• Debugging "Premature end of script headers" - WSGI/Django [migrated]

  I have recently deployed an app to a shared host (webfaction), and for no apparent reason, my site will not load at all (it worked until today). It is a django app, but the django.log is not even created; the only clue is that in one of the logs, I get the error message: "Premature end of script headers", identifying my wsgi file as the source. I've tried to add logging to my wsgi file, but I can't find any log created for it. Is there any recommended way to debug this error? I am on the point of tearing my hair out. UDF – Remove Duplicate Chars From String This was a very interesting function I wrote in my early career. I am still using this function when I have to remove duplicate chars from strings. FIX : Error : 3702 Cannot drop database because it is currently in use This is a very generic error when DROP Database is command is executed and the database is not dropped. The common mistake user is kept the connection open with this database and trying to drop the database. The database cannot be dropped if there is any other connection open along with it. It is always a good idea to take database in single user mode before dropping it.   A borrowed a friend workstation with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I do not have the administrator password and I would like to format everything and install Ubuntu 12.04. I have put the iso on the usb using PendriveLinux and restarted the machine. At the boot I am presented with several options but those Ubuntu ones simply load my friends Ubuntu 10.10 OS (for which I have no password). edit: I fixed this by pressing F12 at the boot before it gave me that prompt (called GRUB). I clicked USB and finally install.

• Strategies for very fast delivery of webpages.

  I run a website Cucumbertown with an initial pay load of nearly 9KB zipped. All my js is delayed loaded with requirejs and modernizer is the only exception. Now all my webpages are Nginx cached and only 10-15% hits go to the backend proxy. And the cache is invalidated by logged in users as proxy_cache_bypass. So for an anonymous user its nearly always a cache hit. I have some basic OS tuning with default via ip dev eth0 initcwnd 15 net.ipv4.tcp_slow_start_after_idle 0 Despite an all cache & large initcwnd my pages still take 2.5 – 3 seconds. I have a yslow score of And page speed at Are there strategies that can help deliver webpages even faster than this? Deliver pages at 1+ second time for 10KB payload? Notes: My servers run of a fairly good data center from Linode at Fremont.

• Scribe Workbench Update Source

  I’ve been working with a program Scribe, similar in function to SSIS although I’m still an SSIS fanboy!! The main feature my customer has Scribe for is to load data into Microsoft CRM 4.0. A lot of what I’ve been doing is loading campaigns into CRM which are staged in SQL Server but I need to mark each one as imported so it will not get imported again. The screen shot below shows how to setup the Source update. One important thing is that the source SQL table has to have a primary key defined (this was a staging table and I did not do that at first)

I want to rotate the game world, may be loading another .tmx file for another dimensions when user want to switch dimension. the effect what I am looking for is something like this:CLICK HERE What I have thought of till now: rotating CCCamera will be mandatory. Question: How will I have the other part of the level in place while the camera rotates/rotating? I can load a CCSprite and rotate it accordingly to the 3rd dimension. phew..!! Question: When the camera and world is rotated, will the player controls work properly.. I think not...? I think a better option would be to checkout with COCOS3D... there I could implement 3d world... right?? • So you want a French Site?

  I thought I would write a quick write up of how to create a french site in SharePoint 2007. I'm not talking about a Variation but just a plain French Site from the ground up. There were some gotchas that I felt were worth blogging about. First:  go to Microsoft Telnet Article and follow the install instructions. Make sure that when you get to the download page that you select "French" as part of the drop down and you download and install the right language pack. I noticed that if you did not click the "change" button enven though I selected the 'french' language pack, it reverted back to the english language pack.   Second: You will notice a couple of things. When you go to central admin you will see the following:    Now you can pick between french site or english. You will get this if you install other language packs and they will be listed in the drop down. You will notice that you now have french headings and frech listings of sites. You see "Publishing" as a heading because I have a custom site definition that I deployed as a french site. Third: As you start navigating around and trying to create document libraries or sites you will start getting errors. Errors like the following: "Cannot make a cache safe URL for "SelectorControls.js", file not found. Please verify that the file exists under the layouts directory. " Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services. Once you resolve the issue with this "js" file, you will find that there are other js files that are missing. The only problem is that if you are not fluent in French or the language you are trying to deploy, Well, you'll have a tough time understanding error messages as they will all be in the new language you are trying to deploy. So let's just talk about what happened when you installed the language pack. In the 12 Hive:  12/Template    you will now see a 1033 folder and a 1036 folder. The 1036 folder is the folder that was created and added as part of the language pack. What the above error is saying is that now that it's looking at the 1036 folder, well, it's missing some files. The nice thing is that these files are included in the 1033 folder (which is the English Language Pack). Simply copy and paste the controls from the one folder to the other. There will be more than one conflict so you will have to move serveral controls over. Can't remember how many but simply add them as error messages come up. I had to add some navigation controls and some content selectors.   Now that's all that you need to install the Frech Language pack anc reate site collections that are entirely in a another language. Do not mistake this with Variations, where you can have multiple language sites. For those of you doing a little bit extra with this, let me share what I was doing extra and what I needed to get it working for me. I had had a custom site definition which was obviously not showing up in my selection of french sites. I was under the impression that all sites in English would show up in french and that the sites were simply routed to a new Resource file for french content. And that is the case but there is a little extra that needs to be done if you have a custom site definition deployed:  First: Under hive 12/Template/1033/XML  there is a listing of site definition files that are deployed to the English side of things. If you navigate to 12/Template/1036/XML  and open one of the site definitions you will see that they are similar and reference the existing site definitions installed on the server, except that they have some french added to descriptions and names. Simply copy the xml file of your custom template to the 1036 folder to have it show up as a selection when you select French as the dropdown entry when create a site colleciton. You can go ahead and change the description and name to suit the language it's under.    Second: As part of my site definition, I packaed up several list templates, that were saved as STP files. When you navigate to the list template listing, well, the templates are for English sites, not French so I cannot create document libraries based on the template. What now? well here comes KWIzCom to the rescue! They seem to have put out a "STP language converter" where you can take a site template or list template and convert it to any target language you are after. It's a free download, Use it and you're good to go.  One thing I will mention is that when I convereted the English documents I whent ahead and converted them to French-Canadien. And it didn't work! so I finally figured out that the French Version it was expecting in the french site was "French-France". Don't know why that is, it's just what needs to be done to get that working. When I did that, I was able to use the List templates that I created in the English site for the French Site.   Hope it helps , good luck!

When building mundane daily web applications like Classified websites, Job boards or Intranet targeted Document Management Systems, how can the twitter API help me do more things. May I please have some examples on how developers have used twitter to make their apps better? Other than the obvious use for promotional and search engine optimization purpose (yay there's a new job post on our site), what can I do with it? Also, am I late to the party? I hear a lot of upset on the internet about how twitter is apparently slowly betraying developers (I don't understand the specifics), so should I even look at the system or consider alternatives?

• Rails solution for mobile-specific content filter?

  To note, I'm not interested in simply 'hiding' content for mobile devices, I want to filter out that content completely. I'm also not trying to address the issue by building a mobile specific interface (mob.example.com). There was another question regarding something similar: How do I prevent useless content load on the page in responsive design? The solution, in that post, was to set a session during the initial request, and then use the session to filter content on subsequent requests. I primarily develop in Rails, and I'm wondering if there are any gems or ruby-specific solutions to this problem?

  I believe performance tuning (or even testing) is one the most challenging for an engineer. Well, in lots of company, this is the lowest priority than others "important" thing. My purpose of opening this post is to know what do you think*good* performance engineer should have. I can list some things like: Solid database,programming knowledge. Do single thread performance testing. Good knowledge of using the load generator tools to simulate the concurrent loads. Use different tools to monitor/measure the app/db server performance status Understand and can debug the codes. Even tune the codes. Any more ideas are always appreciated!

• Recommended requirements when outsourcing xhtml/css site building?

  I'm considering outsourcing a part of our web application development project for freelancers, namely the site building part. What I mean by site building is the process of creating the xhtml/css template files, with dummy content, from a psd file (or any other graphical layout file). The resulting xhtml/css files will be used by our developers as templates for cms based page rendering. The cms in this case is Drupal, but that might not be of much relevance. I'm looking for a good set of requirements, that will result in good quality xhtml/css code, complying with today's standards leaves little to the freelancer developer's imagination in terms of what I need I'm thinking about requirements like: Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional document type, validated by validator.w3.org Identical rendering in all modern browsers (FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE7-8) and also in IE6 All opening and closing block-level elements should be properly commented, referencing the functional part of the user interface they belong to (menu, toolbar, content, etc) No inline CSS definitions And so on. • Blender to Collada to Assimp - Rigid (Non-skinned) Animation

  I am trying to get simple animations to work, exporting from Blender and importing into my application. My first attempt was as follows: Open Blender at factory settings. Select the default cube and insert a location keyframe. Select another frame and move the cube. Insert a second location keyframe. Export to Collada. When I open the Collada file using assimp it contains zero animations, even though in Blender the cube animates correctly. On my next attempt, I inserted a bone armature with a single bone, made it the parent of the cube, and animated the bone instead. Again the animation worked correctly in Blender. Assimp now lists one animation but both key frames have the position [0, 0, 0] Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get animated (non-skinned) meshes from Blender into Assimp? My ultimate goal here is to export animated meshes from Blender, process them offline into my own model format, and load them into my SharpDX based graphics engine..

• Is there a very simple XML Editor/Viewer?

  Part of our support job is to look at XML documents sent to our systems by our clients that have failed to load correctly. I do this by pasting the file in to Visual Studio as an XML file and VS colours it and adds line-breaks, indenting, etc. and it's then usually quite simple to spot the error and manually fix it and resubmit the document. Do I really have to use Visual Studio to do this? OK, it does the job quite well, but I'd have thought that something like Notepad++ would do the job just as well with a fraction of the machine resource usage. Is there are plugin for Notepad++ or another bit of freeware that can make XML look pretty and let me make simple edits?

  What are your tips for improving overall system performance on ubuntu? Inspired by this question I realized that some default settings may be rather conservative on Ubuntu and that it's possible to tweak it with little or no risk if you wish to make it faster. This is not meant to be application specific (e.g. make firefox load pages faster), but system wide. Preferably 1 tip per answer, with enough detail for people to implement it. A couple of mine would be: Install Preload (via Software Center or sudo apt-get install preload); Change Swappiness value - "which controls the degree to which the kernel prefers to swap when it tries to free memory"; What are yours? PS: Since this is not intended to have a unique answer but rather, several useful tips, I'm making this community wiki out-of-the-box.

• How to control CPU frequency

  I am using CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor 2.30.0 on the panel to show and control CPU frequency. My CPU frequency by default will change according to load. But I want to make CPU work at the lowest level and so I choose 800 MHz in CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor. After a few seconds, however, it automatically changes back to Powersave or Performance mode which has automatic adjustment to CPU frequency. I was wondering how to actually make CPU work at the lowest level? Thanks!

• PHP sqlite not working in 13.10

Also phpliteadmin won't work either, complaining of no sqlite3 or pdo_sqlite, etc. Been all over this planet's Internet chasing leads and clues to no avail. What's wrong?

• Global keyboard states

  I have following idea about processing keyboard input. We capture input in "main" Game class like this: protected override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { this.CurrentKeyboardState = Keyboard.GetState(); // main :Game class logic here base.Update(gameTime); this.PreviousKeyboardState = this.CurrentKeyboardState; } then, reuse keyboard states (which have internal scope) in all other game components. The reasons behind this are 1) minimize keyboard processing load, and 2) reduce "pollution" of all other classes with similar keyboard state variables. Since I'm quite a noob in both game and XNA development, I would like to know if all of this sounds reasonable.

• Ubuntu boots to totally blank after I installed some graphic card updates

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, dual boot with win7 on ThinkPad T400, I followed Ubuntu update hints and installed some update for my ATI Radeon graphic card, but when I boot to Ubuntu(means I can still load GRUB), the tragedy happened, the screen goes to blank and no matter what key stroke, I can not get any responds, I try to go to text terminal, but impossible! However when I hit the power button, the computer would pop out the Ubuntu shutdown screen briefly and shut down. I figure out I should delete the updates package of my graphic card, but I don't even get a chance to go to text terminal, please help me!

• How does landscape calculate free memory?

  I'm trying to debug an OOM situation in an Ubuntu 12.04 server, and looking at the Memory graphs in Landscape, I noticed that there wasn't any serious memory usage spike spike. Then I looked at the output of the free command and I wasn't quite sure how both memory usage results relate to each other. Here's landscape's output on the server: $ landscape-sysinfo System load: 0.0 Processes: 93 Usage of /: 5.6% of 19.48GB Users logged in: 1 Memory usage: 26% IP address for eth0: - Swap usage: 2% Then I run the free command and I get: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 486 381 105 0 4 165 -/+ buffers/cache: 212 274 Swap: 255 7 248 I can understand the 2% swap usage, but where does the 26% memory usage come from?
