• Is there a way to transfer windows license to a different machine?

  I purchased a license and used Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit OS for a while. But recently I bought a 64 bit version to take advantage of the larger RAM the machine had and hence reinstalled the OS and activated a new license for the 64-bit version. Now, I am in a need to install the 32 bit version on another machine. How do I go about reactivating a license on another machine? (again the license currently is not used) Am I going to have issues with Microsoft not letting me reactivate that license on a different machine? Thank you.

• Directory service unavailiable, new hardware same settings

  I'm working on a project with 2 sites connected by a VPN. Site 1 has the main server and there is a secondary server at site 2 which I am trying to replace. The current setup works perfectly however I can't for the life of me get the replacement server at site 2 up and running. I'm trying to replace like for like just upgraded hardware. I have installed the OS (all Server 2003 Standard SP2) and used exactly the same settings as the old server. I have setup Active Directory, DNS Server, DHCP Server and WINS Server configured. I have used all the same settings as the old server (except IP address and name). I can access the active directory but I can't do anything; add, edit, delete all returns "the directory service is unavaliable". No-one can login on any of the computers on site 2 and the internet is down. Plugging the old server back in and connecting it to the network rectifies the issue (so both new and old are connected at site 2), everyone can login and the internet is back (curious since the modem connects direct to the switch, and even with the new server online I can connect to the router via IP but not the net). I really don't have much experience but I've been roped into doing this because my company is too cheap to hire a real network admin. Any suggestions of where I can start to troubleshoot this, its driving me crazy and I only have a day before all the users are back on site.

• Windows 7 system CPU bogged by windows services, no explanation

  I'm looking at a laptop for a colleague which is running terribly slow. A quick look showed that the CPU was 100% used by 2-3 SVCHost processes, which off course doesn't tell much since those are just 'cover' processes with services running underneath them. So I fired up process explorer in hopes of finding a shady rogue service which was bogging the system, but to my suprise I found genuine MS Windows processes (or at least damn-good disguised ones) are bogging down the system: dnscache (DNS Client) IKEEXT (IKE and AuthIP IPSec Keyring modules) iphlpsvc (IP Helper) Seen separately, these processes might seem odd to be using a lot of CPU, but taking a step back one can conclude that all three services are quite closely related to networking. I've tried running: netsh int ip reset log.txt which has helped me save bizarre network-related problems in the past, but this didn't help Off course I though about a virus, but both MS Security Essentials as well as malwarebytes (let both run a full scan).

• Using Monit to monitor Resque

  I'm trying to use resque as a job runner for Rails. I've tried this config, and many other ways of demonizing the rescue task (because running rake resque:work leaves the terminal tied to that command). Unfortunately, their example configuration doesn't work for me. Does the configuration look correct? Or is there another way to turn the process into a daemon? • Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Running JBoss 6 with Runit / daemontools or other process supervision framework

  I'm tying to use runit to daemonize JBoss. I use the /opt/jboss-6.1.0.Final/bin/run.sh script to start the server. When I do so from the comandline, JBoss does not detach (which is what we want), and will also shut down when CTRL+C is pressed. In theory a perfect candidate to use runit on. Everything works fine except when I try to get runit to shut down JBoss. When I issue the command sv stop jboss nothing happens. Runit thinks the process is stopped but jboss continues to run normally. I'm not doing anything special with the run script. This is my runit run script: #!/bin/sh exec 2>&1 exec /opt/jboss-6.1.0.Final/bin/run.sh -c standard -b 0.0.0.0 Looking at the jboss_init_redhat.sh script, the start section does mention ./bin/run.sh but the stop section has the following text: JBOSS_CMD_STOP=${JBOSS_CMD_STOP:-"java -classpath $JBOSSCP org.jboss.Shutdown --shutdown"} Any ideas of what I could try?

• window 7 hardware reserved ram

  Hi, I have Windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram and 1152mb is hardware reserved which leaves me with 7039mb of physical memory available as I can see on the task manager. What is the advantage or disadvantage of keeping it this way? If I disable it from the MSCONFIG, the hardware reserved comes down to 1mb. Well, which way I should keep it for best performance in all meanings considering that nowdays, 8gb is still a lot. Could someone explain the easy way please?

  I'm looking for an online task list tool, what I absolutely need is the infinite number of subtask levels, because that's how my mind works. I don't need collaboration. There are a lot of great to do list sites out there, but for some reason most of them have only one subtask level or no subtasks at all. I know about todoist, but its interface doesn't work for me. There must be many more, I guess. Links to desktop tools with the feature are also appreciated as long as they are cross-platform.

• Will an SSD help prevent laptop overheating?

  My laptop has a severe overheating problem, even though it's quite new (< 6 month). It's still regularly overheating to the point where it shuts down. This usually happens while playing games but sometimes while watching videos or using Skype video calls for a long time. I'm already keeping it mid-air on a cooling tray with 2 external coolers, but that doesn't seem to help. The only other thing I can think of is installing an SSD instead of the current HDD. I've read up that they generate less heat then hard drives, but can it actually make a serious difference to the heat level of the laptop? If there are any other suggestions, please feel free to comment. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L650D-11R.

  this works: {=MEDIAN((Table1[MonthFinish]=201012)*(Table1[Days]))} but if I put 201012 into cell A3, this doesn't done work: {=MEDIAN((Table1[MonthFinish]=A3)*(Table1[Days]))} when i do Evaluate Formula on the 2nd one...I see that there are double quotes about the 201012 that was pulled from A3...like so: {=MEDIAN((Table1[MonthFinish]="201012")*(Table1[Days]))} and as such, all the 201012s pulled from the MonthFinsh row come back as FALSE when compared to "201012" (ie, 201012="201012" ) where as they come back as TRUE when I hard code 201012 as it shows up as 201012=201012. how do i get even to not put those quotes around the number?

• how to trace an outlook mail not arriving to its destination when is sent to another domain?

  Hi, I have an domain account configured with Ipower.com. If I use an email client such as Evolution, the mails arrive as expected. However if I use Outlook 2007 (as everybody in this company) the mails only arrive if the destination belongs to the same domain. That means when the destination is a gmail address, for example, the test email falls into a sort of black hole... This is just a simple ipower setup, nothing of Exchange or something like that. What else can I do to isolate and fix this issue? This is driving me nuts because in other email client with the same exact configuration in the same machine, everything works well and I need to fix the thing in Outlook.

  I work for an animal shelter in Upstate New York. We have about 50 machines running XP Pro. They're connected to a Windows network with a domain. About half of these computers are used for nothing more than using two web-based apps -- one to keep track of our animals, the other to process credit cards. Having a full-blown desktop PC seems like overkill for this purpose. The PCs are three-to-five years old, and I'd like to come up with a plan to upgrade the hardware. Our donations are down (not surprising, given the economy), so cost is a big factor. Can people recommend some options? Some sort of thin client, maybe?

I am following this description to use MMC to create a certificate, but I cannot complete the step labeled ' Install or view the certificates under:'. There is nothing unter 'ConsoleRoot' - 'Certificates (Local Computer)' - 'Personal', and when I try to find the certificate I cannot find it. There is another page with nice screenshots, which works until step 9 when I am about to choose the certificate file. I do not know where this file is been created, if at all.   Let's say that I have a need to have a single-name space scale to multi-petabyte object store with a file system-like wrapper. What is currently out there that supports the following: Single name space that can take 1B files. Support for multiple entry points using NFS At least node level replication ( preferably node and file level replication ) Online software upgrades No "magic sauce" on the storage layer The following has been evaluated: Gluster & Lustre - just ick - fundamental lack of understanding of why online upgrades are mandatory. OneFS - we have it. It is smelling more and more like it hides a dead body under the hood. Other than MapR and zfs am I missing anything? P.S. Oh yes, I keep forgetting that the forums are for people to discuss if 2TB drive actually stores 2TB info. May bad. Seriously though - how the heck can "meets the following requirements" can be considered a "debate"? P.P.S. I did not throw an idiotic insult - i pointed out that this is actually an interesting question compared to a conversation about storage capacity of a 2TB hard drive. It is not a question of what works better - it is a question that asks did I miss any of the products that currently exist which fit the criteria where criteria is clearly outline. I got one answer below which included something that I have not looked at in a long time which looks quite a bit grown up compared to the time I briefly look at it before.

• Why does loading a html page opens automaically the printer dialog?

  I have the problem that loading a certain webpage in firefox automatically opens the printer dialog. How is that? Additional information: This only happens on firefox 24.0 on Windows 7. It neither happens on Windows Explorer in Windows 7 nor on Firefox 24 on a Linux system. This also happens when using the firefox safemode, with all add-ons disabled. I cannot post the webpage, since it is not public and restricted. Multiple javascript files are used, but none contains the expression print(). The page content does not contain the phrase 'printer'. It has nothing to do with printing something. This happens sometimes, but not always. I cannot say for sure the URL and/or the content is always identical. I can answer any other questions, like 'Does the page contain this and that...', 'does the URL contain this and that...' Basic question: What could be the reason for the annoying printer pop up?

  Our redmine server is not responding due to connecting it to a large repository. It has not crashed but it's just busy until it checks it out, or whatever redmine does when you set a new repo for a project. What is surprisning is that this operation is not running int the background but blocking the server. Is there any way to have redmine to this in the background next time we connect a large repo? • How can I find a computer on my network that is doing mass mailings?

  I was notified by my isp that one of my machines is sending out spam. This happened about 3 months ago on windows machine running cygwin that was hacked due to an SSH vuln. The hackers setup IIS and SMTP. I cleared out the machine and all the services are disabled so I think that machine is okay I am wondering if there is any other way to identify which machine it could be coming from? The ISP has NO useful information such as source port, destination port, destination IP... nothing. I am running DD-WRT on my router, Windows 7 PC and a Windows XP PC.

  I am changing the password of a truecrypt file container. This takes around 1 minute. • mirror sql server 2008 to AWS instance from our datacenter?

  We are currenlty running on hosted pos system locally and would like to mirror to AWS. We are new to AWS and would like to know the most cost effective way to do this? We have 2 DB and 2 web servers right now in one cabinet in CA. One tape drive, one firewall, one SNA. We are thinking to replicate our system in AWS (using sql server 2008) and just mirror both systems and use a witness server between them to keep the data in sync? The goal is, if CA datacenter goes down, AWS keeps running. User see no downtime. All data is synced. Is anyone doing something similar? Would this be practical to just use AWS in this fashion? • RAID strategy - 8 1TB drives

  I'm setting up a backup storage device- This machine has Windows Server 2008, on a separate boot drive. It has 8x 1TB drives, and uses a hardware RAID card. My question is, which RAID configuration should I go for? Initially, I was going to go with RAID 5 across all 8 drives, however members on serverFault have advised against it. I was just wondering why? Some people have suggested 2 lots of RAID 5 configuration on 4 of the drives, then striping them... I want to maximise the storage space, as this is a backup unit - will store SQL backups, Acronis Images, files, etc... It won't be for public access, so the I/O won't be that high I wouldn't think.
