• EF problem with entity re-ordering and uniqueness constraint

  I am using Entity Framework and I've come to an interesting stumbling block. Let's say there is a db table "Item" with "sequence" column of type int (and others of course). Column "sequence" must be unique and it is used for (re)ordering of items. EF maps this table to "Item" class with "sequence" int property. Now let's say I want to swap position of two items by mutually exchanging each other's sequence number. Upon calling SaveChanges() EF throws an exception complaining about "sequence" uniqueness. It probably generates two UPDATEs and the first one probably fails. I assume that plain SQL solution to this issue is using a third UPDATE to introduce a unique sequence value in the process but I am stuck with EF. Any thoughts?

  I'm trying to query a mysql table which places its date in the following format: yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss So it's date and time, and that's all in a single field. Now from php I want to get the time and query the table to only return entries where the date field is less than 24 hours old. I'm having issues with the system because PHPs get time seems to return the values seperately and I'm struggling to figure out how to make it work with mysql queries. This seems fairly simple but I'm quite new to php so sorry if I'm completely missing something..

• MySQL: Transactions across multiple threads

  Preliminary: I have an application which maintains a thread pool of about 100 threads. Each thread can last about 1-30 seconds before a new task replaces it. When a thread end, that thread almost always will result in inserting 1-3 records into a table, this table is used by all of the threads. Right now, no transactional support exists, but I am trying to add that now. So... Goal I want to implement a transaction for this. The rules for whether or not this transaction commits or rollback reside in the main thread. Basically there is a simple function that will return a boolean. Can I implement a transaction across multiple connections? If not, can multiple threads share the same connection? (Note: there are a LOT of inserts going on here, and that is a requirement).

• JPA entitymanager remove operation is not performant

  When I try to do an entityManager.remove(instance) the underlying JPA provider issues a separate delete operation on each of the GroupUser entity. I feel this is not right from a performance perspective, since if a Group has 1000 users there will be 1001 calls issued to delete the entire group and itr groupuser entity. • sql server 2005 indexes and low cardinality

  How does SQL Server determine whether a table column has low cardinality? The reason I ask is because query optimizer would most probably not use an index on a gender column (values 'm' and 'f'). However how would it determine the cardinality of the gender column to come to that decision? On top of this, if in the unlikely event that I had a million entries in my table and only one entry in the gender column was 'm', would SQL server be able to determine this and use the index to retrieve that single row? Or would it just know there are only 2 distinct values in the column and not use the index? I appreciate the above discusses some poor db design, but I'm just trying to understand how query optimizer comes to its decisions. Many thanks.

  I could see nothing wrong with the execution plan. Besides, as I understand it, SQL Server 2000 extended many of the performance benefits of stored procedures to all SQL statements by recognising new T-SQL statements against T-SQL statements of existing execution plans (by retaining execution plans for all SQL statements in the procedure cache, not just stored procedure execution plans) It's a fairly straight forward SELECT statement with sensible table joins, no transactions included or linked servers being referenced within the query and WITH (NOLOCK) table hints applied. The stored procedure was created by dbo and the user has all the necessary permissions. So my question is this: What are the likely reasons for a query to take only a few seconds to run but then take several minutes when identical T-SQL is run via a stored procedure?

In one of the table views, I want to enable swipe-to-delete, so I've implemented tableView:commitEditingStyle:forRowAtIndexPath, and it works as expected. However, in another table, I want to disable that feature. I've got it working by making two UITableViewDataSource classes, one subclassing the other, and I only implement tableView:commitEditingStyle:forRowAtIndexPath in the subclass. I call them RecipientModel and RecipientModelEditable. I'm wondering if there's a better way.

Title="{Binding Name}"> C# public TablePage() { this.DataContext = new Table() { Name = "Finding Table" }; InitializeComponent(); } Getting a ag_e_parser_bad_property_value error in InitializeComponent at the point where the title binding is happening. I've tried adding static text which works fine. If I use binding anywhere else eg: <TextBlock Text="{Binding Name}"/> This doesn't work either. I'm guessing it's complaining because the DataContext object isn't set but if I put in a break point before the InitializeComponent I can confirm it is populated and the Name property is set. Any ideas?

  I am trying to perform broad-phase collision detection with a fixed-grid size approach. Thus, for each entity's position: (x,y,z) (each of type float), I need to find which cell does the entity lie in. I then intend to store all the cells in a hash-table and then iterate through to report (if any) collisions. So, here is what I am doing: Grid-cell's position: (int type) (Gx, Gy, Gz) = (x / M, y / M, z / M) where M is the size of the grid. Once, I have a cell, I'd like to add it to a hash-table with its key being a unique hash based on (Gx, Gy, Gz) and the value being the cell itself. Now, I cannot think of a good hash function and I need some help with that. Can someone please suggest me a good hash function? Thanks

• Counting consecutive items within MS SQL

  Got a problem with a query I'm trying to write. I have a table that lists people that have been sent an email. There is a bit column named Active which is set to true if they have responded. But I need to count the number of consecutive emails the person has been inactive since either their first email or last active email. For example, this basic table shows one person has been sent 9 emails. They have been active within two of the emails (3 & 5). So their inactive count would be 4 as we are counting from email number 6 onwards.   I'm using symfony 2.1.2 with FOSUserBundle. I extend the User from FOS and define a many-to-one (bidirectional) association to a Customer entity. I don't want to use primary key for the association (referencedColumnName).   Dear All, I have the following problem. I have a table in a db, with many columns. I can do different kind of select queries, to show, for example, for each record that satisfies a condition: all cells from columns with names ending in _t0 all cells from columns with names ending in _t1 ... To get the column lists to form the queries I use the information schema. Now, the problem: each query returns a record with a subset of the columns of the big table. This means that I can get a row of (all!) NULLs. How can I ask my query to reject such rows without having to type in explicitely the column names (i.e. by saying where col_1 is not null, col_2 is not null...)? Is it possible? Thanks in advance!!!   Hi, the players: 64bit linux with php 5 (ZendFramework 1.10.2) PostgreSQL 7.3 Doctrine 1.2 Via a Flash/Flex client i get an 8byte integer value. the field in the database is an BIGINT (8 byte) PHP_INT_SIZE show that system supports 8byte integer. printing out the value in the code as it is and as intval() leads to this: Plain: 1269452776100 intval: 1269452776099 float rounding failure ? but what really driving me nuts is ERROR: invalid input syntax for integer: "1269452776099.000000"' when i try to use it in a query. like: Doctrine_Core::getTable('table')->findBy('external_id',$external_id); or Doctrine_Core::getTable('table')->findBy('external_id',intval($external_id)); How i am supposed to handle this ? or how can i give doctrine a floating point number which it should use on a bigint field ? Any help is much appreciated! TIA

  Hi guys, I'm using AdventureWorks 2008 R2 database and added the BusinessEntity and Person tables to my EDMX. Then I changed the model in which the Person table inherits from the BusinessEntity table. As you may know these two tables have ModifiedDate and rowguid columns so the Person class should not have these properties because it inherits them from the BusinessEntity class. My question is, how can I modify the model to support inheritance and optimistic concurrency on both Person and BusinessEntity classes/tables on ModifiedDate property/column. PS. It also get me an error message that I have asked here. Thanks

• Restoring multiple database backups in a transaction

  I wrote a stored procedure that restores as set of the database backups. It takes two parameters - a source directory and a restore directory. The procedure looks for all .bak files in the source directory (recursively) and restores all the databases. The stored procedure works as expected, but it has one issue - if I uncomment the try-catch statements, the procedure terminates with the following error: error_number = 3013 error_severity = 16 error_state = 1 error_message = DATABASE is terminating abnormally. The weird part is sometimes (it is not consistent) the restore is done even if the error occurs. Another question: is the transaction code useful ? i.e., if there are 2 databases to be restored, will SQL Server undo the restore of one database if the second restore fails?
