    I've been on vacation and preparing for Crosstalk, so its been a while since I've posted. I've seen the agenda, and I can assure you Crosstalk will be lots of fun. In addition to hearing from lots of retailers, we'll also be doing a little bowling and racing on the track. I'll be around for the sessions, the ORUG meetings, and our Customer Advisory Board so please be sure to say hello. I also just completed a white paper based on a previous blog posting which in turn was based on learnings from reading What Would Google Do? For each of Jarvis' ten rules, I discuss the concept in the context of retail and provide real-world examples. No mention of products or sales pitches at all. You can download the paper here.     Think about this: By reading this blog, you and I are connected. We have this blog and its topics in common, so there's a chance we have other things in common as well. In any relationship there is a degree of trust and influence. If you trust me, at least in terms of particular subjects, then I have some influence over you. If I buy an iPad, then there's an opportunity for me to influence your possible purchase of an over-hyped tablet that you don't really need. So what could a retailer do with this? Retailers that have fans and followers should assume that the friends of those fans and followers are more susceptible to their marketing efforts. If I'm a fan of Apple, then Apple will be more successful marketing to my friends than marketing to random people. Intuitively that makes sense, at least to me. Companies like 33Across and Pursway are already putting this theory into practice, and achieving some interesting results. Jeff Jarvis, who by-the-way is speaking at CrossTalk this year, has been discussing the power of influencers in social networks. In his blog he rails against marketers and says "messages and influence aren't the future of marketing; conversations and relationships are." Valuable messages will be passed on because they are valuable, not because someone has the power to exert influence. True enough, but that won't stop the efforts underway to leverage social networks for more targeted advertising. From a business perspective, this sounds like a goldmine to me; on a personal level, it's a bit creepy.

  • They Wrote The Book On It

    First of all, an apology to you all for my not posting this yesterday, when I should have. For those of you bloggers out there, you know the difference between "Save" and "Preview." But I temporarily forgot it. Nevertheless, while I'm not impressed with this mishap, I'm blown away by the initiative three of my colleagues have taken. Jeff Saenger, Tim Koehler, and Louis Peters, recently wrote a book, "Oracle CRM On Demand Deployment Guide." Not only that, they got this book PUBLISHED. These guys know their stuff. They have worked in the CRM industry for many years. And trust me, they command a lot of respect inside this organization. In the words of Louis Peters (who posted this verbiage yesterday on LinkedIn), "We've assembled all the best practices and lessons learned over the past six years working with CRM On Demand. The book covers a range of topics - working with SaaS-based applications, planning and executing a successful rollout, designing elegant and high-performing applications, and working effectively with Oracle. We even included several sample designs based on successful real-world deployments. Our main target audience is the CRM On Demand project team - sponsors, project managers, administrators, developers - really anyone planning, implementing or maintaining the application." Now these guys don't know it, but I'll be interviewing one of them and including audio excerpts of that conversation right here next Wednesday. In the meantime, if you want to learn more about successful CRM deployments in general, and working with Oracle CRM On Demand in particular, you should check out this book.

    I would like to upgrade my FluentNHibernate to version 1.1, but I found out it uses Castle.Core 1.1. I use Castle.Windsor 1.2 in my app which works with Castle.Core 1.2. I now need to find a version of Castle.Windsor that uses this earlier version of Castle.Core, but I can't find it anywhere. What do you recommend I should do? Wait for a version of FluentNHibernate that uses the latest Castle.Core? OR build FluentNHibernate 1.1 from source using the latest Castle.Core? OR downgrade my Castle.Windsor version?

  • Windsor IHandlerSelector in RIA Services Visual Studio 2010 Beta2

    Hi everybody! I want to implement multi tenancy using Windsor and i don't know how to handle this situation: i succesfully used this technique in plain ASP.NET MVC projects and thought incorporating in a RIA Services project would be similar. So i used IHandlerSelector, registered some components and wrote an ASP.NET MVC view to verify it works in a plain ASP.NET MVC environment. And it did! Next step was to create a DomainService which got an IRepository injected in the constructor. This service is hosted in the ASP.NET MVC application. And it actually ... works:i can get data out of it to a Silverlight application. Sample snippet: public OrganizationDomainService(IRepository<Culture> cultureRepository) { this.cultureRepository = cultureRepository; } Last step is to see if it works multi-tenant-like: it does not! The weird thing is this: using some line of code and writing debug messages in a log file i verified that the correct handler is selected! BUT this handler seems not to be injected in the DomainService. I ALWAYS get the first handler (that's the logic in my SelectHandler) Can anybody verify this behavior? Is injection not working in RIA Services? Or am i missing something basic?? Development environment: Visual Studio 2010 Beta2 Thanks in advance

    Hey I'm trying to connect to my Wcf service which is configured using castles wcf facility. When I go to the service in a browser i get: Metadata publishing for this service is currently disabled. Which lists a load of instructions which i cant do because the configuration isnt in the web.config. when I try to connect using VS/add service reference i get: The HTML document does not contain Web service discovery information. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://s.ibzstar.com/userservices.svc'. Content Type application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8 was not supported by service http://s.ibzstar.com/userservices.svc. The client and service bindings may be mismatched. The remote server returned an error: (415) Cannot process the message because the content type 'application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8' was not the expected type 'text/xml; charset=utf-8'.. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again. Anyone know what I need to do to get this working?     Hi, Im having issues with my WCF service. I need to do a windsor container injection pre application_start and noticed i can use the AppInitialise method. It works on visual studio debug but when I deploy to IIS the code does not get fired.. I initialized the class as follows public static class Class1 { public static void AppInitialize() { IWindsorContainer container; container = new WindsorContainer("windsor.xml"); container.AddFacility(); container.Resolve(); } } Is there any special task i need to do to get this to work on IIS.     I'm self-hosting several services where I do this to register the service: host = new ServiceHost(typeof(MyService)); host.Open(); Behind the scenes, wcf instantiates my service via the default constructor. Is it possble to use the WCF Integration Facility of Castle Windsor to get WCF to call on Windsor to create the service when I am self-hosting? The example seems shows IIS hosted services where the 1st line of the MyService.svc file looks like: <%@ServiceHost language=c# Debug="true" Service="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService" Factory=WindsorServiceHostFactory%> where presumably a factory is used by wcf to instantiate the service instance.

  • Does NInject work in medium trust hosting?

    I'm doing shared hosting with GoDaddy and I developed a sample ASP.NET MVC app using Castle Windsor and unfortunately, it didn't work in a medium trust setting. Specifically, I got this error: "[SecurityException: That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers"... etc. GoDaddy is sadly not flexible in their trust policy. I'm not tied to Windsor and would like to try another one that will work under Medium Trust. I'd actually like to use NInject, but I've read people having mixed success. The only one I've read that works with no problem is Microsoft's Unity. My question is, does NInject work in medium trust? If not, what are my options?

[SecurityException: That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers.] GoldMine.WindsorControllerFactory..ctor() in WindsorControllerFactory.cs:33 GoldMine.MvcApplication.Application_Start() in Global.asax.cs:70 My questions are Does Castle Windsor run under medium trust? Can I download the DLL's without having to recompile with nant? (as I don't have this set up and don't know nant at all) Or is there another IOC that I can use that I can download and works in Medium Trust? Thanks

I first wrote the following entry under the configSections section. <section name="castle" type="Castle.Windsor.Configuration.AppDomain.CastleSectionHandler, Castle.Windsor" /> But, when I try to create a castle node inside the configuration node as below <castle> <components> </components> </castle> I get the following error message:"*Could not find schema information for the element 'castle*'." "*Could not find schema information for the element 'components'***." Am I missing something? I can't find why. And, if I run the application anyway, I get the following error "Could not find section 'Castle' in the configuration file associated with this domain." Ps.// The sample comes from "Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework"/Steven Sanderson/APress ISBN-13 (pbk): 978-1-4302-1007-8" on page 99. Thank you for the help ============================================================ Since I believe to have done exactly what's said in the book and did not succed, I ask the same question in different terms.     Hello, I am using Castle.Windsor as an IOC. So I am trying to resolve a service type in the constructor of an HTTPHandler. I keep receiving this error, "Constructor on type: "Namespace.type" not found."     I am using a IoC Container (Castle Windsor) to instantiate classes accordingly to the configuration file. If I want to add classes from a new dll that didn't exist when I compiled the project, there is any way to do that without recompiling? Edit: As this project is a Service Host for WCF service, and the classes that I want to include after compilation are WCF Services I would like also to know if I can include endpoint information about new services without recompiling.

    Can anyone point me towards some good documentation / code examples on how best to manage the configuration of a DI container in a scenario where you need different configuations sets? We have a layered, distributed application that has multiple entry points (ie; a website, winforms app, office plugin etc). Depending on how you are using the solution (through a UI vs. an automated workflow for example), it needs to be configured slightly differently. We are using Windsor, and it's fluent configuration capabilities.

  • ASP.NET-MVC2 Preview 1: Are There Any Breaking Changes?

    I was following Steven Sanderson's 'Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework' book. On page 132, in accordance with the author's recommendation, I downloaded the ASP.NET MVC Futures assembly, and added it to my MVC project. Then, without encouragement from the author, I downloaded, installed, and incorporated the ASP.NET MVC2 Preview 1 dlls into my project. Now, I can no longer load the website. That is, when I hit F5 in Visual Studio, I get this error. In retrospect, I think it was a really bad idea to assume that ASP.NET MVC2 Preview 1 would only be additive; but I'd like other people to weigh in. Has anyone noticed any breaking changes in ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview 1? Also - Has anyone noticed any changes that impact Castle Windsor? Also, please let me know if I should be mindful of IIS6 vs. IIS7 ramifications.

This library enabled me to let the user choose which test(s) to run, simply by changing the configuration file. Have I realized what IoC containers are about? I'm not sure. Even Joel said here on SO that IoC are difficult to understand. From my example, what do you conclude? Am I using IoC container for exactly what they were designed for? Or I am just using one of its secondary features?

  • Using IOC in a remoting scenario

    I'm struggling with getting IOC to work in a remoting scenario. I have my application server set up to publish Services (SingleCall) which are configured via XML. This works just like this as we all know: RemotingConfiguration.Configure(ConfigFile, true); lets say my service looks like that (pseudocode) public class TourService : ITourService { IRepository _repository; public TourService() { _repository = new SqlServerRepository(); } } But what I rather would like to have sure looks like this: public class TourService : ITourService { IRepository _repository; public TourService(IRepository repository) { _repository = repository; } } On the client side we do something like that (pseudocode again): (ITourService)Activator.GetObject(ITourService, tcp://server/uri); This prompts the server to create a new instance of my TourService class... However this doesn't seem to work out well because the .NET Remoting Infrastructure want's to know the type it should publish but I would rather like to point it to the way how it could retrieve the object it should publish. In other words, route it through the IOC process pipe of - let's say windsor castle - for example. Currently I'm a bit lost on that task...
