• A special user does not appear in Windows login screen

  In the list of users (under Local Users and Groups in my Windows 7) I have an ASPNET user (its description says "Account used for running the ASP.NET worker process (aspnet_wp.exe)" and its full name is "ASP.NET Machine Account") The thing is this user does not appear in Windows login screen. What I have found: It is not a "Built-in security pricipal" user It belongs only to Users group I don't have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts key in my registry In every sense I can see that it is a normal user yet it does not appear in login screen. Now the questions are: What does make it special? How can I create a user like this?

• How do you backup your localhost ?

  i have method to backup my work on localhost based on week basis. i use multipe dos command and save in on a bat file. i use command such as copy and xcopy and save my localhost to another place. After my server grow larger, i think it take too much space. So tehre is a way to solve this problem ? maybe a software that can track changes on our php code or another method to preserve your code when thing go bad ? EDIT : I use windows xp sp2, on XAMPP Apache PHP 5.2.1 the localhost refer to my laptop. i install the localhost server here

• Numerous Unexpected Obstacles Ruining any Project Plans

  I am working as software developer and struggling with this problem time and time again for almost thirteen years. There seems not to be any way out of the following problem. And it happens with small projects as well. For example, I plan to write an extension for Microsoft Visual Studio. I dowload learning materials, get some book on the topic and allocate time for learning and development. However, during the development, many seemingly trivial problems arise, for example: Why the script refuses to delete the file? Why Visual Studio does not register the extension? (after two days) OK, it registers it, but now it got broken. How to fix it? each of these "small" obstacles usually take 1-5 days to resolve and the project finally consumes several times more man-hours than planned. Maybe it happens only because I am working on Microsoft platform and many of their Frameworks and architectures are bit confusing and badly documented. I would like to have most problems resolved by finding answer in a book or official documentation (MSDN), but the only answer I usually find is on some weird forum or personal blog googled after desperately searching for any relevant information on the topic. Do you have the same struggles? Do you have techniques on how to prevent these problems? I was thinking of simply multiplying projected time for a given project by some factor, but this does not help. Some projects get done briskly and some take months and the guiding factor here are these small "glitches" which take programmers whole weeks to resolve. I have to admit that lots of these obstacles demoralizes me and drains me of focus and joy of work (who likes to get back to work when he have to resolve some stupid registry problem or weird framework bug instead of doing creative work?) After the project is finally done, I am feeling like dying from thousand cuts.

I have 3 gmail accounts & 1 yahoo account. In windows, I use Microsoft outlook or microsoft outlook express. But In mac is there any inbuilt software for it ? If not, is that any freely available mail client for mac osx ? ----------------------- 2 ---------------------------- One more thing, My system administrators has banned regular gmail & yahoo sites. Means I can't use gmail or yahoo site for mailing. Ok. I don't want to break my office rules - but what about my mails on gmail & yahoo, they are really very important for me. Means that - I just want to access incoming mails nothing more than that.

• GPLv2 - Multiple AI chess engines to bypass GPL

  I have gone through a number of GPL-related questions, the most recent being this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3248823/legal-question-about-the-gpl-license-net-dlls/3249001#3249001 I'm trying to see how this would work, so bear with me. I have a simple GUI interface for a game of Chess. It essentially can send/receive commands to/from an external chess engine (ie: Tong, Fruit, etc). The application/GUI is similar in nature to XBoard ( http://www.gnu.org/software/xboard/ ), but was independently designed. After going through a number of threads on this topic, it seems that the FSF considers dynamically linking against a GPLv2 library as a derivative work, and that by doing so, the GPLv2 extends to my proprietary code, and I must release the source to my entire project. Other legal precedents indicate the opposite, and that dynamic linking doesn't cause the "viral" effect of the GPL to propagate to my proprietary code. Since there is no official consensus that can give a "hard-and-fast" answer to the dynamic linking question, would this be an acceptable alternative: I build my chess GUI so that it sends/receives the chess engine AI logic as text commands from an external interface library that I write The interface library I wrote itself is then released under the GPL The interface library is only used to communicate via a generic text pipe to external command-line chess engines The chess engine itself would be built as a command-line utility rather than as a library of any sort, and just sends strings in the Universal Chess Interface of Chess Engine Communication Protocol ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Engine_Communication_Protocol ) format. The one "gotcha" is that the interface library should not be specific to one single GPL'ed chess engine, otherwise the entire GUI would be "entirely dependent" on it. So, I just make my interface library so that it is able to connect to any command-line chess engine that uses a specific format, rather than just one unique engine. I could then include pre-built command-line-app versions of any of the chess engines I'm using. Would that sort of approach allow me to do the following: NOT release the source for my UI Release the source of the interface library I built (if necessary) Use one or more chess engines and bundle them as external command-line utilities that ship with a binary version of my UI Thank you.

  I am actually a software developer, do have a fair amount of linux experience as a user though since 1997. I am normally on stackoverflow.com, please excuse me if this question isn't appropriate here. I am working on a web project. We send out emails. I work locally on a linux box. When coding I use my local mailboxes to check what's been sent. Emails sent out to valid email addresses are not arriving at my official mailbox; they might be stopped by the provider's mail servers (gmail, yahoo). Now, we are sending out HTML mails too. I need to check how they look like. Is there a GUI frontend to the standard linux BSD mailbox? Or should I install some IMAP/POP server for this? Will such server get the emails sent to username@localhost ? Thanks for any suggestion

This is not the single problem happen to me.   In my case I use .net connector 6.7.4.0 and let’s see what happen to me after I start using it. 6.7.4.0 install register the mysql module in machine.config and it’s broke every software you haven’t deployed with Mysql.   Suppose for example I just create a website ( in webmatrix 3) put my index.cshtml and now see what it preview for me. This means I need to add the mysql.Web even I don’t use any kind of database. I need to do every asp.net mvc project no matter they use mysql. it’s problematic when we use older .net  mysql connector in some of my project.   If you have trouble like this simply use nuget and say Bye bye to this trouble.

• When Installing Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 can I use a common directory for Oracle Base?

  I am trying to install Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit. To some this might not be rocket science but I can't understand what the options under the install screen "Specify Home Details" mean. The defaults given suggest that I use Oracle Base and install software under my own account name. It also suggests that each user should have a separate Oracle Base. This seems counter intuitive to me. I am doing a server install after all. All I want to use the installation for is to connect to an Oracle Database from Reporting Services. Can I safely ignore this and just accept the defaults? What are the implications if I change the location to a common directory?

• User Permissions: Daemon and User

  Hello: I often run into this issue on Linux, and I'd love to know the proper way of solving it. Say I have a daemon running. In my example, I'll use LigHTTPD, a webserver. Some software, like Wordpress, enjoys having read/write access to files for updating applications via a web interface, which I think is quite handy. At the same time, I enjoy being able to hack on my files using vim, using my local user account, 'eddie'. Herein lies the rub. Either I chown everything to lighttpd or eddie and a shared group between them both, and chmod it 660, or perpetually sudo to edit the damned things. The former isn't a bad solution, until I create a new file in which case I have to remember to chmod it appropriately, or create some hack like a cron job that chmods for me. Is there an easier way of doing this? Have I overlooked something? Cheers, -e-

  i have an HP dm3t notebook which normally comes with windows 7. after some time i figured out how to install Windows XP on it. but now i am facing a problem that the brightess controls dont work so i am unable to change the brightess. the strange thing is that all the other buttons (sound volume, mute, sleep , etc... ) works but not the 2 brightess controls. i already downloaded the "HP Quick Launch Buttons" so i am asking about suggesitions how can i enable these two buttons in windows XP or even if i can change the brightess using some kind of software. thanks

• Layer 2 topology discovery

  I have been given a network (it is a LAN) comprised of switches and I need to discover the topology of that. (There may be Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs) in the network as well.) I have done a lot of search on layer 2 topology discovery and I have seen many articles talking about using SNMP MIBs or LLDP (I do not know which one is better or more practical, but all devices in my network support SNMP). But my problem is that I cannot find "the software to install and run" to actually see the topology map. I would really appreciate if someone could send me the website where I can download the code and use it. I have also found a lot of tools available online such as OpenNMS, Nagios, The Dude, LANsurveyor, SNMPwalk, and many more... But I cannot figure out which one is the best to pick. To summarize: what is the easiest simplest way to discover the layer 2 network topology?

  I'm running the following setup: Xbox 360 is hooked up to my (PC) screen via HDMI/DVI converter. Because the Xbox has no dedicated sound output, except for optical S/PIDF, I'm also using the AV/RCA output, namely just the audio, which is connected to an old stereo, which is then connected to my PCs line-in. I'm now experiencing a some of noise. I'm using one of the standard "Realtek High Definition Audio" cards, which doesn't seem to offer this kind of functionality. Is there a software that will playback audio right off a device while running filters on it? It doesn't have to create a device on its own, I just want to listen to it.   Hi All, I am very new to the VMware world. We have VMWare vCenter 4 in the production environment but we have created multiple VLAN through Cisco Switch. I want know, how I can create an isolated test environment for software testing purpose only, so anything will happen in that test vLan will not make trouble in the production environment. "Host-only networking" is the solution or there is a better way to achieve this result? My requirements A. Hosts should be able to access Internet and a Network Share drive but not Production network B. Hosts should connect each other inside the Virtual LAN C. I should be able to take automatic or periodic backup or snapshoot and deploy snapshot when necessary. Whatever your answer is, please give me steps, how to do, if possible. • Can't download updates for reinstalled Office 2000 on WinXP OS "expected version not found" error message

  I replaced HD and reinstalled WinXP Pro and successfully downloaded all of the service packs and security updates. I've reinstalled my licensed version of Office 2000 (upgrade version from Office 97). The software installs and is functional; but when trying to install updates SR-1 or SR-1a or any individual security update I get error message "expected version of product not found". Microsoft no longer provides support for this legacy version of office. I can't find any support documents in Microsoft's database that addresses this issue. This is my sister's computer and I've already come out-of-pocket $100 for hardware (not counting the $$hours of labor). She only uses MS Word for minimal correspondence. No desire to spend $100+ for new version of Office. I would greatly appreciate any suggested fixes for this problem.

• Create a Shortcut To Group Policy Editor in Windows 7

  If you’re a system administrator and find yourself making changes in Group Policy Editor, you might want to make a shortcut to it. Here we look at creating a shortcut, pinning it to the Taskbar, and adding it to Control Panel. Note: Local Group Policy Editor is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Typing gpedit.msc into the search box in the Start menu to access Group Policy Editor can get old fast. To create a shortcut, right-click on the desktop and select New \ Shortcut. Next type or copy the following path into the location field and click Next. c:\windows\system32\gpedit.msc Then give your shortcut a name…something like Group Policy, or whatever you want it to be and click Finish. Now you have your Group Policy shortcut… If you want it on the Taskbar just drag it there to pin it.   We have a specific accounting and production software, called 1C, which uses single user connection to the MS SQL 2008 R2 database. And there are about 500 users connecting to 1C server to perform their tasks. 1C and SQL 2008 are on separate servers. How to configure MS SQL 2008 R2 to effectively use parallelization in this configuration? We have 24 cores, and only one is loaded at 100% at MS SQL 2008 R2 server. • Copy Excel Formatting the Easy Way with Format Painter

  The Format Painter in Excel makes it easy to copy the formatting of a cell and apply it to another. With just a few clicks you can reproduce formatting such as fonts, alignment, text size, border, and background color. On any Excel worksheet, click on the cell with the formatting you’d like to copy.  You will see dashed lines around the selected cell. Then select the Home tab and click on the Format Painter.   You’ll see your cursor now includes a paintbrush graphic. Move to the cell where you’d like to apply the formatting and click on it. Your target cell will now have the new formatting.   If you double-clicking on Format Painter you can then click on multiple individual files to which to apply the format. Or, you can click and drag across a group of cells. When you are finished applying formats, click on Format Painter again, or on the Esc key, to turn it off. The Format Painter is a very simple, but extremely useful and time saving tool when creating complex worksheets. • Where are those crapware desktop icons located?

  My new Acer Aspire One netbook came pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter and lots of other promotional software. Some of them (like Norton and McAfee) I uninstalled immediately. Others (like the Barnes & Notble Desktop Reader and the Times Reader) I would like to keep until I see whether they can be useful). Regardless, I would like to remove their desktop icons (making them accessible through the Start menu only), in such a way that when I add another user account, these desktop icons will not appear on that user's desktop. But when I checked my desktop folder C:\Users\an00b\Desktop I noticed that it's empty! So my desktop's folder is empty, but the icons are still visible on the Desktop. How is this possible?   I am trying to establish a IPSEC vpn, between an office DSL connection and a single virtual machine. I have done hub-spoke stuff before with cisco and fortinet routers, never hardware <-- software. Fortigate 60B - 10.20.1.1/24 Windows Server 2008 r2 Installed On VM I have seen some guides, to do this with juniper screenos (guide uses first release of 2008, they introduced windows firewall with advanced security), but none using fortinet equipment. Anyone ever been successful? Or should I install RAS/PPTP, so I can dial in?

• Users in the field and Time Machine

  We have several users in the field with MacBooks. Because they're not always on the network, they save files locally to their notebooks. Normally I back things up by making quick copies to other media, but with the Macs they have the option to run Time Machine (and the way OS X is designed, they're heavily encouraged to use it.) Question; for maintaining Macs and data, how reliable and thorough is Time Machine for backup/restoration? Does it just back up the user's home directory, or can it restore the Mac if, for example, the drive fails? And are there options for "securing" the data like corporate backup software for Windows does, to encrypt the data on the time machine drive?

• Free MP3 merge for Mac OS X

  Hi, I need to merge several MP3 tracks into one, I use Mac OS X 10.5. I want to convert all my Harry Potter CDs to my iPod, but not every minute a new track (as it is on the CDs) but chapterwise. Where can I get a free software? Help, please! (I've already tried: Jfuse, but after I had merged a few chapters it said I had to buy it; emicsoft VOB Converter for Mac; File Stitcher; but since they all were shareware, for free they would only let me merge 2 files at once (that would take me days) or half of each file which is useless of course; iTunes advanced settings ("join CD tracks") when importing the CDs, but it would let me only join the complete CD, not chapters...) (Sorry for my English, hope you could understand what I wanted to say)
