  • Parallel File Copy

    I have a list of files I need to copy on a Linux system - each file ranges from 10 to 100GB in size. I only want to copy to the local filesystem. Is there a way to do this in parallel - with multiple processes each responsible for copying a file - in a simple manner? I can easily write a multithreaded program to do this, but I'm interested in finding out if there's a low level Linux method for doing this.

I've installed Windows 7 RTM (x64) I have this audio device: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio I have tried using the windows 7 basic driver, and also the Vista 64-bit driver from Dell's website (details): Date: 10/29/2007 Version: 6.10.0.5511, A04 File Size: 7 MB With both drivers, I get normal stereo sound from the driver, but my 5.1 surround sound doesn't work. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix?

    Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10sek. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessarry boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sek I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks

    Is there a program where I can type one, two or more components of chemical reaction and find out the result of it? For example, I enter "N2 + H2" and it gives me "N2 + H2 ? NH3". Or "C10H8 + O2" and it shows "C10H8 + O2 ? CO2 + H2O". I don't need coefficient calculator, where I type full reaction and it calculates coefficients (marked bold in next example): C10H8 + 12 O2 = 10 CO2 + 4 H2O.

  • Finder Using Nearly 100% CPU

    I'm having a problem where the Finder uses WAY too much CPU time. It's using up to 100% of one of my cores. I'm running 10.6.2 on a MacBook Pro w/ 6GB of RAM, plenty of fast (SSD) disk space. I also run DropBox and BackBlaze. I've tried disabling my third party stuff (DropBox and BackBlaze), but that doesn't seem to help. It's killing my battery life!

  • Hylafax / Capi4hylafax: faxgetty does not recognize number of lines

    We've got a T.30 card, 30 working lines on it, but for some reason, if I add more then 30 faxes in the queue at any time (and we're busy enough at peak times that this happens a lot), faxgetty sends faxes to non-existent lines and they appear in the error queue as a 'busy' signal on the line, which results in a lot of failed faxes because the counter of max 3 tries increases rapidly. This is using faxgetty (USE_FAXGETTY="y" in /etc/default/hylafax). I've inherited this thing, so I'm not entirely sure how faxgetty is supposed to know the number of lines. However, if I alter the script to faxmodem (USE_FAXGETTY="n" in /etc/default/hylafax and manually enabling 30 modems), this behavior goes away (new faxes 'wait' for a line to be available before trying to send, so each try / fail is a valid one on a working line, majorly descreasing the amount of failed faxes. However, when researching this almost anyone talks about faxgetty being the preferred, more robust, method, and on top of that for some unexplained reason all FIFO's disappeared for some reason after several errorless hours with faxmodem, forcing a hylafax restart using faxgetty until we figured out why this faxmodem solution failed (which is another question, and somewhat out of scope here). We will not be receiving any faxes on this machine b.t.w. As I said, I've inherited this thing, so if there are important configuration options I'm not including, please let me know.

  • 16GB winsxs folder on windows vista

  • How to reset mysql's replication settings completely, without reinstalling it?

    I set up mysql replication by adding references to binlogs, relay logs etc in my.cnf restarted mysql, it worked. I wanted to change it so I deleted all binlog related files including log-bin.index, removed binlog statements from my.cnf restarted server, works set master to '', purge master logs since now(), reset slave, stop slave, stop master. now, to set up replication again, I added binlog statements to the server. But then I hit this problem when restarting with: sudo mysqld (the only way to see mysql's startup errors) I get this error: /usr/sbin/mysqld: File '/etc/mysql/var/log-bin.index' not found (Errcode: 13) Because indeed, this file does not exist! (I deleted it, while trying to set up a new replication system) Hmm, if I change the config line to: log-bin-index = log-bin.index I get a different error: [ERROR] Can't generate a unique log-filename /etc/mysql/var/bin.(1-999) [ERROR] MSYQL_BIN_LOG::open failed to generate new file name. [ERROR] Aborting The first time I set up replication on this system, I didn't need to create this file. I did the same thing - added references to a previously non-existing file, and mysql created it. Same with relay logs, etc. I don't know why mysql insists on trying to read the old folder. Should I just reinstall the whole package again? My version of rubygem was very old, but at least it was working before. How do I fix the above problem or roll back to my earlier version?

When I physically install the card I put it into a purple slot on the motherboard that the old card was in (if I go into the device manager and select properties on the current card it confirms that the slot is a "PCI Slot 16 (PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0)") and boot up the computer but get absolutely no output. The screen that we have registers that it is connected to something (by not displaying the screen it does when the cable is unplugged) but just remains blank, no output at all. I recently took the card to my University and one of my friends who is better with hardware issues than I am tried it in his system and it worked perfectly. No issues whatsoever. I do not have a spec list for his system but I could get one if you need it. If you need any more information on this issue I will be happy to supply you with it as I am starting to get very annoyed with this problem ^_^
