  • Today @ OOW: Identity Management for the SoMoClo world

    - by B Shashikumar
Today at OpenWord, we have a very interesting lineup of Identity Management sessions that discuss how to extend identity management securrley to cloud, mobile and social ecosystems. Here are 3 of the can’t miss identity management sessions today: Identity Management and the Cloud: Security is regularly identified as the #1 barrier to cloud service adoption. Oracle Identity Management is designed to help customers extend and connect core identity services to SaaS applications and systems. This session explores how organizations are using Oracle Identity Management with cloud services and how some customers are offering identity management as a cloud service. Real-time External Authorization for Applications, Middleware and Databases: Externalization of authorization is key to manageability and audit. This session covers enterprise wide authorization solution deployment best practices and real-world examples of using Oracle Entitlements Server—the one-stop standards-compliant authorization solution—for middleware, applications, and data. Delivering Secure WiFi on the Tube as an Olympics Legacy from London 2012: In this session, Virgin Media, the U.K.’s first combined provider of broadband, TV, mobile, and home phone services, shares how it is providing free secure Wi-Fi services to the London Underground, using Oracle Virtual Directory and Oracle Entitlements Server, leveraging back-end legacy systems that were never designed to be externalized. As an Olympics 2012 legacy, the Oracle architecture will form a platform to be consumed by other Virgin Media services such as video on demand. Here is the complete lineup of Identity Management sessions today at OOW.

  • Is it normal needing time to understand code i wrote recently

    - by user1478167
By recently i mean some weeks ago. I am trying to continue a project i left 2 weeks ago and i need time to understand some functions i wrote(not copied from somewhere) and it takes me time. Normally i don't need to because my functions, methods etc are black boxes but when i need to change something it's really hard. Does this mean i write bad code? I am still in school and i am the only who writes/uses the code so i don't have feedback, but i am afraid that if it is difficult for me to understand it, it would be 10 times more difficult for someone else. What should i do? I write a lot of comments but most of the time are useless when reviewing. Do you have any suggestions?

  • How do I overcome paralysis by analysis when coding?

    - by LuxuryMode
When I start a new project, I often times immediately start thinking about the details of implementation. "Where am I gonna put the DataBaseHandler? How should I use it? Should classes that want to use it extend from some Abstract superclass..? Should I an interface? What level of abstraction am I going to use in my class that contains methods for sending requests and parsing data?" I end up stalling for a long time because I want to code for extensibility and reusability. But I feel it almost impossible to get past thinking about how to implement perfectly. And then, if I try to just say "screw it, just get it done!", I hit a brick wall pretty quickly because my code isn't organized, I mixed levels of abstractions, etc. What are some techniques/methods you have for launching into a new project while also setting up a logical/modular structure that will scale well?

  • Adding complexity to remove duplicate code

    - by Phil
    I have several classes that all inherit from a generic base class. The base class contains a collection of several objects of type T. Each child class needs to be able to calculate interpolated values from the collection of objects, but since the child classes use different types, the calculation varies a tiny bit from class to class. So far I have copy/pasted my code from class to class and made minor modifications to each. But now I am trying to remove the duplicated code and replace it with one generic interpolation method in my base class. However that is proving to be very difficult, and all the solutions I have thought of seem way too complex. I am starting to think the DRY principle does not apply as much in this kind of situation, but that sounds like blasphemy. How much complexity is too much when trying to remove code duplication? EDIT: The best solution I can come up with goes something like this: Base Class: protected T GetInterpolated(int frame) { var index = SortedFrames.BinarySearch(frame); if (index >= 0) return Data[index]; index = ~index; if (index == 0) return Data[index]; if (index >= Data.Count) return Data[Data.Count - 1]; return GetInterpolatedItem(frame, Data[index - 1], Data[index]); } protected abstract T GetInterpolatedItem(int frame, T lower, T upper); Child class A: public IGpsCoordinate GetInterpolatedCoord(int frame) { ReadData(); return GetInterpolated(frame); } protected override IGpsCoordinate GetInterpolatedItem(int frame, IGpsCoordinate lower, IGpsCoordinate upper) { double ratio = GetInterpolationRatio(frame, lower.Frame, upper.Frame); var x = GetInterpolatedValue(lower.X, upper.X, ratio); var y = GetInterpolatedValue(lower.Y, upper.Y, ratio); var z = GetInterpolatedValue(lower.Z, upper.Z, ratio); return new GpsCoordinate(frame, x, y, z); } Child class B: public double GetMph(int frame) { ReadData(); return GetInterpolated(frame).MilesPerHour; } protected override ISpeed GetInterpolatedItem(int frame, ISpeed lower, ISpeed upper) { var ratio = GetInterpolationRatio(frame, lower.Frame, upper.Frame); var mph = GetInterpolatedValue(lower.MilesPerHour, upper.MilesPerHour, ratio); return new Speed(frame, mph); }

  • Tips/tricks to manage a new team with new code

    - by Fanatic23
How do you handle yourself in a new team where you are the senior most developer and most others in the team are junior to you by several years. The task ahead of the team is something nobody else including you has accomplished in their career before. Management insists on higher productivity of the whole team, and as senior developer you are responsible. Any tips for coming out trumps in a situation like this? Clearly, the entire team needs time to learn and let's not forget the team's new. However, deadlines are up ahead as well...

  • Is there a distributed project management software like Redmine?

    - by Tobias Kienzler
I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. So, can you recommend me a distributed project management software? If your suggestion is a software that usually runs on a server please include a description of the distribution method (e.g. whether simply putting the data in a git repository would do the trick), and if it's e.g. trac, please mention plugins required to include the features mentioned.

  • Visual Studio code metrics misreporting lines of code

    - by Ian Newson
The code metrics analyser in Visual Studio, as well as the code metrics power tool, report the number of lines of code in the TestMethod method of the following code as 8. At the most, I would expect it to report lines of code as 3. [TestClass] public class UnitTest1 { private void Test(out string str) { str = null; } [TestMethod] public void TestMethod() { var mock = new Mock<UnitTest1>(); string str; mock.Verify(m => m.Test(out str)); } } Can anyone explain why this is the case? Further info After a little more digging I've found that removing the out parameter from the Test method and updating the test code causes LOC to be reported as 2, which I believe is correct. The addition of out causes the jump, so it's not because of braces or attributes. Decompiling the DLL with dotPeek reveals a fair amount of additional code generated because of the out parameter which could be considered 8 LOC, but removing the parameter and decompiling also reveals generated code, which could be considered 5 LOC, so it's not simply a matter of VS counting compiler generated code (which I don't believe it should do anyway).

  • Is there an open source license for this?

    - by Philip
I have written code at home, on my own time and using my own knowledge and equipment, while under no contract or NDA. I want to make this code open source so that I can use it in software I write for an employer, without denying myself the right to use it at home or elsewhere later. I'm not sure if saying it is in the "public domain" would fit this purpose, or if I need to find an open source license. I want anyone to be able to use the code in closed source proprietary software with zero requirements for including a license with the source or binary. And I want to minimize the risk of anyone being sued for using it. (I'm aware that one can never be 100% safe from being sued.) Is there an open source license that fits this purpose? To what extent is what I want to do even possible? I wouldn't mind putting the license in comments in the code files themselves, but that obviously doesn't go with the binary.

  • How to turn on/off code modules?

    - by Safran Ali
I am trying to run multiple sites using single code base and code base consist of the following module (i.e. classes) User module Q & A module Faq module and each class works on MVC pattern i.e. it consist of Entity class Helper class (i.e. static class) View (i.e. pages and controls) and let's say I have 2 sites site1.com and site2.com. And I am trying to achieve following functionality site1.com can have User, Q & A and Faq module up and running site2.com can have User and Q & A module live while Faq module is switched off but it can be turned-on if needed, so my query here is what is the best way to achieve such functionality Do I introduce a flag bit that I check on every page and control belonging to that module? It's more like CMS where you can turn on/off different features. I am trying to get my head around it, please provide me with an example or point out if I am taking the wrong approach.

  • Introducing the First Global Web Experience Management Content Management System

    - by kellsey.ruppel
By Calvin Scharffs, VP of Marketing and Product Development, Lingotek Globalizing online content is more important than ever. The total spending power of online consumers around the world is nearly $50 trillion, a recent Common Sense Advisory report found. Three years ago, enterprises would have to translate content into 37 language to reach 98 percent of Internet users. This year, it takes 48 languages to reach the same amount of users.  For companies seeking to increase global market share, “translate frequently and fast” is the name of the game. Today’s content is dynamic and ever-changing, covering the gamut from social media sites to company forums to press releases. With high-quality translation and localization, enterprises can tailor content to consumers around the world.  Speed and Efficiency in Translation When it comes to the “frequently and fast” part of the equation, enterprises run into problems. Professional service providers provide translated content in files, which company workers then have to manually insert into their CMS. When companies update or edit source documents, they have to hunt down all the translated content and change each document individually.  Lingotek and Oracle have solved the problem by making the Lingotek Collaborative Translation Platform fully integrated and interoperable with Oracle WebCenter Sites Web Experience Management. Lingotek combines best-in-class machine translation solutions, real-time community/crowd translation and professional translation to enable companies to publish globalized content in an efficient and cost-effective manner. WebCenter Sites Web Experience Management simplifies the creation and management of different types of content across multiple channels, including social media.  Globalization Without Interrupting the Workflow The combination of the Lingotek platform with WebCenter Sites ensures that process of authoring, publishing, targeting, optimizing and personalizing global Web content is automated, saving companies the time and effort of manually entering content. Users can seamlessly integrate translation into their WebCenter Sites workflows, optimizing their translation and localization across web, social and mobile channels in multiple languages. The original structure and formatting of all translated content is maintained, saving workers the time and effort involved with inserting the text translation and reformatting.  In addition, Lingotek’s continuous publication model addresses the dynamic nature of content, automatically updating the status of translated documents within the WebCenter Sites Workflow whenever users edit or update source documents. This enables users to sync translations in real time. The translation, localization, updating and publishing of Web Experience Management content happens in a single, uninterrupted workflow.  The net result of Lingotek Inside for Oracle WebCenter Sites Web Experience Management is a system that more than meets the need for frequent and fast global translation. Workflows are accelerated. The globalization of content becomes faster and more streamlined. Enterprises save time, cost and effort in translation project management, and can address the needs of each of their global markets in a timely and cost-effective manner.  About Lingotek Lingotek is an Oracle Gold Partner and is going to be one of the first Oracle Validated Integrator (OVI) partners with WebCenter Sites. Lingotek is also an OVI partner with Oracle WebCenter Content.  Watch a video about how Lingotek Inside for Oracle WebCenter Sites works! Oracle WebCenter will be hosting a webinar, “Hitachi Data Systems Improves Global Web Experiences with Oracle WebCenter," tomorrow, September 13th. To attend the webinar, please register now! • What is a good program for storing "chunks" of commonly used source code

    - by Rob Wiley
I've looked at CodeLocker (poorly styled and relatively unflexible, but free) and Source Code Library (Overzone software - very nicely styled, looks flexible, but very expensive - $80). Ideally, I'm looking for a relatively simple, inexpensive program (not an online website) that I can save text data (source code) with a title and keywords, maybe even a description. It would also have some type of search functionality.

  • Management and Monitoring Tools for Windows Azure

    - by BuckWoody
With such a large platform, Windows Azure has a lot of moving parts. We’ve done our best to keep the interface as simple as possible, while giving you the most control and visibility we can. However, as with most Microsoft products, there are multiple ways to do something – and I’ve always found that to be a good strength. Depending on the situation, I might want a graphical interface, a command-line interface, or just an API so I can incorporate the management into my own tools, or have third-party companies write other tools. While by no means exhaustive, I thought I might put together a quick list of a few tools you can use to manage and monitor Windows Azure components, from our IaaS, SaaS and PaaS offerings. Some of the products focus on one area more than another, but all are available today. I’ll try and maintain this list to keep it current, but make sure you check the date of this post’s update – if it’s more than six months old, it’s most likely out of date. Things move fast in the cloud. The Windows Azure Management Portal The primary tool for managing Windows Azure is our portal – most everything you need is there, from creating new services to querying a database. There are two versions as of this writing – a Silverlight client version, and a newer HTML5 version. The latter is being updated constantly to be in parity with the Silverlight client. There’s a balance in this portal between simplicity and power – we’re following the “less is more” approach, with increasing levels of detail as you work through the portal rather than overwhelming you with a single, long “more is more” page. You can find the Portal here: http://windowsazure.com (then click “Log In” and then “Portal”) Windows Azure Management API You can also use programming tools to either write your own interface, or simply provide management functions directly within your solution. You have two options – you can use the more universal REST API’s, which area bit more complex but work with any system that can write to them, or the more approachable .NET API calls in code. You can find the reference for the API’s here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/ee460799.aspx  All Class Libraries, for each part of Windows Azure: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee393295.aspx  PowerShell Command-lets PowerShell is one of the most powerful scripting languages I’ve used with Windows – and it’s baked into all of our products. When you need to work with multiple servers, scripting is really the only way to go, and the Windows Azure PowerShell Command-Lets allow you to work across most any part of the platform – and can even be used within the services themselves. You can do everything with them from creating a new IaaS, PaaS or SaaS service, to controlling them and even working with security and more. • Why is Clean Code suggesting avoiding protected variables?

    - by Matsemann
Clean Code suggests avoiding protected variables in the "Vertical Distance" section of the "Formatting" chapter: Concepts that are closely related should be kept vertically close to each other. Clearly this rule doesn't work for concepts that belong in separate files. But then closely related concepts should not be separated into different files unless you have a very good reason. Indeed, this is one of the reasons that protected variables should be avoided. What is the reasoning?

  • General questions regarding open-source licensing

    - by ndg
I'm looking to release an open-source iOS software project but I'm very new to the licensing side of the things. While I'm aware that the majority of answers here will not lawyers, I'd appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. With the exception of the following requirements I'm happy for developers to largely do whatever they want with the projects source code. I'm not interested in any copyleft licensing schemes, and while I'd like to encourage attribution in derivative works it is not required. As such, my requirements are as follows: Original source can be distributed and re-distributed (verbatim) both commercially and non-commercially as long as the original copyright information, website link and license is maintained. I wish to retain rights to any of the multi-media distributed as part of the project (sound effects, graphics, logo marks, etc). Such assets will be included to allow other developers to easily execute the project, but cannot be re-distributed in any manner. I wish to retain rights to the applications name and branding. Futher to selecting an applicable license, I have the following questions: The project makes use of a number of third-party libraries (all licensed under variants of the MIT license). I've included individual licenses within the source (and application) and believe I've met all requirements expressed in these licenses, but is there anything else that needs to be done before distributing them as part of my open-source project? Also included in my project is a single proprietary, close-sourced library that's used to power a small part of the application. I'm obviously unable to include this in the source release, but what's the best way of handling this? Should I simply weak-link the project and exclude it entirely from the Git project?

  • Mobile Identity Management at SuperValu

    - by Tanu Sood
While organizations are fast embracing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) culture to attract and retain best talent, improve productivity, bring agility and drive down costs, SuperValu coined their own term (and trend): TYDH – Take Your Device Home. Yes, SuperValu, a Minn based, 18,000 employees strong, food retailer handed out 2,200 iPads to store directors at locations across the country. The motivation behind this reverse trend? Phillip Black, Director of Identity & Access Management at SuperValu, shared the reasoning behind this trend in his talk at last week’s Oracle OpenWorld 2012. "It gives them productivity tools to better manage their store," says Black. Intrigued? Find out more in this recently published news article. • Help me choose an Open-Source license

    - by Spartan-117A
So I've done lots of open-source work. I have released many projects, most of which have fallen under GPL, LGPL, or BSD licensing. Now I have a new project (an implementation library), and I can't find a license that meets my needs (although I believe one may exist, hence this question). This is the list of things I'm looking for in the license. Appropriate credit given for ALL usage or derivative works. No warranty expressed or implied. The library may be freely used in ANY other open-source/free-software product (regardless of license, GPL, BSD, EPL, etc). The library may be used in closed-source/commercial products ONLY WITH WRITTEN PERMISSION. GPL - Useless to me, obviously, as it completely precludes any and all closed-source use, violating requirement (4). BSD/LGPL/MIT - Won't work, because they wouldn't require closed-source developers to get my permission, violating requirement (4). If it wasn't for that, BSD (FreeBSD in particular) would look like a good choice here. EPL/MPL - Won't work either, as the code couldn't be combined with GPL-code, therefore violating requirement (3). Also I'm pretty sure they allow commercial works without asking permission, so they don't meet (4) either. Dual-licensing is an option, but in that case, what combination would hold to all four requirements? Basically, I want BSD minus the commercial use, plus an option to use in commercial/closed-source as long as the developer has my written permission. EDIT: At the moment, thinking something like multiple-licensing under GPL/LGPL plus something else for commercial?

  • Best ways to sell management on the benefits of Open Source Software?

    - by james
I have worked in a few places where the use of Open Source Software in products they produce is strictly forbidden for various reasons, such as: no formal support lack of trust in something perceived as "just downloaded from the internet" How can it be professional if it's not supported, we don't pay for it etc etc I'm looking for the best ways to convince/prove to management that things won't fall apart should we use these tools.

  • Source code (Source repository) for Ubuntu 10.10 [on hold]

    - by user3241533
I was trying to use the following command to install build-dep on Ubuntu 10.10: apt-get build-dep --no-install-recommends linux-image-$(uname -r) but I got the following error: E: You must put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list I have already changed archive.ubuntu.com to old-releases.ubuntu.com for all the repositories in my source list. After including the source repositories, I got a different error: E: Could not open file /var/lib/apt/lists/de.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_source_Sources - open (2: No such file or directory) Any suggested solutions? Thanks!

  • Feedback on TOC Generation Code

    - by vikramjb
    Hi All I wrote a small code to generate ToC or Hierachical Bullets like one sees in a word document. Like the following set 1. 2 3 3.1 3.1.1 4 5 and so on so forth, the code is working but I am not happy with the code I have written, I would appreciate if you guys could shed some light on how I can improve my C# code. You can download the project from Rapidshare Please do let me know if you need more info. I am making this a community wiki. private void frmMain_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.EnableSubTaskButton(); } private void btnNewTask_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.AddNodes(true); } private void AddNodes(bool IsParent) { TreeNode parentNode = tvToC.SelectedNode; string curNumber = "0"; if (parentNode != null) { curNumber = parentNode.Text.ToString(); } curNumber = this.getTOCReference(curNumber, IsParent); TreeNode childNode = new TreeNode(); childNode.Text = curNumber; this.tvToC.ExpandAll(); this.EnableSubTaskButton(); this.tvToC.SelectedNode = childNode; if (IsParent) { if (parentNode == null) { tvToC.Nodes.Add(childNode); } else { if (parentNode.Parent != null) { parentNode.Parent.Nodes.Add(childNode); } else { tvToC.Nodes.Add(childNode); } } } else { parentNode.Nodes.Add(childNode); } } private string getTOCReference(string curNumber, bool IsParent) { int lastnum = 0; int startnum = 0; string firsthalf = null; int dotpos = curNumber.IndexOf('.'); if (dotpos > 0) { if (IsParent) { lastnum = Convert.ToInt32(curNumber.Substring(curNumber.LastIndexOf('.') + 1)); lastnum++; firsthalf = curNumber.Substring(0, curNumber.LastIndexOf('.')); curNumber = firsthalf + "." + Convert.ToInt32(lastnum.ToString()); } else { lastnum++; curNumber = curNumber + "." + Convert.ToInt32(lastnum.ToString()); } } else { if (IsParent) { startnum = Convert.ToInt32(curNumber); startnum++; curNumber = Convert.ToString(startnum); } else { curNumber = curNumber + ".1"; } } return curNumber; } private void btnSubTask_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.AddNodes(false); } private void EnableSubTaskButton() { if (tvToC.Nodes.Count == 0) { btnSubTask.Enabled = false; } else { btnSubTask.Enabled = true; } } private void btnTest1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { this.AddNodes(true); } for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { this.AddNodes(false); } for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { this.AddNodes(true); } }

  • How to know whether to create a general system or to hack a solution

    - by Andy K
I'm new to coding , learning it since last year actually. One of my worst habits is the following: Often I'm trying to create a solution that is too big , too complex and doesn't achieve what needs to be achieved, when a hacky kludge can make the fit. One last example was the following (see paste bin link below) http://pastebin.com/WzR3zsLn After explaining my issue, one nice person at stackoverflow came with this solution instead http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25304170/update-a-field-by-removing-quarter-or-removing-month When should I keep my code simple and when should I create a 'big', general solution? I feel stupid sometimes for building something so big, so awkward, just to solve a simple problem. It did not occur to me that there would be an easier solution. Any tips are welcomed. Best

  • Are too many assertions code smell?

    - by Florents
I've really fallen in love with unit testing and TDD - I am test infected. However, unit testing is used for public methods. Sometimes though I do have to test some assumptions-assertions in private methods too, because some of them are "dangerous" and refactoring can't help further. (I know, testing frameworks allo testing private methods). So, It became a habit of mine that (almost always) the first and the last line of a private method are both assertions. I guess this couldn't be bad (right ??). However, I've noticed that I also tend to use assertions in public methods too (as in the private) just "to be sure". Could this be "testing duplication" since the public method assumpotions are tested from the unit testng framework? Could someone think of too many assertions as a code smell?

  • What are the standard directory layouts for source code?

    - by splattered bits
I'm in the process of proposing a new standard directory layout that will be used across all the projects in our organization. Projects can have compiled source code, setup scripts, build scripts, third-party libraries, database scripts, resources, web services, web sites, etc. This is partly inspired by discovering Maven's standard layout. Are there any other standard layouts that are generally accepted in the industry?
