• Exchange Transport Service Started but not working

  Good day, Here is the problem : We are hosting a Microsoft Exchange Server. Everything working fine until recently, where the mail transport seems to go wrong. We almost have to restart the service every morning. The thing is that the transport service is started, but the mail are not delivered to the users and senders to our server get a delayed delivery notification. When we restart the service, all the mail is then delivered to the users and we're good to go for a day or two. Things I've noticed : The store service is growing to around 6 Gb of used RAM, and the w3wp.exe service is hanging around 700mb RAM. Is there a way to schedule a restart of the transport role every 4 hours or something while I'm solving the issue so I don't have to worry when I leave for the week-end? And most of all...does anyone have any idea on how to solve this issue? Thanks, Philippe

• Recovering portion(s) of file with CRC (cyclic redundancy check) errors in Robocopy

  Is it possible to recover portions of files with CRC errors? If so, how? I have a partially damaged hard drive (2.5" SATA) that I have partially recovered using Spinrite 6.0 (took 2 weeks to run!). I have been successful in getting many of the files off of the drive using Robocopy . /V /S /E /COPY:DAT /R:1 /W:0, but some of the files get to +/- 90% in Robocopy and then fail with a CRC Data Error (cyclic redundancy check). I am wondering if it is possible to recover the first 90% of the file and try to recover it in a text editor. 1.0% ... 91.0% 91.1% 2010/06/14 18:21:13 ERROR 23 (0x00000017) Copying File F:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mailbox Folder.dbx Data error (cyclic redundancy check). • Make it simple. Make it work.

  In 2010 I had an experience to work for a business that had lots of challenges. One of those challenges was luck of technical architecture and business value recognition which translated in spending enormous amount of manpower and money on creating C++ solutions for desktop client w/o using .NET to minimize “footprint” (2#) of the client application in deployment environments. This was an awkward experience, considering that C++ custom code was created from scratch to make clients talk to .NET backend while simple having .NET as a dependency would cut time to market by at least 50% (and I’m downplaying the estimate). Regardless, recent Microsoft announcement about .NET vNext has reminded me that experience and how short sighted architecture at that company was. Investment made into making C++ client that cannot be maintained internally by team due to it’s specialization in .NET have created a situation where code to maintain will be more brutal over the time and  number of developers understanding it will be going and shrinking. Not only that. The ability to go cross-platform (#3) and performance achievement gained with native compilation (#1) would be an immediate pay back. Why am I saying all this? To make a simple point to myself and remind again – when working on a product that needs to get to the market, make it simple, make it work, and then see how technology is changing and how you can adopt. Simplicity will not let you down. But a complex solution will always do.

• Setting default version on Azure Blob Storage?

  What is the easiest way, without having to create your own utility, to set the default service version to the latest in Azure Blob Storage ? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/dd894041 There is basically nothing to be set in the Azure portal and I am having a difficult time finding working utilities to use for Azure. For some reason Azure is defaulting to the oldest version which does not send things like the http range header for example. Any utility that can do this ? Thank you.

• How to unlock files using handle.exe and process name?

  I tried Unlocker 1.9.1 but it doesn't work correctly for me on Windows7 (worked ok on Windows XP) and also I tried LockHunter 2.0.2.103 x64 and reported a bug but .... LockHunter actually unlocks the file from GUI but not from command line. So I want to use handle.exe by SysInternals to unlock one file "TestPro.log". I know the absolut path if it helps. I can list and all processes that locked the file by executing C:\Windows\system32>c:\edutester\progs\handle testpro.log java.exe pid: 2120 type: File 338: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log java.exe pid: 1004 type: File 934: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log What I need to know how to unlock the file using above info from command line automatically. No user intervention is possible. Windows 7 64bit Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Two Connections Related Global Variables Explained – @@CONNECTIONS and @@MAX_CONNECTIONS @@CONNECTIONS Returns the number of attempted connections, either successful or unsuccessful since SQL Server was last started. @@MAX_CONNECTIONS Returns the maximum number of simultaneous user connections allowed on an instance of SQL Server. The number returned is not necessarily the number currently configured. Query Editor – Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This post may be very simple for most of the users of SQL Server 2005. Earlier this year, I have received one question many times – Where is Query Analyzer in SQL Server 2005? I wrote small post about it and pointed many users to that post – SQL SERVER – 2005 Query Analyzer – Microsoft SQL SERVER Management Studio. Recently I have been receiving similar question. OUTPUT Clause Example and Explanation with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE SQL Server 2005 has a new OUTPUT clause, which is quite useful. OUTPUT clause has access to insert and deleted tables (virtual tables) just like triggers. OUTPUT clause can be used to return values to client clause. OUTPUT clause can be used with INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE to identify the actual rows affected by these statements. OUTPUT clause can generate a table variable, a permanent table, or temporary table. Even though, @@Identity will still work with SQL Server 2005, however I find the OUTPUT clause very easy and powerful to use. Let us understand the OUTPUT clause using an example. Find Name of The SQL Server Instance Based on database server stored procedures has to run different logic. We came up with two different solutions. 1) When database schema is very much changed, we wrote completely new stored procedure and deprecated older version once it was not needed. 2) When logic depended on Server Name we used global variable @@SERVERNAME. It was very convenient while writing migrating script which depended on the server name for the same database. Explanation of TRY…CATCH and ERROR Handling With RAISEERROR Function One of the developers at my company thought that we can not use the RAISEERROR function in new feature of SQL Server 2005 TRY… CATCH. When asked for an explanation he suggested SQL SERVER – 2005 Explanation of TRY… CATCH and ERROR Handling article as excuse suggesting that I did not give example of RAISEERROR with TRY…CATCH. Due to the nature of this article most of the content is referred from Book On-Line. sqlwbcommand prompt utility which opens SQL Server Management Studio. Squib command does not run queries from the command prompt. sqlcmd utility runs queries from command prompt, read for more information. 2008 Puzzle – Solution – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation Just a day before I wrote article SQL SERVER – Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation which was inspired by SQL Server MVP Jacob Sebastian. I suggest that before continuing this article read the original puzzle question SQL SERVER – Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation.The question was if the computed column was of datatype TINYINT how to create a Computed Column of datatype INT? 2008 – Find If Index is Being Used in Database It is very often I get a query that how to find if any index is being used in the database or not. If any database has many indexes and not all indexes are used it can adversely affect performance. If the number of indices are higher it reduces the INSERT / UPDATE / DELETE operation but increase the SELECT operation. It is recommended to drop any unused indexes from table to improve the performance. 2009 Interesting Observation – Execution Plan and Results of Aggregate Concatenation Queries If you want to see what’s going on here, I think you need to shift your point of view from an implementation-centric view to an ANSI point of view. ANSI does not guarantee processing the order. Figure 2 is interesting, but it will be potentially misleading if you don’t understand the ANSI rule-set SQL Server operates under in most cases. Implementation thinking can certainly be useful at times when you really need that multi-million row query to finish before the backup fire off, but in this case, it’s counterproductive to understanding what is going on. SQL Server Management Studio and Client Statistics Client Statistics are very important. Many a times, people relate queries execution plan to query cost. This is not a good comparison. Both parameters are different, and they are not always related. It is possible that the query cost of any statement is less, but the amount of the data returned is considerably larger, which is causing any query to run slow. How do we know if any query is retrieving a large amount data or very little data? 2010 I encourage all of you to go through complete series and write your own on the subject. I always remembered the syntax and ha d actually written it down before, but somehow it was not coming to mind quickly this time. I searched online and I ended up on my own article written last year SQL SERVER – Get Last Running Query Based on SPID. I felt that I am getting old because I forgot this really simple syntax. Find Total Number of Transaction on Interval In one of my recent Performance Tuning assignments I was asked how do someone know how many transactions are happening on a server during certain interval. I had a handy script for the same. Following script displays transactions happened on the server at the interval of one minute. You can change the WAITFOR DELAY to any other interval and it should work. 2011 Here are two DMV’s which are newly introduced in SQL Server 2012 and provides vital information about SQL Server. Quick Note about JOIN – Common Questions and Simple Answers In this blog post we are going to talk about join and lots of things related to the JOIN.   On Monday 12/6/2010, Florida witnessed the inauguration of the state’s first official chapter of the International Association for Software Architects (IASA). Present were Ms. Damaris Bode, Global IASA Chapter Director and Mr. Uday Batt, President of the Indian Chapter.   Ms. Bode spoke to us about the various benefits IASA offers to its members as well as the various available education courses and certification tracks. • SQL CLR not properly enabling

  We have a SQL server running SQL 2005 Workgroup 64 bit (9.0.4273), on Windows 2003 server 64 bit. We have run sp_configure and reconfigured the server which indicates that the clr is now enabled. exec sp_configure 'clr enabled', '1' go reconfigure go However, when trying to call CREATE ASSEMBLY the server completely dies on us and we have to do a full reboot of the machine. A little more diagnostic information, even though clr enabled is set to 1 and we have rebooted the full server, running the following statement select * from sys.dm_clr_properties returns directory version state locked CLR version with mscoree which is what it says when the CLR is not enabled on another machine. On a correctly enabled machine (after reboot) this function reads directory C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\ version v2.0.50727 state CLR is initialized

  I have this idea, just want to see if it is implementable or not. Let say I have my office laptop, with no administrator privileges, using example domain ASDF Can I set at my home, another AD server (Microsoft or Samba 4), that have the same domain ASDF as my office laptop. Then I set an administrative user in my own AD server. Theoretically, is it possible to authenticate my office laptop with my own AD? If the above is possible, theoretically, is it possible to gain administrative privileges also with this setup? Thanks.

• What happened to Alan Cooper's Unified File Model?

  For a long time Alan Cooper (in the 3 versions of his book "About Face") has been promoting a "unified file model" to, among other things, dispense with what he calls the most idiotic message box ever invented - the one the pops up when hit the close button on an app or form saying "Do you want to discard your changes?" I like the idea and his arguments, but also have the knee-jerk reaction against it that most seasoned programmers and users have. While Cooper's book seems quite popular and respected, there is remarkably little discussion of this particular issue on the Web that I can find. Petter Hesselberg, the author of "Programming Industrial Strength Windows" mentions it but that seems about it. I have an opportunity to implement this in the (desktop) project I am working on, but face resistance by customers and co-workers, who are of course familiar with the MS Word and Excel way of doing things. I'm in a position to override their objections, but am not sure if I should. My questions are: Are there any good discussions of this that I have failed to find? Is anyone doing this in their apps? Is it a good idea that it is unfortunately not practical to implement until, say, Microsoft does it?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise database has unexpected 4GB database size limit

  I have SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installed on a local Windows 7 x64 workstation. When I create a database on the server, it unexpectedly has a 4GB size limit (Database properties in SQL Server Management Studio say size = 3934.38 MB, space available = 47.13 MB). Unfortunately the database needs more than 4GB, and Enterprise is not supposed to have a practical maximum size. I confirmed the database is on the Enterprise server: SELECT @@VERSIONMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 2010 15:48:46 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) The database file is not set to restrict growth in SQL Server Management Studio, and there is plenty of hard drive space. The database was copied from SQL Express (which has a 4GB limit), but the same occurs with a fresh database creation. I've spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out and Google-searching, to no avail. Any ideas?

• Linqpad with Table Storage

  LinqPad as we all know has been a wonderful tool for running ad-hoc queries. With Azure Table storage in picture LinqPad was no longer in picture and we shifted focus to Cloud Storage Studio only to realize the limited and strange querying capabilities of CSS. With some tweaking to Linqpad we can get the comfortable old shoe of ad-hoc queries with LinqPad in the Azure Table storage. Steps: 1. Start LinqPad 2. Right Click in the query window and select “Query Properties” 3. In The Additional References add reference to Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient, System.Data.Services.Client.dll and the assembly containing the implementation of the DataServiceContext class tied to the Azure table storage. 4. In the additional namespace imports import the same three namespaces mentioned above. 5. Then we need to provide following details. a. Table storage account name and shared key. b. DataServiceContext implementing class in your code. c. • Disable ability to add startup items in Windows 7?

  Note: This is not the question "How to disable startup items" because the simple answer is: "Use msconfig". Now as for my question: I recently am very annoyed that some programs add startup items to my PC without my knowledge after installation, I always have 2 programs which startup - Temperature monitor and the Catalyst Control Center Tray. Now, sometimes I install something and it adds startup entries, how can I make sure that no startup entries can be added to windows anymore? So what I would like to do: -Disable adding scheduled tasks (even for administrator accounts, so programs installing from them can't add startup entries too) -Disable adding startup entries to the registry (even for administrators, would changing the permissions in HKLM on the Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to read only be enough?) -Disable all other methods of startup in Windows 7 I don't know -Set default startup of NEW installed services to "Start Manually" instead of/and block "Start Automaticly" and "Start Automaticly (Delayed)" How can I accomplish this? This is also a nice way to prevent most viruses fom running after machine reboot (if this can be accomplished).

Today I went to see my downloads page and I found a list of the new versions to be downloaded. Windows 8 Windows 8 N Windows 8 Pro Windows 8 Pro N Windows 8 Enterprise Windows 8 Enterprise N I know the difference between the versions "Windows 8", "Windows 8 Pro" and "Windows 8 Enterprise", which you easily find at wikipedia. But, I really need to know the difference between these versions and the "N" versions before download one of them.

• Registering OCX on 64-bit Windows 7

  I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA? The Web Camps are two day events.  The camps aren’t conferences where you sit quietly for hours and people talk at you – they are intended to be interactive.  The first day is focused on learning through presentations that are heavy on coding demos.  The second day is focused on you building real applications using what you’ve learned.  The second day includes hands-on labs, and you’ll join small development teams with other attendees and work on a project together. • Ubuntu eats itself after I followed updater instruction

  Updater (I assume) put a no entry style alert icon on the panel which informed me that certain package dependencies were not up to snuff. Upgrades were thereafter only partial. The dialogue advised that I (and this is from noob memory) sudo apt-get install -f. I did this and typed in the confirmation phrase and watched apt-get systematically remove every component of linux, both the stuff I installed and the core ubuntu packages. I could only assume at this stage that this was for a fresh install but of course, I know better now. There's much complaint about Windows, but I've never met with advice from Microsoft tools to wipe out the operating system because of a couple of missing .dlls. So what gives? This was a 64 bit install of 12.04. All that is left is grub pointing to a couple of windows recovery partitions on the hard drive. I'm tempted, but I have hopes of recovering the data that I had enough misguided faith to trust to the linux ext4 partition. I've tried pen driving back into it with a 32 bit iso but I'm simply informed that ubuntu is running in low graphics mode and get to watch the dots cycle indefinitely. EDIT: Thanks for the advice vis positive request. I've got onto the machine with a 64 bit stick and can see the file structure left behind by the installation. My first instinct was to run install from the stick but it did not seem to offer a recovery option. My question then: is there a way to recover the current installation so that if I reinstall the packages I had they will pick up the original settings. I'm particularly worried about losing email from evolution - the rest I could probably lash back together. I would also be interested how this disaster came about. I see people in the know recommending this same procedure in similar circumstances. Thanks for your attention, Tony Martin

  What online backup tool allows you to: A) Back up Windows, Linux and optionally Mac desktops and servers to the cloud B) Do so by first backing up to a central server or appliance C) Allow restoring from that appliance when possible and if not go to the cloud For now the best option I have seen is i365 by seagate with an appliance between the local computers and the cloud. I know Microsoft also has an i365 plugin for DPM, as well as an Iron Mountain plugin. However, I feel that there must be a simpler way to do this. Can any of the "simpler" solutions like Jungle Disk or anything else going to s3, Mozy, Carbonite, Crashplan, etc do this? Thank you

  I am setting up a small network and i am stuck at rerouting the Links folder on Windows 7. What i am trying to accomplish is to keep some particular directories stored on a server and all client computers will actually link to those folders, one of which is the Links folder. I took a look at the registry and found most of the things in : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders But the Links folder isn't there so im wondering if it's possible to sync that folder over several PCs too without moving all the user directories to the server Any hint is appreciated!

• LobsterPot Solutions in the USA

  We’re expanding! I’m thrilled to announce that Microsoft Gold Partner LobsterPot Solutions has started another branch appointing the amazing Ted Krueger (5-time SQL MVP awardee) as the US lead. Ted is well-known in the SQL Server world, having written books on indexing, consulting and on being a DBA (not to mention contributing chapters to both MVP Deep Dives books). He is an expert on replication and high availability, and strong in the Business Intelligence space – vast experience which is both broad and deep. Ted is based in the south east corner of Wisconsin, just north of Chicago. He has been a consultant for eons and has helped many clients with their projects and problems, taking the role as both technical lead and consulting lead. He is also tireless in supporting and developing the SQL Server community, presenting at conferences across America, and helping people through his blog, Twitter and more. Despite all this – it’s neither his technical excellence with SQL Server nor his consulting skill that made me want him to lead LobsterPot’s US venture. I wanted Ted because of his values. In the time I’ve known Ted, I’ve found his integrity to be excellent, and found him to be morally beyond reproach. This is the biggest priority I have when finding people to represent the LobsterPot brand. I have no qualms in recommending Ted’s character or work ethic. It’s not just my thoughts on him – all my trusted friends that know Ted agree about this.
