  • Remove Kernel Lock from Unmounted Mass Storage USB Device from the Command Line in Linux

    I've searched high and low, and can't figure this one out. I have a older Olympus Camera (2001 or so). When I plug in the USB connection, I get the following log output: $ dmesg | grep sd [20047.625076] sd 21:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg7 type 0 [20047.627922] sd 21:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI removable disk Secondly, the drive is not mounted in the FS, but when I run gphoto2 I get the following error: $ gphoto2 --list-config *** Error *** An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock the device'): Camera is already in use. *** Error (-60: 'Could not lock the device') *** What command will unmount the drive. For example in Nautilus, I can right click and select "Safely Remove Device". After doing that, the /dev/sg7 and /dev/sdg devices are removed.   • Can’t connect to SQL Server 2008 - looks like Shared Memory problem

    I am unable to connect to my local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express using SQL Server Management Studio. I believe the problem is related to a change I made to the connection protocols. Before the error occurred, I had Shared Memory enabled and Named Pipes and TCP/IP disabled. I then enabled both Named Pipes and TCP/IP, and this is when I started experiencing the problem. When I try to connect to the server with SSMS (with either my SQL server sysadmin login or with windows authentication), I get the following error message: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233) Why is it returning a Named Pipes error? Why would it not just use Shared Memory, as this has a higher priority order in the list of connection protocols? It seems like it is not listening on Shared Memory for some reason? When I set Named Pipes to enabled and try to connect, I get the same error message. My windows account is does not have administrator priviliges on my computer - perhaps this is making a difference in some way (as some of the discussions in this post about an "SuperSocketNetLib\Lpc" registry key seems to suggest). I have tried restarting the SQL Server service, by the way, and also tried to get someone to log onto the machine with an admin account to restart the SQL Server service. Still no luck.

    I'm encountering a problem building glib-2.26.1 on a Solaris 10 box - 64-bit. Goo diligence doesn't turn anything up, but no matter what I do the build fails in the same way. I've tried using the Sun Studio compiler, gcc (SFW) to no avail.   • running red5 on port 80

    I have a red5 application http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings that runs under red5, and is accessible on port 5080 and 8443 I've installed it on Ubuntu 10.04 The eventual aim is to have it accessible via https on 443 instead of 8443, but I thought I would initially try on 80 so that any issues were just down to the port configuration and not SSL certificates. I've tried changing the port from 5080 to 80 in the red5.properties file, but it fails to start. In the red5.log I have seen ERROR o.a.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol - Error initializing endpoint java.net.BindException: Permission denied /0.0.0.0:80 In the error.log I have seen ERROR o.a.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol - Error initializing endpoint java.net.BindException: Permission denied /0.0.0.0:80 and ERROR org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Error loading tomcat, unable to bind connector. You may not have permission to use the selected port org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: Protocol handler initialization failed: java.net.BindException: Permission denied /0.0.0.0:80 There is nothing else installed or running on port 80, so I presume that this is a "needs to be root" situation. I would rather not run an Internet accessible web service as root. I know that Tomcat can run on port 80 by changing “#AUTHBIND=no” to “AUTHBIND=yes” in /etc/default/tomcat6 but I have not been able to find anything similar for red5. Am I on a hiding to nothing, or is there better way than running as root ? Thanks!

Every few hours when I try to access application browser simply spins, and no content is retrieved.   • Sharing disk volumes across OpenVZ guests to reduce Package Management Overhead

    Is it feasible to create a single "master" OpenVZ guest who would only be used for package management, and use something like mount --bind on several other OpenVZ guests sort of trick them into using the environment installed by the master guest? The point of this would be so that users can maintain their own containers, and yet stay in sync with the master development environment, so they'll always have the latest & greatest requirements without worrying too much about system administration. If they need to install their own packages, could put them in /opt, or /usr/local (or set a path to their home directory)? To rephrase, I would like several (developer's, for example) OpenVZ guests whose /bin, /usr (and so on...) actually refer to the same disk location as that of a master OpenVZ guest who can be started up to install and update common packages for the environment to be shared by all of this group of OpenVZ guests. For what it's worth, we're running Debian 6.   • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

    I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. I've actually git pulled an exact copy of this drupal site from another testing server hosted at MediaTemple. Issue I'll visit my local development environment virtualhost (http://bbk.loc) and the front page renders correctly with no errors from drupal or apache. The issue is the subsequent pages don't return an "Object not found" Error from apache. What is more bizarre is when I add various query strings and the pages are found (like http://bbk.loc?p=user).     I used this command from shell to repair all Databases mysqlcheck -u root -p --auto-repair --check --optimize --all-databases and after that I restarted the server when it came back alive again I tried to open my vBulletin forum but I recived Database error message. and also tried to open phpMyAdmin but I received this error : #2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured).     So far I've tried using MacPorts which gives me this error: /Error: Cannot install wine for the arch(s) 'powerpc' because Error: its dependency pkgconfig is only installed for the archs 'i386 ppc'. Error: Unable to execute port: architecture mismatch To report a bug, etc... (I'm not allowed to post two links due to being a new poster...)./ I've also tried using the build script I found in the DarWINE 0.9.12 SDK download that I found on the DarWINE SourceForge.net Project Page... I've also tried the build script that I found at http://code.google.com/p/osxwinebuilder/#Building_Wine_via_the_script... None of these attempts to build DarWINE have actually worked. Whenever I build using the DarWINE build script I run it as follows: /1. I decompress the WINE tarball into ~/Downloads/WINE 2. I cd into ~/Downloads/DarWINE. 3. I run ./winemaker ~/Downloads/WINE/wine-1.2.2 or ./winemaker ~/Downloads/WINE/wine-1.2-rc2 (the reason for trying WINE 1.2-rc2 is that some people managed to get it to build on PowerPC Macs running 10.5.8...)./ I made sure to install Xcode Tools 2.5 & all the SDKs too... The net result is either a syntax type error resulting from trying to run the checked out Google Code DarWINE build script or a bunch of make errors when trying to run the official DarWINE build script that I forcefully extracted from the DarWINE 0.9.12 SDK .dmg file by using Pacifist. I trying to build DarWINE on mid-April 2006 1.42 GHz eMac with DL SuperDrive with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with 2 GBs of RAM running 10.4.11 as I mentioned earlier...     I used the copy database wizard to copy my database from our test server to our production server, the database copied everything fine except for the diagram. Okay no problem, first I make sure the target database on production has the support objects created to use database diagraming. Then I select to import data from the other database and chose the dbo.sysdiagrams.Go through with the rest of the import data wizard, but then I get the following error: Validating (Error) Messages Error 0xc0202049: Data Flow Task: Failure inserting into the read-only column "diagram_id".   • Why does clicking on Windows 7 Printer Properties Result In Driver Not Installed?

    The question I need to ask is has anyone heard of getting a "driver not installed" error when clicking on a printer's properties on Windows 7, and is there a workaround? Here are the details of the problem. One of our users has a Windows 7 desktop, and an HP LaserJet 4050 T connected to via a parallel-to-usb converter. The PLC5 universal driver was installed for series 4050 printers. I needed to install the PLC 6 driver, which completed successfully. The user is an administrator of the system, and I was prompted to and accepted running as Administrator to install the driver. After the install, I went to see the 4050's properties and was prompted that the PLC6 driver was not installed. I believe the PLC6 driver was installed, because the PLC5 driver resulted in receiving an official HP error page indicating the printer was "not set up for collating" as the second page of printing two copies of a one page email. This problem did not occur with the PLC 6 driver. Oddly enough, setting back to PLC5 produced the same error about the PLC5 driver not being installed. I ignored/dismissed the error box (did not re-install the driver), and reproduced the error, with the second page being the HP not set up for collating error page. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to clear it would be appreciated. The closest fix I could find was on a Microsoft tech page, and they had me clear winsock out of a Administrator run command line, followed by a reboot. That did not fix the problem.   • Queries passed to SQL Server are getting corrupted

    We are experiencing a bizarre error with our application at a customer site. We have managed to narrow it down to the point where we can replicate the behaviour using just Management Studio and SQL Server. We have two machines, A and B: +------------+ +--------------------+ | [A] | | [B] | | Management | -------------- | SQL Server 2008 R2 | | Studio | | Enterprise x64 | +------------+ +--------------------+ We are running a SQL script in Management Studio on machine A against the SQL Server instance on machine B. We are not actually executing the script, just parsing it. Most of the time, the parse operation works fine. Occasionally (seemingly randomly), the parse operation fails with a syntax error. The error message shows the part of the script with the error, which appears as some SQL from the original script that has been truncated and has random characters appended to it. An example: The original SQL: SELECT DISTINCT ST.TABLE_NAME as TableName FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES AS ST INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS AS SC ON SC.TABLE_NAME = ST.TABLE_NAME WHERE ST.TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE' AND SC.COLUMN_NAME = 'Identity' AND ST.TABLE_NAME != 'dtproperties' ORDER BY ST.TABLE_NAME The SQL that is in error (as reported by SQL Server): SELECT DISTINCT ST.TABLE_NAME as TableName FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES AS ST INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS AS SC ON SC.TABLE_NAME = Sa? The above example shows how the query is being corrupted. It doesn't always happen, and is not always the same bit of SQL that causes the error. Parsing this script against another SQL Server instance produces no errors, showing that the script is fine. It appears that something is corrupting the SQL that is being received the the server. This leads me to think that the problem lies either with the client end or in the transmission of the SQL from the client to the server. I have a SQL trace from the period where an error occurs, which shows the SQL has been corrupted when SQL Server receives it. We have been unable to track down any possible cause of this behaviour, and so cannot find a fix. Because the errors occur seemingly randomly, it is also very hard to generate reproduction steps to submit a bug report. Any ideas?

  • Win 7 crashes, PC reboots and says "Hard drive 0 not found" until I turn if off and on again

    I recently made the move from Windows XP to Windows 7. Since then, when my computer is on for a few hours it always ends up rebooting without warning. Then the BIOS won't recognize my hard drive (hard drive 0 not found). If I turn off my computer and then on again, it boots normally. Some details: Dell Dimension 9150 Windows 7 I updated the BIOS I updated all system drivers with the latest version from Dell (SATA, Chipset, etc.) Other drivers updated too (Graphic card, sound, etc.) There is one thing that I tried after some Googling: I turned off the DMA access to the drives, but it's still rebooting after a few hours. Any clue?
