• Upgrade to 12.04, nothing in dash, no date&time

  I've upgraded from ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 lts, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search result whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date&time. No date&time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date&time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete: so I had to reboot the computer and get unity as before, still no date&time and privacy. • What are the system requirements for each flavor of Ubuntu Desktop?

  I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Desktop, but I don't know what flavor is the better for my system. What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements? What kind of CPU? How much memory? Should I have Hardware Acceleration? What flavor should I use? This is an attempt of a canonical answer. My answers have the "official minimal requirements", the recommended are a mix of official sources and opinion based (along with the answer it's told the source). You can comment or edit if you feel that the information is obsolete or incomplete. Is a good rule of thumb that any system capable to run Windows Vista, 7, 8 x86 OS X will almost always be a lot faster with any Ubuntu flavor even if they are lower-spec than described below.

  I have an environment variable that I've set in ~/.profile with the following line: export APPDIR=/path/to/dir When I log in and load up a terminal, I can verify that the variable is set: $ printenv APPDIR /path/to/dir I'm trying to access this variable from within a Qt application: QString appdir = getenv("APPDIR"); QTWARNING("dir: |" + appdir + "|"); The warning window that pops up shows me: dir: || What is going on here? Am I misunderstanding about how environment variables work in Ubuntu? This is with a C++/Qt App on Ubuntu 11.10 x86.

• Linux Programmer moving to Windows

  I am a fairly proficient Linux programmer. I have been coding in Linux for 4 years, for both personal reasons and for profit. During those 4 years I have not even owned a computer running the Windows operating system. I am looking to expand my horizons into Windows programming, but am finding myself overwhelmed with the lack of what I perceive to be standardization. I feel as though different compilers follow different conventions, and all of the worthwhile IDEs cost money. Whats worse is that so many of the Tutorials are just terrible. If anyone else has taken the switch from Linux to Windows programming, what was the most helpful. What are the most straightforward IDEs and tutorials for using the API. I am looking to do mainly C and C++ development, along with some x86. I have found MASM primarily suits my needs for the latter.

• Vmware 3D Acceleration Ubuntu 14.04

  I have installed Vmware Player 6.0.3 build-1895310. The problem I have is that when I run a Windows 7 Vm, it says that 3D support was disabled. (I can't read the exact report atm because it has a chance of crashing my machine.) I have the 3D support box enabled. Here is my graphics card: Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE2. Can anyone tell me to install drivers or something? I can't find mine anywhere!

• What's the difference or purpose of a file format like ELF when flat binaries take up less space and can do the same thing?

  I will give a better description now. In Linux driver development you need to follow a specification using an ELF file format as a finalized executable, i.e., that right there is not flat, it has headers, entry fields, and is basically carrying more weight than just a flat binary with opcodes. What is the purpose or in-depth difference of a Linux ELF file for a driver to interact with the video hardware, and, say, a bare, flat x86 16-bit binary I write that makes use of emulated graphics mode on a graphics card and writes to memory(besides the fact that the Linux driver probably is specific to making full use of the hardware and not just the emulated, backwards compatible memory accessing scheme). To sum it up, what is a difference or purpose of a binary like ELF with different headers and settings and just a flat binary with the necessary opcodes/instructions/data to do the same thing, just without any specific format? Example: Windows uses PE, Mac uses Mach-O/PEF, Linux uses ELF/FATELF, Unix uses COFF. What do any of them really mean or designate if you can just go flat, especially with a device driver which is system software.

  We released Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 recently. OSC offers both High Availability (HA) and also Scalable Services capabilities. HA delivers automatic restart of software on the same cluster node and/or automatic failover from a failed node to a working cluster node. Software and support is available for both x86 and SPARC systems. The Scalable Services features manage multiple cluster nodes all providing a load-balanced service such as web servers or app serves. OSC 4.1 includes the ability to recover services from software failures, failure of hardware components such as DIMMs, CPUs, and I/O cards, a global file system, rolling upgrades, and much more. • Bumblebee optirun appears to depend on Intel

  I have a Lenovo T420 with Intel and Nvidia graphics. On upgrade to Ubuntu Saucy, I had to purge and reinstall bumblebee-nvidia to get beyond optirun failing to find a GPU driver. Now, "optirun glxgears" and "optirun sol" succeed, but optirun fails on 2 Virtual Life viewers that it supported in the past, Cool VL (CoolVLViewer-1.26.8.34-Linux-x86) and Imprudence (Imprudence 1.4.0 beta2). In both cases, the error output is huge, but it starts with libGL error: failed to load driver: i965 and libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast From the little I can discover, i965 is an Intel graphics driver, which should not be invoked at all. I haven't found any information about swrast. I suspect that some of the X configuration associated with Bumblebee has some Intel dependence that is invoked on certain library calls, but not others. I haven't discovered any definite information on this line. The Cool VL Viewer runs without optirun, but complains about the insufficiency of the Intel graphics.

• Why was Tannenbaum wrong in the Tannenbaum-Torvalds debates?

  I was recently assigned reading from the Tannenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tannenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a 1 year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tannenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?

As in previous questions asked as per the link mentioned below: Is it possible to have a different background for each workspace? Having problems with following steps in Ubuntu 12.04. gconf-editor doesn't have an option of show desktop in preferences in nautilus. How to go on about setting my workspaces? Have Ubuntu 12.04 with x86-64 bit architecture(if that is of any help) and working with unity. Is there in any way of customizing unity launcher also for different workspaces? Thanks in advance.
