• Ubuntu 12.04 crashing

  We have a server with 2x32gb sas raid 1 and 4x1tb raid 10 + 2x1tb hot spares. Whenever we try to copy the 1tb and 1.5e6 files to a backup location (even just using tty1 cp command) it fails. We have tried using backintime and dejadup, and resorted to a manual cp to an external usb2 HDD. When that failed, we tried installing an internal HDD on the mobo (not on raid) and another cp, which also fails. The failures lock up the system and we are left with an unfortunate hard reboot situation. After reboot, syslog tends to be empty (only containing newly booted data) and we haven't a clue where to start. It has been 3 weeks since our last successful backup and we are getting nervous... -using 3ware raid controller, 8gb ram and nvidia pciexpress graphics with a gigabyte mobo and xeon 4-core processor.

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? Am looking to gather feedback in general, so don't worry if your example is industry/technology specific - so long as it pertains to web. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

• Find slow network nodes between two data centers

  I've got a problem with syncing big amount of data between two data centers. Both machines have got a gigabit connection and are not fully occupied but the fastest that I am able to get is something between 6 and 10 Mbit = not acceptable! Yesterday I made some traceroute which indicates huge load on a LEVEL3 router but the problem exists for weeks now and the high response time is gone (20ms instead of 300ms). How can I trace this to find the actual slow node? Thought about a traceroute with bigger packages but will this work? In addition this problem might not be related to one of our servers as there are much higher transmission rates to other servers or clients. Actually office = server is faster than server <= server! Any idea is appreciated ;) Update We actually use rsync over ssh to copy the files. As encryption tends to have more bottlenecks I tried a HTTP request but unfortunately it is just as slow. We have a SLA with one of the data centers. They said they already tried to change the routing because they say this is related to a cheap network where the traffic gets routed through. It is true that it will route through a "cheapnet" but only the other way around. Our direction goes through LEVEL3 and the other way goes through lambdanet (which they said is not a good network). If I got it right (I'm a network intermediate) they simulated a longer path to force routing through LEVEL3 and they announce LEVEL3 in the AS path. I basically want to know if they're right or they're just trying to abdicate their responsibility. The thing is that the problem exists in both directions (while different routes), so I think it is in the responsibility of our hoster. And honestly, I don't believe that there is a DC2DC connection which only can handle 600kb/s - 1,5 MB/s for weeks! The question is how to detect WHERE this bottleneck is

• 12.04 - how to install alsa 1.0.27, to resolve dell sound card microphone echo issue to local speaker?

  Problem: Microphone in or Line in microphone audio is instantly captured and sinked to the local speaker, cause horrible echo problem About my system: (NO PulseAudio used (cause its always crash and unstable for my system/hardware, so auto killed and never used) I have ALSA 1.0.25 version running in Ubuntu 12.04 / 64-bit, with random kernel installed: kernel 3.5.0-17-generic kernel 3.8.x kernel 3.11.x But the echo problem is not resolved after trying all kernel. So, last option left now is to use ALSA 1.0.27 to see if that solves the problem. Is there any away to use ALSA 1.0.27 from any PPA to install in the Ubuntu 12.04? (without making it from source, to avoid breaking other packages and dependencies)

  For some time now, I've run Firebug constantly enabled to do quick DOM inspections, leaving the Console and Script panels disabled. I'm just starting to use these two features so I don't have to keep using alerts for testing and debugging. I enable them while I use them and turn them back off when I'm done. I'd like to know if these particular features can slow things down such that they shouldn't be left on round-the-clock. Like do they slow down page loads, use inordinate chunks of memory or something? I don't see anything about it in the Firebug wiki.

  Lately, I've been working a lot in PHP and specifically within the WordPress framework. I'm noticing a lot of code in the form of: if ( 1 == $options['postlink'] ) Where I would have expected to see: if ( $options['postlink'] == 1 ) Is this a convention found in certain languages / frameworks? Is there any reason the former approach is preferable to the latter (from a processing perspective, or a parsing perspective or even a human perspective?) Or is it merely a matter of taste? I have always thought it better when performing a test, that the variable item being tested against some constant is on the left. It seems to map better to the way we would ask the question in natural language: "if the cake is chocolate" rather than "if chocolate is the cake".

  I'm developing a game using Box2D (javascript implementation - Box2DWeb), and I would like to know how I can pan the debug draw. I know the usual answer is - don't use debug draw, it's just for debugging. I'm not, however not all my objects are on the same screen, and i'd like to see where they are in the physics representation. How can I pan the debug drawing? As you can see the debug draw stuff, is show on the top left, but it only shows a small part of the world. • How to break out of if statement

  I'm not sure if the title is exactly an accurate representation of what I'm actually trying to ask, but that was the best I could think of. I am experiencing an issue with my character class. I have developed a system so that he can perform chain attacks, and something that was important to me was that 1)button presses during the process of an attack wouldn't interrupt the character, and 2) at the same time, button presses should be stored so that the player can smoothly queue up chain attacks in the middle of one so that gameplay doesn't feel rigid or unresponsive. This all begins when the player presses the punch button. Upon pressing the punch button, the game checks the state of the dpad at the moment of the button press, and then translates the resulting combined buttons into an int which I use as an enumerator relating to a punch method for the character. The enumerator is placed into a List so that the next time the character's Update() method is called, it will execute the next punch in the list. It only executes the next punch if my character is flagged with acceptInput as true. All attacks flag acceptInput as false, to prevent the interruption of attacks, and then at the end of an attack, acceptInput is set back to true. While accepting input, all other actions are polled for, i.e. jumping, running, etc. In runtime, if I attack, and then queue up another attack behind it (by pressing forward+punch) I can see the second attack visibly execute, which should flag acceptInput as false, yet it gets interrupted and my character will stop punching and start running if I am still holding down the dpad. Included is some code for context. • VNC Address Book - Window Invisible? Working as intended?

  I have VNC Server and VNC Viewer on the same PC with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Is VNC Address Book supposed to have a main application window? I can't tell if this is bugged or working as intended. When I start VNC Address book, it creates an item in the task list and also an icon in the notification area. If I click the task list item once, nothing happens. If I click again, it disappears from the task list but remains in the notification area**. If I right-click the icon on the notification area, there is an option 'open address book', which if chosen, creates the item in the task list again, with the exact same behavior. If I left or right click on the address book icon, I have ways to connect to servers in the address book. However I have no way to add/remove/edit servers in the address book. **Note that this behavior is identical to that of an application with a main window where there is an option to 'minimize to system tray / notification area'. Only here, no main window is visible, ever. If fixing this problem is beyond the scope of this site, that's fine, but at this point I have no real way to tell if the program is malfunctioning on my pc or if it is far more minimalist than I expected. There appears to be no forum on realvnc.com where I can ask about this, perhaps this is to prevent me from getting any help unless I pay to register?

  I have a Breakout game in which, at some point, I detect the collision between the ball and the paddle with something like this: // Ball class rectangle.Intersects(paddle.Rectangle); Is there any way I can get the exact coordinates of the collision, or any details about it, with the current XNA API? I thought of doing some basic calculations, such as comparing the exact coordinates of each object on the moment of the collision. It would look something like this: // Ball class if((rectangle.X - paddle.Rectangle.X) < (paddle.Rectangle.Width / 2)) // Collision happened on the left side else // Collision happened on the right side But I'm not sure this is the correct way to do it. • Certificate enrollment request chain not trusted

  I am working on a MSFT lab for Direct Access, and need to create a Web certificate. The instructions ask be to do the following: On EDGE1, click Start, type mmc, and then press ENTER. Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt. Click File, and then click Add/Remove Snap-ins. Click Certificates, click Add, click Computer account, click Next, select Local computer, click Finish, and then click OK. In the console tree of the Certificates snap-in, open Certificates (Local Computer)\Personal\Certificates. Right-click Certificates, point to All Tasks, and then click Request New Certificate. Click Next twice. On the Request Certificates page, click Web Server, and then click More information is required to enroll for this certificate. On the Subject tab of the Certificate Properties dialog box, in Subject name, for Type, select Common Name. In Value, type edge1.contoso.com, and then click Add. Click OK, click Enroll, and then click Finish. In the details pane of the Certificates snap-in, verify that a new certificate with the name edge1.contoso.com was enrolled with Intended Purposes of Server Authentication. Right-click the certificate, and then click Properties. In Friendly Name, type IP-HTTPS Certificate, and then click OK. Close the console window. If you are prompted to save settings, click No. In production, our company has overridden the Web Server template and it doesn't seem to be issuing certificates with the full CA chain. When I look at the issued certificate properties then both tiers of the 2 tier CA hierarchy are missing. How can I fix this? I'm not sure where to look outside the GUI.

• Ubuntu 12.10 - VirtualBox not sharing internet with guest system

  I went from ArchLinux to Ubuntu on my dev box. I use VirtualBox to test web sites on Windows and IE. I have my Windows 7 VirtualBox image running on Ubuntu's VirtualBox. Back with ArchLinux, internet worked "out of the box" on the Windows boxes. I left the default options on the box's Network Options (NAT). The Windows machine shows as "connected to ethernet" but reports: The dns server isn't responding So I can't access Internet from there. I tried searching for Ubuntu's official docs but they seem pretty outdated. I tried using my old boxes from Arch (which boot normally but have no internet) and creating a new box from Ubuntu itself, but still get the same results. Update: I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.18 from Ubuntu's repository (apt-get install virtualbox).

  As the title implies, I want a Button class with an OnClick event handler. It should fire off connected events when it is clicked. I know how to use them but creating them myself is another matter entirely. I've also made buttons without using events that work on a case-by-case basis. So basically, I want to be able to attach methods to the OnClick EventHandler that will fire when the Button is clicked (i.e., the mouse intersects Rec and the left mouse button is clicked).

• Doubts regarding the behaviour of 'autoremove' command and '--auto-remove' flag

  After reading several man pages and forums, I thought that running 'apt-get autoremove' without any following argument removes all unused dependencies left on the system, while running 'apt-get autoremove xxx' removes xxx together with its unused dependencies. However I found this to be not true. Running 'apt-get autoremove xxx' not only removes xxx together with its unused dependencies, it also removes all other unused dependencies. So I tried to run 'apt-get remove --auto-remove xxx', thinking that this would remove only xxx and its unused dependencies. To my surprise, this also removed xxx, its unused dependencies and all other unused dependencies. Is this the intended behaviour of the commands or a bug? Is there any quick way to remove xxx and its unused dependencies without removing other unused dependencies?

• How should a small company administer their web server?

  We currently have our website hosted by a small company that is actually a reseller for Rackspace. They act as our server administrators. They configured the servers, handle the backups, if there is a problem, we call them and they fix it. We are growing and want to move away from our shared server to either a cloud or dedicated server. I am thinking cloud myself but I am open to either. The current company doesn't seem to want to offer us anything more than a shared hosting plan. I looked into cloud solutions at vps.net, with them I would have to be the server administrator myself. I am the website programmer but administering the server is outside my comfort zone. vps.net does have a $99/month plan for Pro-Active Managed Support but I am not sure if this is the equivalent on a server admin that is there when you need them. We could hire someone in house, but I think that would be overkill for our needs. I am not exactly sure what we need, I do know we need as close to 100% uptime as we possible can. and we need the ability to add/remove/change the server configuration/software/etc. when needed (though changes shouldn't be very often once everything is setup right). Can someone point me in the right direction? What do other companies do?

• How do I get the Grub menu back after installing Windows on a separate disk?

  Tried sudo grub-install on sda1 but it complained about being a BAD IDEA. I had to install windows for a work related issue so I used a separate disk (I had used it for ubuntu on this computer, but bought a bigger disk so installed ubuntu on that and left the old one in in case I needed an old file). Windows installed fine but overwrote Grub. So if I choose the Ubuntu disk to boot first in BIOS I get a blank screen. I googled and followed this advice: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows However, when I get down to this section: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444 /dev/sda1 I get this: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea… --recheck does nothing. Any ideas?

Here's the example I have: As you can see in top and bottom left images regardless of the side the of the green car which red car is penetrating the MTV for the red car still remains as a negative number also here is the same example when the front of the red car is facing the opposite direction the number will always be positive. When the red car is past the half way through the green car it should switch polarity. I thought I'd compensated for this in my code, but apparently not either that or it's a bug I can find. • No password is complex enough

  I have one user in my AD domain who seems to not be able to self-select a password. I may have another one, but they're on a different enough password-expiration schedule that I can't remember who it is right now. I can set a password via ADU&C just fine, but when he tries it via C-A-D he gets the "doesn't meet complexity" message. Figuring he was just doing something like 'pAssword32', I did some troubleshooting of my own and sure enough it doesn't want to take a password that way. He's one of our users that habitually uses a local account and then maps drives using his AD credentials so he doesn't get the your password will expire in 4 days, maybe you should change it prompts, so he's a frequent "my password expired, can you fix it" flyer. I don't want to keep having him set it via ADU&C over my shoulder every N days. I'm just fine setting temp passwords of 48 characters of keyboard-slamming and letting him change it something memorable. My environment is at the Windows 2008 R2 functional level, and I am using fine-grained password policies. In fact, I have two such policies: For normal users (minimum length, remembered passwords) For special utility accounts The password complexities I've tried match both policies for length and char-set selection. The permissions on the User object themselves look normal, SELF does indeed have the "Change Password" right. Is there some other place I should be looking for things that can affect this?

Yukon Optima 88E8059 [PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller with AVB] (rev 11) After system being suspended the sky2 driver loads but does not enable the NIC. I have noticed that it happens when PC is left suspended for longer period of time (few houres) Trying to reproduce it I have tried to load the sky2 driver with 'modprobe sky2'. Unfortunately typing 'ifconfig -a' for the onboard ethernet adapter does not list the driver once the sky2 driver is loaded. I have searched internet and I found some information about a bug in kernel. Hovewer it was reported in 2010 so I hope it has been fixed.   After I installed the GNOME shell in Ubuntu, I decided that I didn't like having the "Close/Minimize/Maximize" buttons on the right, so I switched them over to the left using gconftool-2 --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" --type string "close, minimize, maximize:" After resetting the shell, however, I found that with the GTK+ theme, only the close button shows up. Using system title bar and borders will make all the buttons appear, but I really want to use the theme because the system title bar makes the top bar too thick. Logging out and back in didn't fix it, and I tried reinstalling Chrome, but the problem persists.
