• Good excuses NOT to use version control

  This question may seem backwards to all logical reasoning, but I encountered a team member who was working on a side project out of the main tree, and had decided ( rephrased ) I'm the only developer, we don't need version control, that's stupid Now personally, the idea horrifies me, and I can't for one justify it. So now my stance is clear, I want some legitimate answers why somebody can excuse themselves from using version control. The default answers will of course be "there is no excuse". Not what I want to see. If you can't see an excuse, then just don't post. ( Feel free to downmod excuses others post that are illegitimate/bad and give reasoning )

• MySQL indexes: how do they work?

  I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

• Ticket Bayesian(or something else) Categorization

  Hi. I search solution for ticket managment system. Do you know any commercial offers? For now I have only own dev prjects with using dspam library. Maybe I am wrong use it but it show bad results. My idea was divide all prerated ticket in 2 group: spam (it is my category) and rest to (ham - all not the same with this category). After that i trained my dspam. After I redivide all tickets in new groups (for next category) and teach dspam again (with new user - by category name)... And it works bad... My thoughs about is - bad data base tickes (i mean not correct tagging before) - bad my algorythm (it is more posible) Please give me a direction to go forward. Thanks.   Hi all, a bit of advice required here :). I recently graduated(Computer Science), and need to decide a path to take programming/technology wise. I have knowledge of Java, C, SQL most of it is university level stuff. I work daily with PHP/SQL building web apps. Which language / technology would you advise me to learn. I am very interested in Database management, GIS etc. Web dev is also very interesting to me. It is all a bit confusing since i would like to learn something that will have a value at least in the near future. I would like to have some ideas on which language/technology is god choice in order to be marketable.

It seems like lots of buzzwords are being thrown around, which confuse more than they explain. Are generic views similar to scaffolding in Ruby on Rails? • Where does one get Visual Source Safe 2005?

  I would like to install VSS 2005 so I can work on a project that is stored under it. Does anyone have any idea where the VSS 2005 client can be obtained? It does not appear to be on my VS2005 install disc (although that is for Team Suite). I cannot get any help from Google. I have an MSDN license (AA edition) but it doesn't seem to be there. This is a real product right? Just to clarify preemptively based on some of the discussions I see on Google when I search for things like "VSS 2005," I am aware of the flaws in VSS and I still need to get it working; I am not interested in converting the project to Subversion; I am not able to transfer it to TFS; I am not able to upgrade the project to VS2008.   We are developing a project that has 3 enviroments (development, test, production) So there are 3 databases (actually more than 3, because we have 5 customers so we have more than 10 databases) and they must be synchronised. There are 30 coders working for this project. Everone adds, deletes, and changes procedures, table columns etc. We need a program to store our database scripts like visual studio's team foundation server. See the change history of script file. Everyone must access that program and be able to put their scripts. Recover previous versions of script file. Execute these scripts over a selected database. Compare databases by procedures (not only by name, by content of procedure), functions, table columns, packages etc. I am searching a program like that. Which one do you suggest me?

• Should I use .pl or .cgi for Perl web script files?

I created two files 'hello.pl' and 'hello.cgi' with the code below. #!/usr/bin/perl print "Content-type:text/html\n\n"; print "hello world"; I can view the page via both http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/hello.pl and http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/hello.cgi. Which one is more sense in Perl web dev? BTW, the directory of 'cgi-bin' created by my VPS server, Do I need contact with my VPS support to remove it or just remain it like this URL style? Maybe http://www.mydomain.com/perDev/hello.cgi is better?

• MSBuild Starter Kits - i.e. Copy and just start modding...

  Hi guys Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any MSBuild starter kits out there. What I mean by starter kits is that from the looks of it most builds to kinda the same sort of steps with minor changes here and there (i.e. most builds would run test, coverage, zip up the results, produce a report, deploy etc). Also what most people in general want from a CI build, test build, release build is mostly the same with minor changes here and there. Now don't get me wrong i think that most scripts are fairly different in the end. But I can't help but think that most start out life being fairly similar. Hence does anyone know of any "starter kits" that have like a dev/CI/test/release build with the common tasks that most people would want that you can just start changing and modifying? • iPhone and Vertex Buffer Objects

  I've just started playing around with opengl es on the iphone the past couple of weeks and i'm looking at refactoring some of my code to use Vertex Buffer Objects(VBO). Before I do though I would like to make sure it'll be worth it. The problem is that afaik the only reason you create VBO's is to shift a chunk of data onto the graphics card so that it doesn't need to be retrieved from system ram when it's used. The iPhone however does not have any dedicated ram that I'm aware of so i'm struggling to see why I would benefit at all from using VBO's. I have seen talk around the internet with conflicting opinions and apple certainly want dev's to use it so there's probably still a reason to use them but just wanted to see if anyone on SO had an opinion to add.

• Asp:table bordercolor different html rendered for 1.1 and 2.0.

  Hi I have the following markup .NET 1.1 app. I want the grid lines of the table to be darkgray this is the goal here. <asp:table id="tbl" Runat="server" CellSpacing="0" BorderColor="darkgray" GridLines="Both"></asp:table> I have the app in IIS set as ver 1.1 in my dev box and 2.0 in production for various reasons. The page source in 1.1 renders this <table id="ctlTimesheetMonthly_tbl" cellspacing="0" rules="all" bordercolor="DarkGray" border="1" style="border-color:DarkGray;border-collapse:collapse;">` 2.0 renders this <table id="ctlTimesheetMonthly_tbl" cellspacing="0" rules="all" border="1" style="border-color:DarkGray;border-collapse:collapse;"> Which is wrong as it produces a white border for some reason. Any idea how to get both the same?? Malcolm

• Implementing Google Search Appliance results into website

  I’m interested to hear peoples preferred methods or approaches to implementing the search results from a Google Search Appliance into an existing website. More specifically how do people prefer to implement/embed the search results into their existing site and persist the surrounding website elements (menus, membership etc) around the search results. As far as I am aware there are 3 different approaches. Sub-domain, handle everything in the xslt – create a search.mysite.com which is completely handled by google xslt and embed surround site components in xslt. Embed search results into existing site using an iframe – Use the existing website and just use an iframe to import results into page. Embed results into existing site by using server side processing – This is how I have previously integrated search into a site using a combination of bespoke dev and the GSALib project. I would be interested to hear if anyone has other suggestions, and were people have benefited or regretted using the above approaches.

• Can FileOutputStream() take a relative path as an argument

  I am creating a FileOutputStream object. It takes a file or String as an argument in its constructor. My question is, can I give it a relative URL as an argument for the location of a file, it doesn't seem to work, but I am trying to work out if this is possible at all (if not I will stop trying). If it is not possible, how can I (from a servlet) get the absolute path (on the filesystem, not the logical URL) to the current location in such a way that I can pass that to the constructor. Part of my problem is that my dev box is Windows but I will publish this to a Unix box, so the paths cannot be the same i.e. on Windows C:/.... and on unix /usr/...

• Visual Studio 2008 resolving wrong reference

  In my project file, I have the following entry: <Reference Include="Microsoft.Practices.Unity, Version=1.2.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35, processorArchitecture=MSIL"> <HintPath>..\..\..\..\Libraries\Microsoft.Practices.Unity.dll</HintPath> </Reference> which in absolute terms translates to: C:\dev\LUT600 2.1.1\OCC600\Libraries Somehow, when I try to compile the project, Visual Studio loads a reference from a totally different path: /reference:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Enterprise Library 4.1 - October 2008\Bin\Microsoft.Practices.Unity.dll. How it resolves to this location is a complete mystery as this DLL is not referenced anywhere in this project. I have set Specific Verion to true but it still resolves the reference from this location. Any ideas? TIA. Klaus

• Codeigniter - form not rendering on live server?

  hi guys, I've written a small website with CI, which is all working fine on dev. However, when I copy the files over for live, everything works except for my form which is not being rendered. I am using <?php echo form_open('home'); ?> and <?php echo form_close(); ?> The form fields within the form, which I'm generating as follows are being rendered fine, but there is simply no form around them?! <?php $data = array( 'name'=> 'name', 'id'=> 'name', 'class'=>'textfield', 'value' => set_value('name') ); echo form_input($data); ?> Any ideas - I've used CI on a few apps, and this is the first time I've come across this issue. I've got all the helpers etc called correctly, as this is working perfectly in the development environment.

• Is it possible to use Integrated Windows Auth when Server isn't on the domain?

  Our production web servers ARE NOT part of the domain, but we'd like people to be able to log in automatically since they are logged into the domain on their PC. Is there anyway to get the browser (IE7+) to send the appropriate information to the server (IIS6) so I can retrieve the ServerVariables["AUTH_USER"] or ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"]? I presume the answer is no since if I set the security for windows auth to "on" and anonymous access to "off", then the server wouldn't know what do do with any user information for a domain which it has no knowledge of. I just want to know for sure before I give the SSO team a "not possible" answer.

• Does RTSP live streaming just not work on Android 1.5/1.6?

  My main dev phone is a Nexus 1 running 2.2. I have successfully been streaming live video to this device from a Wowza server for several weeks now. I have now taken my application (without modifications) and put it on a Sony Ericsson Xperia running 1.6. The video will not play. I get the following errors: MediaPlayer: Couldn't open file on client side, trying server side ... MediaPlayer: info/warning (1/26) PlayerDriver: Command PLAYER_INIT completed with an error or info PVMFFailure MediaPlayer: Error:(1,-1) VideoView: Error: 1,-1 I've been googling around, but just can't seem to get a clear answer. Does anyone know if live streaming just doesn't work on some versions of Android?

• Puttting together binding navigators in a project

  I am working on a group project in vb.net, in which all my team members are working on individual tables of a database. All of us are using binding navigator,where the GUI is created by drag and drop from the table. Is it possible to attach all these pieces together with imports or references? Will the changes made to the database while working on the program like table adapter can create problem? Do I need to make all those changes in database before importing ? Can you please give suggestions to put the project together.

• What is the best logging solution for a C# .NET 3.5 project?

  My team is about to start a new enterprise wide ASP.NET development project, quite possibly the largest undertaken by my department so far and the largest project that I've ever worked on. I'm looking for a good logging solution for the system. Firstly, what logging tools are currently available and widely used? Secondly, for an ASP.NET (probably MVC) enterprise applicaiton, which tool is most appropriate based on your experience? So far I've used Log4net almost exclusively for all my previous projects. It's a fantastic tool, however I would like to see if there is anything I've not used out there before I start a project of this magnitude or if there is any reason I would not want to use Log4net for a project of this size.

• crunching multiple js files during development

  I'm writing a backbone.js app. I have multiple js, css and html template files. I also have a script to crunch them into a single file so it is faster to download. How should I work during development: Add a listener to the file system and after every change compile the files so I can see it in a browser. This implies a 1-2 seconds overhead before I can see what I did, which is annoying for html fine-tuning. Somehow browse using the multiple files during development and only crunch before going to production. This means I need to have a separate index.html for dev and prod. What's your take?

• C# Compiler should give warning but doesn't?

  Someone on my team tried fixing a 'variable not used' warning in an empty catch clause. try { ... } catch (Exception ex) { } - gives a warning about ex not being used. So far, so good. The fix was something like this: try { ... } catch (Exception ex) { string s = ex.Message; } Seeing this, I thought "Just great, so now the compiler will complain about s not being used." But it doesn't! There are no warnings on that piece of code and I can't figure out why. Any ideas? PS. I know catch-all clauses that mute exceptions are a bad thing, but that's a different topic. I also know the initial warning is better removed by doing something like this, that's not the point either. try { ... } catch (Exception) { } or try { ... } catch { }

• Suggestions: Anti-Pattern counter-examples

  It doesn't seem that this exact question has been asked before, so I'll fire away: Most of us are familiar with the concept of an anti-pattern. However, avoiding implementation of anti-patterns can in principle swing too far the other way and cause problems itself. As an example, "Design by Committee" has a counter-example that I'd call "Design by Maverick" - wherein the design of an important feature is handed off to an individual to do what they think best, with the intention of reviewing their work later and deciding whether it should be finalised or go through another iteration. This takes much longer in practice as the rest of the team are occupied by other things, and can end up with a feature that's useful to nobody, particularly if the Maverick is not themselves an experienced end-user. Does anyone have any more examples of anti-pattern counter-examples?
