Document Management System - Where to Store Files?

Hey, stack! I'm on charge of building an ASP.NET MVC Document Management System. It have to be able to do basic document management tasks like adding, editing and searching entries and also perform versioning. Anyways, I'm targeting PDF, Office and many image formats as the file attached to each document entry in the database. My question is: What design guidelines do pros follow when building the storage mechanism? Do they store the document files in the file system? Database? How file uploading is handled? I used to upload the files to a temporal location while the user was editing the data and move it to permanent storage when the user confirmed the entry creation. Is this good? Any suggestions on improvement?

Reading PGP key information

can someone show a description of the information of what a pgp looks like if only the descriptions were there but not the actual information? something like (i dont remember if the values are correct): packet-type[4 bits], total length in bytes[16 bits], packet version type [4 bits], creation-time[32 bits], encryption-algorithm[8 bits], ...,etc,etc ive tried to understand rfc4880, but its tedious and confusing. so far, i am think i have extracted the 4 i wrote above, but i cant seem to get the rest of the information out. can anyone help? i know i can just find some pgp program, but the whole point of this is to allow me to learn how those programs work in the first place

Hi, So using the regular MongoDB library in Ruby I have the following query to find average filesize across a set of 5001 documents: avg = 0 total = collection.count() Rails.logger.info "#{total} asset creation stats in the system" collection.find().each {|row| avg += (row["filesize"] * (1/total.to_f)) if row["filesize"]} Its pretty simple, so I'm trying to do the same using map/reduce as a learning exercise. asp.net ajax collapsible panel in ie8 problem

Anyone try this simple bit of code in an ie8 browswer and try refreshing the page, in ie8 you will get an error around getelementbyid on refresh. How to load an ImageView from a png file?

I take a picture with the camera using Intent intent = new Intent(android.provider.MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE ); startActivityForResult( intent, 22 ); When the activity completes, I write the bitmap picture out to a PNG file. java.io.FileOutputStream out = openFileOutput("myfile.png", Context.MODE_PRIVATE); bmp.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.PNG, 90, out); That goes OK, and I can see the file is created in my app private data space. I'm having difficulty when I later want to display that image using an ImageView. Can anyone suggest code to do this? If I try to create a File with path separators in, it fails. If I try to create a Uri from a name without separators, that fails. I can open the file OK using: java.io.FileInputStream in = openFileInput("myfile.png"); But that doesn't give me the Uri I need to set an image with iv.setImageURI(u) Summary: I have the picture in a png file in private app data. What's the code to set that into an ImageView? Thanks.

search engine (solr/sphinx) question

i want to make my threads content searchable with full text search engines like solr. but i wonder one thing. should i index just the thread.title, thread.body and post.body or should i index username, created date, nr of posts, views, country, region and city too that belongs to thread? i mean when an user search for a thread he will get hits returned containing thread title, 2 lines of body, which user has posted it, creation date, tags, and so on. should i index all this information too? but then it would be pretty much the whole database. or should i just index the 3 first columns i mentioned for full text search. and another question. when an user post a new thread, then i have to immidiately tell solr to add that row? if im not, how would it be searchable?

The difference between the 'Local System' account and the 'Network Service' account?

I have written a Windows service that spawns a separate process. This process creates a COM object. If the service runs under the 'Local System' account everything works fine, but if the service runs under the 'Network Service' account, the external process starts up but it fails to create the COM object. The error returned from the COM object creation is not a standard COM error (I think it's specific to the COM object being created). So, how do I determine how the two accounts, 'Local System' and 'Network Service' differ? These built-in accounts seem very mysterious and nobody seems to know much about them.

IE7: container of hidden Div displays incorrectly

There is a search box div that contains a boxhead div and a boxbody div. Inside the boxbody div, there is a searchToggle div. When the user clicks a certain link on the page, the display style property of the searchToggle div is toggled between block and none. The 2 background-images for the body of the search box are set via the css of the searchBox div and the boxbody div. In IE7, when the searchToggle div is hidden, the background-image from the searchBox div extends on the left more than it should. It shows up correctly when the display of the searchToggle div is block. Everything show up correctly, in both cases in IE8 and FF. Any ideas why this is happening? Drawing Sprites for iOS games on iPad

So, I'm quite new and confused on the way to tackle creating sprites/sprite sheets for iOS games. I own the full CS5 sweet and have been told that fireworks is the best way to go for creating these (although I don't have the slightest idea in how yet and would love some tutorials/books specifying sprite sheet creation). My thoughts directed me towards tablet drawing, as I am awful at drawing with a mouse and/or tablet without a screen on it (such as a basic wacom). I was thinking about getting an iPad, as this would provide me with an iPad for testing purposes and a tablet. Does anyone know if it's possible (or even a good idea) to draw out your sprites on the iPad. Is it possible to export them out into Fireworks and such?

I am fairly new to XML files, so what I am after may be quite obvious but I just cant find what I am looking for on the net. How to associate application with existing file types using WiX installer?

I do not want to be the default handler for .jpg, I would just like to extend the "Open with" menu with a link to my app. I see HKCR\.jpg\OpenWithList\ and HKCR\.jpg\OpenWithProgIds\ in the registry but I am not sure whether to write to these and how to do it correctly with WiX. ASP Dot Net : How to repeat HTML parts with minor differences on a page?

It's a really simple problem. I've got HTML code like this : <div> <img src="image1.jpg" alt="test1" /> </div> <div> <img src="image2.jpg" alt="test2" /> </div> <div> <img src="image3.jpg" alt="test3" /> </div> etc... The data is comming from a DB (image name, alt text). In JAVA, I would do something like : save the info in array in the back end. For the presentation I would loop through it with JSTL : <c:foeach items="${data}" var="${item}> <div> <img src="${item.image}" alt="${item.alt}" /> </div> </c:foreach> What's the best practice in ASP.net I just don't want to create a string with HTML code in it in the "code behind", it's ugly IMO.

flex setting button width to text width

I am creating a nav in flex that pulls in buttons dynamically from xml. THe problem i am having is setting the button width to the text width. currently the buttons are all the same width and if the text is larger then it just cuts off. I've tried a few ways of doing this: Setting button width to 100% On creation of the button try to set the width of the button to the text programmatically. Something like evt.target.width = evt.target.textWidth; Anyone know the correct way to do this?

Delphi Search files and directories fastest alghorithm

Hi, I'm using Delphi7 and i need a solution to a big problem.Can someone provide me a faster way for searching through files and folders than using findnext and findfirst? because i also process the data for each file/folder (creation date/author/size/etc) and it takes a lot of time...I've searched a lot under WinApi but probably I haven't see the best function in order to accomplish this. All the examples which I've found made in Delphi are using findfirst and findnext... Also, I don't want to buy components or use some free ones... Thanks in advance!
