• which service to use among Amazon's free tier for Java app

  this is the first time I am going to host a java app, Amazon offers a free tier which provides free usage for one year, and I am going to use it. But there are so many services (S3, EC2, etc etc), I cant figure out which service is for web hosting, which service is for what use, their docs is so huge, I am confused, what to read. can anybody write some good points, about which service to use specifically for Java apps, how much I will be charged, and they ask for credit/debit card credential for signup, does it mean they will debit me even in the free period?

• Video player with good subtitle rendering

  Is there any way to improve the subtitle rendering capabilities of Totem? The subtitles positioning seems to be hard-coded in it and even though the style is user-customizable, it does not confirm to the formatting in subtitle data. In some scenes where writings appear, the subtitles are supposed to appear next to those along with what is being said at that moment. However, on those scenes the translations of text onscreen appears on the default subtitle area with nothing about the things being said. The correct rendering are according to the open-source Windows video player, Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. There are no Linux port as far as I'm aware. If VLC's subtitle support is the same as in Windows, it won't work for me, period. Please suggest anyway to improve subtitle rendering in Totem, other video players, or a way to port MPC-HC.

• Smooth vector based jump

  I started working on Wolfire's mathematics tutorials. I got the jumping working well using a step by step system, where you press a button and the cube moves to the next point on the jumping curve. Then I tried making the jumping happen during a set time period e.g the jump starts and lands within 1.5 seconds. I tried the same system I used for the step by step implementation, but it happens instantly. After some googling I found that Time.deltatime should be used, but I could not figure how. Below is my current jumping code, which makes the jump happen instantly. while (transform.position.y > 0) { modifiedJumperVelocity -= jumperDrag; transform.position += new Vector3(modifiedJumperVelocity.x, modifiedJumperVelocity.y, 0); } Where modifiedJumperVelocity is starting vector minus the jumper drag. • How can I delay dropbox from starting, but not disable it?

  When I log into my user account on Ubuntu 10.10, there is a unsatisfying delay before my system becomes usable. Even launching a terminal, I have to wait a few seconds before the bash prompt appears. During this start-up period, the top process seems to be dropbox. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly (functionality is still fine as far as I can see), but I do know it really doesn't need to be doing it while I'm waiting for desktop to appear. (This is the standard Ubuntu with Gnome desktop, by the way.) What I would like to do is to be able to have a static or even dependency-based delay for dropbox to start. It would be nice if it waited for, e.g., 10 minutes, or for my browser tabs to load and a typing pause. Then it could churn away on file status or cache-chewing, and I would be happy. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

  Possible Duplicate: How do I set a price for advertising on my website? I recently launched a new developer website, Black Belt Coder. The site is only seeing about 150 visitors per day but, given that it's only been live two months, I feel I'm off to a good start. I'd like to start monetizing the site as soon as possible but consider AdSense and other programs largely a waste of time. I'd like to deal directly with the advertisers but have no idea what to charge. Are there any guidelines for determining advertising rates based on visitors or page views? I don't expect to do PPC. I want to charge a the time period for banner ads, knowing that advertisers will be keeping an eye on the number of clicks.

• Help Desk Software with user groups and temporary ban function?

  Does anyone know any Help Desk Software which allow you to create user groups / to mark/categorize specific users in some way / and to to ban specific users/e-mails (not user groups) for a specific period of time? Kayako? OTRS? simpledesk?... Kayako looks to be very functional but not sure if it has this option. zendesk is also very functional but a SaaS service not a downloadable software. Since the functions that I am saying are very common in forum software, maybe simpledesk could do it since it is based in SMF. Any ideas?

My team currently uses ad hoc methods of handing off documentations, such as diagrams, API references, etc. Is there a open source solution (or even proprietary one) that enables us to manage: Infrastructure/architecture/software diagrams API documentation Directory structures/file structures Overall documentation summaries in one place? • How to get average network load instead of instant

  Welcome, I use conky to see network load statistics with sampling every 8 seconds in order to get somewhat more smooth history chart. Unfortunately, all values i get are not average for this 8 second period, but they are sampled from much smaller time span, so charts are the same choppy, as if they were sampled from 1 second or less. Is there any way to get conky (or at least System Monitor) display system properties averaged over specified amount of time, just like Windows' task manager does? I would like to have conky display hard drive usage from iostat, but there will be little use if it, if conky reports instant values not averaged over time.

• mitigating lost emails when switching provider

  were about to change to gmail from a webmail provided by our hosting provider, i understand changing the mx records and all. But my main worry was if there would be any emails that would fall through the gaps of the two systems during change over. Im not familiar with the ins and outs of how the mx record works, is it like a dns record change, ie. it needs to propagate ? If thats the case would there be a period were its left my current email provider but not switched to the new gmail account ? Thus allowing emails not be delivered or worse lost ?

• Rails Launcy - open Chromium

  I'm developing in rails on my computer. I'm just going along with what tutorials say, and I simply cannot find anything about how to use launchy during development on the Internet .. period. There are two problems: I'd like launchy to open Chromium (it opens Firefox). Chromium is set as my default browser. I save files constantly, and launchy will run each time, which is terrible. Is there any way to only get it to run when you actually want? This also applies to guard, but it's not nearly as annoying with guard.

• Keeping rackspace vserver alive

  It appears to me that rackspace somehow freezes cloud VMs after some idle time. This means the first page request to a php page takes much longer to respond than the subsequent requests. This is in some cases good, in other cases not acceptable. I am actually querying a machine with wget from a different host now to keep it "alive". But I wonder what frequency would be necessary. Does anyone know the time period after which they send a VM to "sleep"? I guess it would be some minutes. EDIT: There is absolutely no caching involved on the php site. It just recently moved from another vhost and there was never such latency on the first request.

  I've just installed UBUNTU 12.04 for curiosity purposes. I'm a gamer and I wanted to install Brute force Save data on my comp. • HP mini 5102 Ethernet does not work after suspend on Lubuntu 12.10

  Ethernet works fine after system is rebooted The onboard card is seen in 'lspci' as: 43:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Yukon Optima 88E8059 [PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller with AVB] (rev 11) After system being suspended the sky2 driver loads but does not enable the NIC. I have noticed that it happens when PC is left suspended for longer period of time (few houres) Trying to reproduce it I have tried to load the sky2 driver with 'modprobe sky2'. Unfortunately typing 'ifconfig -a' for the onboard ethernet adapter does not list the driver once the sky2 driver is loaded. I have searched internet and I found some information about a bug in kernel. Hovewer it was reported in 2010 so I hope it has been fixed.   I try to unzip a zip file, but got an error: $ unzip COCR2_100.zip Archive: COCR2_100.zip End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. note: COCR2_100.zip may be a plain executable, not an archive unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of COCR2_100.zip or COCR2_100.zip.zip, and cannot find COCR2_100.zip.ZIP, period. I googled but didn't find a solution. I was wondering why it is and how I should fix it? Thanks! The zip file can be downloaded from COCR2_100. • Where can I safetly search domain whois without worrying about the search engine parking on the domain immediately after the search?

  There are a lot of companies that provide domain whois but I've heard of a lot of people who had bad experiences where the domain was bought soon after the whois search and the price was increased dramatically. Where can I gain access to a domain whois where I don't have to worry about that happening? Update: Apparently, the official name for this practice is called Domain Front Running and some sites go as far as to create explicit policies stating that they don't do it. This is where a domain registrar or an intermediary (like a domain lookup site) mines the searches for possibly attractive domains and then either sells the data to a third-party, or goes ahead and registers the name themselves ahead of you. In one case a registrar took advantage of what's known as the "grace period" and registered every single domain users looked up through them and held on to them for 5 days before releasing them back into the pool at no cost to themselves. • Store VOD wmi data in a database directly or use CQRS?

  I need to collect Video on demand bandwidth usage every few minutes (or maybe ever few seconds) and store this in a database so users can produce graphs on bandwidth usage over a period of time (few hours, days, weeks or even possibly months). So the sort of data that will be stored will be the number of users watching videos, current server bandwidth (Mb/s), multicast bit rate etc. I am wondering whether using CQRS would be a good approach with Event sourcing as I can then rebuild my objects to create different projections (I.e. different graphs/reports etc) but then again it seems like I am introducing complexity which might not be needed. Or would it be best to just put the data directly in a database (currently using PostGres) directly and query off that? Having thought about it, my table is a form of audit log anyway, so I don't think I need event sourcing at all. Any thoughts?

  E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support deliverables for E-Business Suite 12.1. Please refer to the Lifetime Support section of oracle.com for further information regarding Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy for Applications.
