• Is it a good idea to keep documentation in the VCS?

  At work we just moved to Mercurial for our VCS from SVN. In SVN we used to have a "docs" folder next to "trunk", in "docs" we would keep all our file documentation, client files, diagrams, mockups, etc. (we use a wiki(Redmine) for internal documentation). Now in a DVCS enviroment we don't need a "trunk" folder, so we drop the code at the root of the repo, and now having a "docs" folder inside the repo feels weird being at the same level that the code. This has taken me to reconsider if it is a good idea to keep those files in the VCS, we have a "documents" section in Redmine, but I have never used it because it is a pain to have to download a file each time I want to open it and I can't access the file when I'm offline. What best practices have you guys found to manage these kind of non-code files?

  I've installed MYOB on SBS server 2003. Why? Because the users were using offline files and it turned out there was about 7 versions of the file both locally and on the server that were out of sync... So the only way I could control the file access was to force RDP to the server... Always using the server file and always in sync... Anyway, this issue occurs in MYOB Accounting Plus 18.5. Cannot get the function address for "MAPISendMail" from "MAPI32.dll" Please check your Mapi installation I just want to send mail from MYOB but I can't - MYOB support is useless and blames everyone else...(i.e. Microsoft and outlook) I have found other people with the same problem whose resolution appears to be to copy MAPI32.dll into myob directory but that hasn't worked for me...

• MySQL Cluster data nodes - slow SELECTs

  Hi to all. First off, I'm new to MySQL Cluster. This is my pain: I've managed to setup a MySQL Cluster with two data nodes, two SQL nodes and one management server. Everything works pretty well, except the following: my data nodes are spread across an intranet link which incurs latency into communications between the data nodes. Apparently, due to MySQL Cluster's internal partitioning schemes, when my PHP application pulls data from the cluster via SELECT queries, parts of the data are pulled from both data nodes. This makes the page appear onscreen REALLY slowly. If I bring one data node offline, the data can only be pulled from that single remaining data node, and thus, the final result (HTML output) appears on the screen in a very timely fashion. So, my question is this: can the data nodes/cluster be told to pull data from partitions stored only on a particular data node?

• How do I send data from Java to Flash locally?

  I have a website with a Java applet and a Flash application. I want the Java applet to send data to the Flash application locally. What's the best way to do this? The data I want to send are potentially large images (possibly up to 1MB in size). This means sending a base64 string to javascript and then to Flash would probably be too cumbersome. I don't want to have to contact external servers or anything; all of it should be possible locally and offline. Is there some easy way to just send this sort of data around? If I saved the file locally first, Flash wouldn't be able to access that, would it?

• Mobile App integrating with Web portal

  I'm planning to develop a city info site. The web pages will display contents from a constantly updating MySQL database- most probably using a CMS. I am planning to share the same database for a Mobile app related to this. In the pages there are options for using geolocation, rate and comment for the user. I think, this mobile app should work while it's offline too. So how should i deal with data for mobile? Should i use a connection between MySQL and IndexedDB? (I'm not quite sure about this part). • Where is the windows app installed + .NET + VS2005

  I deployed a windows application in the following website http://StagingServer/MyProgs/MPP/ on my intranet site, using the Publish Wizard of VS 2005... I accepted all defaults (including Offline support). My users were also able to install the same from the path specified. But when I try to find out the exact location of the EXE in the client, it is not pointing anywhere. I also tried a file search but in vain. Initially I thought the application is running from the server itself, but we were able to start the app, even when the server is down (ofcourse it takes more time to search for updates initially). Ps : The app is showing even in control panel... Raja

• Syncing SQL Server 2008 Databases over HTTP using WCF & Sync Framework

  I've tried to get a solution for the above said question from MSDN Social and other resources from Microsoft. I was specifically looking for offline scenarios where client come online only to fetch updates from the Server. There are plenty of articles on Sync covering Sql CE but MSFT team seems to be ignoring questions from the community on Syncing with Sql Express clients. There is no standard provider for Sql Express client yet, and Sql 2008 change tracking is not supported in the latest release too. Since Sql Replication is an expensive alternative, I have to go with Sync Framework. Have anyone here in SO worked with Sync Framework, syncing through WCF endpoints? Please share code samples or sample projects.

I think it is because the access token expires. how can I change this code to incorporate the extended access token to log in the user to my site? offline access token is deprecated, so I need to use the extended access token.

In this system, we want to integrate many mobile devices which should also be capable of adequate online/offline functionality, e.g. preparing database inserts while a mobile device is temporarily unconnected, and performing them on the backend database when reconnected. For a .NET stack, Microsoft Sync Framework would be a perfect solution, e.g. to do database replication and hoarding.   I'm building a Client / Server app that has some very specific needs. There are 2 kinds of servers: the first kind provide most of the remote procedures and clients connect to these directly, while the second kind is a single server that should keep track of what users are active (clients) and how many servers of the first kind are active when a method is called. The main thing is that the monitor should ONLY connect to the servers and not the clients directly. My first idea was to implement a simple login/logout rmi method when a client connects/ disconnects and keep track of those in a list but the main problem is when a client or server end abnormally. For example, if a client goes offline abruptly the server should somehow be notified and update the list accordingly, while if a server goes out all of the clients connected to it should be marked as not active in the control server. Any ideas of how to implement this functionality would be appreciated.

  Hello stackoverflow members, How can I use gtkmm with MinGW (g++) without MSYS? Here is the story of my problem: I installed MinGW offline with all required packages (full install). I installed Apache Server and I copied all .tar.gz files and I created a website called sourceforge.org [localhost] and I installed automatically MinGW on Windows XP. After, I set the PATH variables. After, I installed gtkmm for MinGW (g++). I tried to compile a simple window with gtkmm + MinGW, but it does not work. I use this command line: g++ simple.cc -o simple pkg-config gtkmm-2.4 --cflags --libs After, I installed MSYS and I can compile simple.cc with MSYS, using this command line: g++ simple.cc -o simple pkg-config gtkmm-2.4 --cflags --libs My problem: I want to compile simple.cc without MSYS. I want compile my simple.cc with cmd.exe - It's possbile? If, yes. How? Thank you for reading my message. Any help is appreciated.

  I'm using asp.net mvc and creating a public website. I need to keep track of users that are online. I see that the standard way in asp.net of doing this is to keep track of LastActivityDate. My question is when should I update this? If I update it every time the users clicks somewhere, I will feel a performance draw back. However if I do not do that, people that only surf arround will be listed as offline. What is the best way to do this in asp.net MVC?

My problem is with the always-updating resource collection and with the building times, as in a time is set when the building, ship, research, and etc completes building and updates the user's profile even if the user is offline. Should it be a constantly running script in the background Note that I wish to only use PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Mysql but will learn something new if needed.   Basically I'm trying to make a little app for watching offline content. So there's a moment where the user selects to download the contents (and the app should download about 300 small files and images). I'd like to show the user how does the process go if he enters the proper activity. Showing a list of all the files, telling what has been already downloaded, in progress or waiting for download. My problem is that I really don't know what approach to take for achieve this. Since the download should last until finished I imagine the solution is an Service, but whats best? an IntentService, a Bound Service or an Standard Service calling a startService() for each download?   Hello, We implementing offline feature to an existing application. We have implemented the syn with SQL Server internal change tracking and over WCF using MS Sync Framework (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sync/default.aspx) All of our tables have primary key as integer, we cannot move to GUID. So as you are thinking we will have identity crises between applications. So we decided to go with the way Merge replication does(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa179416(SQL.80).aspx) partition the primary key range. Below is the example scenario - Server Table A - ID Range - 0 to 100 Client 1 Table A - ID Range - 101 to 200 Client 2 Table A - ID Range - 201 to 300 how to implement this ? i know we can use BCC CHECKIDENT (yourtable, reseed, value) CHECK (([ID]<=(100))) but this does not solve the issue.... Merge replication provides an option of "Not for replication"(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa237102(SQL.80).aspx) to achieve insert form clients and still maintain the set range.. can i use that somehow here? please help...
