  • Excel sum from column based on another column

    I have two columns. The values in the first one are either blank or have a 1. The values in the second one is a number. I also have a variable field. At the bottom of each column, I'd like to have a "total" field, which checks if there is a value (of 1) in the first column, and if there is, adds this up from the value of the second column (on the same row) and multiplies it by the variable. for example: variable 10 name1 name2 counter 1 2 1 3 1 1 3 1 4 totals 100 50 since name1 has 3 1's in it's column, it takes each value from the counter column, and multiplies it by the variable, and outputs the total I'm sorry if this has been asked, I've tried searching but I have a hard time understanding the excel syntaxes.     Hi this is a repeat of the question: Excel: Find Items in one column that are not in another column I have two columns in excel, and I want to find (preferably highlight) the items that are in column B, but not in column A. What's the quickest way to do this? However, the answer given below to in the above-menitoned thread no longer applies to Mac Excel 2011. E.g. there is no "name-a-range" option available on right click etc.. Therefore I am asking this again. Select the list in column A Right-Click and select Name a Range... Enter "ColumnToSearch" Click cell C1 Enter this formula: =MATCH(B1,ColumnToSearch,0) Drag the formula down for all items in B If the formula fails to find a match, it will be marked #N/A, otherwise it will be a number. If you'd like it to be TRUE for match and FALSE for no match, use this formula instead: =IF(ISNA(MATCH(B1,ColumnToSearch,0)),FALSE,TRUE) How should this answer be restated to apply to Mac Excel 2011?

    Sure, object-oriented techniques are great and have stuck around for a while. I know only less than a handful of critics of the OO principles. It seems as though most non-OO designs and architectures are shunned, yet we continue to write a lot of good software in C and solve a lot of data changes via awk/sed and countless other examples. Correct tool for the correct job, yes? I'm having a hard time finding articles, presentations, or published criticisms of OO (even Fred Brooks has blessed information hiding). Are there any well-known, published and/or outspoken critics of OO?

    Would you try to persuade your client that using object-oriented programming is much cleaner? Or would you try to follow what he required and give him crappy code? Now I am writing a program to simulate the activity of ants in a grid. The ant can move around, pick up things and drop things. The problem is while the action of the ants and the positions of each ant can be tracked by class attributes easily (and we can easily create many instances of such ants) my client said that since he has a background in functional programming he would like the simulation to be made using functional programming. Also why C++ is mostly taught at schools whereas Java is a pure Object Oriented language(also language for making android apps)? Why not Objective C is being taught for making apps on the iPhone?     Hi Everyone.... I am a programmer trying to learn to code in the object oriented paradigm... I mainly work with PHP and i thought of learning the zend framework... So, felt I need to learn to code in OO PHP.... The problem is, having done code using functions for quite a long time, i just can't get my head to think in the OO way.... Also felt that probably I am not the only one facing this problem since the beginning of time... So, how did you people learn object oriented programming... especially how did you succeed in "unlearning" to code using functions... and learn to see you code as objects...?   • Object Oriented Programming in AS3

    I'm building a game in as3 that has balls moving and bouncing off the walls. When the user clicks an explosion appears and any ball that hits that explosion explodes too. Any ball that then hits that explosion explodes and so on. My question is what would be the best class structure for the balls. I have a level system to control levels and such and I've already come up with working ways to code the balls. Here's what I've done. My first attempt was to create a class for Movement, Bounce, Explosion and finally Orb. These all extended each other in the order I just named them. I got it working but having Bounce extend Movement and Explosion extend Bounce, it just doesn't seem very object oriented because what if I wanted to add a box class that didn't move, but did explode? I would need a separate class for that explosion. My second attempt was to create Movement, Bounce and Explosion without extending anything. Instead I passed in a reference to the Orb class to each. Then the class stores that reference and does what it needs to do based on events that are dispatched by the Orb such as update, which was broadcast from Orb every enter frame. This would drive the movement and bounce and also the explosion when the time came. This attempt worked as well but it just doesn't seem right. I've also thought about using Interfaces but because they are more of an outline for classes, I feel like code reuse goes out the window as each class would need its own code for a specific task even if that task is exactly the same. I feel as if I'm searching for some form of multiple inheritance for classes that as3 does not support. Can someone explain to me a better way of doing what I'm attempting to do? Am I being to "Object Oriented" by having classed for Movement, Bounce, Explosion and Orb? Are Interfaces the way to go? Any feedback is appreciated!

  • Converting to a column oriented array in Java

    Although I have Java in the title, this could be for any OO language. I'd like to know a few new ideas to improve the performance of something I'm trying to do. I have a method that is constantly receiving an Object[] array. I need to split the Objects in this array through multiple arrays (List or something), so that I have an independent list for each column of all arrays the method receives. Example: List<List<Object>> column-oriented = new ArrayList<ArrayList<Object>>(); public void newObject(Object[] obj) { for(int i = 0; i < obj.length; i++) { column-oriented.get(i).add(obj[i]); } } Note: For simplicity I've omitted the initialization of objects and stuff. The code I've shown above is slow of course. I've already tried a few other things, but would like to hear some new ideas. How would you do this knowing it's very performance sensitive?

    I'm working with MS SQL SERVER 2003. I want to change a column in one of my tables to have fewer characters in the entries. This is identical to this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2281336/altering-a-table-column-to-accept-more-characters except for the fact that I want fewer characters instead of more. I have a column in one of my tables that holds nine-digit entries. A developer previously working on the table mistakenly set the column to hold ten-digit entries. I need to change the type from CHAR(10) to CHAR(9). Following the instructions from the discussion linked above, I wrote the statement ALTER TABLE [MY_TABLE] ALTER COLUMN [MY_COLUMN] CHAR(9); This returns the error message "String or binary data would be truncated". I see that my nine-digit strings have a space appended to make them ten digits. How do I tell SQL Server to discard the extra space and convert my column to a CHAR(9) type?

  • Is learning the Caché database hard coming from relational databases and object oriented programming

    I am currently running the local version of Caché on my system in order to determine if I can (and will) take on a new possible project. The current project uses Delphi 7 as a front end calling a Caché dll where the business logic is stored in the database. I have a background of Sqlserver and Firebird (and before Access and Paradox) as databases. I use Delphi 7 for 95% of my Windows development, so I know about object programming. I would like to recieve opinions from persons having used Caché and either SqlServer, Firebird or Oracle and having developed in Delphi (or C++ or C# - an object oriented language). I have read the pro's and con's from other questions, but I am not asking for this, I need input from Caché developers. Thanks in advance.

  • Silverlight DataGrid Exception Reordering Column Headers

    I'm trying to set the initial display order of the column headers in a silverlight datagrid by changing the column header DisplayIndex values. If I try to set the column order at page load time, I get an out of range exception. If I set the column order (same routine) at a later time like, in a button click handler, it works. Is this just a bug in the silverlight datagrid control? Suggestions for a possible work around?

  • SlickGrid V2.0 Column name/id does not follow column when dragging

    I have an application (using SlickGrid) where I need to get the column name or id at any time when user clicks on a cell (this pulls up a menu specific to the data in that column/cell). Grid works fine initially but if the column is moved (drag/drop), the column name/id does not follow the drop but remains mapped to it's initial column position. Has anyone else seen this and, if so, how did you fix it? Thanks

  • Unittesting aspect-oriented features.

    Hi, I'd like to know what would you propose as the best way to unit test aspect-oriented application features (well, perhaps that's not the best name, but it's the best I was able to come up with :-) ) such as logging or security? These things are sort of omni-present in the application, so how to test them properly? E.g. say that I'm writing a Cherrypy web server in Python. I can use a decorator to check whether the logged-in user has the permission to access a given page. But then I'd need to write a test for every page to see whether it works oK (or more like to see that I had not forgotten to check security perms for that page). This could maybe (emphasis on maybe) be bearable if logging and/or security were implemented during the web server "normal business implementation". However, security and logging usually tend to be added to the app as an afterthough (or maybe that's just my experience, I'm usually given a server and then asked to implement security model :-) ). Any thoughts on this are very welcome. I have currently 'solved' this issue by, well - not testing this at all. Thanks.
