  • Converting .docx to pdf (or .doc to pdf, or .doc to odt, etc.) with libreoffice on a webserver on the fly using php

    - by robertphyatt
Ok, so I needed to convert .docx files to .pdf files on the fly, but none of the free php libraries that were available let me do it on my server (a webservice was not good enough). Basically either I needed to pay for a library (and have it maybe suck) or just deal with the free ones that didn't convert the formatting well enough. Not good enough! I found that LibreOffice (OpenOffice's successor) allows command line conversion using the LibreOffice conversion engine (which DID preserve the formatting like I wanted and generally worked great). I loaded the latest version of Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) onto my Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) on my computer and found that I was able to easily convert files using the commandline like this: libreoffice --headless -convert-to pdf fileToConvert.docx -outdir output/path/for/pdf I thought: sweet...but I don't have admin rights on my host's web server. I tried to use a "portable" version of LibreOffice that I obtained from http://portablelinuxapps.org/ but I was unable to get it to work on my host's webserver, because my host's webserver didn't have all the dependencies (Dependency Hell! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_hell) I was at a loss of how to make it work, until I ran across a cool project made by a Ph.D. student (Philip J. Guo) at Stanford called CDE: http://www.stanford.edu/~pgbovine/cde.html I will let you look at his explanations of how it works (I followed what he did in http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6XdwHo1BWwY, starting at about 32:00 as well as the directions on his site), but in short, it allows one to avoid dependency hell by copying all the files used when you run certain commands, recreating the linux environment where the command worked. I was able to use this to run LibreOffice without having to resort to someone's portable version of it, and it worked just like it did when I did it on Ubuntu with the command above, with a tweak: I needed to run the wrapper of LibreOffice the CDE generated. So, below is my PHP code that calls it. In this code snippet, the filename to be copied is passed in as $_POST["filename"]. I copy the file to the same spot where I originally converted the file, convert it, copy it back and then delete all the files (so that it doesn't start growing exponentially). I did it this way because I wasn't able to make it work otherwise on the webserver. If there is a linux + webserver ninja out there that can figure out how to make it work without doing this, I would be interested to know what you did. Please post a comment or something if you did that. <?php //first copy the file to the magic place where we can convert it to a pdf on the fly copy($time.$_POST["filename"], "../LibreOffice/cde-package/cde-root/home/robert/Desktop/".$_POST["filename"]); //change to that directory chdir('../LibreOffice/cde-package/cde-root/home/robert'); //the magic command that does the conversion $myCommand = "./libreoffice.cde --headless -convert-to pdf Desktop/".$_POST["filename"]." -outdir Desktop/"; exec ($myCommand); //copy the file back copy("Desktop/".str_replace(".docx", ".pdf", $_POST["filename"]), "../../../../../documents/".str_replace(".docx", ".pdf", $_POST["filename"])); //delete all the files out of the magic place where we can convert it to a pdf on the fly $files1 = scandir('Desktop'); //my files that I generated all happened to start with a number. $pattern = '/^[0-9]/'; foreach ($files1 as $value) { preg_match($pattern, $value, $matches); if(count($matches) ?> 0) { unlink("Desktop/".$value); } } //changing the header to the location of the file makes it work well on androids header( 'Location: '.str_replace(".docx", ".pdf", $_POST["filename"]) ); ?> And here is the tar.gz file I generated I generated with CDE. To duplicate what I did exactly, put the tar.gz file in a folder somewhere. I will call that folder the "root". Make a new folder called "documents" in the "root" folder. Unpack the tar.gz and run the php script above from the "documents" folder. Success! I made a truly portable version of LibreOffice that can convert files on the fly on a webserver using 100% free, open source software!

  • What was your the most impressive technical programming achievement performed to impress a romantic

    - by DVK
OK, so the archetypal human story is for a guy to go out and impress the girl with some wonderful achievement like slaying a dragon or building a monument or conquering neighboring tribe. This being enlightened 21st century on SO, let's morph this into a: StackOverflower performing a feat of programming to impress a romantic interest. There are two ways to do this: Technical achievement: Impressing a person with suitable background/understanding of programming with actual coding powerss you displayed. A dumb movie example would be that kid in "Hackers" move showing off his hacking skills in front of Angeline Jolie. Artistic achievement: Impressing a person with a result of running said code, whether they understand just how incredible the code itself is. An example is the animated ANSI rose (for a guy who actually wrote the ANSI code) This question is only about the first kind (technical achievements) - e.g. the person of interest was presented with impressive code/design that (s)he was able to properly appreciate. Rules (what doesn't qualify): The target audience must have been a person of romantic interest (prospective or present significant other or random hook-up). E.g. showing your program to your sister who's also a software developer doesn't count. The achievement must have been done specifically with the goal to impress such a person. However, it is OK if the achievement was done to impress a generic qualifying person, not someone specific. Although... if you write code to impress girls in general, I'd say "get a better idea of the opposite sex" The achievement must have been done with the goal of impressing the person. In other words, if you would have done it without romantic interest's knowledge anyway, it doesn't count. As examples, the following does not count: programming for your job. Programming for a coding contest. Open Source program that you'd have done anyway. The precise nature of the awesomeness of the achievement is somewhat irrelevant - from learning entire J2EE in 2 days to writing fancy game engine to implementing Python compiler in LOGO. As long as it's programming/software development related. The achievement should preferably be something other people would rank highly as well. If your date was impressed with your skill at calculating Fibonacci sequence without recursive function calls, it doesn't mean most developers will be. But it does mean you need to start finding better things to do on dates ;)

  • LibreOffice Calc/Writer: How to get the dates for specifc weekdays per month?

    - by Phin
I'm stuck with a problem in LibreOffice Calc or Writer: I try to get a table of dates for every monday, wednesday and friday per month, something that I can load every new month wich sets the dates automatically so I just have to print the page on paper. :) In Writer the fieldcommand for date can't obviosly do the job (it only can be set to a fix date, the todays date or +offset as far as I can see). In Calc I tried it with the autofill but that obviosly works for the first 3 days only. I might add that I'm lost with Excel/calc formulars... Any help?

  • How can I create a custom OpenOffice / LibreOffice Writer table AutoFormat scheme?

    - by Merlyn Morgan-Graham
None of the basic table AutoFormat schemes in LibreOffice Writer have both an alternation style defined and no sum column/row style defined. If they have alternation, they always seem to have sums. Because of this I'd like to define my own table scheme. What is the easiest way to accomplish this? A WYSIWYG isn't totally necessary. I am not scared of editing simple XML files as long as I have examples to work from, and if I don't have to edit base install files. If I can place them in a custom area or my user profile directory then that would be best. If there is a way to get the GUI Add functionality to properly recognize an alternation then that would also be helpful.

  • How do I get a chart in LibreOffice Calc to have regular time intervals when the data is not regular?

    - by Dave M G
I have an area chart in LibreOffice Calc where I would like the X axis to be measured in one month intervals spaced evenly apart. The data going into the graph, however, is not regularly spaced at one month. There can be zero, one, or two entries in any given month. Right now, the chart is keeping the horizontal pacing of the data consistent and adjusting the X axis to accomodate, which is the reverse of what I want. In the example picture below, you can see that there is one data point in March, one in May, and two in June. Along the X axis, April is gone and June is taking up double the space. Instead of this, I'd like the months to stay the same spacing so there is April, May, and June, and for the data area of the chart to compress or extend horiozontally as necessary. I have tried editing the X axis and adjusting the time intervals, but this doesn't seem to do anything. Is what I'm after possible?

  • Custom CSV (.csv) filter for OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice?

    - by anon
Is it possible to create a some kind of 'custom CSV filter' for OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice spreadsheet program. What I need is to have the program to use predefined CSV settings for loading and saving when I open, let's say file named 'somefile.myext'. Also I would need the loaded data to be placed in a prestyled spreadsheet. In this particular case, I would need the CSV settings to have tab as a field delimiter and no text delimiter at all. Prestyled spreadsheet would contain Blue gray coloring for every odd row (achieved with conditional formatting formula), some font styling and probably some column width definitions.

  • How can I insert auto-numbered sentences in LibreOffice Writer?

    - by Felix Dombek
I want to achieve a formatting like this: Some text which references (1), for example because (1) might be an example sentence for some grammatical structure which is explained here. This is auto-numbered text object 1.                                                                                      (1) The number on the right is assigned automatically. If another auto-numbered object is inserted before this, it will change to (2), as will all references in the surrounding text. Some more surrounding text. How can I insert such numbered sentences and references to them in LibreOffice 3.5.1?

  • Thumbnails for certain formats not appearing in Nautilus

    - by Ryan McClure
The following formats do not have an icon in Nautilus: .odt .odb And, some of my older documents are missing their thumbnails, all of which are either .odt or .odp. I just purged and reinstalled LibreOffice today...could this be the reason why? Edit: Sorry about my vagueness I am on Ubuntu 11.10, using LibreOffice 3.4 340m1(Build:402) that comes by default in the repos. Here's a screenshot of what I see for these formats.

  • Disable updates on certain softwares

    - by tadatma
When on trying to update an ubuntu distro (or for that matter any linux distribution) I often find a list of updates amounting to more than 150 mb or so. To my displeasure I find that the culprit more often than not has to do with libreoffice. I know I can untick those connected with libreoffice but I wonder if there is an elegant way; may be a small program in between that helps me untick those programs that I wish to stay un-updated.

  • How do I select a subset of the available fonts for a particular application

    - by Aleve Sicofante
Having all those exotic fonts (for an European), like Chinese, Hindi or Russian fonts, is nice for a web browser. You never get those ugly unicode blocks and get the original glyphs instead. However, having the font menu in LibreOffice or AbiWord populated with all of those fonts is cumbersome and useless for most installations. Having more than a few fonts in note taking applications is also somewhat overkill. Is there a way I can designate a subset of all the available fonts to work with a particular application? I understand the app itself could do it, but I'm asking for a way to make LibreOffice, for instance, not see certain fonts, only my selection of "useful for text processing" subset.

  • OpenOffice doesn't work

    - by dn.usenet
I installed OpenOffice on 12.04, and set it as the default utility for spreadsheets, but it doesn't run at all. While trying to troubleshoot, I read that it is not recommended to install it alongside LibreOffice. I am about to uninstall OpenOffice because I don't know how to get it working, and LibreOffice is opening my spreadsheet just fine. But just out of curiosity, I also read that I should try deleting .openoffice.org folder; but from where? I don't see it under /usr/lib, nor under my /home.

  • LibreOffice UNO Java API: how to open a document, execute a macro and close it?

    - by MarcoS
    I'm working on LibreOffice server-side: on the server I run soffice --accept=... Then I use Java LibreOffice client API's to apply a macro on a document (calc or writer). The java execution does not give any error, but I do not get the job done (macro code is executed, but it's effects are not in the output file). More, after macro script is invoked, the Basic debugger window appears, apparently stopped on the first line of my macro; F5 does not restart it... This is the relevant code I'm using: try { XComponentContext xLocalContext = Bootstrap.createInitialComponentContext(null); System.out.println("xLocalContext"); XMultiComponentFactory xLocalServiceManager = xLocalContext.getServiceManager(); System.out.println("xLocalServiceManager"); Object urlResolver = xLocalServiceManager.createInstanceWithContext( "com.sun.star.bridge.UnoUrlResolver", xLocalContext); System.out.println("urlResolver"); XUnoUrlResolver xUrlResolver = (XUnoUrlResolver) UnoRuntime.queryInterface(XUnoUrlResolver.class, urlResolver); System.out.println("xUrlResolve"); try { String uno = "uno:" + unoMode + ",host=" + unoHost + ",port=" + unoPort + ";" + unoProtocol + ";" + unoObjectName; Object rInitialObject = xUrlResolver.resolve(uno); System.out.println("rInitialObject"); if (null != rInitialObject) { XMultiComponentFactory xOfficeFactory = (XMultiComponentFactory) UnoRuntime.queryInterface( XMultiComponentFactory.class, rInitialObject); System.out.println("xOfficeFactory"); Object desktop = xOfficeFactory.createInstanceWithContext("com.sun.star.frame.Desktop", xLocalContext); System.out.println("desktop"); XComponentLoader xComponentLoader = (XComponentLoader)UnoRuntime.queryInterface( XComponentLoader.class, desktop); System.out.println("xComponentLoader"); PropertyValue[] loadProps = new PropertyValue[3]; loadProps[0] = new PropertyValue(); loadProps[0].Name = "Hidden"; loadProps[0].Value = Boolean.TRUE; loadProps[1] = new PropertyValue(); loadProps[1].Name = "ReadOnly"; loadProps[1].Value = Boolean.FALSE; loadProps[2] = new PropertyValue(); loadProps[2].Name = "MacroExecutionMode"; loadProps[2].Value = new Short(com.sun.star.document.MacroExecMode.ALWAYS_EXECUTE_NO_WARN); try { XComponent xComponent = xComponentLoader.loadComponentFromURL("file:///" + inputFile, "_blank", 0, loadProps); System.out.println("xComponent from " + inputFile); String macroName = "Standard.Module1.MYMACRONAME?language=Basic&location=application"; Object[] aParams = null; XScriptProviderSupplier xScriptPS = (XScriptProviderSupplier) UnoRuntime.queryInterface(XScriptProviderSupplier.class, xComponent); XScriptProvider xScriptProvider = xScriptPS.getScriptProvider(); XScript xScript = xScriptProvider.getScript("vnd.sun.star.script:"+macroName); short[][] aOutParamIndex = new short[1][1]; Object[][] aOutParam = new Object[1][1]; @SuppressWarnings("unused") Object result = xScript.invoke(aParams, aOutParamIndex, aOutParam); System.out.println("xScript invoke macro" + macroName); XStorable xStore = (XStorable)UnoRuntime.queryInterface(XStorable.class, xComponent); System.out.println("xStore"); if (outputFileType.equalsIgnoreCase("pdf")) { System.out.println("writer_pdf_Export"); loadProps[0].Name = "FilterName"; loadProps[0].Value = "writer_pdf_Export"; } xStore.storeToURL("file:///" + outputFile, loadProps); System.out.println("storeToURL to file " + outputFile); xComponent.dispose(); xComponentLoader = null; rInitialObject = null; System.out.println("done."); System.exit(0); } catch(IllegalArgumentException e) { System.err.println("Error: Can't load component from url " + inputFile); } } else { System.err.println("Error: Unknown initial object name at server side"); } } catch(NoConnectException e) { System.err.println("Error: Server Connection refused: check server is listening..."); } } catch(java.lang.Exception e) { System.err.println("Error: Java exception:"); e.printStackTrace(); }

  • Why does my Canon printer print document pages at ~25% size?

    - by Erlend Alvestad
I'm using a Canon PIXMA MP250, and I'm running 12.04 LTS. The printer's been working fine for the couple of months I've been a Linux user. That is, until today. I just printed a 1-page ODT document from LibreOffice. Instead of filling the sheet, the document occupies only a little less than 25% of the paper, in the top left corner, and the text has also shrunk to something like 5pt. I looked at the paper format settings for the document and printer, which were set to "letter". I changed these to "A4", hoping that would solve the issue. There was no change, however. I tried printing a different document in LibreOffice and got the same result. I tried exporting the original document to PDF and printing it through Document Viewer. Same result. I then printed a web page from Google Chrome. No formatting problems there. In all cases the print preview looks fine.

  • OpenOffice Calc doesn't show up in the alt-tab window switcher

    - by Abe
I just upgraded to ubuntu 12.04, and it's mostly working. My biggest problem so far: OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc doesn't show up under the task switcher. When I pres alt-tab to change windows, I can see all my windows except for any OpenOffice documents I have open. If I minimize other windows, then I can get to my Calc documents, but Alt-Tab just doesn't work. It only seems to be a problem with Calc. Writer and Impress both work fine. I do a lot of work in spreadsheets, so this is really messing up my flow. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

  • How to embed a shell and browser into a presentation?

    - by Karl Bielefeldt
I am responsible for demonstrating changes to our software every two weeks. Since the software has both telnet and web interfaces, I think it would help the demo go more smoothly if I could embed a web browser and a telnet client or shell directly into presentation slides, like this: My current idea is to write extensions for LibreOffice to do it, but obviously I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I can help it. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this? I prefer PowerPoint 2007 or LibreOffice on Windows 7, but am open to suggestions for any software or OS.

  • Why does my cursor jump when typing in ubuntu 11.10

    - by Stephen Myall
When typing in Ubuntu my cursor jumps around and its not application specific. It doesn't matter or Im filing in a web form, writing an e-mail or using LibreOffice or Lyx. Im using a Sony Vaio 64bit machine. i read a previous question (link below) on this subject which indicates it may have something to do with the touchpad settings. as this has occurred in previous Ubuntu distros Im guess it is somekind of hardware issue. How do you turn of the touchpad when typing to avoid the cursor jumping around? I'd be grateful if anyone can make this stop Stephen

  • Unity Dash to search only in Documents

    - by bioShark
I have a document (LibreOffice Calc Spreadsheet) which is in my ~/Documents folder. However, I have the same file (older version of it) on a mounted drive. In the past few weeks I have opened the file from both my ~/Documents folder and from the mounted drive. However, the latest version is the one from ~/Documents. When I open the Dash and look in the documents lens, of course I will find my file twice there. One from the mounted disk and one from ~/Documents. But I don't know which one is which. So, my question is: How can I limit the document lens to look for documents only from my /home. Or to exclude mounted disks from the search. Thanks. I use Ubuntu 12.04.

  • still getting 403 on apt-get install: no proxy, urls seems valid

  • How to switch language spellingcheck on the fly when changing keyboard with alt-shift?

    - by Kosmas Papagiannis
i just recently installed ubuntu 11.04, english version that comes with libreoffice. I also installed Greek language. Is there some way to make Writer recognize my input language (English - Greek) and apply spelling check on the fly, according to my input language? For example, i type a sentence in English, then switch keyboard input (Alt-Shift) and type a sentence in Greek. Writer does no recognize the Greek sentence and underlines it red. MS Office and OO under Windows does it... As soon as you change input language (keyboard layout), the real time spelling checker changes also between languages... Thank you in advance...

  • How can a new programmer impress the software engineer (boss)? [closed]

    - by Pablo
Note 1/8/2011: As of this Monday, I'm the new software engineer. Turns out I did not impress the S.E., but ended impressing the CEO. See Joel, not everyone has to leave their Honda idling in front of the airport. =) Ashton, this one is for you buddy. Hi, I'm working at my first programming job. My boss is a very smart software engineer, and I feel like I have very little to offer compared to him. Problem is, he is always busy, and needs someone to help him out. I feel like I'm not good enough, but I still want to succeed. I want to be a great programmer. What can I do to impress him? Thank you.

  • Typing math formulas in LaTex and getting them in MathType format?

    - by Tim
I am asked to type some math formulas that can work in Microsoft Office and MathType equation editor. But I only have access to Ubuntu 12.04 near me, there is LibreOffice available under Ubuntu as well, but I am used to type math formulas in LaTex. So I wonder how to provide math formulas that will work in Microsoft Office and MathType, if I work under Ubuntu, preferably with LaTex but LibreOffice being also acceptable since it is still under Ubuntu? Thanks and regards!

  • Transferring slides from one computer to another and the images are lost

    - by Erik Vold
I used OpenOffice Impress to make some slides for a presentation and when I try to transfer the slides to another computer the images are lost, with text displayed in their place describing the location that the images could be found. This happens when I save in odp and ppt and also when I try to upload the slides to Google Docs. Any idea what is wrong? While making the slides I just dragged and dropped the images into the presentation.

  • PDF form created in Libre Office - trouble with form fields and font sizing

    - by soawesomejohn
I am trying to create a PDF Form using LibreOffice. I can create the form elements and export as PDF. However, the form fields are giving me problems. The text in these fields always centers on the bottom, and often the text you input is cut off at the bottom. I found that if I make the fields larger, the text no longer cuts off, but the field is exceptionally large with lots of space above the text. I have made an odt (source) and a pdf (export) file to show what I'm running into. I tried a number of different fonts and sizes, but to make things easier, I made the field names all "field1" so that once you fill out one entry, all fields show as filled in. http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.odt http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.pdf My main question is how do I make form fields that don't cut off the text without having to make the fields way oversized? Made with LibreOffice 3.3.0

  • Creating fillable PDF form with dynamically updated fields

    - by Aputsiaq
Is there a way to create fillable PDF forms where a set of fields gets their data when one of the fields is filled out? The normal use case would be application form, where your name or membership number has to be entered on the top of each page. I am using LibreOffice 3.5.4.2. In a earlier version I was able to get the desired effect if I left the field names to be the same (i.e. the field names as seen in the Form Navigator). I'm open for using any free software tool. There is a similiar question asked elsewhere at ask.libreoffice.org.
