• Is Carnegie Mellon (CMU) a Javaschool? Are any prominent universities in the US javaschools? [on hold]

  I'm guessing CMU would teach C and other unmanaged languages (their course listing shows Principles of Functional Programming as a required course for a BSCS), but it's hard to tell from course listings. I'm looking into applying there, where I have an OK chance of getting in , as well as some other mid-to high tier CS schools. I'm wondering how you can tell if a school mainly teaches Java or goes into C/C++. Everyone says (and I agree, from my current programming knowledge) that learning Java in college exclusively is a bad idea, so I'm hoping to avoid ending up at a 'Javaschool.'

• Given two sets of DNA, what does it take to computationally "grow" that person from a fertilised egg and see what they become? [closed]

  My question is essentially entirely in the title, but let me add some points to prevent some "why on earth would you want to do that" sort of answers: This is more of a mind experiment than an attempt to implement real software. For fun. Don't worry about computational speed or the number of available memory bytes. Computers get faster and better all of the time. Imagine we have two data files: Mother.dna and Father.dna. What else would be required? (Bonus point for someone who tells me approx how many GB each file will be, and if the size of the files are exactly the same number of bytes for everyone alive on Earth!) There would ideally need to be a way to see what the egg becomes as it becomes a human adult. If you fancy, feel free to outline the design. I am initially thinking that there'd need to be some sort of volumetric voxel-based 3D environment for simulation purposes.

• To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• How can I get Gnome3 to remember my session?

  I am running Gnome3, but I had the same problem with Unity, on Ubuntu 12.04. I have a fairly elaborate setup I enjoy using day-to-day. A LibreOffice spreadsheet with everyone's extension numbers; a window with reference data I use regularly; two mulit-tabbed Konsole/Terminal windows with several remote systems sessions, firefox with a set of open tabs, and so on. But whenever I log out, when I return, I must set up everything from scratch. I remember the good 'ol days, when I rebooted, I'd re-log in, and all my windows came back up in the same places as they were when I logged out, and my Konsole/Term would come up with the same remote logins as before.... I'd have to re -setup some of my programs, but that's better than having to move every win into place, and resize them, etc. How do I get this functionality back?

• Rebooting yes, Shutdown no

  Hello everyone and thanks in advance. I am new in Ubuntu and have the 12.04 version dual boot with Windows XP. I have the following problem. The laptop can reboot using the reboot option from the menu but it cannot shut down. It starts shutting down, the dots appear but then it freezes and does not turn off. Sometimes it shuts down normally (usually just after an update) but then it loses that capability again. Some strange things, I noticed that when the dots freeze, the USB mouse loses power, BUT the usb-powered cooling pad continues to work The only Fn shortcuts that work all the time are the Volume up, down and mute, BUT sometimes when the other Fn combinations (screen-off etc) work the computer shuts down normally I searched a lot on my own, please help.

• Legality of using/embedding MP3s?

  I am working on a language learning startup. I think that one of the best ways to study is through music. For that purpose I would like to include MP3s on the website, together with related study tools such as appropriate lyrics. Because I want to avoid dead links I would like to host the MP3s directly on my server and stream them to the users. Doing this isn't exactly legal since everyone could download the MP3s. But what if, before accessing a specific song, I displayed a message asking "Do you legally own this song in CD/MP3/... format?" and only if the user clicks "yes" he is allowed to continue and listen. Isn't this how, for example, YouTube gets around legal problems? Does anybody have insight on this? Thank you!

• Continuing Education as a Part of Your Job [closed]

  I work as a programmer for a mid-sized company (about 500 employees) in the medical industry. Before that I worked at a custom software development/consulting company. At both companies programmers were never officially given time to continue their education through taking classes, reading books or blogs, or doing research relevant to the job. At the software development company we were offered some money to pay for a class, but not offered any time off of work to take the class. I have been wondering, do most employers of programmers give time off of work to take a class, read a book, or do job related research? By time off of work I just mean some period of time where you can stop development; it does not have to mean leaving the office. I would be grateful to hear about everyone's experience with this.

• Maya and Game Engines (i.e. Environment Testing)

  What does it mean if I'm designing an environment and I want to test it in the game engine, to see what its like to "run" [or fly] around my environment? I heard an instructor say that exact thing in a Maya training video and I'd like to know more about "How Game Engines and Maya are related to each other." He stated this would be done to see how things look in "size" (e.g. I assume he meant: 'How big is the cathedral, bridge, wall, building, etc.'). I've tried to research such information but it's too complicated, and detailed. I just want a simplistic response to my query. Thanks to everyone willing to help and not criticize my question.

• What Languages are mostly understood "intuitively" and could benefit from a more formal learning approach?

  In a presentation, i stumbled upon the Statement "JavaScript is a Language everybody uses, yet nearly noone seems to find it neccessary to learn how it works". And indeed, not many of the programmers i know could explain javascript's prototype concept, or why functions need to be 'bound' to this. CSS seems to be another example of this behaviour: everyone knows how to put a 'class' to an element, and to write a style .myclass { ... }, but only a few even know of margin-collapse. My question is: are there more of those languages, technologies, concepts, that are so prevalent that we dont even notice them as something worth learning while we use them?

As extra info: We are a team of 6 developpers in one room, with sales and suits constantly coming over to ask and tell us things we must and mustn't do. This actions drop down I would like to have an action to 'Enable Editing'. Upon clicking to enable editing, I would like a PHP variable modified from 'EnableEditing = false' to 'EnableEditing = true'. Why I would like to use PHP maybe questionable, here is why I would like to use PHP under my understanding to clarify; Sections on my page will show to different administrators depending on their level. Upon enabling editing mode, certain contents will then dynamically. <?php if ($_SESSION['user_level_status'] < 2) { if ($editing = enabled) { show this } else { show this } } ?> Something similar to this, I'm new at PHP so this may look incorrect. • access to site owner not working

  I made a website it works for everyone except for the site owner, who cannot access the site. He gets a server could not be found error. I went to his house and the issue occurs for all of his devices (PC, laptop, iPhone using WiFi) when I turn WiFi off the iPhone it works. So I thought it was a problem on his router so I reset is router to default factory settings but it still does not work, I have flushed his DNS cache and his browser cache. But nothing seems to help. He cannot even PING the server using the domain name. However when he uses the IP address he can see the site fine. I looked in cpanel for an blocked IP addresses but cannot see anything. What could be stopping just him from accessing the site via domainname and not the IP address? Site details are: PHP, osCommerce it is hosted by site5 on my reseller account.

• Why was Tannenbaum wrong in the Tannenbaum-Torvalds debates?

  I was recently assigned reading from the Tannenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tannenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a 1 year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tannenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?

  Hello everyone. I am working on website and I am trying to make it fast as much as possible - especially the small things that can make my site a little bit quicker. So, my to my question - I got loop that run 5 times and in each time it echo something, If I'll make variable and the loop will add the text I want to echo into the variable and just in the end I'll echo the variable - will it be faster? loop 1 (with the echo inside the loop) for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { echo "test"; } loop 2 (with the echo outside [when the loop finish]) $echostr = ""; for ($i = 0;$i < 5;$i++) { $echostr .= "test"; } echo $echostr; I know that loop 2 will increase a bit the file size and therefore the user will have to download more bytes but If I got huge loop will it be better to use second loop or not?   Hello everyone. I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu is my first distribution. I have chosen Ubuntu because I want to learn more about Linux. I'm under time constraints and need to setup a server as soon as possible. I have Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server setup via VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro. I installed everything I need on the server edition, but it feels way over my head. I have no experience with CLI. Can I just use Ubuntu Desktop to run my Web server for the time being while I learn CLI? I basically need to run Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Python and Django. Should I be using MAMP? Thanks.
