• Setting up VPN with Snow Leopard Server and Linksys router

  I'd like to get VPN going so I can log in to the office securely from home. I'm using Snow Leopard machines everywhere, and currently have Airport Extremes set up at home and at the office. I have a mac mini with Snow Leopard Server that I'm going to move to the office to act as my server. I just bought a Linksys 4-port router because it says it does VPN (model RVS4000). My problem is, I don't have a clue how to set this thing up, and the more reading I do, the more confused I get. Do I need two of these routers, one at each end? My laptop and iPad claim they can do VPN, so I was assuming I only needed one VPN router? At this point, I literally don't know what questions to ask, or where to plug this thing in. Presumably, between the modem and the airport, but...? If somebody can walk me thru some really basic setup, I'd be very grateful. Right now, I feel like going outside and screaming for a while. But that might attract the local cougar, and after the prints I saw on the arena this afternoon, I don't want to draw its attention. :-)

• MongoDB data directory transfer and upgrade

  I just transferred my data directory (of Mongo 1.6.5) to a new server and installed Mongo 2.0 on it. I set the data directory path and did sudo server mongod restart. • Is it possible to combine the bandwidth from a DSL modem and a ClearWire modem?

  Kind of a crazy question, but... I am looking into getting a backup internet connection. I have DSL and ClearWire can now reach 4-5 meg speeds. I was thinking about getting that service as a backup connection, but I am wondering if I do that if I can combine the bandwidth to basically double my up and down speed? Will this work, and anything special I would need to do?

  Over the weekend an internet-facing DI-624 router of mine was e-mailing me logs like crazy for some reason. Normally it's a few a day, but it was about one every few minutes instead. Analyzing the messages, I found that only 340 had the same src and dst port number, whereas the majority of "default deny" dropped packets (28,000+) had the two ports different. What does this mean?

GridFS is a module for MongoDB that allows to store large files in de database. I am pondering the different options for storing the database. But since I am unexperienced at deployment and it is my first time with Mongodb I need your experience. Criteria: I want to spend my time developing my core business, that is, my own application. I am a Ruby on Rails developer. I do not like to mess with server configuration. Hence, I would like a fully managed hosting solution. But I would like to know about any other option, if you think it is worth it. It should be able to scale. Cloud style. Pay as you go. The lower the price, the better. So far I known of these services: https://mongohq.com/pricing https://mongomachine.com/pricing https://mongolab.com/about/pricing/ http://cloudcontrol.com/add-ons/mongodb/ And they seem to be OK for common needs, that is no file storage. But I am going to use GridFS, so the size matters. These services seems to scale, in price, quite poorly. MongoHQ: The larger plan max storage is 20 GB. Seems like a very little storage, for GridFS. MongoMachine: Flat price, 2.5$ per GB. I didn't found the limit. Seems like a good price, comparing the others. MongoLab: 3.984 GB max, which I don't think I will hit, so perfect. 8$ per GB, quite costly. CloudControl: The larger plan is 20 Gb. • Differences between Fedora servers

  I'm using Amazon EC2 and trying to choose a machine image (AMI) for my project. It seems all their LAMP AMIs are Fedora Core 4, but this seems like quite an old version, considering the current release is apparently Fedora 12, and < 10 releases are no longer supported. My question is how significantly different are the early fedora releases- is it crazy to be on versions 4 or even 8? (I realize this is probably a broad question)

• Mac: Cannot open the parent directory Library

  I really am about to go crazy because nothing worked out. I'm trying to access the Library folder on my OS Lion however all the tutorials related to this subject involves opening the user library however I would like to access the Library where the 'WebServer' folder is located when you enable web-sharing. Whenever I try to access it it gives me the error that I am not allowed to see what's inside and I checked my status, saying that I am an admin but it still occurs. Any help?

• Should I use nginx exclusively, or have it as a proxy to Tomcat (performance related)?

  I've planned to create a website that'll be pretty heavy on dynamic content, and want to know what would be the wisest choice for part of my webstack. Right now I'm trying to decide whether I should develop upon nginx, using PHP to deliver the dynamic content, or use nginx as a proxy to Tomcat and use servlets to deliver the dynamic content. I have a good amount of experience with Java, JSP, and servlets, so that's a plus right off the bat. Also, since it is a compiled language, it will execute faster than PHP (it is implied here that Java is around 37x faster than PHP) , and will create the web pages faster. I have no experience with PHP, however i'm under the impression that it is easy to pick up. It's slower than Java, but since the client will only be communicating with nginx, I'm thinking that serving the dynamically created web pages to the client will be faster this way. Considering these things, i'd like to know: Are my assumptions correct? Where does the bottleneck occur: creating pages or serving them back to the client? Will proxying Tomcat with nginx give me any of nginx performance benefits if I'm going to be using Tomcat to generate the dynamic content (keeping in mind my site is going to be heavy in this aspect)? I don't mind learning PHP if, in the end, its going to give me the best performance. I just want to know what would be the best choice from that standpoint.

• Why do my VMware Images get so large?

  Hi, I have a Centos VMware Image that I have recreated a couple times, and I notice that after a while it gets pretty large. It starts out at 8 GBs when I make it, and a week or two later it is 25GB and then a month later it is a whole 50GB or so. I am not installing anything crazy on it, and my disk usage on the VM is pretty low. Is there an option that could be affecting the size of these VMs?

• Xinerama 3 displays can't have main display in the middle

• Can I set up a different method of authentication on Nagios?

  Nagios is a wonderful too for monitoring servers. Their web interface is not bad, either. However I am not crazy about using the HTTP Authentication that comes standard. Is there a way to use another method of authentication? (and I don't mean restricting access by IP address in the .htaccess file) Something with a form-based login would be wonderful, but perhaps there is no such thing. I just got an offer from a dedicated hosting company, offering me a box with "2 Core 2 Quad processors @ 6GHz" I didn't know we could get 6GHz, and some googling turned out a bunch of people getting that, after overclocking like crazy, which seems to confirm my suspicion.   I just got a Macbook Air and the differences in color between it and my 2009 iMac are driving me crazy. I know there were certain iMac models from that period with yellow tinting issues, but I did the gray bar tests and that doesn't appear to be the issue. (No hardware issue suspected) However, my iMacs tones are more yellow prone than the macbook and I was wondering how to collaborate these two devices better for design work.
