  • Connecting to localhost with smartphone: possible?

    - by Arturas Molcanovas
I am currently developing a mobile PHP project on localhost (or, to be more precise, a locally hosted website reachable at http://azgoth/) on my desktop computer and wish to check out how the design looks on my phone's various browsers, however, since the project's actually in my computer rather than the public net, I am unable to do so. Both my Desktop computer and smartphone connect to the internet via the same router, so I wondered, would it be possible to somehow make http://azgoth/ accessible to my smartphone in a similar way that my desktop computer accesses it, without making it public for everyone to see? OS: Windows XP SP 3 Service: Apache HTTPD Router: D-Link DIR-300 FTP Directory

  • Netgear VPN can't access specific server

    - by Critologist
I have a Netgear FVS318N configured with a VPN. I'm trying to access my call recorder with the provided software from another office. I've already setup the VPN connection, and it works. I can connect and ping the remote router and a few other things on the network. However, I can't ping or connect to my call recorder. If I move outside of the office network (i.e. connect directly to the cable modem or via a mobile hotspot), I can connect and ping the call recorder just fine. The office has a simple Linksys WRT54G router and is using AT&T Uverse. The remote location is using Charter Cable with a Netgear FVS318N. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? I've setup an identical VPN previously for a different client using similar hardware and never encountered this. Thanks in advance!

  • Prepending to a multi-gigabyte file.

    - by dafmetal
What would be the most performant way to prepend a single character to a multi-gigabyte file (in my practical case, a 40GB file). There is no limitation on the implementation to do this. Meaning it can be through a tool, a shell script, a program in any programming language, ...

  • Expanding Git SHA1 information into a checkin without archiving?

    - by Tim Lin
Is there a way to include git commit hashes inside a file everytime I commit? I can only find out how to do this during archiving but I haven't been able to find out how to do this for every commit. I'm doing scientific programming with git as revision control, so this kind of functionality would be very helpful for reproducibility reasons (i.e., have the git hash automatically included in all result files and figures).

  • What do you expect of an 'Experienced Developer'?

    - by ritu
I have been programming for about 10 years: 7 years C++, 3 years MFC, 2 JSP/Servlets, and the last year .NET (since there was some overlap the total won't add up). The problem is now that I am looking for a new job, I don't know what the latest thing is in C++ AND Java AND .NET AND MFC and somehow at interviews I am expected to KNOW everything about these topics because I have them listed on my resume. Any suggestions?

  • What's the best way to mix Ruby and other languages? (Especially C++)

    - by Andy
Hi, I'm learning Ruby, and I'm starting to play with building extensions in C. I have Programming Ruby The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide and so I can follow that for the basic nuts and bolts. What I was wondering is if there already existed some nifty frameworks/whatever to help interoperability between Ruby and other languages, with C++ being the most important for me. I've tried googling, but the results focus on language comparisons, rather than language interoperability. TIA, Andy

  • fread and fwrite are not recommended for use with structured data

    - by forest58
A book beginning linux programming 3ed says "Note that fread and fwrite are not recommended for use with structured data.Part of the problem is that files written with fwrite are potentially nonportable between different machines." What does that mean exactly? what calls should I use if I want to write a portable structured data reader or writer? direct system calls?

  • Wi-fi signal with keeping the internet cable

    - by daGrevis
So the situation is that I have Ethernet cable which provides internet to my computer. Thing I want is to have wi-fi connection in my house and Ethernet cable (like I have before) to use for my PC. I will use wi-fi for my laptop and mobile phone. I think I need router for that and I'm looking at Asus RT-N16 (suggested in Coding Horror) for it, but I am not sure. Is it the right thing for me and I will be able to get wi-fi signal and keep the Ethernet cable? I guess the system will be that current cable goes into router, router provides wi-fi signal and gives back new cable... or something like that. Thanks in any advice! And sorry if topic isn't in right site.

  • If as assert fails, is there a bug?

    - by RichAmberale
I've always followed the logic: if assert fails, then there is a bug. Root cause could either be: Assert itself is invalid (bug) There is a programming error (bug) (no other options) I.E. Are there any other conclusions one could come to? Are there cases where an assert would fail and there is no bug?

  • New interesting languages

    - by wvd
Hello all, I've been programming for 4 years now and I feel it's time for a new language. I've been doing Python, Java and some C++/Erlang/Haskell along those 4 years but I'm looking for a new language. I'm mainly looking for one which I could use later when I'm getting hired, but it also needs to be relatively new. Any ideas? Thanks, William van Doorn
