• Trouble getting FTP login to work in IIS6

  Hello all, I'm trying to setup an FTP site for one of my clients to pickup files from us using IIS6. I've created the FTP site, have set to not isolate users (not necessary as FTP will be read only with authentication). Here's the problem. The FTP is to be password protected, so I turned of anonymous access on the FTP site. I then created a ftpuser account on the machine, and gave it read and browse directory permissions on the ftp's root directory. However, when I go to test the ftpuser login, I get a 530 "ftpuser cannot login" error. However, if I browse to same directory over HTTP (anonymous access turned off as well) and enter the ftpuser login info, I can download files and browse directories successfully. Why is the ftpuser working over HTTP but not FTP? Shouldn't I be able to login over FTP with the ftpuser login information I just created? Thanks in advance, - Frank

• Combining AD permissions with FTP

  We're using Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory controlling access to a network share. We've setup FTP so that people can access that share from outside (we used to use the PPTP VPN but for various reasons we need to switch to FTP). So far here is what we've managed to implement on the FTP: -The network share is used as the FTP root (defined as a UNC) and that is working fine. -AD authentication is working fine (wrong password and you stay out, good password you're in, password management in AD correctly synched with the FTP). -AD permissions are failing: the AD permissions on the content of the FTP root are ignored: it's either a user only has read or write access, but this applies to the whole FTP root, which obviously isn't suitable since that FTP root is initially our network share and files/folders have different AD permissions depending on people's groups... Whether we set the permissions through the share OR the FTP management interface, AD permissions are never enforced. Q1: Is that normal? Q2: If so what solutions exist to combine AD permissions with FTP on MS server 2008? Q3: If not, where should I look to fix the configuration?

  I have ftp access to a server I do not control. I'd like to start sending archives of my server's FS to that ftp. The problem is I don't have enough free space on my system to create a backup archive first (and store it on my fs) and then send it to ftp. So I'm wondering if it is possible to do something like this: tar -jcpvf - / | ftp-put ftp://user:pass@host/file.tbz Normally there is no problem doing it over ssh, but in this case I only have ftp available.

• 550 “Overwrite permission denied” when editing a file via FTP

  DreamHost recently moved my accounts to a new shared box, and now I can't edit files via UltraEdit's built in FTP client, which messes up my work flow! What did they do that this is not working now? It stopped working after they moved me. • Unable to sync files not located in the Ubuntu One folder

  I have the option to sync files in nautilus, however when the option is selected nothing happens. I am able to SLOWLY sync files in the Ubuntu One folder (unless in sub-folders), but only there. Why give the option if it does not work? This really is still beta, so to charge for this service is terrible. I am a little frustrated at the moment, I have tried all sorts; removing accounts to a fresh Ubuntu install! I am at a loss :-( Can anyone else sync files outside the Ubuntu One folder, if so how?   I am looking at FTP clients to transfer from an external FTP Server. I need to place this FTP client on a server in the DMZ that will not be routinely logged in, so the client needs to run as a service or something like that? I need the client to be able to retrieve files from the server on a schedule (Tuesday Mornings) and drop them in a local directory for pickup by another process. I would also like the solution to be capable of performing sftp transfers. • need to add secure ftp file upload area to a client's website

  This is a variation on a previous question as I am having tons of trouble finding answers in all my relentless online searches. Am designing a website for an architecture firm. They want their clients to be able to upload files to them, through a link on their site, via ftp. They also want to have a sign in for their clients, and ensure the uploads are secure. I can figure out how to make a form that has a file upload area - but just don't understand the ftp and the secure part... I understand html, css and a bit of JQuery; the rest is still very challenging to me. Have found something called net2ftp that claims to do what I'm looking for - but the even the installation instructions (for administrators, here: http://www.net2ftp.com/help.html) confuse me. Do I need a MySQL database? Where do I put in Admin password they refer to? It goes on... Is there anything "easier" out there that anyone knows of? I have read that I should be Googling "file managers" - but don't know if these can be embedded in a client's website. I even need to understand of what happens to said file, and where it ends up, when client clicks the upload link. Oh - I am so in over head on this one.

  On my old machine (back on Lucid!) I used XAMPP for local dev work. XAMPP installed everything for you, including setting up FTP to your localhost (/var/www) directory, since permissions don't allow you to write directly to it. I have a new machine running Precise, and decided to do things the grown-up way. I installed everything using tasksel, and got apache, php, mysql, and phpmyadmin up and running. But it's kind of a pain to have to create and edit all my files via gksudo gedit on the command line, and sooner or later I'm going to have to upload images. How can I set up FTP so that I can "upload" files to my localhost server?

  I recently got a malware on my website. I have made the backup of the website on my computer and trying to wipe off my FTP. I am trying to delete the root folder but getting this error message on all of the malicious files, Response: 550 Could not delete index.php: Permission denied I am the sole administrator of the ftp so permission should not have been an issue. My host provider seems not to suffer from this problem as his websites are running well without any malware. I have also tried to change the root to 777 to see if the file permission change could help me delete the files but still I am getting the same error. Please help out. Thanks

• FTP over ssh hangs on "Connection established: Waiting for Welcome Message"

  I have looked far and wide and have not quite found the answer. I am running ubuntu 11.10, openssh, and vsftpd. I am trying to configure my FTP to tunnel over ssh. My ssh connection works just fine and I can create the tunnel to my FTP port. When I go to use Filezilla to connect, it hangs at "Waiting for Welcome Message". I think it is an iptables issue, but I can't seem to figure out what needs to be changed. When I take iptables down, it connects just fine. I don't want to open any more external ports, just my one SSH port, and I can't seem to get it right on the internal port forwarding rule. I always end up opening it to the outside. I would love some help if anyone has any ideas and I hope I have made it clear. Thank you in advance!!

• Wordpress asks for FTP credentials, even though owner of the whole /var/www is www-data

  I'm trying to get Wordpress to run on my local Ubuntu 12.10 installation. When I try to install themes/plugins, it asks me for FTP credentials. I've been trying to get this to work for 2 days now. Everywhere on the web it says you should change the owner:group of your Wordpress directory to whateverowner:group runs your apache server - in my case www-data:www-data. I've done this, and even tryed setting permissions to the whole /var/www directory to 777, restarting apache and the whole system. But wordpress is still asking me for the FTP credentials. What else could this be?

  I would like to setup a basic FTP server on my Ubuntu Server install. I have been playing with VSFTPD, but am having issues getting the server to allow me to create directories and copy files. I have set the system to allow local users, but it appears that doesn't mean I get access to create directories. This may be an instance where I need to be better grounded in Unbuntu server setup in order to configure this FTP server adequately. The end goal is to be able to move files from my local dev folder into my www folder for deployment. Directories need to be able to move as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can i (in any client) add rules (filters) to an ftp program to avoid upload of certain files or folders? For example: Expression web creates those annoying _vti_cnf folders, or, certain folders in which i have the original version of a picture without a watermark that i don't want to upload. Example, i have a folder A, that has sub folders "original" and "current", i would like to add a filter, so every time i select A to be uploaded, "original" wouldn't go, but "current would".

• wordpress restored from backup asking for ftp

  I backed up my /var/www/wordpress folder to my external harddisk and restored it back. Now when I add a new plugin I am asked for ftp access to my localhost. I wonder why ? As far as I could go /var/www/wordpress and its subfolders/files are own'ed by root. I have logged in to my wordpress as admin root. I dont know why I need to setup ftpd, but I tried that too.   I am trying to make changes to my website over ftp but when I save any files it changes the permissions and owner to my username. I can edit files in the same folder trough samba without changing the permissions. I really don't understand how the permissions for the /var/www folder work and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get it to work. I have recently made changes to the permissions of the /var/www directory (following this guide) so I could modify files in the www root. Right now I have the entire contents of /var/www set as -rwxrwxr-x 1 www-data www-data but when I change a file over ftp it becomes -rw------- 1 akbkuku akbkuku, akbkuku being my username. I am using vsftpd as the server, and I login with my normal user. How do I make it leave to permissions alone? At this point I'll even take a way yo reset all the permission back to stock and I'll just never modify files in the web root.

• Can't Make Changes via FTP on my Ubuntu Server

  I'm very new to server management, I literally just set this up for the first time a couple weeks ago, no idea what I'm doing. In order to allow WordPress to run updates, apparently everything needs to be owned by www-data, but if everything is owned by www-data, I can't FTP with the user revxx14. When I try, I can't make any changes (deletions, additions, updating files, nothing. I get permission denied errors across the board). Is there a way to give my user the same permissions as www-data, so that I'll be able to keep www-data the owner, but still be able to make changes via FTP? Thanks.

  I encountered a problem that appears to be related to permissions (same as this one). When I looked at the permissions of various directories in FireFTP, they all were 0000, which is obviously nonsense, since all the other pages are served without any problems. I only have ftp access, and I think it’s a Windows server (The header says "Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5"). I’ve tried a different ftp client, with the same result. Changing the permissions results in a "'SITE CHMOD 764 [directory]': command not understood" error. A search on Google and SO for "permissions windows 0000" and similar queries didn’t turn up anything. How can I view and change the actual permissions?

• Download contents of FTP but only first 10meg of each file?

  I have an FTP of very large files scattered amonst smaller files. I was to be able to download the entire FTP contents, but limit the amount downloaded for each file to 10meg or so. So all files less than 10 meg will be in tact, but all files larger than 10 meg will have the first 10 meg of data. Is this at all possible? Is there at least a way to download all files smaller than 10meg?

Data is not as important, though the settings (which is technically data, but not that kind of data, like music, files...) and applications are. Also, it will not sync the drivers. (Example: 1 computer uses bumblebee and the other uses ATI catalyst, and maybe there's different network drivers.. etc.)

  My Desktop (Ubuntu 12.10) and Laptop (Win 7) happily sync files. The Ubuntu One folders are perfectly in sync. I have an Asus Transformer with the Ubuntu One app installed. I can read files from the cloud, and they download to a U1 folder. If I edit the files in the Asus (say a sheet in Kingsoft) it appears they never go back to the cloud unless I physically select the file to be uploaded. Is this correct?

• A little guidance setting up FTP server authentication on Windows Server 2008 R2 standard?

  I have a (clean) server running Windows Server 2008 R2 standard. I would just like to use it for serving a website and a FTP server through IIS. IIS is installed and serves my website propery. I have now added a FTP site but when I try to logon using my user/pass i get the following error: 530 User cannot login From this article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200475) I understand that these four causes can be pointed out: The Allow only anonymous connections security setting has been turned on in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Not the case The username does not have the Log on locally permission in User Manager. The user is in the Users group, however I'm not able to logon through RDP. I tried configuring this by following this article through GPMC however this only works when I'm logged in as a domain user on a domain controller which I'm not: I'm logged in as administrator The username does not have the Access this computer from the network permission in User Manager. Not sure what this implies...? The Domain Name was not specified together with the username (in the form of DOMAIN\username). Tried adding the server name: server\username, not working... I am an absolute server noob and I'd just like to be able to connect through FTP... Any guidance is highly appreciated!
