  • Python and mechanize login script

    - by Perun
    Hi fellow programmers! I am trying to write a script to login into my universities "food balance" page using python and the mechanize module... This is the page I am trying to log into: http://www.wcu.edu/11407.asp The website has the following form to login: <FORM method=post action=https://itapp.wcu.edu/BanAuthRedirector/Default.aspx><INPUT value=https://cf.wcu.edu/busafrs/catcard/idsearch.cfm type=hidden name=wcuirs_uri> <P><B>WCU ID Number<BR></B><INPUT maxLength=12 size=12 type=password name=id> </P> <P><B>PIN<BR></B><INPUT maxLength=20 type=password name=PIN> </P> <P></P> <P><INPUT value="Request Access" type=submit name=submit> </P></FORM> From this we know that I need to fill in the following fields: 1. name=id 2. name=PIN With the action: action=https://itapp.wcu.edu/BanAuthRedirector/Default.aspx This is the script I have written thus far: #!/usr/bin/python2 -W ignore import mechanize, cookielib from time import sleep url = 'http://www.wcu.edu/11407.asp' myId = '11111111111' myPin = '22222222222' # Browser #br = mechanize.Browser() #br = mechanize.Browser(factory=mechanize.DefaultFactory(i_want_broken_xhtml_support=True)) br = mechanize.Browser(factory=mechanize.RobustFactory()) # Use this because of bad html tags in the html... # Cookie Jar cj = cookielib.LWPCookieJar() br.set_cookiejar(cj) # Browser options br.set_handle_equiv(True) br.set_handle_gzip(True) br.set_handle_redirect(True) br.set_handle_referer(True) br.set_handle_robots(False) # Follows refresh 0 but not hangs on refresh > 0 br.set_handle_refresh(mechanize._http.HTTPRefreshProcessor(), max_time=1) # User-Agent (fake agent to google-chrome linux x86_64) br.addheaders = [('User-agent','Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/17.0.963.56 Safari/535.11'), ('Accept', 'text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8'), ('Accept-Encoding', 'gzip,deflate,sdch'), ('Accept-Language', 'en-US,en;q=0.8'), ('Accept-Charset', 'ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3')] # The site we will navigate into br.open(url) # Go though all the forms (for debugging only) for f in br.forms(): print f # Select the first (index two) form br.select_form(nr=2) # User credentials br.form['id'] = myId br.form['PIN'] = myPin br.form.action = 'https://itapp.wcu.edu/BanAuthRedirector/Default.aspx' # Login br.submit() # Wait 10 seconds sleep(10) # Save to a file f = file('mycatpage.html', 'w') f.write(br.response().read()) f.close() Now the problem... For some odd reason the page I get back (in mycatpage.html) is the login page and not the expected page that displays my "cat cash balance" and "number of block meals" left... Does anyone have any idea why? Keep in mind that everything is correct with the header files and while the id and pass are not really 111111111 and 222222222, the correct values do work with the website (using a browser...) Thanks in advance EDIT Another script I tried: from urllib import urlopen, urlencode import urllib2 import httplib url = 'https://itapp.wcu.edu/BanAuthRedirector/Default.aspx' myId = 'xxxxxxxx' myPin = 'xxxxxxxx' data = { 'id':myId, 'PIN':myPin, 'submit':'Request Access', 'wcuirs_uri':'https://cf.wcu.edu/busafrs/catcard/idsearch.cfm' } opener = urllib2.build_opener() opener.addheaders = [('User-agent','Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/17.0.963.56 Safari/535.11'), ('Accept', 'text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8'), ('Accept-Encoding', 'gzip,deflate,sdch'), ('Accept-Language', 'en-US,en;q=0.8'), ('Accept-Charset', 'ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3')] request = urllib2.Request(url, urlencode(data)) open("mycatpage.html", 'w').write(opener.open(request)) This has the same behavior...

  • htaccess - Redirects with more than 1 level deep not working

    - by barfoon
    Hey everyone, Just moved to shared hosting on GoDaddy and Im trying to get my .htaccess rules working. Heres what I have: ErrorDocument 404 /error.php Options FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.mydomain\.org$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://mydomain.org/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteRule ^view/(\w+)$ viewitem.php?itemid=$1 [R=301,L] RewriteRule ^category/(\w+)$ viewcategory.php?tag=$1 [R=301,L] RewriteRule ^faq$ faq.php RewriteRule ^about$ about.php RewriteRule ^contact$ contact.php RewriteRule ^submit$ submit.php RewriteRule ^contactmsg$ handler-contact.php All the pages @ the root of the domain seem to be working i.e mydomain.org/faq, mydomain.org/about are working. But whenever I try mydomain.org/category/somecategory, I get a 404. How can I fix my .htaccess to obey these rules that are more than 1 level deep? Thanks,

  • Submitting a URL into a Form without "http://", with "www.", or with neither

    - by John
    (EDITED) Hello, In the form below, the filed for <div class="urlfield"><input name="url" type="url" id="url" maxlength="500"></div> fine when a URL is submitted that has a "http://" at the beginning of it. However, it doesn't work if a URL is submitted with only a "www." in front of it, or with neither a "http://" nor a "www." How can I make it work in all if the submitted URL has any or none of the following at the beginning of it: http:// www. http://www. Thanks in advance, John Form: echo '<div class="submittitle">Submit an item.</div>'; echo '<form action="http://www...com/.../submit2.php" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$_SESSION['loginid'].'" name="uid"> <div class="submissiontitle"><label for="title">Story Title:</label></div> <div class="submissionfield"><input name="title" type="title" id="title" maxlength="1000"></div> <div class="urltitle"><label for="url">Link:</label></div> <div class="urlfield"><input name="url" type="url" id="url" maxlength="500"></div> <div class="submissionbutton"><input name="submit" type="submit" value="Submit"></div> </form> '; submit2.php: <?php if($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == "POST"){header('Location: http://www...com/.../submit2.php');} require_once "header.php"; if (isLoggedIn() == true) { $remove_array = array('http://www.', 'http://', 'https://', 'https://www.', 'www.'); $cleanurl = str_replace($remove_array, "", $_POST['url']); $cleanurl = strtolower($cleanurl); $cleanurl = preg_replace('/\/$/','',$cleanurl); $cleanurl = stripslashes($cleanurl); $title = $_POST['title']; $uid = $_POST['uid']; $title = mysql_real_escape_string($title); $title = stripslashes($title); $cleanurl = mysql_real_escape_string($cleanurl); $site1 = 'http://' . $cleanurl; $displayurl = parse_url($site1, PHP_URL_HOST); function isURL($url1 = NULL) { if($url1==NULL) return false; $protocol = '(http://|https://)'; $allowed = '[-a-z0-9]{1,63}'; $regex = "^". $protocol . // must include the protocol '(' . $allowed .   • MVC multi page form losing session

    - by Bryan
    I have a multi-page form that's used to collect leads. There are multiple versions of the same form that we call campaigns. Some campaigns are 3 page forms, others are 2 pages, some are 1 page. They all share the same lead model and campaign controller, etc. There is 1 action for controlling the flow of the campaigns, and a separate action for submitting all the lead information into the database. I cannot reproduce this locally, and there are checks in place to ensure users can't skip pages. Session mode is InProc. This runs after every POST action which stores the values in session: protected override void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext filterContext) { base.OnActionExecuted(filterContext); if (this.Request.RequestType == System.Net.WebRequestMethods.Http.Post && this._Lead != null) ParentStore.Lead = this._Lead; } This is the Lead property within the controller: private Lead _Lead; /// <summary> /// Gets the session stored Lead model. /// </summary> /// <value>The Lead model stored in session.</value> protected Lead Lead { get { if (this._Lead == null) this._Lead = ParentStore.Lead; return this._Lead; } } ParentStore class: public static class ParentStore { internal static Lead Lead { get { return SessionStore.Get<Lead>(Constants.Session.Lead, new Lead()); } set { SessionStore.Set(Constants.Session.Lead, value); } } Campaign POST action: [HttpPost] public virtual ActionResult Campaign(Lead lead, string campaign, int page) { if (this.Session.IsNewSession) return RedirectToAction("Campaign", new { campaign = campaign, page = 0 }); if (ModelState.IsValid == false) return View(GetCampaignView(campaign, page), this.Lead); TrackLead(this.Lead, campaign, page, LeadType.Shared); return RedirectToAction("Campaign", new { campaign = campaign, page = ++page }); } The problem is occuring between the above action, and before the following Submit action executes: [HttpPost] public virtual ActionResult Submit(Lead lead, string campaign, int page) { if (this.Session.IsNewSession || this.Lead.Submitted || !this.LeadExists) return RedirectToAction("Campaign", new { campaign = campaign, page = 0 }); lead.AddCustomQuestions(); MergeLead(campaign, lead, this.AdditionalQuestionsType, false); if (ModelState.IsValid == false) return View(GetCampaignView(campaign, page), this.Lead); var sharedLead = this.Lead.ToSharedLead(Request.Form.ToQueryString(false)); //Error occurs here and sends me an email with whatever values are in the form collection. EAUtility.ProcessLeadProxy.SubmitSharedLead(sharedLead); this.Lead.Submitted = true; VisitorTracker.DisplayConfirmationPixel = true; TrackLead(this.Lead, campaign, page, LeadType.Shared); return RedirectToAction(this.ConfirmationView); } Every visitor to our site gets a unique GUID visitorID. But when these error occurs there is a different visitorID between the Campaign POST and the Submit POST. Because we track each form submission via the TrackLead() method during campaign and submit actions I can see session is being lost between calls, despite the OnActionExecuted firing after every POST and storing the form in session. So when there are errors, we get half the form under one visitorID and the remainder of the form under a different visitorID. Luckily we use a third party service which sends an API call every time a form value changes which uses it's own ID. These IDs are consistent between the first half of the form, and the remainder of the form, and the only way I can save the leads from the lost session issues. I should also note that this works fine 99% of the time. EDIT: I've modified my code to explicitly store my lead object in TempData and used the TempData.Keep() method to persist the object between subsequent requests. I've only deployed this behavior to 1 of my 3 sites but so far so good. I had also tried storing my lead objects in Session directly in the controller action i.e., Session.Add("lead", this._Lead); which uses HTTPSessionStateBase, attempting to circumvent the wrapper class, instead of HttpContext.Current.Session which uses HTTPSessionState. This modification made no difference on the issue, as expected.

  • Why doesn't the default model binder update my partial view model on postback?

    - by bdnewbe
    I have a class that contains another class as one of its properties. public class SiteProperties { public SiteProperties() { DropFontFamily = "Arial, Helvetica, Sans-serif"; } public string DropFontFamily { get; set; } private ResultPageProperties m_ResultPagePropertyList; public ResultPageProperties ResultPagePropertyList { get { if (m_ResultPagePropertyList == null) m_ResultPagePropertyList = new ResultPageProperties(); return m_ResultPagePropertyList; } set { m_ResultPagePropertyList = value; } } } The second class has just one property public class ResultPageProperties { public ResultPageProperties() { ResultFontFamily = "Arial, Helvetica, Sans-serif"; } public string ResultFontFamily { get; set; } } My controller just grabs the SiteProperties and returns the view. On submit, it accepts SiteProperties and returns the same view. public class CompanyController : Controller { public ActionResult SiteOptions(int id) { SiteProperties site = new SiteProperties(); PopulateProperyDropDownLists(); return View("SiteOptions", site); } [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult SiteOptions(SiteProperties properties) { PopulateProperyDropDownLists(); return View("SiteOptions", properties); } private void PopulateProperyDropDownLists() { var fontFamilyList = new List<SelectListItem>(); fontFamilyList.Add(new SelectListItem() { Text = "Arial, Helvetica, Sans-serif", Value = "Arial, Helvetica, Sans-serif" }); fontFamilyList.Add(new SelectListItem() { Text = "Times New Roman, Times, serif", Value = "Times New Roman, Times, serif" }); fontFamilyList.Add(new SelectListItem() { Text = "Courier New, Courier, Monospace", Value = "Courier New, Courier, Monospace" }); ViewData["FontFamilyList"] = fontFamilyList; } } The view contains a partial view that renders the ResultPageProperties Model. <% using (Html.BeginForm("SiteOptions", "Company", FormMethod.Post)) {%> <p><input type="submit" value="Submit" /></p> <div>View level input</div> <div> <label>Font family</label><br /> <%= Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.DropFontFamily, ViewData["FontFamilyList"] as List<SelectListItem>, new { Class = "UpdatesDropDownExample" })%> </div> <% Html.RenderPartial("ResultPagePropertyInput", Model.ResultPagePropertyList); %> <% } %> The partial is just <div style='margin-top: 1em;'>View level input</div> <div> <label>Font family</label><br /> <%= Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.ResultFontFamily, ViewData["FontFamilyList"] as List<SelectListItem>, new { Class = "UpdatesResultPageExample" })%> </div> OK, so when the page renders, you get "Arial, ..." in both selects. If you choose another option for both and click submit, the binder populates the SiteProperties object and passes it to the controller. However, the ResultFontFamily always contains the original value. I was expecting it to have the value the user selected. What am I missing?

  • HTML/JS/CSS issue getting bigger by itself

    - by Azzyh
    Here's the picture to begin with. I have this check box, that when you check, then with jQuery toggle(); it hides that you see in first half of the picture (#writeComment) and shows #SCtryVOTE (what you see in the other half picture, to the right). Now i dont know why but of some reason it expands when its checked, why i dont know, is it because it needs more place than it have or? how do i make this work without having problems when its checked. Here's coding: $('#tryout').click(function () { $('#writeComment').toggle(!$(this).attr('checked')); $('#SCtryVOTE').toggle($(this).attr('checked')); }); the js jquery script part, heres the table and divs HTML part: <input type="checkbox" id="tryout"> <table align="center" width="400" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1" id="theBoxer"> <tr style="background: #686868;"> <td align="center" valign="top" width="70" height="25" style="border:1px #FFF solid;">Opret</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="70" height="25" style="border:1px #FFF solid;">Opret</td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" width="70" height="112" style=""> TEST </td> <td align="left" valign="top" width="70" height="112" style=""> <div id="writeComment"> Smid en kommentar:<br> <form action="javascript:DoInsert()" method="post"> <textarea id="kommentar" name="kommentar"></textarea><br /> <input type="hidden" name="fID" id="fID" value="<? echo $_GET["id"]; ?>"> <input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Sæt ind!"> </form> </div> <div id="SCtryVOTE" style="display: none;"> <form onsubmit="if (!this.comment.cleared) clearContents( document.getElementById('comment') ); return true;" action="javascript:DoSCInsert()" method="post"> <textarea onfocus=" javascript:clearContents(this); this.cleared=true;" rows="5" cols="40" id="comment" name="comment" <?php if($vis["username"] == $pusername) { echo "DISABLED"; } ?>>Tryk for at skrive. Skal være detaljeret og grundet.</textarea> <br>Ja: <input type="radio" value="Y" id="SCvoteY" name="vote"></input> Nej: <input type="radio" id="SCvoteN" value="N" name="vote"> </input> <input type="submit" id="SCstem" name="Submit" value="Stem!"> </form> </div> Maybe you need the CSS part too for these two boxes: #writeComment{ position: relative; left: 5px; top: 10px; } #SCtryVOTE{ position: relative; left: 5px; top: 10px; }

  • Loop results executing twice

    - by ozzysmith
    I creating a simple site with PHP where the users can submit blogs and other users (who are logged in) can post comments on them. I have made a link called "comments" below each blog that when clicked will show / hide all the comments relevant to the specific blog (also if the user is logged in, it will show a form field in which they can submit new comments). So basically each blog will have multiple comments. I have done two different codes for this but they both have the same problem that each comment appears twice (everything else works fine). Could anyone point out why? mysql_select_db ("ooze"); $result = mysql_query ("select * from blog") or die(mysql_error()); $i = 1; while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { echo "<h1>$row[title]</h1>"; echo "<p class ='second'>$row[blog_content]</p> "; echo "<p class='meta'>Posted by .... &nbsp;&bull;&nbsp; $row[date] &nbsp;&bull;&nbsp; <a href='#' onclick=\"toggle_visibility('something$i'); return false\">Comments</a><div id='something$i' style='display: none;'>"; $i++; $a = $row["ID"]; $result2 = mysql_query ("select * from blog, blogcomment where $a=blogID") or die(mysql_error()); while($sub = mysql_fetch_array($result2)) { echo "<p class='third' >$sub[commentdate] &nbsp;&bull;&nbsp; $sub[username]</p><p>said:</p> <p>$sub[comment]</p>"; } if ( isset ($_SESSION["gatekeeper"])) { echo '<form method="post" name="result_'.$row["ID"].'" action="postcomment.php"><input name="ID" type = "hidden" value = "'.$row["ID"].'" /><input name="comment" id="comment" type="text" style="margin-left:20px;"/><input type="submit" value="Add comment" /></form>'; } else { echo '<p class="third"><a href="register.html">Signup </a>to post a comment</p>'; } echo "</div>"; } mysql_close($conn); //second version of inner loop:// if ( isset ($_SESSION["gatekeeper"])) { while($sub = mysql_fetch_array($result2)) { echo "<p class='third' >$sub[commentdate] &nbsp;&bull;&nbsp; $sub[username] said:</p> <p>$sub[comment]</p>"; } echo '<form method="post" name="result_'.$row["ID"].'" action="postcomment.php"><input name="ID" type = "hidden" value = "'.$row["ID"].'" /><input name="comment" id="comment" type="text" style="margin-left:20px;"/><input type="submit" value="Add comment" /></form>'; } else { while($sub = mysql_fetch_array($result2)) { echo "<p class='third' >$sub[commentdate] &nbsp;&bull;&nbsp; $sub[username] said:</p> <p>$sub[comment]</p>"; } echo '<p class="third"><a href="register.html">Signup </a>to post a comment</p>'; } echo "</div>"; } mysql_close($conn);

  • How to force a page refresh or reload in jQuery?

    - by TimMac
    The code below displays a google map and search results when you enter an address and hit the submit button. I've been playing with it to try and force the page to completely refresh or reload once you hit the submit button. But I can't get it to work right. It loads the results "in page," but I'd like the page to completely refresh when the results load, like when you hit the back button on your browser. Hope that makes sense. I think the answer lies in this line of code but I don't know jquery very well. It's near the bottom of the full code below. <script type="text/javascript"> (function($) { $(document).ready(function() { load();'; Here's the full code below. Any help would be greatly appreciated! <?php /* SimpleMap Plugin display-map.php: Displays the Google Map and search results */ $to_display = ''; if ($options['display_search'] == 'show') { $to_display .= ' <div id="map_search" style="width: '.$options['map_width'].';"> <a name="map_top"></a> <form onsubmit="searchLocations(\''.$categories.'\'); return false;" name="searchForm" id="searchForm" action="http://'.$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'].'"> <input type="text" id="addressInput" name="addressInput" class="address" />&nbsp; <select name="radiusSelect" id="radiusSelect">'; $default_radius = $options['default_radius']; unset($selected_radius); $selected_radius[$default_radius] = ' selected="selected"'; foreach ($search_radii as $value) { $r = (int)$value; $to_display .= '<option valu e="'.$value.'"'.$selected_radius[$r].'>'.$value.' This tiny snippet of code show you how to have your select lists autopostback its containing form when the selected value changes. When the DOM is fully loaded, we get all select nodes that have an attribute of “data-autopostback” with a value of “true”. We wire up the “change” JavaScript event to all these select nodes. This event is fired as soon as the user changes their selection with the mouse.  When the event is fired, we find the closest form tag for the select node that raised the event and submit the form. $(document).ready(function () { $("select:[data-autopostback=true]").change(function () { $(this).closest("form").submit(); }); }); A select tag with autopostback enabled will look like this <select id="selCategory" name="Category" data-autopostback="true"> <option value='1'>Electronics</option> <option value='2'>Books</option> </select> The reason I am using “data-" suffix in the attribute is to be HTML5 Compliant. A custom data attribute is an attribute in no namespace whose name starts with the string "data-", has at least one character after the hyphen, is XML-compatible, and contains no characters in the range U+0041 to U+005A (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A to LATIN CAPITAL LETTER Z). The snippet can be used with any HTML page.

  • Fun Visual Studio 2010 Wallpapers

    - by ScottGu
    Two weeks ago I blogged about a cool new site that allows you to download and customize the Visual Studio code editor background and text colors (for both VS 2008 and VS 2010 version). The site also allows you to submit and share your own Visual Studio color schemes with others. Another new community site has recently launched that allows you to download Visual Studio 2010 themed images that you can use for your Windows desktop background.  You can visit the site here: http://vs2010wallpapers.com/  In addition to browsing and downloading Visual Studio themed wallpapers, you can also submit your own into the gallery to share with others. [In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Browsing Wallpaper Images The site has dozens of wallpaper images that you can browse through and choose from.  They range from the cool and abstract: To the fun and silly: Enabling the Wallpaper Images as your Windows Desktop You can zoom in on any image (hover over the image and then click the “zoom” button that appears over it) and then download it to be your Windows desktop image.  If you visit the site using Internet Explorer, you can also zoom in on the image, then right click on the image and choose the “Set as Background” context menu item to enable it as your Windows desktop. Note: you want to make sure you download the zoomed-in/high resolution version of the wallpaper to make sure it looks good as the wallpaper on your desktop. Hope this helps, Scott

  • HTML5 Form Validation

    - by Stephen.Walther
    The latest versions of Google Chrome (16+), Mozilla Firefox (8+), and Internet Explorer (10+) all support HTML5 client-side validation. It is time to take HTML5 validation seriously. The purpose of the blog post is to describe how you can take advantage of HTML5 client-side validation regardless of the type of application that you are building. You learn how to use the HTML5 validation attributes, how to perform custom validation using the JavaScript validation constraint API, and how to simulate HTML5 validation on older browsers by taking advantage of a jQuery plugin. Finally, we discuss the security issues related to using client-side validation. Using Client-Side Validation Attributes The HTML5 specification discusses several attributes which you can use with INPUT elements to perform client-side validation including the required, pattern, min, max, step, and maxlength attributes. For example, you use the required attribute to require a user to enter a value for an INPUT element. The following form demonstrates how you can make the firstName and lastName form fields required: <!DOCTYPE html> <html > <head> <title>Required Demo</title> </head> <body> <form> <label> First Name: <input required title="First Name is Required!" /> </label> <label> Last Name: <input required title="Last Name is Required!" /> </label> <button>Register</button> </form> </body> </html> If you attempt to submit this form without entering a value for firstName or lastName then you get the validation error message: Notice that the value of the title attribute is used to display the validation error message “First Name is Required!”. The title attribute does not work this way with the current version of Firefox. If you want to display a custom validation error message with Firefox then you need to include an x-moz-errormessage attribute like this: <input required title="First Name is Required!" x-moz-errormessage="First Name is Required!" /> The pattern attribute enables you to validate the value of an INPUT element against a regular expression. For example, the following form includes a social security number field which includes a pattern attribute: <!DOCTYPE html> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Pattern</title> </head> <body> <form> <label> Social Security Number: <input required pattern="^d{3}-d{2}-d{4}$" title="###-##-####" /> </label> <button>Register</button> </form> </body> </html> The regular expression in the form above requires the social security number to match the pattern ###-##-####: Notice that the input field includes both a pattern and a required validation attribute. If you don’t enter a value then the regular expression is never triggered. You need to include the required attribute to force a user to enter a value and cause the value to be validated against the regular expression. Custom Validation You can take advantage of the HTML5 constraint validation API to perform custom validation. You can perform any custom validation that you need. The only requirement is that you write a JavaScript function. For example, when booking a hotel room, you might want to validate that the Arrival Date is in the future instead of the past: <!DOCTYPE html> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Constraint Validation API</title> </head> <body> <form> <label> Arrival Date: <input id="arrivalDate" type="date" required /> </label> <button>Submit Reservation</button> </form> <script type="text/javascript"> var arrivalDate = document.getElementById("arrivalDate"); arrivalDate.addEventListener("input", function() { var value = new Date(arrivalDate.value); if (value < new Date()) { arrivalDate.setCustomValidity("Arrival date must be after now!"); } else { arrivalDate.setCustomValidity(""); } }); </script> </body> </html> The form above contains an input field named arrivalDate. Entering a value into the arrivalDate field triggers the input event. The JavaScript code adds an event listener for the input event and checks whether the date entered is greater than the current date. If validation fails then the validation error message “Arrival date must be after now!” is assigned to the arrivalDate input field by calling the setCustomValidity() method of the validation constraint API. Otherwise, the validation error message is cleared by calling setCustomValidity() with an empty string. HTML5 Validation and Older Browsers But what about older browsers? For example, what about Apple Safari and versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer older than Internet Explorer 10? What the world really needs is a jQuery plugin which provides backwards compatibility for the HTML5 validation attributes. If a browser supports the HTML5 validation attributes then the plugin would do nothing. Otherwise, the plugin would add support for the attributes. Unfortunately, as far as I know, this plugin does not exist. I have not been able to find any plugin which supports both the required and pattern attributes for older browsers, but does not get in the way of these attributes in the case of newer browsers. There are several jQuery plugins which provide partial support for the HTML5 validation attributes including: · jQuery Validation — http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Validation · html5Form — http://www.matiasmancini.com.ar/jquery-plugin-ajax-form-validation-html5.html · h5Validate — http://ericleads.com/h5validate/ The jQuery Validation plugin – the most popular JavaScript validation library – supports the HTML5 required attribute, but it does not support the HTML5 pattern attribute. Likewise, the html5Form plugin does not support the pattern attribute. The h5Validate plugin provides the best support for the HTML5 validation attributes. The following page illustrates how this plugin supports both the required and pattern attributes: <!DOCTYPE html> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>h5Validate</title> <style type="text/css"> .validationError { border: solid 2px red; } .validationValid { border: solid 2px green; } </style> </head> <body> <form id="customerForm"> <label> First Name: <input id="firstName" required /> </label> <label> Social Security Number: <input id="ssn" required pattern="^d{3}-d{2}-d{4}$" title="Expected pattern is ###-##-####" /> </label> <input type="submit" /> </form> <script type="text/javascript" src="Scripts/jquery-1.4.4.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="Scripts/jquery.h5validate.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> // Enable h5Validate plugin $("#customerForm").h5Validate({ errorClass: "validationError", validClass: "validationValid" }); // Prevent form submission when errors $("#customerForm").submit(function (evt) { if ($("#customerForm").h5Validate("allValid") === false) { evt.preventDefault(); } }); </script> </body> </html> When an input field fails validation, the validationError CSS class is applied to the field and the field appears with a red border. When an input field passes validation, the validationValid CSS class is applied to the field and the field appears with a green border. From the perspective of HTML5 validation, the h5Validate plugin is the best of the plugins. It adds support for the required and pattern attributes to browsers which do not natively support these attributes such as IE9. However, this plugin does not include everything in my wish list for a perfect HTML5 validation plugin. Here’s my wish list for the perfect back compat HTML5 validation plugin: 1. The plugin would disable itself when used with a browser which natively supports HTML5 validation attributes. The plugin should not be too greedy – it should not handle validation when a browser could do the work itself. 2. The plugin should simulate the same user interface for displaying validation error messages as the user interface displayed by browsers which natively support HTML5 validation. Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer all display validation errors in a popup. The perfect plugin would also display a popup. 3. Finally, the plugin would add support for the setCustomValidity() method and the other methods of the HTML5 validation constraint API. That way, you could implement custom validation in a standards compatible way and you would know that it worked across all browsers both old and new. Security It would be irresponsible of me to end this blog post without mentioning the issue of security. It is important to remember that any client-side validation — including HTML5 validation — can be bypassed. You should use client-side validation with the intention to create a better user experience. Client validation is great for providing a user with immediate feedback when the user is in the process of completing a form. However, client-side validation cannot prevent an evil hacker from submitting unexpected form data to your web server. You should always enforce your validation rules on the server. The only way to ensure that a required field has a value is to verify that the required field has a value on the server. The HTML5 required attribute does not guarantee anything. Summary The goal of this blog post was to describe the support for validation contained in the HTML5 standard. You learned how to use both the required and the pattern attributes in an HTML5 form. We also discussed how you can implement custom validation by taking advantage of the setCustomValidity() method. Finally, I discussed the available jQuery plugins for adding support for the HTM5 validation attributes to older browsers. Unfortunately, I am unaware of any jQuery plugin which provides a perfect solution to the problem of backwards compatibility.

  • How to advertise (free) software?

    - by nebukadnezzar
    I'm not sure if this fits on SO, but other SE sites don't seem to fit either, so I understand when this question gets moved, Although I'd like to avoid getting it closed due to being offtopics, since I think that this question might fit, considering this part of the FAQ: Stack Overflow is for professional and enthusiast programmers, ... covers … a specific programming problem ... matters that are unique to the programming profession Sorry for the lengthy Introduction, though. When Software is advertised, it is usually Software for one (or more) specific purpose, such as: Mozilla Firefox - A Web Browser Ubuntu - An Operating System Python - A Programming Language Visual Studio - A Development Studio ... And so on. But when writing Libraries, that is, Software that doesn't necessarily serve one specific purpose, but instead multiple purposes, which are usually supposed to be used inside an application, such as: Irrlicht - A 3D Engine Qt - An Application Framework I'm a developer of the latter kind of Software, and I naturally want to advertise my Software. It's not commercial Software; It's not GPL either. It's completely free (Licensed under the MIT License :-)). I naturally host my stuff at github, which technically makes it very easy to access the software, and I thought that these might be possible options, although I have no experience with them: Submit the Software to Freshmeat, and hope for the best Submit the Software to Sourceforge, and hope someone accidently stumbles over it Write spammails, and get death threats via Mail ... But something tells me that these methods are probably not the best Methods. So, my final question would be, How does the Average Joe Hobby Programmer advertise his/her Software Library? Yes, I know this question is probably getting closed due to being Offtopic on SO. But maybe a move might be better instead.

  • Interacting with clients using project management systems

    - by Keyo
    I work in web development, that involves a lot of smaller custom projects rather than one large product. Requirements and specifications are always coming from outside the company. We've setup a ticket tracking system (Active Collab, which is rubbish compared to redmine btw) and given access to clients so they can submit issues. The idea being that less time is taken up with long phone conversations and emails. I think it can work really well if done right. However I'm not so sure it's always a good thing. Feature requests have gone up a lot on some projects. The system also needs to be friendly to non-developers while having the many features that developers use. Developers' tickets do not always map 1-to-1 with the tickets clients will create. So the requirements and broader tickets need to be separated from the more specific developer (specification) related tickets. Perhaps we could use two systems, one for clients to submit their requirements or describe a bug, and one for developers to create tickets like implement method x in class y. Maybe this can be achieved by structuring tickets into more appropriate categories or creating sub-tickets under a feature request ticket. I've briefly looked into Pivotal Tracker and it has a fundamentally different workflow. I would like to know how others are communicating with clients and keeping the technical workflow separate from the non-technical workflow. What tools do you use and how do you use them?

  • Yahoo sitemap validation

    - by Joel
    Hello, I am trying to submit sitemap.xml (index) to Yahoo Site Explorer but with no luck. I tried using website feed option in the site explorer to submit the sitemap, but I got validation errors. However, when submitting the same sitemap to google webmaster tools, the sitemap was validated successfully. Could it be for the fact that I am using sitemap with image tag: <image:image> <image:loc>http://www.domain.com/pic.jpg</image:loc> <image:title>picture</image:title> </image:image> When I tried validating the sitemap with inline tools such as http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html and http://www.w3.org/2001/03/webdata/xsv the error I received was: Attempt to load a schema document from http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1 (source: new namespace) for http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1, failed: Not recognised as W3C XML Schema or RDDL: html However, the declaration of the sitemap I use in the top of the document is the same as suggested by Google on their official page at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=178636 : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:image="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap-image/1.1"> <url> Any ideas how to resolve this issue? The title attribute does not work this way with the current version of Firefox. If you want to display a custom validation error message with Firefox then you need to include an x-moz-errormessage attribute like this: <input required title="First Name is Required!" x-moz-errormessage="First Name is Required!" /> The pattern attribute enables you to validate the value of an INPUT element against a regular expression. For example, the following form includes a social security number field which includes a pattern attribute: <!DOCTYPE html> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Pattern</title> </head> <body> <form> <label> Social Security Number: <input required pattern="^\d{3}-\d{2}-\d{4}$" title="###-##-####" /> </label> <button>Register</button> </form> </body> </html> The regular expression in the form above requires the social security number to match the pattern ###-##-####: Notice that the input field includes both a pattern and a required validation attribute. Entering a value into the arrivalDate field triggers the input event. • Application Lifecycle Management Tools

    - by John K. Hines
    Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work! • Confused about application submission

    - by snowflake
    I finished my app but I'm totally confused about how to submit it to launchpad and the software center. I'm also new to launchpad. 1) I created a project at launchpad and synchronized an OpenPGP key via the password tool. This was about 30 minutes ago but launchpad still shows "No OpenPGP keys registered." Is this normal? 2) What I have to do next with the PPA? 3) How do I submit my app? Do I have to adjust files with the PPA? The showdown blog shows that quickly submitubuntu is enough but here in the forum I read about quickly release or quickly share. So which one is correct? 4) Do I have to add this file to launchpad as well? 5) Do I get a confirmation that my app was correctly submitted and take part of the contest? Since I do it for first time I want to be sure that everything is ok. I'm sorry for all my questions and I know that there are many topics about it but everywhere something different is written and I'm confused how to proceed. Thanks in advance!
