  • Skynet Big Data Demo Using Hexbug Spider Robot, Raspberry Pi, and Java SE Embedded (Part 3)

    In Part 2, I described what connections you need to make for this demo using a Hexbug Spider Robot, a Raspberry Pi, and Java SE Embedded for programming. Here are some photos of me doing the soldering. Software engineers should not be afraid of a little soldering work. It's all good. See: Skynet Big Data Demo (Part 2) One thing to watch out for when you open the remote is that there may be some glue covering the contact points. Make sure to use an Exacto knife or small screwdriver to scrape away any glue or non-conductive material covering each place where you need to solder. And after you are done with your soldering and you gave the solder enough time to cool, make sure all your connections are marked so that you know which wire goes where. Give each wire a very light tug to make sure it is soldered correctly and is making good contact. There are lots of videos on the Web to help you if this is your first time soldering. Check out Laday Ada's (from adafruit.com) links on how to solder if you need some additional help: http://www.ladyada.net/learn/soldering/thm.html If everything looks good, zip everything back up and meet back here for how to connect these wires to your Raspberry Pi.   • Suggestions for connecting .NET WPF GUI with Java SE Server

    BACKGROUND We are building a Java (SE) trading application which will be monitoring market data and sending trade messages based on the market data, and also on user defined configuration parameters. We are planning to provide the user with a thin client, built in .NET (WPF) for managing the parameters, controlling the server behavior, and viewing the current state of the trading. The client doesn't need real-time updates; it will instead update the view once every few seconds (or whatever interval is configured by the user). The client has about 6 different operations it needs to perform with the server, for example: CRUD with configuration parameters query subset of the data receive updates of current positions from server It is possible that most of the different operations (except for receiving data) are just different flavors of managing the configuration parameters, but it's too early in our analysis for us to be sure. To connect the client with the server, we have been considering using: SOAP Web Service RESTful service building a custom TCP/IP based API (text or xml) (least preferred - but we use this approach with other applications we have) As best as I understand, pros and cons of the different web service flavors are: SOAP pro: totally automated in .NET (and Java), modifying server side interface require no code changes in communication layer, just running refresh on Web Service reference to regenerate the classes. con: more overhead in the communication layer sending more text, etc. We're not using J2EE container so maybe doesn't work so well with J2SE REST pro: lighter weight, less data. Has good .NET and Java support. (I don't have any real experience with this, so don't know what other benefits it has.) con: client will not be automatically aware if there are any new operations or properties added (?), so communication layer needs to be updated by developer if server interface changes. con: (both approaches) Server cannot really push updates to the client at regular intervals (?) (However, we won't mind if client polls the server to get updates.) QUESTION What are your opinions on the above options or suggestions for other ways to connect the 2 parts? (Ideally, we don't want to put much work into the communication layer, because it's not the significant part of the application so the more off-the-shelf and automated the better.)

  • Clicking far away in vim in tmux in urxvt

    I use vim inside tmux inside urxvt, and the mouse works perfectly well for clicking and selecting text, except when I want to click too far to the right. It seems to be related to the distance in number of columns from the left. When I go beyond column ~200 (not sure about the exact number), clicking simply does nothing. Note that it's not related to a vim window: with two vim windows taking ~150 columns each, clicking will not work after the ~50th column in the second window. It's related to the whole vim session. Also note that clicking far away in a big tmux pane (200 columns) works perfectly. In my .tmux.conf I have this line: set -g default-terminal "screen-256color" and in my .vimrc I have this: if &term =~ "^screen" autocmd VimEnter * silent !echo -ne "\033Ptmux;\033\033]12;7\007\033\\" let &t_SI = "\<Esc>Ptmux;\<Esc>\<Esc>]12;5\x7\<Esc>\\" let &t_EI = "\<Esc>Ptmux;\<Esc>\<Esc>]12;7\x7\<Esc>\\" autocmd VimLeave * silent !echo -ne "\033Ptmux;\033\033]12;14\007\033\\" end It changes the cursor's color depending on the editing mode of vim, and it works, meaning that tmux really sets $TERM to "screen-256color" — but I don't know if this has any relevance with my mouse problem. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, vim 7.3, tmux 1.6 and rxvt-unicode 9.14. Does anybody have an idea about what is causing this problem? Thanks.

  • Oracle and Cavium to work together on Java SE 8 on 64-bit ARMv8

    We have been working for some time on a standard Oracle JDK 8 port to the upcoming introduction of 64-bit servers based on the new ARMv8 micro architecture. At ARM TechCon 2013 in Santa Clara, California, we announced a roadmap with an expected GA in 2015. This project is going very well and is ahead of schedule. We will soon be at the point where we will make binaries available outside of Oracle - first in a managed beta program with select customers/partners, and sometime during the fall of 2014 as a public early access program. Unless something changes, we are looking at a early 2015 GA. We should be able to share a detailed ramp down and GA plan by JavaOne 2014. One of the things we (obviously) need to produce a high-quality port is hardware for development and QA. We are therefore happy to announce that we will be collaborating with Cavium on this project. Cavium has been a supporter of the Java ecosystem for a long time and we have numerous joint customers running various Java versions on Cavium MIPS and ARM-based hardware. Cavium has now agreed to provide us with development hardware and engineering resources so that we can certify and optimize the initial Oracle JDK 8 release on Cavium's ThunderX hardware. This is expected to improve quality and performance of JDK 8 on ARMv8 in general, as well as on Cavium's hardware.   • Ubuntu 13.10 and Dell Inspiron 7520 SE (Intel 4000 and ATI radeon HD 7730m)

    I installed 13.10 and i have problems with my display. Everything else works fine. I cant control my brightness. I thought the graphics driver is the problem. So i went to software updates, switched to another driver (proprietary) and the Ubuntu screen went black and i wasn't able to boot either. I cant use my lap with such low brightness. Then i reinstalled 13.10 again, This time full hdd reset. Same problem occurred. I grabbed radeon hd7730m for Linux x64 from the amd site, installed it, and the screen went black with only the "x" cursor showing on the next boot. What should i need to do to make my brightness work and stabilize graphic cards as mine is switchable graphics type.

  • Windows 7 Won't connect to Wireless Router too far away (but still have 3 bars)

    I have found this problem a couple of times. Windows 7 with Intel AGN 5100 won't connect to a WPA2-PSK router when it's too far away. Both times I've had this happen I was in a foreign country (London and Stockholm), and both times I was upstairs while the router was downstairs. Now, it still has 2-3 bars when looking at local WiFi, but I get the "will not connect" error, and debugging doesn't help at all (it doesn't know what's wrong). I went downstairs and it connected immediately (but I need to be able to have it upstairs). My Android Cell Phone and iPad were able to connect upstairs just fine. Any suggestions?

    I bought new headphones just yesterday. The strange thing is when I hear sound from my headphone I feel like it is coming from far away. Main problem comes in games, when I hear the footsteps of enemies and think he is on the other side of the wall while he is near to me. :D I also heard virtual haircut on youtube . I tried this with my new headphones and HTC desire S earphones. In case of HTC earphones I felt that scissors and electric razor( @ 3:04 ) is too much near to my ear but in case of the headphones I didn't felt such thing. I felt electric razor is almost 6 inches away from my ear. Have you ever encountered such problem? What can I do in this case?

I've installed Clonezilla-SE on ubuntu Server 10.10, once installed and configured Clonezilla Server i've removed the DHCP-Server and set pxe server address in dnsmasq configuration on DHCP Server : dhcp-boot=pxelinux.0,,192.168.1.100 When i try to start from PXE a Computer in the network clonezilla start, but give me an error that the ipddress of the machine is not given by the clonezilla server and can't continue ... Someone has already tried to configure Clonezilla-SE in a similar enviroment? Is there some configuration on DRBL server of Clonezilla that i need to do ?

Im no expert, but im not sure if this is ideal. My question is, what are some good things to add to the iptables file and possibly other files which would make it harder for the attackers to attack my machine without closing out any non-attacking users.     Hi, Got two AD/DNS servers, and on the secondary I can't seem to lookup the external site www.iis.se (or any other hostname that their name servers control). The central firewall at this office allows any any outbound, tcp and udp. The DNS server has no local firewall nor antivirus. My windows client, located in the same subnet as the DNS server can do the lookup by asking the nameservers that are in control of www.iis.se.   • Far jump in ntdll.dll's internal ZwCreateUserProcess

    I'm trying to understand how the Windows API creates processes so I can create a program to determine where invalid exes fail. I have a program that calls kernel32.CreateProcessA. Following along in OllyDbg, this calls kernel32.CreateProcessInternalA, which calls kernel32.CreateProcessInternalW, which calls ntdll.ZwCreateUserProcess. This function goes: mov eax, 0xAA xor ecx, ecx lea edx, dword ptr [esp+4] call dword ptr fs:[0xC0] add esp, 4 retn 0x2C So I follow the call to fs:[0xC0], which contains a single instruction: jmp far 0x33:0x74BE271E But when I step this instruction, Olly just comes back to ntdll.ZwCreateUserProcess at the add esp, 4 right after the call (which is not at 0x74BE271E). I put a breakpoint at retn 0x2C, and I find that the new process was somehow created during the execution of add esp, 4. So I'm assuming there's some magic involved in the far jump. I tried to change the CS register to 0x33 and EIP to 0x74BE271E instead of actually executing the far jump, but that just gave me an access violation after a few instructions. What's going on here? I need to be able to delve deeper beyond the abstraction of this ZwCreateUserProcess to figure out how exactly Windows creates processes.

  • eVGA GTX 550 Ti 1GB Super OC or eVGA GTX460 SE 1GB SuperClocked OC [closed]

    I'm stuck between ´eVGA GTX 550 Ti 1GB Super OC´ and ´eVGA GTX460 SE 1GB SuperClocked OC´. I know that 460 is better in performance, but does the 550 Ti has any newer feature, which makes it better? I'll mostly use it for HD movies and HD gaming (skyrim, la noire). Would appreciate opinions about which card is better, and if you have one of these, please provide something useful information. Thanks.
