a couple of times since, and the Management Console shows the limits. If we are idle for too long we are disconnected. Other users are having all the limits observed. Any suggestions?

• Encryption of OS X to Windows SMB traffic and password

  I connected to a Windows Server 2008 R2 shared folder from a Mac OS X Mountain Lion computer over the Internet using this command: mount -t smbfs //user@server/path/to/share local_folder Is traffic encrypted by default? What settings do I look at (if any) to know whether it was encrypted? If it wasn't encrypted, what's the easiest way to encrypt it? Was the password I typed at the command line encrypted? Update: sysadmin1138 has addressed the password question. Does anyone know how I can tell if the traffic itself is being encrypted?

• VPN Connects with local access only

  I have Windows Server 2008 and I have set up a VPN. When a user logs into their VPN they can not view the internet. It comes up as local access only on the the client PC. On the server when I go to the Network And Sharing Centre it displays (Network) with local and internet below it has the RAS Dial-in interface and it displays as local only there as well. I want all users that connect to my VPN to have internet access (full access). If anyone can help me it would be appreciated. Also I've activated dial-in properties and I've done it via policy who can access the VPN and internet. It still doesn't work, but there is a connection but just local only. Thanks

  I have a project with a 2TB database ( 450.000.000 rows). I need to provide to the proyect a solution that gives FailOver and load Balacing, what do you recommend? We are going to use a NetApp Filer for the Data Files and for the File System of the Proyect. I read that SQl Clustering does not provide load balacing. If I cannnot have this feature and I have to go only to the FailOver what Server ( I presume that the key feature here is memory) would you recomend. We are adding 1.000.000 rows a day. Once the rows is inserted we are doing a lot of updates to that row for about 1 week then the row get static. Because of this I am thinking in some kind of history table or database or something like that. I am open to the Os servers implementation, I was thinking of a windows 2008 server with cluster but this depend of the database solution

  Hello Apologies if this is already answered, its a tricky one to search for! We are using split DNS for a domain used internally. For the outside nameservers, theres a simple zone with: @ IN A ip.ad.dr.ess www IN A ip.ad.re.ss This works fine externally. Internally its a windows server 2003 DNS server, so the www a record works fine, but I cant figure out how to add that primary record (using at symbol @ in bind). Can anyone help with how to get the same results from windows dns? I just want to be able to add a record for domain.com without being forced to use something.domain.com Thanks, Edit: This domain is not the "main" AD domain, and not used for logins etc.

• Re-using port 443 for another service - is it possible?

  The ultimate goal is to allow a remote data connection service to operate on port 443 on a the SQL server. The application accessing the connection is behind a firewall and it is because of the client's reluctance to open another port that I have been asked to try and get this working. The current environment is Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) and SQL Server 2005. IIS is not installed, but when I try and install the third party connection software (SequeLink) it won't as it reports something is still configured on/using port 443. Netstat does not show anything listening on the port and I've tried editing the system32\drivers\etc\services file removing any reference to port 443 and also using sc delete to delete the HTTP and HTTPFilter (HTTP SSL in services console) services to see if this would help. Rebooting after each change. What could still be using the port? Is what I'm trying even possible (I have my doubts but have to investigate every avenue)? Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm installing sql instances through script, and after creating a certain instance, I cannot get the sa account to be enabled through osql. What I've tried osql -S .\INSTANCENAME -E use master ALTER LOGIN sa ENABLE GO Using SSMS to enable the account (by logging in using Windows Auth., 'New query', and exactly the same query as in 1.) Suggestions in this issue No. 2. is actually working; and the account is enabled instantly. No 1 is not working, not even with the suggestions provided in 3., I have restarted the SQL services after executing the commands in osql. Additional info Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, No password policies apply to the account.

It's all running on the one server, just for a single application, which works fine locally and when using Remote Desktop Web Access on the local network. However, when accessing it over the Internet, you can log on to RD Web Access fine, but when running the RemoteApp you get the message: RemoteApp Disconnected The remote computer could not be found. Please contact your helpdesk about this error. The application and all Remote Desktop services are on a single machine. I have purchased and installed a GoDaddy Cert. It works like a charm in the local network, but I get the above message when trying to access through rdweb How can I enable the RemoteApp to function outside the local network? I think there is one or 2 steps I left out??.. Please help...

  I have a 2008 reporting services server installed on windows 2003 server. I am trying to allow anonymous access to the report builder folder so that my users do not have to select the remember password option when they login, if they are wanting to use the report builder. All I have found so far is that I should be able to do this with the IIS manager, but that only seems to work for reporting services 2005. Reporting services 2008 does not show up in the IIS manager, enabling anonymous access seems to be hidden somewhere else. How do I enable anonymous access to report builder in reporting services 2008?

• Is this a bug in Profiler or Entity Framework?

  Using Entity Framework 4 with stored procedures and SQL Server 2008 SP1... When running SQL Server Profiler (TSQL_SPs template), the lines that show my stored procedure call and its statements say that they executed in DatabaseID = 1 (Master) but it is actually happening in my application database (ID = 8). The procedures execute properly and return the data, and they only exist in my application database, so why does Profiler mark those lines as being in Master? Is this a bug in Profiler? Is it a bug in EF4? Note that running the same code against a SQL 2000 instance, Profiler correctly shows the application's database ID.

  Is it possible to assign a security group in windows 2008 a specific DHCP scope? Meaning, let's say we have 2 groups, employees and managers in the superscope Company. Assuming that each user is distinctly in either group and there are no overlaps, would it be possible to assign members of the security group employees a dhcp address in the range 192.168.1.0/24 and managers 192.168.2.0/24 ? • Attempting to ping RPC endpoint 6001/6004 (Exchange Information Store) on server on Exchange2010

  I have Exchange 2010 in hosting setup like: TMG 2010 as load balancer Exchange 2010 x 2 (CAS,MAILBOX,HUB on each server) AD1, AD2 machines File witness All people currently connect thru OWA or POP3/SMTP and that works fine. The problem is autodiscovery doesn't work and RPC in terms of setting up Outlook doesn't work too. It doesn't work if I am connected with VPN or not. The thing is it used to work. Before reinstall of my machine 2 days ago I was able to get mails successfully thru Outlook that was set up using autodiscovery (but I was getting reports setting up of new clients wasn't working - so not sure why my outlook continued to work). I used https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com to track it down and basically the message is more or less this: Attempting to ping RPC endpoint 6004 (NSPI Proxy Interface) on server autodiscover.domain.pl. The attempt to ping the endpoint failed. Additional Details The RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba) was thrown by the RPC Runtime process. • Disable Bing search entirely from IE when using sysprep

  I'm creating a Windows Server 2012 R2 image for our product (an all-in-one appliance installed on server hardware) and I am having incredible trouble with getting Bing removed from Internet Explorer. Our clients do not want Bing at all, not as a default search, not as a "search from address bar" feature, not in any sense. I've managed to configure everything else that I want in IE using WAIK to generate an unattend XML file but this has me completely stuck. Ideally I want Bing removed from IE altogether but I would make do with it just being completely disabled. I can find no options in either WAIK or Group Policy to configure this as I need it. Any ideas gratefully received.

But I would like to know about any odd physical tools or techniques that you've used; Something that you never expected to be useful, but ended up saving the day. I'll go first: A Camera Phone. An application server had a major power issue that borked the RAID. Many of the disks were offline. Before I took the plunge and forced disks back online, I took a picture of the RAID BIOS screen with my camera phone. Having the exact layout of the RAID stored safely in my pocket, I was able to reset the RAID, and reboot the server. What odd tools/techniques have you used?

• Windows 2003 shutdown instead of reboot

  Hi all, I've got a very strange problem. On the net I can only find problems with Server 2003 pc's, that reboot instead of shutting down, but in my case... (go figure) it does the opposite. When I choose to reboot, the system shutdown. Yes I am sure I used the reboot button. It happens via start == reboot and it happens when clicking on the reboot button when the update's have been installed. Nothing changed to the system's hardware. Only update's have been installed on the system. I did notice something odd in the logs when rebooting: Description: Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE" KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924390 They talk about a removable drive, but in my case, it's explorer.exe :s it appears 4 times. I tried a lot, really... but i stuck on this problem... i actually i even reinstalled all dependent programs and reconfigured them from default. Group exists and has me in it. Firefox running on the old proxy and i use IE for testing the new one. But i'll get all the time Access-Denited and to be honest i'm quite a beginner, so please don't be to prude. I'll interested in improving, i'll get the information we need to fix this but i started working 2 month ago and got only 1 1/2 year's training and not a single sec. in linux ;)
