• Can't install software by terminal

• General List of Common Programming Errors

  As one journey's from apprentice to journeyman to master I've noticed that one accumulates a list of best practices for things they've been bitten by. Personally, I write most of my stuff in java & SQL so my list tends to be slated towards them. I've accumulated the following: When doing list removal, always reverse iterate Avoid adding items to a list you are currently iterating on Watch out for NullPointerExceptions Now, I know there are language specific "common errors" links out there like this one. And I'm also aware of the pragmatic programmer tips, Martin Fowler's "code smells". Does anyone know of any good lists out there of things like I've listed above (re: list removal, adding items, etc). My guess is that there are some good QA folks out there that can probably throw me a bone here. I'm not looking for things the compiler can catch - I'm looking for common things that cause bugs. In the event that there isn't a list out there already then I welcome posting your own findings here. Thanks in advance!

• Advice on how to understand in general and in practice IT Infrastructure

  My IT knowledge resides mainly in SW development. I have just some basic know how about networks. On the net I tried to get information and read books in order to better understand the overall IT infrastrcuture, but all the sources I found are too generic or, mainly, too detailed in just one aspect, making me lost. Could anyone suggest some books or web resources as good compromise in details? My goal would be able to understand the network issues and security threats when, for example, two remote system have to be setup and put in connection each other. Considering this scenario there are several aspects to consider: firewalls, intranet/internet interconnections, certificates for httpS, etc. The argument is quite wide, therefore I was looking for something that might help to start to understand this subject without going too deep in details (Computer Networks from A.Tanenbaum is a wonderful milestone, but way too specific for my scope). The quality of the software has to be high because so many people depend on it (not least the developers themselves). Because of this every major issue has resulted in a new check - either automated or manual. As a result the process of delivering software is becoming ever more burdensome. So that requires more developers which... well you can see it is a vicious circle. We now have a problem with releasing software quickly - the lead time even to change one line of code for a very serious issue is at least one day. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. • How do you QA and release software quickly (some call it agile) with a large team?

  My work used to be a smaller team. We had less than 13 devs for a while. We are now growing rapidly, and are over 20 with plans to be over 30 in a few months (triple dev size!!!) Our process for QA'ing and releasing each build is no longer working. We currently have everyone develop the new code, and stick it onto a staging environment. A few days before our weekly release, we would freeze the staging environement and QA everything new / old. By our normal release time everything was usually deemed acceptable and pushed out the door to the main site. We reached a point where our code got too big so we could no longer regress the entire site each week in QA. We were ok with that, we jsut made a list of everything important and only covered that and the new stuff. Now we are reaching a point where all the new stuff each week is becoming too big and too unstable. Our staging environment is really buggy week after week, and we are usually 1-2 hrs behind the normal release time. As the team is growing further, we are going to drown with this same process. We are re-evaluating everything, and I personally am looking for suggestions / success stories. Many companies have been where before and progressed beyond, we need to do the same

  I had a user ask me this question. We know that cars break down, but that's because of something physical (unless software is involved!). I tried to answer that software is a much younger industry, but the user countered with "didn't the automobile industry become much more stable than and reliable with less people?". I also tried to answer that software is more complex, but the user countered that there are many thousands of parts that make up a car. People that design and build cars generally just know their component(s) very well, but they still all end up working together as an end result. So, why isn't software as reliable as a car?

  My question is, who are software design engineers? And, what is the meaning of the following statement (from a software design engineer job ad)? "Application domain knowledge is essential and....." What is application domain? SDLC? My hope is to become a software engineer one day (OK, to be honest, more than that. I need to be a legend), that who do programming (They say this job has no programming). I am following final year of my Bsc(Hons) in computing and I have completed a foreign diploma, majoring software engineering - Java technologies. Will this job experience help me out to get a job in my desired position, which is mentioned above, after the degree? Wikipedia and google never gave a clear straight forward answer!! Please help!

And when the install button is pressed, I received the following message: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. • How do you name/brand software?

  I am working on an application that is brand new. We have been using an internal name up to this point, but it's not very imaginative and is definitely not good from a branding standpoint. I have been tasked to come up with a name for the software. I am really struggling with this as every name I have thought about really doesn't seem to do the software justice. I have tried acronyms, mythology names, scientific names, etc. I may be being a bit picky, but I feel like the name should just hit me when its right. Here are my requirements: The name has to be easy to say (and hopefully catchy). The name has to relate back to what the software does. The name has to be able to be branded. (For example, vivid imagery, tagline, etc.) So, although I can't give the specifics of the software, I was hoping the brains here could provide some insight as to how I should go about naming/branding a piece of software?

My guessing is that this way of estimating costs is somewhat old (COCOMO dates of 1981), hence my question: How do you estimate costs in your software? • PPA Shows Up Under "All Software" That Is No Longer Enabled

  I used to use the Aurora builds of Firefox, but now I've uninstalled Firefox and gone back to Chromium. I've removed the PPA, but it still shows up under "All Software" in the Ubuntu Software Center, when I click on the arrow to the side of it to display my PPAs. I've checked the Software Sources to see if there's anything leftover, and there's nothing. I use Y PPA Manager, and there's nothing there to remove as well. How do I get rid of it?

• Cannot Update through Manager or Terminal/ Software Center Does Not Work

  I installed Tor a few days ago via the terminal. I deleted some hashtags in the gedit polipo, and changed my proxy settings in chrome, but was unable to make it work and have since changed all of it back. I then downloaded the Tor browser bundle which works great, but ever since then have been unable to download updates or new software. The update manager says to "check internet connection" and the software center displays a mostly blank screen under apps like "rhythmbox" and just says "available from main source" when I click on "use this source" a refresh symbol appears on the upper right corner of the software center for a split second, and then nothing happens. The app does not download and isn't available in the dash. When I try via the terminal it says it's unable to connect to my ip address. I tried changing the server and unchecking all the repository options for software sources, all to no avail. WHAT DID I DO?????

  When I install a program in the Software Center that happens to install a menu option, it is discoverable through the menu, but if it is a package that is documentation, or command-line only, there is no simple way to discover how to actually access the content / software. Is there a way in the Software Center to see what files or executables were installed with a particular package so I can actually use / read it?

  My university is holding a quiz contest in 2 weeks, and I need some sort of software (desktop or web based) that can be used to manage the quiz. I need functionality like an admin panel for adding teams, creating matches between 2 teams, adding questions and answers. I then need the software to automatically display the questions, accept answers, and display and store results. Is there any software (open source/freeware) that I can use for this task. If a pre-built software is not available, which language+library+platform would you suggest I make the software in. It can be either web based or a desktop app. But I need it by 2 weeks. • Uninstalling with Ubuntu Software Center doesn't work on Ubuntu 12.04.1 64bit

  Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if the .deb package I'm installing is broken in some way (I've built it, using NetBeans 7.2), or if indeed this is a bug in Software Center. When I install this particular 32-bit .deb on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS--all updates applied--(where it was built), GDebi shows it and has an 'Uninstall' button next to it. So it works fine to uninstall it there, via the GDebi GUI. However, when I install it on 12.04.1 LTS--all updates applied--it installs fine, but then does not show up in Ubuntu Software Center as available to be uninstalled. No combination of searching finds it. However, I can from the command line, do sudo apt-get purge javafxapplication1 and it finds it and deletes it. The same thing happens when I build a 64-bit .deb and attempt to install it to the same (64-bit AMD) or a different 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.1 system. So it seems to be isolated to this NetBeans-generated .deb and the 64-bit AMD build (though I haven't tried it on a 32-bit 12.04.1 install yet). These are all on VirtualBox VMs, btw, if that matters. Any way to clean up my Software Center and see if it's something I've done to get it in this state? Could this behavior be due to how this particular .deb has been built? (It doesn't have an 'Installed-Size' control field, so I do get the "Package is of bad quality" warning when I install it--which I do by clicking 'Ignore and install' button.)
