• Python threads all executing on a single core

  I have a Python program that spawns many threads, runs 4 at a time, and each performs an expensive operation. Pseudocode: for object in list: t = Thread(target=process, args=(object)) # if fewer than 4 threads are currently running, t.start(). Otherwise, add t to queue But when the program is run, Activity Monitor in OS X shows that 1 of the 4 logical cores is at 100% and the others are at nearly 0. Obviously I can't force the OS to do anything but I've never had to pay attention to performance in multi-threaded code like this before so I was wondering if I'm just missing or misunderstanding something. • Are bit operations quick?

  I'm dealing with a problem which needs to work with a lot of data. Currently its' values are represented as unsigned int. I know that real values do not exceed some limit, say 1000. That means that I can use unsigned short to store it. One profit is that it'll use less space. Do I have to pay for it by loosing in performance? Another assumption. I decided to store data as short but all calling functions use int, so I need to convert between these datatypes when storing/extracting values. Wiil the performance lost be dramatic? Third assumption. Due to great wish to econom memory I decided to use not short but just 10 bits packed into array of unsigned int. What will happen in this case comparing with previous ones?

• Where can I take an online programming aptitude test/exam?

  A potential employer requires me to take an online aptitude test before my interview (in this case the test is for C, from Previsor). Where can I take the same (or similar) test so I have a rough idea on what I should brush up on? I've taken a similar test for C++ previously, so I have some idea of what to expect. I've also been studying my C books thoroughly (especially the required material as described in the PDF), but I feel it would be a good idea to get a feel for the particular test before taking it. I did a quick search on Brainbench, but they don't seem to have a C test, unless I'm mistaken (only C++). Note: I'm happy to pay to take a test if no decent free ones are available.

• Is it possible to take a screenshot of a web page with Javascript or HTML5/Canvas?

  Is there a way I could insert some code into a page that would take a screenshot of what the user sees in the browser window, then upload that image via a web form of some sort? I'm working on a clone of a pay-to-use service that lets you install a widget on a web page which in turn allows viewers to report bugs in the sites layout. Currently they use a Java applet to take the screenshot, which, in my opinion, is probably the worst way to go about it (aside from requiring the user to install a plugin) Is there a javascript/flash/other alternative? • Mapping US zip code to time zone

  When users register with our app, we are able to infer their zip code when we validate them against a national database. What would be the best way to determine a good potential guess of their time zone from this zip code? We are trying to minimize the amount of data we explicitly have to ask them for. They will be able to manually set the time zone later if our best guess is wrong. I realize zip codes won't help with figuring out the time zone outside the US, but in that case we'd have to manually ask anyway, and we deal predominantly with the US regardless. I've found a lot of zip code databases, and so far only a few contain time zone information, but those that do are not free, such as this one. If it's absolutely necessary to pay a subscription to a service in order to do this, then it will not be worth it and we will just have to ask users explicitly. Although language isn't particularly relevant as I can probably convert things however needed, we're using PHP and MySQL.

• charts, forms and credit card payment in drupal

  Hey. I've got this client who's a dietician and wants a site with some functionality I'm not sure how to implement: custom forms that calculate some stuff (like ideal body weight, based on a bazillion factors), the user is supposed to be able to pay for the consultation with a credit card - which lets him access more consultation forms, bi-weekly results from how a user's diet is going (weight reduction and so on) should be displayed using a series of charts, preferably in the user's account page. I use Drupal exclusively, so the question is whether such functionality can be implemented using existing modules? Which modules would you recommend? Can this be achieved without writing custom modules (I've never written a Drupal module)? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

  I have been given a nasty wake up a while ago when I discovered that my 10 years of experience was really equivalent of about 4 (got trapped in a big company doing the same thing over and over without realizing it) and is now paying a huge price. Question 1: I did servlets/JSP programming back in the day (2001-2003). Since then there have been libraries like GWT, YUI, etc. Is JSP still the preferred way of building web apps using Java? Question 2: Because I enjoyed what I was doing and needed to pay the bills, I didn't realize that the ground below me has shifted. How do avoid this in the future? My years of C system programming doesn't seem to matter a lot now to the young guys who talk about design patterns.

  I published my app. I request a review to more than 150 sites but only 8 of them give me a (good) review. I can't reach the most famous blogs because I have to pay to bring on top of their queue. Now, my app seems to be nice but I have only 65 users playing it. This 65 users seems to really like it because I can see there are a lot of games played tracked in my stats. A lot of users say that my app is "fun like Doodle Jump and very addictive". So, what's the problem? Why only 65 people? • Are there any open-source / free site analytics solutions that are intranet deployable?

  There are plenty of statistics/analytics providers for Internet deployed software (e.g. Google Analytics), but I'm looking for an analytics tool to integrate into a LAN/intranet based web application. I'm aware of AWStats, but I'd prefer something with a design similar to Google Analytics, where a Javascript callback can be embedded into the app and call back to an analytics server. This doesn't require any sort of extra application server configuration and access to run. I'm thinking there's nothing available that isn't proprietary / pay-for, but I'd love to be told I'm wrong!

• stripe payment issue ruby on rails

  So I have made a stripe payment option in my app. When I click the button pay now, it shows me that the payment is successful. and when I go to my stripe account and go to stripe-test and check logs, I can see my test payment with the code 200 OK. But this payment doesn't show in stripe-test events, or in stripe-test payments. • What are some things I should watch out for before hiring a freelance programmer

  I am looking to hire a freelancer for a big web application. The budget for this project is a little over $20,000. The programmer will develop in asp.net MVC C#. Are there any usual things I should pay attention to or watch out for. i really don't want to hire the freelancer and when he/she is done with the project it is not what i expect. I have heard horror stories where the programmer delivered a fantastic product but the code was not commented and parts of the software was hidden behind DLLs. Is there anyway to avoid situations like this? I am sure I cannot think of every possible scenario when i write the project description. Also, is it advisable to hire a lawyer to write the contract?

  Hi, I need to give one client the ability to convert some videos to f4v h264 before loading it up to an AIR app. I normally doing with the Adobe Media Encoder CS4 but that only ships with adobe products (you can't download it as a free standalone app - which, start rant is odd, you'd think they would push the format - Microsoft's competing expresssion encoder is free end rant) Anyway, I need to get a (hopefully not too expensive, but willing to pay for it) good 3rd part app that can take any video and convert it to an f4v. Can you suggest any? Everything i've found is horrible or jammed with ads and crap. What would you use? Any suggestion? (please don't just say ffmpeg - I know it can do it but we need to good simple GUI) Thanks!

• MSSQL 2000 Stored Procedure to Split Shift Times

  I am being asked to alter a system to include the ability to have pay differentials based on hours worked. The old method included a stored procedure (MSSQL2000 db) that did the basics, but simply knows the start and end of every shift. • How do I handle a low job offer for an entry level position?

  Hi guys! I recently graduated with MS in CS and I am excited because I just received a job offer from a company I really like for an entry-level sw engineer position. The thing is that, although the salary is not my priority and I care way more about gaining experience, their offer unfortunately is way below of what I expected. Actually after I did some research I realized that, comparing to the average salary range for the entry-level sw engineering positions in my area (one of the most expensive areas in the US) supposedly [X - Y]$ (where X is the lowest average and Y the highest), their offer is 20% below X! I wouldnt have a problem accepting an offer around X but this one is even lower than the lowest. Can I counter offer the X which is 20% more than what they offered me but at the same time is the minimum average? -- And mind you that I didnt even take under consideration the fact that I hold a MS degree which in many cases yields to a 5-10% more pay.

• Is there a technical way to speed up a general program above current PC speed limit?

  Let's imagine I developed a Windows console application implementing some algorithm calculating something. Let's say it doesn't use any threads, just straightforward linear approach with ifs, loops and so on. Is there any technical way to make if run it 100x times faster than on the most advanced current PC? For example one of the way would be to run it on a super computer that emulates i386 faster than any of the existing PCs. But in this case the question what computer and does it really have ability to emulate Windows. In other words, is there real examples of such approach? Although in general it looks useless, but if there is a way, one could develop some program on his general home computer and pay for running it much faster on some other hardware. I suppose that this question could be asked on superuser.com, but since there are possible specific with such things as assembler instructions or threads, I thought that stackoverflow.com is better

  We are capturing a visible tab in a Chrome browser (by using the extensions API chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab) and receiving a snapshot in the data URI scheme (Base64 encoded string). Is there a JavaScript library that can be used to scale down an image to a certain size? Currently we are styling it via CSS, but have to pay performance penalties as pictures are mostly 100 times bigger than required. Additional concern is also the load on the localStorage we use to save our snapshots. Does anyone know of a way to process this data URI scheme formatted pictures and reduce their size by scaling them down? • Turn Bluetooth On and Off in Andriod 1.5 (SDK level 3)?

  There are tons of pay and free bluetooth toggles on the market that work with Android 1.5 (SDK level 3). The problem is there is no visible API for this! Does anyone have any working code snippits on how to enable and disable bluetooth that works on Android 1.5? I assume you must have to use some kind of reflection for it. There are some examples over on anddev.org, but they only work with Android 1.1 or lower. This is for Android 1.5 (SDK level 3) and not Android 2.0 or greater. In Android 2.0 or later Google added easy to use APIs.

• Accepting bank account information in a form

  What security concerns are there when accepting a user's bank account information (account number and routing number) via a form on a page that is using SSL, and posting it back to the server where I then curl off a HTTPS request to send that information to an ACH service like First ACH or ACH Direct via their API? We wouldn't be saving the bank account information in our database. I know another option is to use Paypal's Mass Pay API, but they think it's unprofessional (at least for their business) to require customers to have a paypal account to get paid. Thoughts?

And have no problems with UsersController. When i delete following lines from SubscriptionsController: load_and_authorize_resource :user load_and_authorize_resource :subscription, through: :user before_filter :authenticate_user! Have no problems at all. So the issue in these lines or in Ability.rb. Any suggestions?

• What are good resources to learn Coldfusion for a job application...

  The job title is "ColdFusion Developer." I have bit's HTML and Javascripting experience, but mostly have worked in the "harder" languages such as C and C++ with occational flurries of assembly. I'm currently employeed, but in the current job climate I figure it can't hurt to be looking around and applying for other positions. Plus according to the friend who sent me the job posting, it is suppose to pay "very well." They left my office to work for this company themself so I figure it's a reasonable evaluation of the company. I don't know if there are any free tools that I could use to get my feet wet and bone up for an interview, or what sort of literature is decent for the ColdFusion. Plus any ideas on how to tune a resume for it would also be helpful.
