  • Writing a simple incrementing counter in rails

    For every Card, I would like to attach a special number to them that increments by one. I assume I can do this all in the controller. def create @card = Card.new(params[:card]) @card.SpecNum = @card.SpecNum ++ ... end Or. I can be blatantly retarded. And maybe the best bet is to add an auto-incremement table to mysql. The problem is the number has to start at a specific number, 1020. Any ideas?

Right now I'm using two sessions (sessions with different names), one for the admin and one for the frontend. Is it possible to write in the first session, close it and then open a new session?   • Program occasionally stuck when writing to ldap

    hey guys, I have 2 databases for my program : mysql and ldap. All transactions happen to mysql, but i need ldap to connect to ip-phones. There's an option to synchronise the ldap database. So when the ldap is brand new, and mysql contains like 200+ records, it may want to update. But when inserting all those entries, it "freezes". It never happens at the same record, it's very random. Sometimes after 70 records, sometimes at 200 the program quits inserting, and gets stuck. This is very annoying. My best guess is that ldap can't handle that much inserts in a short time. Code isn't the problem, as it is a random problem. Does this seem familiar to somebody or is it just me? Thanks in advance.

  • Writing an audio player in C#

    Hi, I have a pretty cool idea for a very special media player. I like to think about this project as a mini-startup, since I don't yet know if my idea is practical. Anyways, before implementing my idea, I first need to be able to implement a simple audio player. My preferred language for this project is C#, simply because it's so easy to use, but any other object oriented language would be fine too I guess. I started out with no knowledge whatsoever about audio. My main goals right now are: Being able to play audio files - as many formats as possible (sort of a VLC type player, but only audio for now). Being able to analyze audio files - as in, reading frequency, amplitude, volume, and other information about the audio. I think maybe a good idea here is to be able to analyze one file format (PCM?), and then temporarily converting any file I want to analyze to that format. This is in order to later implement a mechanism that compares songs and identifies similar songs to recommend to the user (this feature isn't part of my idea, but I figured since it exists in many players nowadays, I need to have it too if I want be able to compete with them). BTW - I currently don't have any knowledge about audio/wavelengths/frequencies and such, so I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction about this analyzation feature. Maybe in the future I'd expand to playing video files as well, but for now I'm concentrating on audio. After searching the Internet for a while, I've come across LAME. Problem is, it's not C#, and I'm not sure how to use it. I know there is something called "Interoperability", that is supposed to let me work with native DLL files through C#.   • Stop CDATA tags from being output-escaped when writing to XML in C#

    We're creating a system outputting some data to an XML schema. Some of the fields in this schema need their formatting preserved, as it will be parsed by the end system into potentially a Word doc layout. To do this we're using <![CDATA[Some formatted text]]> tags inside of the App.Config file, then putting that into an appropriate property field in a xsd.exe generated class from our schema. Ideally the formatting wouldn't be out problem, but unfortunately thats just how the system is going. The App.Config section looks as follows: <header> <![CDATA[Some sample formatted data]]> </header> The data assignment looks as follows: HeaderSection header = ConfigurationManager.GetSection("header") as HeaderSection; report.header = "<[CDATA[" + header.Header + "]]>"; Finally, the Xml output is handled as follows: xs = new XmlSerializer(typeof(report)); fs = new FileStream (reportLocation, FileMode.Create); xs.Serialize(fs, report); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); This should in theory produce in the final Xml a section that has information with CDATA tags around it. However, the angled brackets are being converted into &lt; and &gt; I've looked at ways of disabling Outout Escaping, but so far can only find references to XSLT sheets. I've also tried @"<[CDATA[" with the strings, but again no luck. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hello, I'm trying to export data to a csv file, as there are chinese characters in the data i had to use unicode.. but after adding the preamble for unicode, the commas are not recognized as delimiters and all data are now written to the first column.     I have this code in my gwt client side: String out = result.getConsoleOutput().replaceAll("\n", "<br/>"); transOut.getElement().setInnerText(out); Basically what comes out of consoleoutput() is text from a telnet client and transOut is a HTMLPanel in a UiBinder. I want it to show up pretty so I tried to change all the \n to html , but when it shows up in firefox it looks like this on screen blah blahblah blah.... I am guessing gwt escapes the text somewhere how can I get it to write the real tag.

I log the results to a text file on the server, but I would like to strip out any line breaks a user would put in the textarea, as well as any commas that would interfere with importing the comma-delimited log text file into Excel or something for later use. I think this has to do with regex, but I'm no expert and could use some help. Or maybe there is an easy PHP function that will do it?

    I have a SL4 application that uses EF4 & RIA Services. DB is SQL 2008. All is working well. Now I want to put the Database and web services on one domain (A.com) with the web service exposing the same methods available in my working project. (one listed at top of message) Then put a Silverlight application (same one as above) on domain(B.com) and call the web services on A.com. I thought I had a fair understanding of RIA Services. Enough to get the above application working. Now when I say "working" I do mean on my local dev machine. I have yet to deployed as SL4 & .NET 4 application to my hosting site. But I don't think I understand it well enough. I normally create a new business app, add EF then create the RIA DomainService. Add any [Includes] I need, modify my linq queries and run application. And it works. Now I need to break off my data layer and put it on another hosting site (A.com) And put my UI and business logic on another hosting site (B.com) I think I need to do the following : On the Database & web service site: domain(A.com) create application, create EF4, create RIA Services and deploy. At this time, are the methods exposed available as a "WEB SERVICE" to other applications calling by http:// a.com/serviceName.svc address? I think I need to do the following : On the application site : domain(B.com) create a business application (later will need authentication and navigation). How can I create an EF when I don't have access to the database? (I know I do have access but I want know what happens here when I do not have access to the database, but only data provided by a web service) If I can not create an EF how do I create my RIA Service? I hope any one who takes time to help me understands what I'm asking. Sorry so long.

And, would I have to create these "mapped" types for all the types in these return types/parameter type hierarchies, all the way down until I get to all primitives?     I am having a problem with one of my team members output. He seems to be always 'busy' yet I am unable to see exactly what code he has done and he seems be delivering very little and it seems to take a long time to do so. I'd like to investigate further using TFS and was wondering if there is any functionality in TFS that shows what has been written by an individual or similar? Just to clarify I am NOT spying I am trying to resolve situation. This is only a starting point. I un derstand that quantity of code does not equate to best programmer thanks for any answers

  • Expert system for writing programs?

    I am brainstorming an idea of developing a high level software to manipulate matrix algebra equations, tensor manipulations to be exact, to produce optimized C++ code using several criteria such as sizes of dimensions, available memory on the system, etc. Something which is similar in spirit to tensor contraction engine, TCE, but specifically oriented towards producing optimized rather than general code. The end result desired is software which is expert in producing parallel program in my domain. Does this sort of development fall on the category of expert systems? What other projects out there work in the same area of producing code given the constraints?
