• Creating a Desktop Shortcut Using a Web Page

  I am trying to create something on a webpage that allows my users to create a desktop shortcut. Because my users are NOT technically savvy, I would like to avoid having them try to drag and drop. Is there a way that I could create a button on a webpage (either using JavaScript or .Net) that automatically creates a desktop shortcut for the user? • Copy operation fails when running executable using shortcut.

  I've coded a C# executable that uses xcopy (cmd.exe /Q /D /C xcopy [args]) to duplicate some files. If I run the .exe by double-clicking it, the xcopy operation works every time. If I run the .exe by double-clicking a shortcut to the .exe, the xcopy works only if the shortcut is in the same folder as the .exe. This makes absolutely no sense to me, I wouldn't even know where to begin to find the answer. So, you know, help.

• Folder with files shows as empty

  Last night I create a new project in Visual Studio 2010, in the folder c:\development\hobby\devices. When I navigate to that folder in a new instance of Windows Explorer, I get the 'This folder is empty.' message in the files pane. If I then, from within Visual Studio, issue the "Open containing folder command", explorer opens to the folder c:\development\hobby\devices\LoopBack, where loopback is a project under the main folder. If I paste that path into another new instance of explorer, explorer correctly opens c:\development\hobby\devices. How is this possible? SOLVED: This is what comes of typing paths instead of selecting them. Some elementary detective work yielded the following interesting results: C:\>dir dev*. • Create a Shortcut To Group Policy Editor in Windows 7

  If you’re a system administrator and find yourself making changes in Group Policy Editor, you might want to make a shortcut to it. Here we look at creating a shortcut, pinning it to the Taskbar, and adding it to Control Panel. Note: Local Group Policy Editor is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Typing gpedit.msc into the search box in the Start menu to access Group Policy Editor can get old fast. To create a shortcut, right-click on the desktop and select New \ Shortcut. Next type or copy the following path into the location field and click Next. c:\windows\system32\gpedit.msc Then give your shortcut a name…something like Group Policy, or whatever you want it to be and click Finish. Now you have your Group Policy shortcut… If you want it on the Taskbar just drag it there to pin it.   I need a command that can be run from the command line to create a folder for each file (based on the file-name) in a directory and then move the file into the newly created folders. Example : Starting Folder: Dog.jpg Cat.jpg The following command works great at creating a folder for each filename in the current working directory. for %i in (*) do md "%~ni" Result Folder: \Dog\ \Cat\ Dog.jpg Cat.jpg I need to take this one step further and move the file into the folder. What I want to achieve is: \Dog\Dog.jpg \Cat\Cat.jpg Can someone help me with one command to do all of this?

  When i use the cp or move command in a terminal window, i'm currently with bash in a certain folder like this. NES@server:~/Desktop/dir1$ And now i wanna copy a file from here ~/anotherdir/dir2 into the current chosen folder in bash (dir1) i would use the command cp ~/anotherdir/dir2/file ~/Desktop/dir1 does a shortcut string exist to refer to the current chosen directory? So that in this example i don't have to provide the full path to the target dir, but the command knows it should use the current chosen directory in bash? i.e. as ~ stands for the home directory?

• Can I force window to open on top of other windows when opened by keyboard shortcut?

  I use SpaceFM as my primary file manager on Ubuntu. I typically open folder directly by keyboard shortcuts, so, e.g. Ctrl+Super+W opens my Work folder. Specifically, I use execute the command spacefm -w /home/rasmus/Work/ by the above shortcut, with the -w ensuring that SpaceFM opens a new window. However, this new window is not always open on top of the last active window on the workspace. This is rather annoying, as it means I sometimes have to "dig" for the newly opened window. So, my question is: Is there something additional I can add to the executed command that will ensure that the fresh window is opened on top? Alternative solutions to the same effect are welcome.

• Problem in accessing Windows shared folder on Ubuntu using terminal

  Hi Guys, Description I have 2 systems with me, one running on Windows(Host) and one on Ubuntu, both on a LAN. On the Windows(Host) I develop software intended for the Linux system and because the Linux system has little external memory, my idea to overcome this is by making the project folder on the Host side a Shared Folder with full access and access it on Ubuntu over the network. To achieve this, I have installed Samba on Ubuntu, when I go to Places -> Network I can see the shared project folder and I simply mount it. A link appears on the desktop. Next, using Nautilus I open the link and I can access the contents of the shared folder. Problem Even though I mount the shared project folder, I don't see it appearing in the /media or the /mnt folder, as a result of this I don't know what path to use to access this folder, from the terminal. For example: When, I mounted my USB stick, as expected, a link for the device appears on the Desktop and I also see a folder in the media folder. So, similarly, a mounted shared folder should have appeared on the /mnt folder, too. Can anyone suggest what I should do now? There are many posts around, but no solid solution for this problem.   I'm using XFCE on a dual monitor setup, with Xorg configured to separate X screens (neither twinview nor cinerama is working on GF470 with latest nvidia drivers). I'm not using xrandr. Suppose I have firefox running on one screen (:0.0) and thunderbird on the other (:0.1). When I want to switch focus from thunderbird to firefox, I need to move my mouse pointer to the firefox window and click (alt-tab switches between windows on a single screen only). Is there any keyboard shortcut for switching focus between screens?

  I am using Gnome 3. After upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, "Ctrl-Alt-S" was reclaimed for use in toggling the shaded state of a window. I have checked the following places, and I haven't been able to find any instance of a keybinding set for toggling the shaded state. System Settings / Hardware / Keyboard / Shortcuts (as per How do I disable Ctrl+Alt+s to minimize a window?) I even tried setting a different shortcut. Made no difference. dconf-editor (now deprecated, from what I've found) gconf-editor/gsettings What am I missing?

• Folder Redirection Issues - Freezing, Strange Warnings

  I have Folder Redirection set up in a test environment for a couple accounts. I have followed the instructions for setting up the folder security settings here, and I can confirm that folders are created automatically by the system with the correct security settings when a user logs in. The GPO has been configured to automatically move user files up to the redirected folders, and this is working properly. Problems start occurring when a Windows 7 PC is in use. It is rare, but Explorer will lock up when performing a file write operation (move/copy/save from application). This results in the entire system being unusable, with only a hard reset resolving it (Task Manager doesn't start, the "three finger salute" does nothing, apps stop working). The mouse functions, but clicks do nothing. The other issue is that occasionally when copying/creating/modifying files a dialog box will pop up with the message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from XYZ\cardenas to make changes to this folder." The folder that was created by copying an existing one has the correct security settings and lists me as the owner. My company will not be implementing Folder Redirection on XP, since we are making a "clean break" with implementing new technologies with the Windows 7 rollout, so this behavior has not been - nor will be - checked for in XP.   I am aware that when using finder in List view, I can create a new folder by right-clicking on an empty row, and pressing 'New Folder'. However, when I happen to be browsing a folder with quite a lot of files (or just enough to invoke a scrollbar), there are no blank rows, and hence nowhere that I can right-click to create a new folder. This is not a big problem, I am just a whinger who likes consistency and find this frustrating. Yes, I am aware that I can press 'Shift + Cmd + N', or can simply change the Finder view. BUT, is there a way to do this within list view? Am I missing something obvious?

• Folder Disappeared In Outlook but is still searchable?

  Hi All currently having an issue where the personal folders in outlook seem to be disappearing. We have a folder called 0 Mail Filing, it seems to have disappeared, but doing a search for mail, it finds the mail and the folder is still in inbox/0 Mail Filing. Is there anyway to find the exact location, or get the folder back. We have checked all of the other subfolders and the folder is not in any of them. We are using Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2003. Thanks Jamie T

  I am aware that when using Finder in List view, I can create a new folder by right-clicking on an empty row, and pressing 'New Folder'. However, when I happen to be browsing a folder with quite a lot of files (or just enough to invoke a scrollbar), there are no blank rows, and hence nowhere that I can right-click to create a new folder.   I'm running Win XP SP3 on an IBM R50e laptop, and I just realized a folder named c8c6ac6192a47b59df in the root of my C:\ drive. I can see 2 folders in it named amd64 and i386. These two folders cannot be opened. XP says: c8c6ac6192a47b59df cannot be accessed. Access Denied. However, when I view the properties of the strangely-named folder, it shows 2 folders, 0 files, 0 bytes. I tried Unlocker to be able to unlock and delete the folder, but Unlocker says there are no handlers. What's this folder and how can I delete it?

• Monitoring folder diffs across servers with zabbix

  Problem: I want to make sure that a certain folder is equal regarding it's contents across my servers. I do not want an automatic filesync to keep them equal, changing is done manually. My initial thought was to once a day calculate some crc/hash on folder and send to Zabbix, and trigger when values differ. Is there any good tools out there that can calculate crc or similar of a folder? Anyone know of another solution that solves my problem?

• Default sort order in Windows folder

  I am running Windows 7 and I have a folder "Dropbox" inside my Documents folder. However, every time I restart Explorer and enter this folder, it is sorted by mutation date. I'd like to have it default sorted by name, which is still default in all other folders, however not in this one. Please let me know if there is a way to define this properly! Thanks in advance! Note: I actually found out that this is in every folder or library now, not only in some folders. This is the standard sort behaviour when I open explorer the first time.

  Hi. I have been using Subversion for a few days now and have a question... I have a folder deep in my subversion trunk that I want to remove and replace with another folder. I have read about this on here and tried: Export: I clicked on the folder I wanted to remove I then created a new backup folder elsewhere when prompted I then exported Delete: I next chose the delete option (in TortoiseSVN) on the folder I wanted to remove and clicked it. The folder I want to remove now has an "X" over it as does all of the subfolders and files. But, when I go to the Subversion repository on the remote server, I still see the folder I want to remove and all of its files. What do I have to do to get the clients to forget about this folder and the Subversion server to remove it permanently from its sub-folders? Thanks in advance...

• Press alt + arrow to skip full line? (Or is there an existing shortcut already..? )

  I am still a fresh Ubuntu user, and I switched from a Mac. What I can do on Mac, is I can press alt + arrow to jump one word forward or backward, or if I press cmd + arrow, I am able to jump to the start or end of the line. And that's what I would like to do in Ubuntu. I would assign it to the alt key, as ctrl is already used to skip words. I use that function a lot when coding, I like to keep my hands on the keyboard and just not touch the mouse at all, and it just saves me time for not having to hold the arrow key until I get to the end of the line (or the skip-a-word combo for that matter), or grabbing the mouse to click at the end, just to add a semicolon or something like that. It's not a huge deal, but that's just what I'm used to. I still keep my Mac partition for incompatibility issues, but I prefer Ubuntu over Mac. If there is already a shortcut to do that, I'd gladly go ahead and try getting comfortable using it, but if it is not, how could I achieve what I described above, if of course it is even possible? It can be unidirectional (changes made on the local folder has to be pushed to the remote folder but the reverse is not necessary). It should also be able to specify some excluded files/folders which do not need to be in sync. Is there such an application that you know of?
