• Remote desktop fails with user denied until client reboot

  Sometimes (but often enough to anoy) Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to a server (2008 R2 but maybe also 2003) and claims that "The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login." The user is always authorized for remote login and the connection works from other clients. (Although this is the very same message that appears when a user really isn't autorized for remote login.) The problem always goes away after a client restart. The client is always Windows 7 but I have no (other) reason to assume that it only affects Windows 7 clients. Any idea what causes this?

• Outlook Replies with Inline Comments

  I have a user who uses Word as his e-mail editor. Often when replying to an e-mail, he'll insert his comments into the body of the original e-mail. Since he is using Word as the editor, these show as [User Name] Comment Text in a contrasting color. However, some users see the comments in their Outlook, and others do not. I've tried Selecting/DeSelecting Word as the e-mail editor on the recipients, and it does not seem to make a difference. We are using Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 clients along with a few Entourage Clients. There does not seem to be a pattern related to which client is used, but Entourage seems to be more likely to have the problem. TIA, Bill

• Restrict Applications access to Device

  I have a PC that has the ability to handle running multiple game clients at once (specifically Tera Online). What I'd like to do is assign and/or restrict each clients access to a device (Gamepad) so that the actions from each device only effects the client I specify. After doing some research with Python's PyGame, I can see that a Gamepad essentially works like a Keyboard does by sending global key events to the entire system, and then the application reading those events. Question is, how can I make it not global? ONly have one application read one controller? Any help is appreciated!

  Need help according to scenario given: Client end PCs: 400 + Network : Server 1 (Linux) : 192.168.2.0/24 (For Application, Internet not working) GW: 192.168.2.1 Clients: 192.168.2.1 - 254 Server 2 (Linux) : 192.168.3.0/24 (For Internet users) GW: 192.168.3.1 Clients: 192.168.3.2 - 254 Server 2 is connected to DSL Broadband. Server 1 and Server 2 both are on same physical network i.e. Same switches. Current issue: i have to deploy a file and print server but this server will be accessed by both (192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x) one same workgroup. as both subnets are on same switched network. Limitations: Currently there is no hardware routers and firewall. Need to complete this task with Linux / Windows / AD. Tested / Worked so far: Configured one PC with two NIC's With the IPS: NIC 1 : 192.168.3.2 GW: 192.168.3.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 NIC 2 : 192.168.2.2 GW: Empty Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Kindly provide any solution what should i do to get sharing enable on both Subnets. • Generating and collaborating on network map diagrams?

  I have to turn out some network topology maps for very large networks. I'd like the format for the maps to be something other people can also edit and contribute to regardless of what software I'm using on my Mac to build them. I don't mind spending money on my end for software, but I can't require that my clients spend any money. I also can't promise my clients are also using OS X -- they could be running Linux or Windows. Is there a best software application on OS X for producing maps that I can share with other, non-OS X, users? Is there a best format for sharing topology maps that I should use when exporting the maps to disk?

• Hosts file in Apache keep changing for OS Linux Redhat [on hold]

  I have installed Apache server. Two clients ex client_1 and client_2. The operation that we are performing on client_1 reflecting to client_2. We have etc/hosts file in our software install location which is keep on changing for client_2 with client_1 IP address. If I correct the entries in hosts file to client_2 also in the next few minuets it is changing automatically to the client_1(if we start the client_1 service). Please explain the use of hosts file and where and when it will change by Apache service. • How can I know if a VM is used or not?

  I am running eSXI 4.1. In my main datastore I have plenty of folders, some of them has logical names, while the others don't, they hold BASE configurations/images of clients that I duplicate and activate. I only have a fraction of the actual clients loaded and running on the server. How can I know, but looking in the datastore folder, if the VM is in the inventory or not? If I right click on the vmx file, I can add it to the inventory - EVEN if the same client/folder is already active.

• Remote access and local access same hostname

  Hi serverfault, I have a server in a clients network, seperated from theirs with a router/firewall, the intention is to have this server available through one hostname (example.com) My idea is to have (at least) a DNS server in the outside, to have outside (out of the clients' network) access the internal server. The problem would at that point be the internal client (PC A) My question: What would I have to do to make something like this work? Is it even possible or already done? The goal is to not have to change anything on either PC A or PC B, while both should access the same "internal server" while surfing to "example.com" Perhaps adding logic to the DNS server would work (Detect the external IP of internal client [PC A] is the same as the IP for example.com - Give the local IP as reply?) • What is needed for 'Previous Versions' to be visible on the client OS?

  I have servers with Shadow Copies enabled taking snapshots a couple times a day. From the server, if you look at the local devices you can see the Previous Versions being populated reliably. But from remote clients, the ability for an end-user to see the Previous Versions seems to be very hit-or-miss. For the sake of this question you can assume that all my clients are Windows 7 and the Servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there an exhaustive list of everything that is required for end user to see Previous Versions? Are their any requirements for a certain level of share or filesystem permissions, other then read access? Does something need to be open on the firewall, other then what is already in-place for normal Windows networking?

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? • Writing to network share failed

  I have outlook files stored on a network share and accessed by clients directly. Outlook is version 2003, clients windows XP and server is 2003. The files are quite big at around 3GB. One of the common problem that happens is that I get 'delayed write failed' and this happens only on these PST files. When this happens I have to run scanpst.exe to fix the PST file. I did not find any entries in even logs that I could relate to the issue. What would you suggest to change to fix the issue or where to look to further diagnose it? EDIT: No loss on ping and ping times within normal for LAN.

• How can I get the current OU with a PowerShell login script?

  I am setting up a Terminal Server 2008 which will be used by different client organisations, each with multiple individual user accounts. I would like each client organisation to have a drive mapped to \server\clients\ Their OU name is also their client name, so I would like to be able to find their current OU and then use it for the mapping command. The OUs are hierarchicals, so it is the bottom-most OU name I need. Example OU: Dedicated Clients\AjaxCorp Should get a drive mapped to \\server1\shares\AjaxCorp Any suggestions on how I can get the OU? I am sure it must be easy, I just haven't figured it out... I did find information about how to do this with VB script, but as it is a whole new environment I thought it would be nice to use PowerShell instead.

Recently we got most of emails bounced back and some bounces describes a reason as greylisting, others - just general failure. It is ruining our business because clients are calling that they didn't get the emails with confirmation and invoices. How to get off greylisting, and to not be greylisted? What actions should we do? • Ubuntu 12.04 Transparent proxy gateway

  i have a ubuntu server which i want to use as a transparent proxy, (i have no issue setting up squid, just the iptables. The server only has one network interface. The server sits on the same subnet as the router which is the current gateway to the internet for clients, i want to simply set the gateway on the clients pointing at the transparent proxy which in turn forwards the requests to the router and off to the internet. • Is Samba "remote browse sync" possible across OpenVPN tunnel?

  I'm connecting 2 TomatoUSB (Shibby build on WNR3500L v2) routers with an OpenVPN routed connection: ----------------------- ----------------------- | Router 1, subnet 20 | <--tunnel--> | Router 2, subnet 21 | ----------------------- ----------------------- Router 1 is the OpenVPN server and Router 2 is a client. Clients attached to the routers on both subnets can ping clients on the other subnet, so the tunnel and routing works. I've enabled file sharing on both, in order to get their Samba WINS servers running. Is it possible to get name resolution across the tunnel? I've tried remote browse sync = 192.168.21.1 in /etc/smb.conf on the server side, to no avail. Also tried using the IP adress that the client gets from the OpenVPN address pool (usually 10.8.0.something), but still no joy.

• Adding a W2008 Authenticating Server to existing W2003 Domain?

  I have an existing W2003 Domain, simple setup with one DC and a SQL Server (approx 100 users). There are issues with Windows 7 Clients and login scripts and we're now seeing much greater numbers of Windows 7 users turning up as they upgrade their PC/Laptops. What I want to do, is add another Server with W2008 on it, and authenticate the Windows 7 Clients - but leave the W2003 server running as is - to prevent disruption to the network and the existing WinXP users. Is it possible? Any advice as to how do this, without major disruption to the W2003 network?

• Multicast File copy with Unicast responses

  I'm trying to do some multicast big file copies over to remote clients on the other side of a satellite link. The idea is to minimize the amount of traffic going up to the satellite. I tried using uftp without luck. The problem is that, even though we can reach clients via multicast from our central Hub, they aren't able to respond to a multicast address (it's not supported by the return link). As uftp needs to respond to a multicast address in order to report any missing packets I'm out of luck. So does anyone have any recommendations or alternatives I can use to do the trasfers? Any tip or pointer would be appreciated.

• Constant prompts for credentials from one Mac Outlook 2011 client

  The majority of my Exchange users are all on Windows 7 and have no issues (at least using Outlook...) but a subset of the executives are ardent Mac users running Outlook 2011 for OS X. One of these clients is prompted every 5-10 minutes for credentials. Ticking the checkbox to remember credentials does not fix the situation. Mac version is 10.7.2. I have already removed and rebuilt the EWS virtual directory on my Client Access server. Outlook anywhere is set to NTLM authentication. None of the Microsoft clients are experiencing this issue. What else can I do to make this issue go away?

• Restart an in-use NFS server without interruption (within timeout)

  I have a bunch of compute clients working on jobs, saving output data to a NAS machine. All machines are centos 6.2. They mount it via automount NFS, with a timeout of 1200 (default config). The NAS machine needs to be restarted. If I can restart the machine within that 1200s (20 minute) window, will the clients just block on IO until it comes back up? A minor interruption (pause) in service is ok, as long as it doesn't cause the running processes to error out. If necessary I could loop through and SIGSTOP all job processes, restart and resume them -- I just don't want to break the open file handles. How can I run a restart like this without killing processes with open files?

• OpenVPN on port 53

  I have an openvpn server setup on UDP port 53 on a public IP. All the connecting clients gets pushed external DNS servers such as 8.8.8.8 and opendns. Sometimes the resolution stops working on the connected vpn clients and I get strange packets in the openvpn log. Now my question is why is that? When a VPN client, let's say 192.168.1.22 does a DNS query that query should go to 8.8.8.8:53 and then an UDP response packet should be sent back to 192.168.1.22 on a high UDP port. Any ideas? • Personally identifiable information (PII) on shared web hosting

  Hey folks, I am providing web hosting services (shared and dedicated) and have had one of my shared hosting clients mention needing an SSL cert for their site where they are collecting insurance quotes in a form, including names and social security numbers. My privacy sense is tingling, and I'm pretty sure it's not legal (in the US) to do this on a shared system, but can't find anything to support my thoughts outside of PCI-DSS, but the customer isn't processing payments through the site so I'm not sure if that applies. I'm reading lots of policy documents where people advise to minimize and manage the PII footprint internally, but as the host I don't want to put all of my customer's clients at possible risk. I'm not looking here for legal advice necessarily, but perhaps someone in a similar position to mine can provide some rule of thumb or point me in the right direction.

• Saving Proxy Settings from different networks

  I go to different clients and they all have their networks with different proxy settings. So I'm always having to change the proxy settings and saving the info in a notebook, and it becomes a pain after a while. So, any good way to save all those proxies and have them recognize the network I'm on and load up? Currently I maintain two: one in IE for clients, and none in Firefox for when I'm at home. And I think the last network I was on asked me to save the proxy and I think it went to system settings. But I don't know much about networking.

• Windows 8.1 keeps prompting for Network Share Credentials after every log on or restart

  I have a Network drive Shared in a Workgroup with 3 clients. Two clients with Windows 7 have persistent connections to the Share. No issues with those two. My windows 8.1 client keeps prompting for credentials at every restart / log on. I spent hours looking around for a solution: I have stored cred in cred manager, and tried every possible combination (WORKGROUP\user , COMPUTERNAME\user, user, .. and so on). I have changed NT and NTLM negotiation in policy manager. I've compared the settings under GPO network security with a working win 7 computer, everything is pretty much the same. -I've captured Wireshark to see SMB negotiation process, honestly I see the messages flowing around, and the share sending AUTH DENIED.. which means is how the 8.1 client formats the request.... that makes the share reject it.. Now I still don't really know why. Any ideas would be appreciated.

• Introducing a Windows Domain Controller into an all mac-client network

  A company is about to hire me to be their I.T. Admin. (They currently have no Admin). In the interview, they stated one of the things they want me to do is put in a MS Domain Controller. The thing is, they are a graphic design company with about 100 Mac Clients and maybe 5 Windows Clients. So other than login-credentials and network shares, what is the benefit of this? Should I just tell them to use the OSX equivalent of AD? How hard is it to learn whatever OSX's AD is?
