• Reversing an lvreduce of LVM to original size

  On a RHEL system that uses LVM 2 with 4K blocks. Have been successful in reducing the LV, but trying to get steps to reverse the operation so that the LV returns to its original size. Using these steps to reduce the LV by 1GB, # umount /foo # e2fsk -f /dev/mylvm/foo # resize2fs /dev/mylvm/foo <Current LV Block count - 1GB/4K> # lvreduce --size <Current # GB - 1GB> /dev/mylvm/foo Then to reverse the reduction # lvextend --size <Original #GB> /dev/mylvm/foo # resize2fs /dev/mylvm/foo The reversal gets close to the orignal size. A 'df -h' reports that it seems to be about ~ 0.1GB shy of the original size. Using these utilities, is there a better procedure to shrink and grow the LV so that the original state can be recovered effectively?

• logrotate by size outside the daily schedule

  We have a couple of applications that generate huge log files. It's not enough to rotate those logs daily, so I created the following logrotate conf: /var/log/ourapp/*log { compress copytruncate missingok size 200M rotate 10 } The idea is that we can keep 2GB of logs for this one application, no matter how quickly those files are filling up. The problem, though, is that logrotate only runs once daily. AFAIK, when logrotate kicks off at 4am, it will check to see that the size is at least 200M and rotate it if so. Ideally logrotate would run every minute, check the size, and rotate if the size is greater. Is there a standard way for rotating based on size outside of the daily cron schedule?

• Linux Defualt Startup Display PCI to fix black boot screen

  You heard it all before black screen on boot after perfectly fine install of most linux ubnuntu mint etc distributions (the netbook works fine) It has an Intel N10 integrated graphics chipset. I have actually found that if I plug in an external display then remove it the default screen turns on and my laptop works fine drivers all great - I have tried the screen cycle button fn f7 but doesn't work when no display is plugged in. It also works out all the correct resolutions and no modification of the grub bootloader or creating any xorg configs. So I think my monitor is forcing to a display that doesn't exist. Do you know if there is anyway I can force it to choose a different screen at boot so I can get a login screen? I can use nomodeset on grub but xrandr cant add the damned 1024 600 60 resolution that I need! Ideas guys?

• stat and ls show wrong file size (terabytes wrong)

  Ok, I have a bunch of vCard files, all about 200 to 300 Bytes in size. While trying to get them archived, I wondered why that takes so long and discovered that there is one file with a wrong size. Both ls and stat are showing a size of about 8.1 Terabytes. That's amazing because my SSD is only about 250 Gigabytes in size. There are some other files with wrong sizes, too, but this is clearly the biggest one. I already gave it a fsck, but there seem to be no errors in the (ext4) filesystem. How can I get rid of this wrong size? Thanks, Wolle

• Windows 7 freezes on boot screen

  There was some update that required me to restart my computer, so I did. when it restarted, it stays at the Windows boot screen forever, the screen that says "Starting Windows" and has that Windows logo in the middle. I've tried the start up repair program that shows up when I click F8 when the computer starts. And tried system restore but, it says it has restored windows successfully but it still freezes on the boot screen when I reboot it. When I try starting it in safe mode, it gets to the blue Windows background, the one with the logon screen, then says "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off." Then after a while it reboot by itself. Just noticed, the logo animation on the boot screen is still animated. So it's not completely frozen.

• Virtual Screen Splitter

  I am looking for a utility that will allow my screen to be split into two sections. I would like to do this so that programs can easily fill or get sized properly to one part of the screen. This way I can pretend that I have a separate monitor for working on my stuff, while my kids can watch something on the other side. In addition, this should help prevent any popups covering up their side of the screen. Although Windows 7 comes with ability to drag a program window to a side and it becomes sized to half of the screen automatically, this is insufficient for me. I would like to make sure that any programs I launch or any pop-ups that open up, do not block the other side of the screen, even for a short time. Also, I am not looking for a virtual OS solution, as in VirtualBox.

• Mozilla nonsense. Page changes size by itself

  I have never intentionally changed the size of font on latest mozilla browser install on windows machine. For example Google site is now 200% size, and I did nothing to make this happen. Whats worse is it does not change back but remembers this! Similarly other sites are too small and they remember this per site. What is going on here? I mean what nonsense! How can I undo this? And for extra points who came up with this absurd behavior at mozilla? Not making this up folks. 15.0.1 Not at all clear why it changes size or how to go back to default size for these sites Acutally it just happened again while editing this entry. Icon changes and than font size is too small.

• The Windows Browser Ballot Screen Offers Web Browser Choice to European Users

  Since March, our friends across the pond in Europe get to decide which browser they want to install with their Windows OS. Today we thought we would take a look at the ballot choices, some are well known, and others you may not have heard of. Windows users in European countries should start seeing the so called “Browser Ballot Screen” after installing the Windows Update KB976002 (link below). The browser ballot offers a dozen different browsers, including some you’ve likely never heard of.  They each have some unique features, and are all free, and here we take a quick look at each of them. Internet Explorer 8 Internet Explorer is the world’s most used web browser, as it’s bundled with Windows. It also includes several unique features, including Accelerators that make it easy to search or find a map of a location, and InPrivate filtering to directly control what sites can get personal information.  Additionally, it offers great integration with Windows Touch and the new taskbar in Windows 7. IE 8 runs on Windows XP and newer, and is bundled with Windows 7. Mozilla Firefox 3.6 Firefox is the most popular browser other than Internet Explorer.  It is the modern descendant of Netscape, and is loved by web developers for its adherence to web standards, openness, and expandability.  It offers thousands of Add-ons and themes to let you customize it to fit your preferences. The most recent version has added Personas, which are quick, lightweight themes to let you personalize the look your browser. It’s open source, and runs on all modern versions of Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Google Chrome 4 Google Chrome has gained an impressive amount of market share during its short time in the market. It offers a minimalistic interface and fast speeds with intensive web applications. With version 4 you can add a growing number of extensions, personalize it with a variety of stylish themes, and automatically translate foreign websites into your own language. Opera 10.50 Although Opera has been around for over a decade, relatively few users have used it. With the new 10.50 release, Opera has many unique features packed in a sleek UI. It integrates great with Aero and the Windows 7 taskbar, and lets you preview the contents of your websites in the tab bar. It also includes Opera Unite, a small personal web server to make file sharing easy, Opera Turbo to speed up your internet when the connection is slow, and Opera Link to keep all your copies of Opera in sync. It’s a popular browser on many mobile devices, and version 10.50 has a lot of enhancements. Apple Safari 4 Safari is the default browser in Mac OS X, and starting with version 3 it has been available for Windows as well. It’s based on Webkit, the popular new rendering engine that provides great speed and standards compatibility.  Safari 4 lets you browse your browsing history in a unique Coverflow interface, and shows your Top Sites in a fancy, 3D interface.  It’s also great for viewing mobile websites for the iPhone and other mobile devices through Developer Tools. Flock 2.5 Based on the popular Firefox core, Flock brings a multitude of social features to your browsing experience. You can view the latest YouTube videos, Flickr pictures, update your favorite social network, and keep up with your webmail thanks to It’s integration with a wide variety of services. You can even post to your blog through the integrated blog editor. If your time online is mostly spent in social services, this may be a browser you want to check out. Maxthon 2.5 Maxthon is a unique browser that builds on Internet Explorer to bring more features with IE’s rendering. Formerly known as MyIE2, Maxthon was popular for bringing tabbed browsing with IE rendering during the days of IE 6.  Today Maxthon supports a wide range of plugins and skins, so you can customize it however you want. It includes mouse gestures, a web accelerator to speed up pokey internet connections, a content blocker to remove unwanted content from sites, an online account to backup your favorites, and a nice download manager. Avant Browser Another nice browser based on Internet Explorer, Avant brings a wide variety of features in a nice brushed-metal interface. It includes an integrated AutoFill for forms, mouse gestures, customizable skins, and privacy protection features. It also includes a Flash blocker that will only load flash in webpages when you select them. You can also integrate Avant with an online account to store your bookmarks, feeds, settings and passwords online. Sleipnir Sleipnir is a customizable browser meant for advance users that is quite popular in Japan. It’s built on the Trident engine and virtually every aspect of is customizable unlike Internet Explorer.   FlashPeak SlimBrowser SlimBrowser from FlashPeak incorporates a lot of features like Popup Killer, Auto Login, site filtering and more. It’s based on Internet Explorer but offers a lot more customizable options out of the box.   K-meleon This basic browser is light on system resources and based on the Gecko engine. It’s been in development for years on SourceForge, and if you like to tweak virtually any aspect of your browser, this might be a good choice for you.   GreenBrowser GreenBrowser is based on Internet Explorer and is available in several languages.   If i have a vertex shader that manage some movements and variations about the position of some vertex in my OpenGL context, OpenGL is smart enough to just run this shader on only the vertex visible on the screen? This part of the OpenGL programmable pipeline is not clear to me because all the sources are not really really clear about this, they talk about fragments and pixels and I get that, but what about vertex shaders? If you need a reference i'm reading from this right now and this online book has a couple of examples about this.

  There are many different Print dialogs but one is very common and is used by Gimp, Shutter, Evloution and Simple Scan. In all these apps the "Page Size" and "Orientation" are disabled. The same dialog in Firefox, Thunderbird and GEdit works OK. I program in Gambas3 which uses this dialog in conjunction with the GTK+ library and it also has these options disabled. If I use the QT4 library then a different print dialog is displayed with no problems. Anybody else notice this problem and found a solution?

Open your terminal and type sudo apt-get install v86d Then sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Find this line #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and chagne for this one (of course choose your resolution) GRUB_GFXMODE=1440x900x24 GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep Save file and type in terminal echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash sudo update-initramfs -u sudo update-grub2 It's worked for me in all Ubuntu versions. Give it a try :)

  After getting to the screen that states: "This computer currently has Windows 7 on it. What would you like to do?" I am not able to continue with the installation process after selecting "Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7". I am running Ubuntu off a USB drive after using UNetBootin and then selecting the "Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" shortcut. Everything included on the online guides worked perfectly up to this point. Very new to Linux, please help?

  I've been searching online and reading tutorials and etc about how to make my ubuntu VM dual screen(x86_64). I have first tried to run these commands: sudo aticonfig --initial -f which gave me the ouput of: sudo: aitconfig: command not found I then googled the output and followed these instructions that I tells me to install my ATI drivers onto my ubuntu. wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run sudo sh ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/natty sudo dpkg -i *.deb sudo apt-get -f install sudo aticonfig -f --initial --adapter=all sudo reboot It all works well until I input sudo apt-get -f install which gives me the following output: sudo apt-get -f install Reading package lists... • Purple/Pink lines on screen after login on Ubuntu Desktop 13.04

  I downloaded Ubuntu 13.04 and I loaded up the live system. It loaded up fine but when I clicked on the Ubuntu logo purple and pink lines appeared on screen and they didn't go away so I thought that if I installed the OS it would be fine so I installed the OS, logged in and lo and behold the purple and pink lines where back. My video card is nVidia N force (I think) Anyone having the same problem???

• Ubuntu 64-bit 12.04 installation dvd boot problem blank screen

  I get blank screen when trying to install UbuntuStudio 64-bit DVD (i tried to install from DVD not USB stick). When using nosplash and no quiet i see that it hangs when it tries to load the nouveau driver for my GeForce GT 630 so it looks like there is a problem with support for my graphics card. After installation, I tried to install the binary nvidia current driver from package manager, but then, i just get a text terminal after rebooting. Any solution?

• Kicked back to log in screen immediately after log in

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and whenever I try to log in using my main account, it kicks me back to log in screen. My other accounts don't do this however. I also tried to read .xsessions-errors using cat but it would output gpg-agent[7156]: failed to run the command: No such file or directory I can also log in my main account with tty. How can I fix it so I can log into my main account again?
