  • using gmail to send mails from your php?

    i've read some threads here in SO that someone managed to use gmail's smtp server to send out messages from php script. so if php sends a mail to [email protected] it looks like this: php tells sendmail (smtp server) to send the message sendmail sends the message to gmail's smtp server gmail's smtp server sends the message to hotmail's smtp server so now i wonder, why should one use gmail's smtp server to send a mail? isn't it better just to send the message from sendmail to hotmail's smtp server? correct me if im wrong, but isnt all that requires for a mail to be sent a communication between TWO smtp servers, the senders and the receivers (in this case, hotmail)? and another question, why can't php just send the message directly to hotmail's smtp server, why does it have to go through a local smtp server? and why do you call it a smtp server when sendmail is just acting like a client to send a message and does not receive anything? would be great if someone could shed a light on this topic!

I assume that i don't understand how submitting/writing a message(from user to gmail servers) works, in order to be sent later to the other email address. Who can tell me how submitting a message to a web form works?

  • Chrome to download Gmail attachments to a different place

    I'm using Chrome and Gmail. When I download stuff from the web, Chrome automatically puts it in Downloads, which is fine. However, I'm aware that everything I download from Gmail is in the cloud anyway and so I don't really need it taking up space on my hard drive as well. Is there a way to have Gmail attachements automatically download to a different folder, say, Downloads\Gmail? That way I could regularly purge the ones that won't be useful for a while. (Yes, I'm aware that Word documents and the like often get changed after they arrive, I'm more focused on images, pdfs, and zip files.)

  • I'm using a shared server, and as such Gmail marks my email as spam (all from headers are different from the same IP)

    I have a shared server, meaning many people share the same IP. When I send an email, the @website.com is different from someone else that shares the same IP with me, therefore Gmail marks it as spam. For example: My website's IP is 1.2.3.4. My website is mywebsite.com Person 2's website's IP is hosted by the same host, and as such their IP is 1.2.3.4 Person 2's website is person2.com. When they send an email, it gets sent from [email protected] When I send an email, it gets sent from [email protected] According to Gmail's spam thing: "Use the same address in the 'From:' header on every bulk mail you send." Again, the only similarities between our websites is the IP. However, this causes Gmail to mark both our mail as spam. Is there a way to sort this out with Gmail?

    When I run a very simple imap_search on my GMail inbox, the search returns less messages than it should. Here is the script that anyone with a GMail account can run. $host = '{imap.gmail.com:993/imap/ssl}'; $user = 'foo'; $pass = 'bar'; $imapStream = imap_open($host,$user,$pass) or die(imap_last_error()); $messages = imap_search($imapStream,"ALL"); echo count($messages); imap_close($imapStream); This returns 39 messages. But, I've got 100 messages in my inbox, some in conversations, some forwarded from another account (SquirrelMail, FWIW). Can anyone duplicate these results, and/or tell me what's going on? I see several headers just before the body of my mail.     I have a Gmail account that imports (via POP) messages from an old Hotmail account that people still send mail to. I normally read my mail with Thunderbird, not the web interface. The thing is that Gmail imports the mails once per hour (approx), and sometimes I want to know if right now there are messages in my old account. I could just go and hit the "import now" button, but whatever. Is there someplace in the settings where I can change it so the importing happens once each, say, 15 minutes? Alternatively, is it possible to make a script that will tell Gmail to import the messages at that moment, just like it would if I went to the Settings and clicked "Check if I have mail now". I've heard about libgmail for Python, but it doesn't seem like it can do that.

This error lies only with Gmail. Experts says that Gmail requires proper working MX records where as for other emailing providers do not bother much. Is MX records the solution for my problem?     I'm currently reading Cory Doctorow's novel Little Brother which includes a part about encrypted messaging, and even wrapping messages first in my private key and then your public key. I'd like to play around with that but from what I've googled so far it seems to be a rather convoluted process, requiring installing several program components, and creating an encrypted message requires doing some manual file manipulation. I'm surprised that I can't find something like a Firefox plugin that integrates encryption into Gmail. I've seen that there is a Thunderbird PGP plugin, but I don't use T-bird. I also saw a blog post that Google apparently toyed with PGP support in 2009, but nothing has appeared in the meantime. Question: To use encryption with Gmail, is there a simpler method than creating a file locally, then encrypting that file, and finally attaching it to a regular Gmail message?

    I recently downloaded Google Chrome with Ubuntu 9.04 and love it. Ironically one site I consistently have issues with is gmail. When I enter gmail I will click a link, say an email or the inbox link. After a very long wait (on the order of 30 seconds to a couple of minutes) my page will load with an error such as: Some Gmail features have failed to load due to an Internet connectivity problem. If this problem persists, try reloading the page, using the older version, or using basic HTML mode. Learn More. Googling the symptoms has not helped. Has anyone else had any similar issues? Has anything helped?

    This is my situation: I work as a consultant, and thus work out of multiple computers: my work-laptop a desktop at my primary client my desktop at home an android smartphone an android tablet Likewise, I have multiple accounts: A Microsoft Exchange (2010 AFAIK) account A Microsoft Exchange (2007 AFAIK) account A gmail account The most important thing I need is the ability to have events in one calendar affect the free / busy status of all other accounts (so that if I am busy on Monday 9am with an event from my employer's account, it will show that time as busy in my client's account, and in the gmail account. Second thing I need is a unified view of all of my accounts' info: Appointments, email, tasks, and contacts (in that order of importance). I've already tried outlook synchronization tools such as gSyncit, to sync both exchange accounts with gmail, but this creates a mess when updating appointments (deleted appointments sometimes return, timestamps revert). Is there perhaps some way to at least synchronize the free/busy state in a way that all of my calendar apps / accounts will look there to see if I can be invited? I thought it would be a normal link, but it was a "mailto:"-link. I would like Chrome to start gmail, not my default email client.     Hello all, I am entering network over DNS's of my company. Here my company blocks lots of IP's for reasons like entertainment, sports, music, messaging boards etc. General e-mail is also one of those topics and I can't enter gmail.com. The proxy sites are also blocked in the company and the one's I have found (by spending much afford) are not accepting cookies. Also I am not able to enter the gmail from Igoogle too, this is also blocked. How can I enter gmail ? Thanks.

    Trying to import 53,800+ individual files (messages) using Gmail's POP fetcher. Gmail understandably refuses, giving the error: "Too many messages to download. There are too many messages on the other server." The folder in question looks like similar to: /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203672790.V57I586f04M867101.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203676329.V57I586f22M520117.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203677194.V57I586f26M688004.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203679158.V57I586f2bM182864.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203680493.V57I586f33M740378.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203685837.V57I586f0bM835200.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203687920.V57I586f65M995884.mail.net:2,S ... Using the shell (tcsh, sh, etc. on FreeBSD), what one-line command can I type to split this directory full of files into separate folders so Gmail only sees 1000 messages at a time? Something with find or ls | xargs mv maybe. Whatever is fastest. The desired output directory would now look something like: /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203672790.V57I586f04M867101.mail.net:2,S /usr/home/customer/Maildir/cur/1203676329.V57I586f22M520117.mail.net:2,S ... /usr/home/customer/set1/ (contains messages 1-1000) /usr/home/customer/set2/ (contains messages 1001-2000) /usr/home/customer/set3/ (etc.) Ideally, cron could run another command to automatically reverse the process in 1000 message increments every hour. So Gmail only sees & downloads 1000 at a time.

  • "SASL authentication failed" with mutt and Gmail, why?

    I am confused by this, I have installed a lot of new pkgs and followed some tutorials after googling but I keep getting this kind of SASL -err. I am not sure whether the mistake is in some Gmail settings or should I check some settings in Ubuntu?     I'm using G-Mail and Thunderbird together for an imap account. One of the limitations of G-Mail is that there's no concept of nested labels - which is fine when I'm using the account through the web interface but when I'm using Thunderbird I would like a bit more organization. Is there a way for Thunderbird to locally remap an imap folder's path? For example with a "MyCustomLabel" label: Thunderbird: "MyAccount/path/on/local/machine/MyCustomLabel" G-Mail: "MyCustomLabel" Thanks
