  • Handling Backups for Rapid Resilience

    The backup and restore system in SQL Server hasn't changed a great deal over the years despite a huge growth in the typical size of databases. When disaster strikes, and an important service is taken offline while a restore is performed, there is often time to reflect on whether it might be possible to design databases for a more rapid recovery of the most critical parts of a database application. • When should I decline to make a requested change?

    - by reuscam
    I work on the software side of a company that provides custom hardware with software running on top of it. Often times the hardware is not engineered well. In those cases, I am often asked first to troubleshoot the problem - of course the symptom is always "your software crashed" or something along those lines. Just recently we had another one of these incidents where power on a USB line is not reliable, and it causes a USB device to fail. This causes a usability problem in one of our applications. I have been asked by upper management to handle this better - continually monitor the USB device, and if it disappears, then reboot, or try to reset it. Doing either of these is not guaranteed to fix anything. Ultimately, the real fix is to correct the reliability of the device from the hardware side. I could improve performance, but not to 100%, and of course I would be using my already limited time to bloat code and add yet another device monitoring thread. So with all that said, how do I make a good decision about when to say that this needs to be a hardware fix, and only a hardware fix? Can I approach this quantitatively, and come up with some sort of definitive yes/no test? I'm sure its not that easy.

  • I overwrote a large file with a blank one on a linux server. Can I recover the existing file?

    - by user39234
    I came back to my machine, tried saving a file over ssh onto my linux server (CentOS). It failed. I wasn't interested in keeping any changes I had made so I closed my editor and reopened the file (over ssh). The save attempt wiped the file. I have made loads of changes to it since I last uploaded to revision control. Seeing as it has just wiped the file I assume the data is still there. It's just a text file (php), is there any way of recovering it?

  • I just deleted my backup file! How do I save it?

    - by Sammy
    I just accidentally deleted a backup file that I need to restore my system. It's an Acronis True Image TIB file. It was stored at H:\My backups and the name of the file was File_backup_2012-10-18.tib. I did a quick scan with Recuva 1.43.623 and it found the file using the recovery wizard, but it was unable to recover it. The "state" of the file is "unrecoverable". So the resulting file is 0 byte. I am trying to do a deep scan with Recuva right now but it takes a lot of time. If it should fail, what other recovery option do I have? Is there any other good file recovery software that's free to use for home users? I do have a second copy of the whole system partition, but I needed this file backup copy because it is more up to date. That's the file, right there! But why is Recuva unable to recover it?

  • unable to delete file (jpeg)

    - by ile
    I implemented helper for showing thumbnails from here Next to thumbnail, there is delete link which calls this controller // // HTTP POST: /Photo/Delete/1 [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Delete(int id, string confirmButton) { var path = "~/Uploads/Photos/"; Photo photo = photoRepository.GetPhoto(id); if (photo == null) return View("NotFound"); FileInfo TheFile = new FileInfo(Server.MapPath(path + photo.PhotoID + ".jpg")); if (TheFile.Exists) { photoRepository.Delete(photo); photoRepository.Save(); TheFile.Delete(); } else return View("NotFound"); return View(); } If I disable showing thumbnails then the file is deleted. Otherwise it sends error: System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file 'C:\Documents and Settings\ilija\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\CMS\CMS\Uploads\Photos\26.jpg' because it is being used by another process. I also don't know if my file delete function is properly written. Searching on the net, I see everyone uses File.Delete(TheFile);, which i'm unable to use and I use TheFile.Delete(); For File.Delete(TheFile); i get following error: Error 1 'System.Web.Mvc.Controller.File(string, string, string)' is a 'method', which is not valid in the given context C:\Documents and Settings\ilija\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\CMS\CMS\Controllers\PhotoController.cs 109 17 CMS Am I missing something here? • Looking for a web based, embeddable file manager

    - by Kristi H.
    I'm looking for a web based, embeddable file manager. I haven't found anything suitable through Google or the Stack Overflow archives. Does anyone know of a file manager that meets the following criteria? The file manager must… …be embeddable (e.g. Flash or a Java applet) …run from my server (no storing uploads in a remote location) …be licensed for business use (fees are okay) …let me disable uploads. Users shouldn't be able to upload files, only download them …allow me to tag files and/or place them in folders …let me disable authentication or handle it from the backend. My app already has a login system and I don't want to make users log in twice …allow users to select and download multiple files …have an attractive interface The file manager should… …have an external config file …display thumbnail previews for files …be skinnable …be actively developed or at least actively maintained Thanks for your help. I need a sophisticated file manager and I'd like to avoid writing it from scratch.

  • How to highlight the new created file in JTree

    - by newbie123
    I want to make it like when I click a button, it will create a new file. Then the jTree will highlight the new file. Below are my code. Currently I create new file, i will show the new file but no highlight the file. class FileTreeModel implements TreeModel { private FileNode root; public FileTreeModel(String directory) { root = new FileNode(directory); } public Object getRoot() { return root; } public Object getChild(Object parent, int index) { FileNode parentNode = (FileNode) parent; return new FileNode(parentNode, parentNode.listFiles()[index].getName()); } public int getChildCount(Object parent) { FileNode parentNode = (FileNode) parent; if (parent == null || !parentNode.isDirectory() || parentNode.listFiles() == null) { return 0; } return parentNode.listFiles().length; } public boolean isLeaf(Object node) { return (getChildCount(node) == 0); } public int getIndexOfChild(Object parent, Object child) { FileNode parentNode = (FileNode) parent; FileNode childNode = (FileNode) child; return Arrays.asList(parentNode.list()).indexOf(childNode.getName()); } public void valueForPathChanged(TreePath path, Object newValue) { } public void addTreeModelListener(TreeModelListener l) { } public void removeTreeModelListener(TreeModelListener l) { } } class FileNode extends java.io.File { public FileNode(String directory) { super(directory); } public FileNode(FileNode parent, String child) { super(parent, child); } @Override public String toString() { return getName(); } } jTree = new JTree(); jTree.setBounds(new Rectangle(164, 66, 180, 421)); jTree.setBackground(SystemColor.inactiveCaptionBorder); jTree.setBorder(BorderFactory.createTitledBorder(null, "", TitledBorder.LEADING, TitledBorder.TOP, new Font("Arial", Font.BOLD, 12), new Color(0, 0, 0))); FileTreeModel model = new FileTreeModel(root); jTree.setRootVisible(false); jTree.setModel(model); expandAll(jTree); public void expandAll(JTree tree) { int row = 0; while (row < tree.getRowCount()) { tree.expandRow(row); row++; } }

  • c++ File input/output

    - by Myx
    Hi: I am trying to read from a file using fgets and sscanf. In my file, I have characters on each line of the while which I wish to put into a vector. So far, I have the following: FILE *fp; fp = fopen(filename, "r"); if(!fp) { fprintf(stderr, "Unable to open file %s\n", filename); return 0; } // Read file int line_count = 0; char buffer[1024]; while(fgets(buffer, 1023, fp)) { // Increment line counter line_count++; char *bufferp = buffer; ... while(*bufferp != '\n') { char *tmp; if(sscanf(bufferp, "%c", tmp) != 1) { fprintf(stderr, "Syntax error reading axiom on " "line %d in file %s\n", line_count, filename); return 0; } axiom.push_back(tmp); printf("put %s in axiom vector\n", axiom[axiom.size()-1]); // increment buffer pointer bufferp++; } } my axiom vector is defined as vector<char *> axiom;. When I run my program, I get a seg fault. It happens when I do the sscanf. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

  • Passing a Batch File an Argument Containing a Quote Containing a Space

    - by Synetech inc.
    Hi, On many occasions I have dealt with passing batch files arguments with spaces, quotes, percents, and slashes and all sorts of combinations of them. Usually I managed to figure out how to accomplish what I want, but this time I am stuck. I have tried a couple of hundred combinations now and my head is starting to hurt. I’ve reduced the problem quite nicely. It’s a simple requirement: pass a double-quoted space from one batch file to another. That is, one batch file should pass some string X to another so that the the second one echos " ". I just can’t figure out what X should be. Here is a minimal batch file that demonstrates and attempt that does not work. (This BAT file takes the place of both by calling itself.) ::Goal is to print: ::" " ::That is, to pass a quoted space from a BAT file to a BAT file if not (%1)==() goto recurse %0 "" "" :recurse echo %1 pause It does not work. I’ve tried using "\" \"", """ """, """" """", "\"" "\"", ""\" \""", "^" ^"", ^"" "^", and so on. Either they print double double-quotes, lose everything after the space, or something else (that is wrong). Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Read whole ASCII file into C++ std::string

    - by Arrieta
    Hello, I need to read a whole file into memory and place it in a C++ std::string. If I were to read it into a char, the answer would be very simple: std::ifstream t; int lenght; t.open("file.txt", "r"); // open input file t.seekg(0, std::ios::end); // go to the end length = t.tellg(); // report location (this is the lenght) t.seekg(0, std::ios::beg); // go back to the beginning buffer = new char[length]; // allocate memory for a buffer of appropriate dimension t.read(buffer, length); // read the whole file into the buffer t.close(); // close file handle // ... do stuff with buffer here ... Now, I want to do the exact same thing, but using a std::string instead of a char. I want to avoid loops, i. e., I don't want to: std::ifstream t; t.open("file.txt", "r"); std::string buffer; std::string line; while(t){ std::getline(t, line); // ... append line to buffer and go on } t.close() any ideas?

  • basic file input using C

    - by user1781966
    So im working on learning how to do file I/O, but the book I'm using is terrible at teaching how to receive input from a file. Below is is their example of how to receive input from a file, but it doesn't work. I have copied it word for word, and it should loop through a list of names until it reaches the end of the file( or so they say in the book), but it doesn't. In fact if I leave the while loop in there, it doesn't print anything. #include <stdio.h> #include <conio.h> int main() { char name[10]; FILE*pRead; pRead=fopen("test.txt", "r"); if (pRead==NULL) { printf("file cannot be opened"); }else printf("contents of test.txt"); fscanf(pRead,"%s",name); while(!feof(pRead)) { printf("%s\n",name); fscanf(pRead, "%s", name); } getch(); } Even online, every beginners tutorial I see does some variation of this, but I can't seem to get it to work even a little bit.

  • Logic: Best way to sample & count bytes of a 100MB+ file

    - by Jami
    Let's say I have this 170mb file (roughly 180 million bytes). What I need to do is to create a table that lists: all 4096 byte combinations found [column 'bytes'], and the number of times each byte combination appeared in it [column 'occurrences'] Assume two things: I can save data very fast, but I can update my saved data very slow. How should I sample the file and save the needed information? Here're some suggestions that are (extremely) slow: Go through each 4096 byte combinations in the file, save each data, but search the table first for existing combinations and update it's values. this is unbelievably slow Go through each 4096 byte combinations in the file, save until 1 million rows of data in a temporary table. Go through that table and fix the entries (combine repeating byte combinations), then copy to the big table. Repeat going through another 1 million rows of data and repeat the process. this is faster by a bit, but still unbelievably slow This is kind of like taking the statistics of the file. NOTE: I know that sampling the file can generate tons of data (around 22Gb from experience), and I know that any solution posted would take a bit of time to finish. I need the most efficient saving process

  • Unable to establish the connection to the file in BlackBerry

    - by Vikas

I get the following error: File system error (1003) I tried the example from here. I want only the read functionality, the file I want to read is in CSV format as a .txt file placed in the /res/test.txt. public class FileDemo extends MainScreen { public FileDemo() { setTitle("My Page"); String str = readTextFile("file:///test.txt"); System.out.println("Contents of the file::::::: " + str); } public String readTextFile(String fName) { String result = null; FileConnection fconn = null; DataInputStream is = null; try { fconn = (FileConnection) Connector.openInputStream(fName); is = fconn.openDataInputStream(); byte[] data = IOUtilities.streamToBytes(is); result = new String(data); } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println(e.getMessage()); } finally { try { if (null != is) is.close(); if (null != fconn) fconn.close(); } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println(e.getMessage()); } } return result; } } Any suggestions/advice on a better approach or as to how I can get this working??

  • Java: CSV file read & write.

    - by battousai622
    Im reading in 2 csv file: store_inventory & new_acquisitions... I want to be able to compare the store_inventory csv file with new_acquisitions. 1) If the item names match just update the quantity in store_inventory. 2) If new_acquisitions has a new item that does not exist in store_inventory, then add it to the store_inventory. Heres what i have so far but its not very good. I added comments where i need to add taks 1) & 2). Any advice or code would be great, thanks. • How to save file and read

    - by Jessy
    Hello everyone, I create a program that place random image in grid layout format. The size of the grid layout is 6 x 6 = 36. Only 10 were filled with images (each image was different) and the rest were empty. freeimagehosting.net/uploads/bfb7e85f63.jpg How can I save it to a file and read it again, so it will display the same images with same placement on the grid? Here is the code that I used to save the images: //image file String []arrPic = {"pic1.jpg","pic2.jpg","pic3.jpg","pic4.jpg","pic5.jpg","pic6.jpg","pic7.jpg","pic8.jpg","pic9.jpg","pic10.jpg",,"pic11.jpg","pic12.jpg","pic13.jpg"}; ArrayList<String> pictures = new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(arrPic)); ArrayList<String> file = new ArrayList<String>(); JPanel pDraw = new JPanel(new GridLayout(6,6,2,2)); ... //fill all grids with empty label for (int i =0; i<(6*6); i++){ JLabel lbl = new JLabel(""); pDraw.add(lbl); } ... //Choose random box to be filled with images for(int i=0; i<10; i++){ Boolean number = true; while(number){ int n = rand.nextInt(35); if(!(arraylist.contains(n))) number = false; arraylist.add(n); } //fill the grids with images for(int i=0; i<arraylist.size(); i++){ //select random image from arraylist int index = rand.nextInt (pictures.size()); String fileName = (String) pictures.get(index ); //find the image file icon = createImageIcon(fileName); //save the file in a new file file.add(fileName); //rescaled the image int x = rand.nextInt(50)+50; int y = rand.nextInt(50)+50; Image image = icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(x,y,Image.SCALE_SMOOTH); icon.setImage(image); //remove empty label and replace it with an image int one = (Integer) arraylist.get(i); pDraw.remove(one); final JLabel label; pDraw.add(label,one); }

  • How to boot Windows XP using the image file(not the extracted image file)

    - by Nrew
    Is it possible to boot from an iso image file itself. Because when you burn it, it gets extracted. Because in linux you can just place the .iso file in a removable media and boot from it without extracting. Is it possible to make something like that in windows? What I'm saying is related to this: http://wintoflash.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=312 Something like creating a flash drive which has the ability to install multiple os. They have something like this in pendrivelinux but I can't find it anymore. But that boot manager can only install linux. And other live cd's used in cleaning the system. That's why I'm asking if its possible to make a custom windows xp or windows 7 installer so that the image file alone can boot.

  • What would prevent a .BAT file from being run on a mapped drive?

    - by JBurace
    In WinXP SP3, I have a .BAT file on a mapped drive. When I try to run this .BAT file (or even right click-edit) it gives me: --------------------------- Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- This happens with any .BAT file, no matter what is within the file. If the file is on my local computer (like C:) it will run just fine. If someone else runs it from another computer (on the same mapped drive), it runs just fine. I have full permissions on the drive; I can edit/delete/save/write/create in that folder and/or .BAT file and I've ruled out permissions being the issue. It seems like a security prevention, but I can't tell what it would be. It would have to be something on my PC, but I don't use any 3rd party software. What would cause this error?

  • Why isn't pyinstaller making me an .exe file?

    I am attempting to follow this guide to make a simple Hello World script into an .exe file. I have Windows Vista with an AMD 64-bit processor I have installed Python 2.6.5 (Windows AMD64 version) I have set the PATH (if that's the right word) so that the command line recognizes Python I have installed UPX (there only seems to be a 32-bit version for Windows) and pasted a copy of upx.exe into the Python26 folder as instructed. I have installed Pywin (Windows AMD 64 Python 2.6 version) I have run Pyinstaller's Configure.py. It gives some error messages but seems to complete. I don't know if this is what's causing the problem, so the following is what it says when I run it: C:\Python26\Pyinstaller\branches\py26winConfigure.py I: read old config from C:\Python26\Pyinstaller\branches\py26win\config.dat I: computing EXE_dependencies I: Finding TCL/TK...
