  • How easy is it to write a Flash app and what tools are needed?

    - by J Lynch
I have been wanting to learn to write a Flash app so that it can be embedded inside a webpage. But is it hard to write one, say, just to show a circle bouncing around the walls of the 4 sides of the Flash window (no gravity, but just like the dot in the game "Pong"), and what tools are needed (and are they free?). Thanks very much.

  • Facelet selectOneMenu with POJOs and converter problem

    - by c0d3x
Hi, I want to have a facelet page with a formular and a dropdown menu. With the dropdown menu the user shoul select a POJO of the type Lieferant: public class Lieferant extends AbstractPersistentWarenwirtschaftsObject { private String firma; public Lieferant(WarenwirtschaftDatabaseLayer database, String firma) { this(database, null, firma); } public Lieferant(WarenwirtschaftDatabaseLayer database, Long primaryKey, String firma) { super(database, primaryKey); this.firma = firma; } public String getFirma() { return firma; } @Override public String toString() { return getFirma(); } @Override public int hashCode() { final int prime = 31; int result = 1; result = prime * result + ((firma == null) ? 0 : firma.hashCode()); return result; } @Override public boolean equals(Object obj) { if (this == obj) return true; if (obj == null) return false; if (getClass() != obj.getClass()) return false; Lieferant other = (Lieferant) obj; if (firma == null) { if (other.firma != null) return false; } else if (!firma.equals(other.firma)) return false; return true; } } Here is the facelet code that I wrote: <h:selectOneMenu> tag. This tag should display a list of POJOs (not beans) of the type Lieferant. Here is the facelet code: <h:selectOneMenu id="lieferant" value="#{lieferantenBestellungBackingBean.lieferant}"> <f:selectItems var="lieferant" value="#{lieferantenBackingBean.lieferanten}" itemLabel="#{lieferant.firma}" itemValue="#{lieferant.primaryKey}" /> <f:converter converterId="LieferantConverter" /> </h:selectOneMenu> Here is the refenrenced managed backing bean @ManagedBean @RequestScoped public class LieferantenBackingBean extends AbstractWarenwirtschaftsBackingBean { private List<Lieferant> lieferanten; public List<Lieferant> getLieferanten() { if (lieferanten == null) { lieferanten = getApplication().getLieferanten(); } return lieferanten; } } As far as I know, I need a custom converter, to swap beetween POJO and String representations of the Lieferant objects. Here is what the converter looks like: @FacesConverter(value="LieferantConverter") public class LieferantConverter implements Converter { @Override public Object getAsObject(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, String value) { long primaryKey = Long.parseLong(value); WarenwirtschaftApplicationLayer application = WarenwirtschaftApplication.getInstance(); Lieferant lieferant = application.getLieferant(primaryKey); return lieferant; } @Override public String getAsString(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object value) { return value.toString(); } } The page loads without any error. When I fill out the formular and submit it, there is an error message displayed on the page: Bestellung:lieferantenBestellungForm:lieferant: Validierungsfehler: Wert ist keine gültige Auswahl translated: validation error: value is not a valid selection Unfortunaltely it does not say which value it is talking about. The converter seems to work correctly. I found this similar question from stackoverflow and this article about selectOneMenu and converters, but I was not able to find the problem in my code. Why is List<SelectItem> used in the example from the second link. Gives the same error for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Java3d resetting to a new scene

    - by Dan Howard
Hi all, I'm working on a game in Java3D. I read all my level info from a file and it works fine. But now I want to re-initialize the scene from reading data from a different file. How do I reset the scene? Should I just destroy the whole canvas3D and universe objects?

  • What side project/research should be chosen to increase my Marketability

    - by CheesePls
I am a Junior CS Major at a Javaschool and I find myself having an easy time and thought there may be some good project or a language to learn or research in this newfound free time. What would you recommend so as to increase my ability to find a good job(somewhere that allows for continuous learning and treats its programmers well)after college? My thoughts were learning Scheme, making a working Zelda-like game(the original), find some open source project to help with.

  • Overloading framework methods in objective-c, or retaining local changes with framework updates.

    - by Jeff B
I am using cocos2d to build an iPhone game. It's mostly done, but along the way I came across some things that I would like to handle better. I am fairly new to Objective C, and honestly I do more Perl scripting in my day-to-day job than anything, so my C skills are a little rusty. One of them is the fact that I have modified cocos2d files for some specific cases in my game. However, when I update to a new version, I have to manually pull my changes forward. So, the question is, what is the best way to deal with this? Some options I have thought of: Overload/redefine the cocos2d classes. I was under the impression that I cannot overload existing class functions, so I don't think this will work. Create patches that I re-apply after library updates. I don't think this will work as the new files won't necessarily be the same as the old ones, and if they were, I could just copy the whole file forward. Turn in my changes to Cocos2d. Not an option as my changes are very specific to my application. Am I missing something obvious? UPDATE: I will explain what I am doing to be more clear. Cocos2d has a CCNode object, which can contain children, etc. I added a shadow, which is very similar to a child, but handled a little differently. The shadow has an offset from the parent, and translates with it's parent, rotates around it's own center when the parent rotates, etc. The shadow is not included as a true child, however, so given the correct z-index, the shadows can render under ALL other objects, but still move with the parent. To do this I added addShadow functions to CCNode, and modified the setPosition and setRotate functions to move the shadowSprite: CCNode.m: -(id) init { if ((self=[super init]) ) { ... shadowSprite_ = nil; ... } } ... -(BOOL) addShadow: (CCNode*) child offset: (CGPoint) offset { shadowSprite_ = child; shadowSprite_.position = CGPointMake(position_.x+offset.x, position_.y+offset.y); return YES; } ... -(void) setRotation: (float)newRotation { rotation_ = newRotation; isTransformDirty_ = isInverseDirty_ = YES; if(shadowSprite_) { [shadowSprite_ setRotation: newRotation]; } } There is more, of course, including the prototypes in the .h file, but that is the basics. I don't think I need shadowSprite to be a property, because I don't need to access it after it has been added.

  • Class type while deserialization in c++

    - by Rushi
I am developing game editor in c++.I have implemented reflection mechanism using DiaSDK.Now I want to store state of the objects(Like Camera,Lights,Static mesh) in some level file via serialization. And later on able to retrieve their state via deserialization.Serializing objects is not a problem for me.But while deserializing objects how do I know class type?so that i can create object of that particular type.

  • Optimising movement on hex grid

    - by Mloren
I am making a turn based hex-grid game. The player selects units and moves them across the hex grid. Each tile in the grid is of a particular terrain type (eg desert, hills, mountains, etc) and each unit type has different abilities when it comes to moving over the terrain (e.g. some can move over mountains easily, some with difficulty and some not at all). Each unit has a movement value and each tile takes a certain amount of movement based on its terrain type and the unit type. E.g it costs a tank 1 to move over desert, 4 over swamp and cant move at all over mountains. Where as a flying unit moves over everything at a cost of 1. The issue I have is that when a unit is selected, I want to highlight an area around it showing where it can move, this means working out all the possible paths through the surrounding hexes, how much movement each path will take and lighting up the tiles based on that information. I got this working with a recursive function and found it took too long to calculate, I moved the function into a thread so that it didn't block the game but still it takes around 2 seconds for the thread to calculate the moveable area for a unit with a move of 8. Its over a million recursions which obviously is problematic. I'm wondering if anyone has an clever ideas on how I can optimize this problem. Here's the recursive function I'm currently using (its C# btw): private void CalcMoveGridRecursive(int nCenterIndex, int nMoveRemaining) { //List of the 6 tiles adjacent to the center tile int[] anAdjacentTiles = m_ThreadData.m_aHexData[nCenterIndex].m_anAdjacentTiles; foreach(int tileIndex in anAdjacentTiles) { //make sure this adjacent tile exists if(tileIndex == -1) continue; //How much would it cost the unit to move onto this adjacent tile int nMoveCost = m_ThreadData.m_anTerrainMoveCost[(int)m_ThreadData.m_aHexData[tileIndex].m_eTileType]; if(nMoveCost != -1 && nMoveCost <= nMoveRemaining) { //Make sure the adjacent tile isnt already in our list. if(!m_ThreadData.m_lPassableTiles.Contains(tileIndex)) m_ThreadData.m_lPassableTiles.Add(tileIndex); //Now check the 6 tiles surrounding the adjacent tile we just checked (it becomes the new center). CalcMoveGridRecursive(tileIndex, nMoveRemaining - nMoveCost); } } } At the end of the recursion, m_lPassableTiles contains a list of the indexes of all the tiles that the unit can possibly reach and they are made to glow. This all works, it just takes too long. Does anyone know a better approach to this?

  • Why is go language so slow?

    - by oraz
As we can see from The Computer Language Benchmarks Game: go is in average 10x slower then C go is 3x slower then Java !? How it can be bearing in mind that go compiler produces native code for execution? Immature compilers for go? Or there is some intrinsic problem with the go language?

  • Why not install Msvcr71.dll into system32?

    - by hillu
While looking for an authoritative source for the missing Msvcr71.dll that is needed by a few old applications, I stumbled across the MSDN article Redistribution of the shared C runtime component in Visual C++. The advice given to developers is to drop the DLL into the application's directory instead of system32 since DLLs in this directory are considered before the system paths. What can/will go wrong if I (as an administrator, not a developer) decide to take the lazy path and install Msvcr71.dll (and Msvcp71.dll while I'm at it) into the system32 directory (of 32 bit Windows XP or Windows 7 systems) instead of putting a copy in each application's directory? Is there another good solution to provide the applications with the needed DLLs that doesn't involve copying stuff to the application directories?

  • Apache - The name

    - by Josh
I am working on a migration to a newer virtualized server. The old one has Apache 2.2.4 according to the old servers phpinfo(). The new one with the most up to date has 2.2.3 . How can this be assuming no trickery is involved? The old one is years old. Alot of the guides I reference use apache2 in folders names and many of the conventions. The newest version of things, as I understand it is called httpd. Did apache change the name from what it originally was? (i.e. break the web server component into its own project called httpd, I realize the original daemon was probably still called httpd)

  • Getting shortest path between 2 nodes in quickgraph

    - by Xtapodi
Hello, i want to ask if there is any way to generate the shortest path from node A to node B without generating the shortest paths to all the other nodes (stop when node B is in the examined set) with A-star in QuickGraph. I want to plug QuickGraph into a game and thus generating all the paths is not allowed from the time limitations the environment imposes. Any other suggestions to solve my problem in C# are welcome Thanks in advance, Xtapodi

  • Best beginner programming language?

    - by mtwisterr
I want to learn a simple language so I can code simple things maybe eventually a game but I don't know where to start. I can code simple things using apple script but you can't do that much with that and it only works on macs. I have a mac and a dell so something that I could code and run on both would be nice. Also all my school offers is java so if you have any ideas on how to learn the language that would be appreciated. Thanks

    - by Md Atif
I need advise, I want to buy PC components which will be good for gaming as well as be under my budget. First thing I chose is Graphics card : ATI HD 7850 2GB DDR5 then matching things up with this selected following: Processor: AMD 3.5 GHz AM3 FX 8320 8 Core Piledriver Mobo: MSI 990FXA-GD65 RAM : 8GB DDR3 (4x2) Is this setup looks compatible? If making any of above component inferior will have negligible affect on performance/gaming(like buying 970 chip mobo instead of 990) then please let me know so I can save some money :) ? • resizing an array with C

    - by Gary
So I need to have an array of structs in a game I'm making - but I don't want to limit the array to a fixed size. I'm told there is a way to use realloc to make the array bigger when it needs to, but can't find any working examples of this. Could someone please show me how to do this? Thanks!

  • Visual Studio 2008 crashes whenever I try to add a file to TFS

    - by Herms
Wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows of a way to fix it. I have Visual Studio 2008 Pro with Team Explorer 2008 installed. Starting a couple of weeks ago any time I try to add a file to TFS (using the "Add Items to Folder" button in the Source Control Explorer window) VS crashes. I briefly see an "unhandled exception" dialog appear, but VS quits right after the dialog opens. I was able to see the exception at one point, and it looked like an index out of bounds exception trying to access some UI component list at -1 (can't remember the specifics, and it closes before I can bring it up now). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling VS a couple of times already, along with resetting all of my settings. Neither helped.

  • Regex to extract a string between two delimeters WITHOUT also returning the delimeters?

    - by CSharp Noob
Hello, I want to just extract the text between the brackets -- NOT the brackets, too! My code looks currently like this: var source = "Harley, J. Jesse Dead Game (2009) [Guard]" // Extract role with regex m = Regex.Match(source, @"[(.*)]"); var role = m.Groups[0].Value; // role is now "[Guard]" role = role.Substring(1, role.Length-2); // role is now "Guard" Can you help me to simplify this to just a single regex, instead of the regex, then the substring?

  • Increase efficiency for an R simulator of the Monty Hall Puzzle

    - by jahan_m
The Monty Hall Problem is a simple puzzle involving probability that even stumps professionals in careers dealing with some heavy-duty math. Here's the basic problem: Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice? You can find numerous explanations of the solution here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem Goal of my simulation: Prove that a switching strategy will win you the car 2/3 of the time. I got curious and wanted to write a little function that simulates the problem many times and returns the proportion of wins if you switched and the proportion of wins if you stayed with your first choice. The function then plots the cumulative wins. First and foremost, I'm interested in hearing if my simulation is indeed replicating the Monty Problem, or if some aspect of the code got it wrong. Secondly, this function takes a long time to run once I get to about 10,000 simulations. I know I don't need this many simulations to prove this but I'd love to hear some ideas on how to make it more efficient. Thanks for your feedback! Monty_Hall=function(repetitions){ doors=c('A','B','C') stay_wins=0 switch_wins=0 series=data.frame(sim_num=seq(repetitions),cum_sum_stay=replicate(repetitions,0),cum_sum_switch=replicate(repetitions,0)) for(i in seq(repetitions)){ winning_door=sample(doors,1) contestant_chooses=sample(doors,1) if(contestant_chooses==winning_door) stay_wins=stay_wins+1 else switch_wins=switch_wins+1 series[i,'cum_sum_stay']=stay_wins series[i,'cum_sum_switch']=switch_wins } plot(series$sim_num,series$cum_sum_switch,col=2,ylab='Cumulative # of wins', xlab='Simulation #',main=sprintf('%d Simulations of the Monty Hall Paradox',repetitions),type='l') lines(series$sim_num,series$cum_sum_stay,col=4) legend('topleft',legend=c('Cumulative wins from switching', 'Cumulative wins from staying'),col=c(2,4),lty=1) result=list(series=series,stay_wins=stay_wins,switch_wins=switch_wins, proportion_stay_wins=stay_wins/repetitions, proportion_switch_wins=switch_wins/repetitions) return(result) } #Theory predicts that it is to the contestant's advantage if he #switches his choice to the other door. This function simulates the game #many times, and shows you the proportion of games in which staying or #switching would win the car. It also plots the cumulative wins for each strategy.
