    When I previously asked what's responsible for slow software, a few answers I've received suggested it was a social and management problem: This isn't a technical problem, it's a marketing and management problem.... Utimately, the product mangers are responsible to write the specs for what the user is supposed to get. Lots of things can go wrong: The product manager fails to put button response in the spec ... The QA folks do a mediocre job of testing against the spec ... if the product management and QA staff are all asleep at the wheel, we programmers can't make up for that. —Bob Murphy People work on good-size apps. As they work, performance problems creep in, just like bugs. The difference is - bugs are "bad" - they cry out "find me, and fix me". Performance problems just sit there and get worse. Programmers often think "Well, my code wouldn't have a performance problem. Rather, management needs to buy me a newer/bigger/faster machine."   • Softpedia published some of my open source projects — how to react?

    (FYI: I've just moved this question over from Stackoverflow on recommendation.) I just received a few emails, informing me that softpedia.com has added some of my "products" to their "database of scripts, code snippets and web applications". My products are in this case some smaller open source projects, which I have hosted and published on github. Now I'm wondering how to react to this. This site is indirectly making money of my free work through ads on three pages before the actual download. They also seem to "invent" version numbers and I can't find out if they're hosting the latest or all versions of my projects. — I can see how this could lead to problems in the future, since I don't control what's "the latest" everywhere. On the other hand I don't mind some extra publicity. I want as many people as possible to know about the projects, use them, fork them and hopefully improve them. The projects in questions are really fairly small, but this might not be the case in the future for me and/or other people reading this question. I'm sure that this must have happened to others around here. What's your opinion? Should I try to get the downloads removed? Update 1 I've requested the removal and mentioned that I don't feel that Softpedia can provide the right environment for this kind of project. Their team got back to me instantly with a friendly email saying, that they'll remove the links for now: If you are worried that your projects won't be updated, then I must tell you that I have them bookmarked in my RSS reader, so any version changes will be forwarded to me when needed. So I promise I'll keep your script up to date as soon as I see an update in the repository. I have to say, that I appreciate this kind of reaction quite a lot and so I sent them another email, describing in more detail what I'm worried about and what bothers me. I also stated, that I'm aware that my license clearly permits them to host the projects in any case, but that I'd be even happy if they would host the projects as long as they could convince me of a few details and maybe make some small changes to the way the projects are represented. — Let's see where this goes. Update 2 After discussing with their contact and requesting some changes regarding display of version (they had given the possibility to do so) and authorship they put the projects back up on their site. All in all a positive and definitely interesting experience.

    Possible Duplicate: How is software deployed via Active Directory? I have trying to deploy a programs, mapped network drives and taks schedule job. I didn't manage to start a script on log on PC until I did it in Default Domain Policy. But when I did that I have installed programs on my server too. And mapped network drives, etc. So I don't know how to manage to do all of that but not to install anything on server over GPO. I still didn't manage to deploy a schedule task job on clients. I manage to put it on server bit not on clients. I need that schedule task because I need to update software on clients every week. I can't manual update flash player, adobe reader, firefox, etc on clients. And People useing client PC even doesn't know how to do it if they have abillity. Clients doesn't have admin rights.

  • How to clear the list of "Notification Area Icons" in Windows 7?

    I can't seem to find a way to clear the list of "Notification Area Icons" in Windows 7. Unfortunately I had installed a download manager (GetRight) which by default creates a tray icon for each download. I quickly disabled this but still have a ton of entries in that menu and it's annoying. I found an article that had me navigate to this key in the registry... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify delete IconStreams and PastIconStreams, then restart, but it did not clear the list. Any ideas on this one?

    If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. The audio in the video is not being played when you try to play the video. But the .flv works fine. I have also enabled Intel(R) speedstep feature in my processor(Pentium Dual core E5200) to decrease the power consumed by the processor with the help of Granola software. What might be the reason for the audio less video converter by xvideo service thief? Could it be the enabling of intel(R) speedstep? Because the software works fine when its not enabled. Is this possible?That the output some applications can be altered when enabling this processor feature?

    I have a Logitect Quick Cam Pro 9000 that I want to install on my Windows 7 installation. The user manual specifies that I have to install the software before I install the camera. But my experience is that software from hardware vendors tend to decrease computer performance, so I was wondering if this camera will work by only plugging it in and letting Windows 7 find and install the drivers for it. I could've just tried installing it of course, but again, hardware vendors are notorius for fucking up things, and I wouldn't want to make it impossible to install the camera by doing things in the wrong order, hence the question here on SuperUser because I assume somebody is more knowledgeable than me on this subject.

    As we have some PC's still running Windows 2000 and this is beyond our control we use IE 6 so we can keep the IE platform standard. Recently on some XP and Win2000 PCs IE has been crashing with the Encountered a Problem and Needs to close do you want to send a message to Microsoft error when entering some sites. This happens even after a format reinstall with minimal software load (Office 2000, some avaya software, kaspersky, tapiex.dll). The module pointed to in the error report is ntl.dll. There are lots of reports over the net of the problem but has anyone resolved this issue? (Latest IE6 updates are installed). Also please note there were no 3rd party IE addons, spyware, viruses or adware Hope someone can help.

We have some software that will copy the MSI to the remote PC and run it with any specified parameters. The software needs you to import the license key file and tell it where the server is.
