  • Is it possible to rename an open Word document without closing it?

    I just ask this question as I do not believe that after so many versions of Word, it wouldn't exist. Usually when I'm working on a document and I realize I have to rename it, I have to close the document down, go to file explorer and then rename it, and then opening it up again. It's a procedure that's so ingrained in my usage pattern that I didn't realize until now that I'm actually having to open and close multiple windows/ applications etc. simply to rename a file. Surely, it's the year 2012, I should be able to do a simple thing like that with a few clicks right? So is there a way to just rename the file name of a word /excel / office document without having to close it first?

  • Changing Word mail merge data source locations in bulk?

    I've just moved a number of Word mail merge files, and a number of Excel spreadsheets that are the data sources for the mail merges, from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7 computer, and now all the paths for the merge sources are incorrect (used to be c:\documents and settings\user\my documents.... now c:\users\documents....). While I can correct the path of the data source in each file individually, I was hoping that there would be some way of updating the files in bulk, as there are a relatively large number of them. Word 2007 is what is being used, but the documents are all in the previous DOC format (not DOCX).

  • Can I cycle through instances of a style selected via the MS Word styles pane?

    Often when I have many co-authors on a MS Word document I find that some of them don't use the styles I've defined for the document, but have achieved similar formatting manually. This results in many styles listed as "in use", each with perhaps only a handful of instances. Word will highlight these instances for me, but then find myself browsing the entire document to check whether they need correcting or are special cases. This can be a particular pain for a long document and when these style fragments occur in the white space between words or paragraphs. Is there a way to cycle through the highlighted instances of a particular style rather than having to hunt for them visually?

  • How do I create ruled lines in Word 2007?

    My aim is to set up Word to use the 'Cornell Notetaking method', and I would like to be able to have 'ruled lines' as part of my page in word. Currently, I have a split textbox, however obviously this does not allow the text to flow between lines. The underlining method does not work well enough, and I had read something about a college ruled template, however I was not able to find that. So is there any solution at all - by either creating lines in the textbox, or making the text flow between textbox rows?

  • How to "demote" all titles and headings in Word 2010?

    I built a large help document for an application I wrote. I used all the default styles in Word 2010, including "Title", "Heading 1", "Heading 2", etc. Sadly, when I generated the Table of Contents, Titles were not included. I'm also now using chmProcessor to automatically generate a website from the document, and it's not including Titles in its Table of Contents either. I'd like to make all Titles into Heading 1s, all Heading 1s into Heading 2s, and Heading 2s into Heading 3s, etc. Is this possible without a huge manual effort? (I'm sure there's a better word than "demote" for this.)

  • Microsoft word 2003 when I am making deletions or changes they show up on the document in a balloon

    I am writing a novel in microsoft word 2003, and I am pretty far into it, but one time I hit a one of the F keys (I don't know which one) by accident. Now everytime I go on word I have these stupid balloons with writing in them and all my deletions and everything are highlighted shown. I looked up on google how to stop this and I did as it says, and it worked the balloon with the deletions and all the changes dissapeared, but next time I opened up the document they were back, and they always keep coming back, so when I send my document to anyone it shows them all my deletions and changes I made to the document. Can anyone help please. Thanks

  • In Word 2010, how can I insert a control that updates a document property when the content is edited?

    In Word 2010 you can insert document properties from the Insert ribbon. For example: Insert > Text > Quick Parts > Document Property > Subject If you do this a control will be added with the following placeholder text: [Subject] Notice the square brackets around the word Subject. These square brackets are not present in the placeholder text for manually inserted controls (which can be inserted using the Developer ribbon). When a user opens the document, replaces the placeholder text with his own text, the document metadata is updated. This behavior is different from a field which can only be updated by first updating the metadata. Unfortunately the range of document properties that can be added to the document is limited, and I would like to add other (custom) properties this way as well. How can I manually insert a control that will update document metadata with the content entered in the control?

  • How do I change the colors used in MS Word 2007 track changes?

    I'm reviewing a document in MS Word 2007, and when I add comments, the bubble has red text on a slightly lighter red background. This is pretty hard to read. The Track Changes Options dialog isn't of much help, I can change the background color for Comments, and it's slightly more readable. But I know that Word assigns a color to each user who reviews the document, I'd like to be able to change mine to a different one, and still have it work properly when I pass the document on to others. MS help is useless.

  • No Preview Images in File Open Dialogs on Windows 7

    I’ve been updating some file uploader code in my photoalbum today and while I was working with the uploader I noticed that the File Open dialog using Silverlight that handles the file selections didn’t allow me to ever see an image preview for image files. It sure would be nice if I could preview the images I’m about to upload before selecting them from a list. Here’s what my list looked like: This is the Medium Icon view, but regardless of the views available including Content view only icons are showing up. Silverlight uses the standard Windows File Open Dialog so it uses all the same settings that apply to Explorer when displaying content. It turns out that the Customization options in particular are the problem here. Specifically the Always show icons, never thumbnails option: I had this option checked initially, because it’s one of the defenses against runaway random Explorer views that never stay set at my preferences. Alas, while this setting affects Explorer views apparently it also affects all dialog based views in the same way. Unchecking the option above brings back full thumbnailing for all content and icon views. Here’s the same Medium Icon view after turning the option off: which obviously works a whole lot better for selection of images. The bummer of this is that it’s not controllable at the dialog level – at least not in Silverlight. Dialogs obviously have different requirements than what you see in Explorer so the global configuration is a bit extreme especially when there are no overrides on the dialog interface. Certainly for Silverlight the ability to have previews is a key feature for many applications since it will be dealing with lots of media content most likely. Hope this helps somebody out.   • MVVM Light V4b1 for Windows 8 Consumer Preview (with installer)

    I just pushed the following to Codeplex: A new MVVM Light project template for Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This template appears in the File, New Project dialog and allows you to create a Metro style app already wired with MVVM Light. An updated Windows 8 installer for MVVM Light. Preconditions: This installs MVVM Light for Windows 8 only. You can install it side-by-side with the standard MVVM Light for Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone. Where do I get it? You can download the MSI from: http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/releases/view/85317 What does it do? The installer installs the Windows 8 version of the MVVM Light DLLs, as well as a new project template for an MVVM Light Metro style app, and code snippets. What is missing? Since Windows 8 Developer Preview, I worked on porting the DispatcherHelper class, and it works now. However the EventToCommand behavior is still not available on Windows 8 (because behaviors are not supported on Windows 8 for the moment). Known issues Some testers reported issues with the code snippets installation. Code snippets should appear when you type “mvvm” in your C# code, there is a list of mvvm-prefixed snippets (such as mvvminpc, etc).   • Help with "advanced" shell scripting | how to create an image preview of a pdf

    First of all, sorry for my english: i'm not british/american. Here is my problem. I've got a folder named pdf with lots of files pdf inside it. I've got another folder named thumbnail, which is empty. I want to create jpg images preview of each pdf to use them in my HTML webpages as previews of the pdf. To do this I'm using a software called IMAGEMAGICK. I tried to put the code inside my PHP files to get the purpose, but it doesn't work. As you understood, I have created a small search engine with apache, mysql to search for pdf locally (offline). Now I want to add a "preview" of the first page of pdfs. Instead, it works by bash command line and the code is: convert pdf/name_of_the_file_pdf.pdf[0] name_of_the_imagefile.jpg (The zero stands for that the image is taken from the FIRST page of pdf) How can i make a script that takes each name of pdf files and put it into that code???? To list all the file, I did ls >pdf but with the little knowledge I have I can't go further.... Some pdf's names contain spaces....Is that a problem? PDF files are so many that i can't do the task typing every name,it wouldn't be a nice and clever work!!!! Thanks a lot in advance!!!

    In an effort to get ARM developers testing Java SE 8 before the scheduled release later this year a Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM has been made available. This release has been tested on the Raspberry PI but should work on other ARM platforms. In addition to the new Java SE features, this release provides specific support of hard float GPU on the Raspberry PI. The support for hard float GPU has been anticipated by a number of developers. Additionally, this release includes support of an optimized JavaFX. Specific configurations of JDK 8 on ARM are defined below: Java FX is supported on ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) Supported platforms without Java FX: ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) ARM architecture v7 (VFP, little endian) ARM architecture v5 (soft float, little endian) Linux x86 The download page includes setup instructions for a Raspberry PI device as well as demos and samples.   • Windows phone 8.1 emulator not loading OS

    I am trying to launch the emulator (Emulator 8.1 WVGA 4 inch 512 MB, or any other as a matter of fact) but it fails to launch. It goes to the "Loading OS" screen then throws an error box with the text "DEP6100". On VS, it says at the bottom Error1 Error : DEP6100 : The following unexpected error occurred during bootstrapping stage 'Connecting to the device': ObjectDisposedException - 0x80131622 and Error2 Error : DEP6100 : The following unexpected error occurred during bootstrapping stage 'Connecting to the device': ObjectDisposedException - 0x80131622 Looked in the internet but haven't found an answer yet. Can you please help? Please let me know what additional information you need.

  • error C2512 in precompiled header file?

    I'm having a ridiculously strange problem. When I try to run the program below, there's an error message that says: "error C2512: 'Record' : no appropriate default constructor available". And when I double-click it, it directs me to a precompiled read-only header file named "xmemory0". Do they expect me to change a read-only file?   • Entity Framework Duplicate type name within an assembly (6.1.0)

    I am not sure what is going on but I keep getting the following exception when doing a query. "Duplicate type name within an assembly." I have not been able to find a solution on the web. I had resolved the issue by removing entity framework from all the projects in the solutions and re-installing using nugget. Then all of the sudden the exception is back. I have verified my table schema over and over and find nothing wrong with. This is the query causing the exception. var BaseQuery = from Users in db.Users join UserInstalls in db.UserTenantInstalls on Users.ID equals UserInstalls.UserID join Installs in db.TenantInstalls on UserInstalls.TenantInstallID equals Installs.ID where Users.Username == Username && Users.Password == Password && Installs.Name == Install select Users; var Query = BaseQuery.Include("UserTenantInstalls.TenantInstall"); return Query.FirstOrDefault(); As I mentioned previously the same query was working before.   • NUnit - Multiple properties of the same name? Linking to requirements

    I'm linking all our our System Tests to test cases and to our Requirements. Every requirement has an ID. Every Test Case / System Tests tests a variety of requirements. Every module of code links to multiple requirements. I'm trying to find the best way to link every system test to its driving requirements. I was hoping to do something like: [NUnit.Framework.Property("Release", "6.0.0")] [NUnit.Framework.Property("Requirement", "FR50082")] [NUnit.Framework.Property("Requirement", "FR50084")] [NUnit.Framework.Property("Requirement", "FR50085")] [TestCase(....)] public void TestSomething(string a, string b...) However, that will break because Property is a Key-Value pair. The system will not allow me to have multiple Properties with the same key. The reason I'm wanting this is to be able to test specific requirements in our system if a module changes that touches these requirements. Rather than run over 1,000 system tests on every build, this would allow us to target what to test based on changes done to our code. Some system tests run upwards of 5 minutes (Enterprise healthcare system), so "Just run all of them" isn't a viable solution. We do that, but only before promoting through our environments. Thoughts?

  • Circular Reference for Parent Link on Work Item cannot be resolved by Retry

    I receive the following error; OH-TFS-Connector-0051: Operation failed getCollectionMetaData. Server Error : TF201063: Adding a Parent link to work item 1737 would result in a circular relationship. To create this link, evaluate the existing links, and remove one of the other links in the cycle. I have completely flattened out the Work Items in the source project. When retrying the migration the timestamp is modified on the pending errors however the issues are not resolved. These Work Items now have no parents or children in the source project. So I'm wondering if the retry list is no longer valid but there doesn't appear to be a away to have it update? I can run the whole migration again, however it takes 5-7 hours to just do the work items so it would be great if there is a quick fix.

At the moment there is a syntax error using the following code in which it doesn't like the "Left" instruction: X:IIF(len(description) > 5, Left(description, 5) & "....", description) Note: "X" is what i am naming the field 'description' in my query screen in Access
