• Audio libraries for PC indie games [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Cross-Platform Audio API Suggestions What options are out there these days for audio playback/mixing in C++? Primarily for Windows, but portability (particularly to Mac and iOS) would be desirable. For a small indie game, potentially commercial, though - so I'm looking for something free/low-cost. My requirements are fairly basic - I don't need 3D sound, or many-channels - simple stereo is fine. Just need to be able to mix sound effects and a music stream, maybe decoding one or more compressed audio formats (.ogg/.mp3 etc), with all the basic controls over looping, pitch, volume, etc. Is OpenAL more-or-less the standard choice, or are there other good options out there?

• Dual-boot question involving separate HD and windows 8

  I use an external HD with Ubuntu+GRUB on it. This allows me to effectively "hijack" most systems. Basically it's a permanent LiveUSB - my own system wherever I go. I use it for recovery mainly when Windows systems muck up, and for portability (as I can have my system on the go, without effecting the pc I'm borrowing, much like a LiveCD). I'm about to update to Windows 8 now [on a new, different computer]. Is there any special measure I should take to do this? I've seen a similar post here, but the OP had both harddrives plugged in simultaneously - that's not exactly my setup. Thank you :) EDIT: added for clarification that this is for a totally new computer.

• How can an application (like Firefox) be forced to use a certain network interface?

  I've two interfaces: eth0 and wlan0 on a notebook. Possible use cases: eth0 grants me Internet access, and wlan0 is currently connected to a router which does not have Internet-connectivity. For development purposes, I need to connect to the wlan0 by default, but use eth0 for surfing eth0 and wlan0 are both connected to the Internet. For a torrent application, eth0 should be used for speed, but for portability of the notebook, SSH should have a connection over wlan0 eth0 is a wire connection, wlan0 is a wireless one. Sensible data should be transferred over eth0, but other traffic can go over wlan0 as well. Is there a way to force applications (like nc.traditional or firefox) to use a certain network interface? A wrapper like example-wrapper eth0 program is fine too if such program exist. It would be nice if it could configured within Firefox (in runtime). I'd like to avoid IPTables solutions if possible.

  How to create reasonable expression to store password in database using Doctrine and Zend_Auth::setCredentialTreatment()? I don't want to use md5() and the code must be portable, and with salt. I would call this not easy one to guess: setCredentialTreatment("SHA1(CONCAT(username, SHA1(CONCAT(username, ?)))"); but it is not portable to all databases. Seems that Doctrine_Expression has only md5 expression portability.

• How to get R to recognize your working directory as its working directory?

  I use R under Windows on several machines. I know you can set the working directory from within an R script, like this setwd("C:/Documents and Settings/username/My Documents/x/y/z") ... but then this breaks the portability of the script. It's also annoying to have to reverse all the slashes (since Windows gives you backslashes) Is there a way to start R in a particular working directory so that you don't need to do this at the script level?

• Can I run iOS apps on my Mac?

  I've seen a number of neat iPhone apps recently that I'd like to use. In particular, there are a number of neat musical apps (metronome, tuner, etc.) that seem highly rated, and have no real Mac equivalent. I don't have a recent iPod/iPhone/iPad (I don't need portability or a phone and it seems silly to pay hundreds of dollars to run $15 worth of apps), but I do have an Intel (C2D) Mac. Can the iPhone dev simulator, or any other emulator, download and run iPhone App Store apps?

However, at the moment Onlive is only for remotely controlling video games, and not desktops or other devices in general.   I have the following hardware: 2 Desktop PCs, running Windows XP and Ubuntu Macbook Pro a LCD monitor, a wired keyboard, and a wired mouse Currently, I'm using an oldish IOGear KVM switch to connect the two PCs to the input/output (and it works very well). I'd like a setup that includes the laptop as well, ideally maintaining as much portability as possible (meaning I'd like to be able to sit down, easily plug in my laptop, work on all computers, then easily pick up and leave with the laptop - is docking station the right word here?). • Mac friendly file sharing from VirtualBox

  I have set up Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu into a VirtualBox instance on my PC, I enabled Samba and I'm connecting to it via the home network from my Mac. All is fine except that I have some issues deleting some files from inside applications e.g. in Sublime Text 2 when I right click a file in the browser and select delete nothing happens (same in my Git client). To be able to delete files I have to navigate to the folder in Finder (which leaves those nasty .DS_Store files scattered all around) or issue the delete command from the terminal (inconvenient). If you're asking why I'm using VirtualBox for Rails instead of doing the development directly on the Mac it's because the ease of portability. So my question is: are there any network sharing options which I could use to make the Linux instance play nicer with my Mac?

  As a Software Engineer we had a lot of discussion on SE design. Although we sync every document on the development process on Google Doc, mind map just didn’t fit in Google doc yet. The best we can do is to store a copy and share it online. To me, Mind map is an ir-replaceable piece of tools (yet) as agile note taking tools. • Seeking webcam with own IP address

  I am not sure if this is the correct place to post, but I couldn't find anywhere better. I am looking for a webcam/movie cam and this site seems more addressed to still images, but ... I am looking for a small, rugged web-cam which can be hand-held or perhaps head-mounted (failing that I can settle for a tripod mount, but I need portability). It must have its own IP address so that anyone can view its video stream from a web browser. I would prefer 2 way voice communication too. Encryption of data is nice, as is compression (H.264). Maybe also remote control, like causing it to zoom from the browser. Does anyone have any suggestions, even suggestions of somewhere else to look? Thanks very much in advance.

• Super Uninstallers that can be run from a USB Flash Drive?

  Does anyone know of a 'Super Uninstaller' package that will allow you to run it from a USB Flash Drive? I used to have a CD that was a Super Uninstaller utility that would uninstall anything. I can't seem to find it and I'd like to replace it with one that I can run from a flash drive. I'd like the portability to now have to install it on each computer I'm using it on. • How to make the cursor shape dependent on the current Vim mode using iTerm2 on OS X and zsh

  I am using zsh and iTerm2 to edit with Vim. I really love the integration and portability, and because of that I have chosen not to use MacVim. But.... I can't work out how to get my cursor to change from a block to a line when in Vim's insert mode. I've been lead to believe that it's not possible by standard means, but people seem to think that it is possible using zsh. I've done as much Google searching as I can take without an answer, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
