• apache rewriting url doesn't work(using godaddy hosting)

  I'm using a framework to create my website(codeigniter) by default the urls are like this:mysite.com/index.php?/etc/etc/etc. And I'm trying to remove the index.php?, I tried to remove it by doing this(didn't work): RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php?$1 [L] Note: it's working on my localhost(when putting my website's files in the root directiory). So, Is this issue associated with me or the hosting company(Go Daddy)?

  The past months have flown by since I started working at Oracle; but at the same time it feels like I’ve been here forever. I came to Beijing to find a job after I graduated from The University of Southampton with a MSc in Software Engineering. I got an offer the next day after I had an interview with my manager. This new style of working life hasn’t been a problem with me. The atmosphere here is fantastic and everyone is so friendly and easy to talk to. I am the first member in our AIE China Team. We do appreciate those colleagues from Core I/O team who helped us a lot to familiarize ourselves with the new environment. After hire orientation training I got to know many new people from various teams including Middleware, People Soft and Solaris. Also Oracle provides weekly system online training as additional training for those people who need it. The best thing about working at Oracle is that there is a balance between work and rest. It’s good to have a really nice park and green space near the Oracle buildings. Most of us like to walk around the riverside after lunch before we get back to work. I like to grab a cup of latte before discussing issues and the schedule of our projects in a weekly conference call with my US colleagues. It has been great experience; I am working alongside talented colleagues from different countries and nationalities.   Since Microsoft announced the end of life for WHS, are there any alternatives? Specifically, I am interested in recovering from a catastrophic disk failure with WHS. For example, this is my ideal scenario when a desktop hard-drive fails (has a bad virus, etc): Install a disk of the same size or greater Boot the desktop with the Recovery Disc Point the recovery application at the WHS Pick the machine, the drive(s) and the date of the backup Have a couple beers Reboot to a working machine as if nothing happened. I would need to slap multiple disks in the machine without raid. It sounds like LVM will work here. It would be nice, but not required to have de-duplication of files when multiple machines are backed up. (Single Instance Storage)

• Copying files to zfs mountpoint doesn't work - the files aren't actually copied to the other filesystem,

  I have 3 x 4 TB disks in a NAS that I want to group together and access as if they were one whole 'unit' of some kind. I also have a 250GB disk containing the OS - this is full of films and tv shows currently. I thought zfs sounded good so I created a raidz zpool, after installing the ppa sudo zpool create store raidz /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd and set the mountpoint to /mnt/store sudo zfs set mountpoint=/mnt/store /store checked it was successful - I think it was sudo zfs list NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT store 266K 7.16T 170K /mnt/store Then I wanted to move over a whole load of files from my home directory. I went to where the to-be-copied folder was (called media) and entered sudo cp -R * /mnt/store cp: cannot create directory `/mnt/store/media': No space left on device It seems like it's not copying over to the new filesystem I made (or thought I did). I've never really done this type of thing until a few days ago so may be running before I can walk... is this not the right way to copy files across? I've only used windows before so the idea of mountpoints is a bit mind boggling. I'm using XBMCbuntu 12 beta 2.0 which is based on 12.04. Will retry with normal Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to see if that's the problem. thanks for the help!

• library put in /usr/local/lib is not loaded

  Let me state in advance: One might think this question would is for server fault, but I think is is Ubuntu (config) specific. In short: I have put libwkhtmltox.so in /usr/local/lib as stated in installation instructions linked below, but it appears the library is not loaded. I am trying to install php-wkhtmltox, a php extension for wkhtmltox on my local desktop (Ubuntu 12.04). I have extracted the source and changed to the corresponding directory. After running phpize, ./configure fails at checking for libwkhtmltox support... yes, shared not found configure: error: Please install libwkhtmltox I suspect the reason the library is not loaded is that the path is not checked!? how do I proceed?   This week we've downed our tools and organised ourselves into small project teams or struck out alone. We're working on whatever we like, with whoever we like, wherever we like. We've called it Down Tools week and so far it's a blast. It all started a few months ago with an idea from Neil, our CEO. Neil wanted to capture the excitement, innovation, and productivity of Coding by the Sea and extend this to all Red Gaters working in Product Development. A brainstorm is always a good place to start for an "anything goes" project. Half of Red Gate piled into our largest meeting room (it's pretty big) armed with flip charts, post its and a heightened sense of possibility. An hour or so later our SQL Servery walls were covered in project ideas. So what would you do, if you could work on anything you wanted? Many projects are related to tools we already make, others are for internal product development use and some are, well, just something completely different. Someone suggested we point a web cam at the SQL Servery lunch queue so we can check it before heading to lunch. That one couldn't wait for Down Tools Week. It was up and running within a few days and even better, it captures the table tennis table too. Thursday is the Show and Tell - I am looking forward to seeing what everyone has come up with. Some of the projects will turn into new products or features so this probably isn't the time or place to go into detail of what is being worked on. Rest assured, you'll hear all about it! We're making a video as we go along too which will be up on our website as soon. In the meantime, all meetings are cancelled, we've got plenty of food in and people are being very creative with the £500 expenses budget (Richard, do you really need an iPad?). It's brilliant to see it all coming together from the idea stage to reality. Catch up with our progress by following #downtoolsweek on Twitter. Who knows, maybe a future Red Gate flagship tool is coming to life right now? By the way, it's business as usual for our customer facing and internal operations teams. • Can't get Wireless RT2x00usb driver to work, and can't blacklist it

  After a two year hiatus to Linux, I try it again out again. And then I run into to driver issues... I have an old Linksys WUSB54G v4 Wireless USB Adapter. In previous versions I had to use a combination of Ndiswrapper and Wicd to hope of getting it working. In 10.10, apparently there are built in drivers for it. Unfortunately they don't work. Fails to connect to my WPA network, fails to connect to my open unencrypted network. Wicd fails at "Obtaining IP address" or when using static IPs fails at verifying connectivity to network. Getting fed up I tried the ndiswrapper approach. Installed and configured, but still not working, even when blacklisting the rt2570 module. • Install of mod_proxy to get ProxyPass to work

  I've been trying to follow these instructions, so that I could get the Citadel mail server to work alongside Apache, but I get an error when I try to restart Apache: Invalid command 'ProxyPass', ... I was told in the Apache docs that this is from the mod_proxy module, but apt-get install mod_proxy gives E: Couldn't find package mod_proxy, and I was unable to find it on the big list on the Apache site. What do I need to do to get the ProxyPass working in Ubuntu 10.04 TLS?

• Boot from external usb hdd won't work in 12.04

  I've been running 10.04 on an external USB HDD without problems for years. I installed 12.04 on an external USB HDD and it worked until I upgraded to all the new packages. But after that it wouldn't boot. I just got into the grub prompt. So then I tried installing on the disk inside the computer and that worked fine. But when I take it out and use it as an external USB HDD I just get: error: hd0 out of disk. grub rescue> How can I fix this? So why do I want this you might wonder? Well I have a laptop at home and a somewhat similar at work. And I just move the disk between them and don't have to move a heavy laptop. So I really hope I can continue doing this with 12.04! The old disk is only 80Gb but the new one is 320Gb (7200rpm Toshiba). I'm using 12.04 on a 64Gb SSD as an external drive and it warns about out of disk but it boots anyway most of the times.

• Pulling changes from master to my work branch?

  There's two of us working on something. We're using this branch structure master dev-A dev-B We both work on separate branches (dev-A,B) and whenever we're done - we promote our changes to master. But the drawback of this is we can't get changes the other developer makes. Everything exists in the master tree - but we can't get the latest updates the other developer made. Is there a way to resolve this or should we change our branch structure (per feature?)?

• Nvidia GT218 repository drivers don't work

  I upgraded all packages with sudo apt-get upgrade command on my Ubuntu 10.04 box and I have Ubuntu 12.04 3.2.0-29-generic-pae now. I have two monitors and the following GPU: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [NVS 300] (rev a2) After upgrading to 12.04, I somehow lost my previous setup with one common workspace stretched across two monitors. When Ubuntu starts only one monitor is on. I can see the message on the active monitor: Not optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1680x1050 60Hz I used Nvidia proprietary drivers on 10.04 but now jockey-text --list shows: xorg:nvidia_current - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) xorg:nvidia_current_updates - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (Proprietary, Enabled, Not in use) When I run sudo nvidia-settings it says You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.' I typed nvidia-xconfig and rebooted, but jockey-text --list says the same after the reboot: Not in use. The same with nvidia-current - Enabled but Not in use. I also tried nvidia-173 but I ended up in tty immediately at startup so I removed it. I used to have some problems with Nvidia proprietary drivers on 10.04, I had to put paths to EDID files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf explicitly, but the resolution was as recommended and both monitors were working. Mouse cursor is invisible if it's placed inside Firefox window, and only one monitor is working. I like open source and if it's possible I'd prefer to use nouveau drivers but a few things should be fixed. I'm curious why nvidia-current drivers from the repository don't work now. I read it has something to do with the new X11 server in Ubuntu 12.04, is it true? How can I get it back to work?

• Headphones don't work on an Acer Aspire 5920g

  All the problems I read about were all about the sound not working when they plugged the headphones in. I have the problem that my mic will work but the sound is still played on my built-in speakers. When I look at the sound settings, it doesn't give me any options for headphones. I run 12.04 and never had this problem in Windows. I run it on a Acer Aspire 5920g. Any tips or ideas will be very helpful.

• Network: Incoming connections work, outgoing fails

  i recently set up my own server at home to run Ubuntu 12.04 server ed. on booting up, i noticed that a message related to networking comes up, and the booting process pauses. the message read something like - waiting for network configuration and after a while - waiting another 60 seconds... on booting up, I realised that any command which requires a network connection was not working - ping, apt-get install, etc. on firing the ifup eth0 command, I get the error RTNETLINK answers: File exists. Failed to bring up eth0. I also realised, while searching the web for this problem, that this is probably one of the most common networking related issues - however, most of the questions are around setting up multiple IPs for the same machine. ifdown eth0 also fails, stating that eth0 is not configured. my /etc/network/interfaces file has a simple configuration for a static IP: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address xx.xx.xx.xx netmask xx.xx.xx.xx broadcast xx.xx.xx.xx gateway xx.xx.xx.xx dns-nameservers xx.xx.xx.xx The strangest part of this problem is that, while I can't connect to anything outside, I can ping to this particular server using the static IP configured in the interface file, and, i can even SSH into it! I'm really at ends here with this problem, and any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks!

I soppose .fnfxrc file must be available after installation or first fnfx demon lauch. • Trying to turn an old computer into a server. Where do I start?

  My old computer is a mac powerbook g4 that I am considering turning into an Ubuntu Server for my house of eight to share movies and music and whatever. I've never even thought about doing this kind of stuff before so I don't even know where to start. Can someone point me in the right direction? My Concerns: Most of my house mates have macs. • SPC 300nc webcam doesn't work on 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10

  It seems that this solution to webcam problems in Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't work in the 64 bit version. If i run the following command: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype" all i get is: "ld.so: object '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored." and if i try: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype" I get the same problem :( Does anyone have a solution?
