• Where does the information shown by OS X Terminal 'Display all commands' feature come from?

  I just learned that if you hit and hold ESC while on the Mac Terminal, a prompt appears after a few seconds offering to show every command available on your system, including aliases, built-ins, and executables on your PATH. Soruce: http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2008/05/list-all-possible-terminal-commands.html However, the output is show through a more filter, and I cannot grep it or pipe it to another command. Does anyone know how this magic output is generated? Is it just generated on the fly by Terminal? Is there a bash command that can be called explicitly on the command line and get the same result? It is mostly curiosity, but I would love to be able to get the results as text I can post-process and not just browse on screen.

  I am going to host a few small sites on VPS, and each of them are going to run my own custom PHP scripts. I am fairly certain that they are secure (did everything in the book, plus some of which is not in the book) to make sure they can't be exploited. But just to be safe I want to know how I could secure each of the virtual hosts so that they can't escape from there virtual host (if a hacker uploaded a shell they could not go above the www folder a legitimate user can't do in ftp no matter how many times they click ..) folder on Debian and Apache.

  Apparently it's a URL shortener. It resolves just fine in Chrome and Firefox. How is this a valid top-level domain? Update: for the people saying it's browser shenanigans, why is it that: http://com./ does not take me to: http://www.com/? And, do browsers ever send you a response from some place other than what's actually up in the address bar? Aside from framesets and things like that, I thought browsers tried really hard to send you content only from the site in the address bar, to help guard against phishing.

  I tried to put everything in the title : I'm looking for a software that is able : to work with image (raw file), partition & whole disk, without distinction to copy whole image or only selected part (let's say .. from 0 to end of last partition, excluding free space for example ; or with start + offset/end system) to handle compression (at least gzip) You recognized, I'm looking for a "dd | gzip" utility with GUI on Windows. The closest tool I found so far is http://www.dubaron.com/diskimage/ but it's a bit old and don't have compression support. Any idea ?

• dig and dig -x are answering different

  I don't want the name provider to manage my records. I want to handle it myself. So I installed bind9 and made some configurations reading some articles and following some examples. bind didn't show any error after I created/edited the required files but; When I write `dig www.foo.com, I see the IP of the advertisement page of my name provider. But when I write dig -x server_ip_address; I see the name I purchased. What am I doing wrong? Can't a server be the nameserver of it's own? Is it a must to configure the records from the company I bought the name from? By the way, I realised that, my previous question was not clear, I deleted it, and asking the same question in a different way.

• Source of Unexplained Requests in Server Logs

  Hi, I am baffled by some entries in my server logs, specifically the web-server logs. Other than normal, expected traffic, I have noticed three types of request errors (eg 404, etc.): Broken links, ie links from old, external pages that point to pages that are no longer here Sequences of probes, ie some jerk trying to hack in by scanning my server for a series of exploitable admin type pages and such What appear to be completely random requests for things that have never existed on the server or even have anything to do with the server, and appear by themselves (ie not a series of requests like the probes) Could it somehow be a mistyped URL or IP? That’s about the only thing that I can think of, but still, how could I get a request on say, foobar.dyndns.org (12.34.56.78) for something like www.wantsfly.com/prx2.php or /MNG/LIVE or http://ant.dsabuse.com/abc.php?auth=45V456b09m&strPassword=X%5BMTR__CBZ%40VA&nLoginId=43. (Those are a few actual requests from my logs.) Can someone please explain scenario three to me? Thanks.

  This post is about a Catalyst 4948E switch. I was looking on the download page and realized that there are no "GD" versions available. Are the "ED" versions stable?   I am new to JME3 game engine but I know Android XML GUI layouts pretty good. I have a simple layout here and I cant figure out what is wrong. The Last digit is obviously 5, the other 2 (or 3 for a centenarian) and this number is the age + 3. • Detect an IP address of a Wireless Access Point device

  I have a Wireless Access Point device (http://www.szedup.com/show.aspx?id=1706), which I am planning to put into BeagleBoard-xM, in order to achieve wireless communication (LAN). However, I can't find it's IP address. I mean, I have to know it's IP address in order to connect with BeagleBoard-xM via a terminal emulator. For the moment, I have this device connected via Ethernet on my router. My router's setting page shows I have this device connected, but no further information. Is there any way to find the IP address of the Wireless Access Point? I hope of being understood. Any help would be really appreciated.

• Windows Phone 7 event

  This might not be of interest to anyone living outside of the Netherlands, but I still wanted to share this. On march 10th the dutch .net usergroup dotNed (of which I am chairman) organizes a LAN party together with the company Sevensteps. Sevensteps is a big player in the Surface area: they are one of the few companies whose applications are part of the standard tools you get when you buy a Surface unit. They were also present at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this year to introduce the SUR40, as mentioned in my previous post. But they do not only develop software for the Surface, they also do a lot of interesting things on other platforms. One of these is Windows Phone 7, or WP7 in short. Sevensteps and dotNed have joined forces to organize a free full day event where we will develop a WP7 application. The people attending will be developers (experienced and not so experienced on WP7), designers and all other sorts of people you’d expect in a project team. The day will start around 9.00 am and will end when the app is finished. We will form teams of both experienced and not experienced developers so that we can learn from each other. Each team will have their own task to perform, and in the end all parts will be assembled to form a killer WP7 app. As with everything that dotNed does this event is free for everyone. Microsoft will pay for dinner, Sevensteps will provide the room, lunch and ideas (and their expertise of course) and the rest is up to us! One announcement during the presentation was the plan to move m2e-wtp plugin into the m2e project at Eclipse. Jason said that m2e-wtp will not make it into the m2e Juno release but they expect the code to be transitioned over to Eclipse over the next six months. Getting the maven and wtp project models to play nicely together has been an issue for quite some time for our users. Hopefully this is a good step toward resolving those issues.

• Windows FTP client to mirror ftp sites?

  I need a Windows application that works like *nix's lftp. The Windows host will download the latest changes made to FTP Server #1, and upload those changes to FTP Server #2. Server #2 can't pull files directly from Server #1 because it's a www shared host with no shell account. The requirements are: 1. Windows app available for XP/Vista/W7 2. Must run either as icon or service. I don't want to have an extra icon open in the task bar 3. Reliable, so I don't have to worry about it. Is there an application you would recommend? Thank you.

• Problem whit usb wireless mouse

  Recently i have thi problem whit my wireless mouse (Trust model on: www.trust.com/15313). Sometimes when i start the Pc or during a game the pointer/arrow stop to move it. In the Pc start the pointer is blocked on the center of the screen. If I'm lucky i have to chance the USB wirless adapter from port 1 to port 2 but sometimes this trick doesn't work i to use the mouse i have to restart. Like you can see in the productor webpage this mouse don't have the direver but only a tool to solve some problem.   I have a web server that we use, apache, centos5, php I have a file called 'include.php' that I need to include in multiple sites. Eg. I have a site called testsite.co.za, now in the index.php i want to include the include.php file, the include.php is not in the root of testsite.co.za, Now i created another folder includes in the web root directory which contains include.php my code looks as follows in testsite.co.za/index.php require_once '../includes/include.php'; if i run testsite.co.za it can't detect include.php. Is there a certain server setting I need to change in order to include this file? My directory structureof -/var/www/html   -testsite.co.za       -index.php     -includes       -include.php Hope this makes sence

  I would like to set all virtualhosts on my server down for maintenance for some time. The temporary page should contain something like sorry, the page www.xxx.com is down for maintenance. you can see the cached version here: Then the trick: the user should then see the cached page from a cache like googlecache or similar for the requested page as long as the server is down. This would show the correct content on pages, that are static anyway and give the visitor the needed content in many cases, while I can shut down mysql and other services that would usually be needed to show that pages. How can I set a global page on all virtualhosts, that parses the original requested URL through PHP?

• What kind of language will replace C++ as C++ replaced C ? [closed]

  I think I'm not totally wrong when thinking that C++0x (or C++1x) is still C++, just better, with functionnalities coming from boost. I can't stop thinking that computer sciences, even with all that has been made so far, have to evolve again. I don't really like D since it just try to be some sort of "what C++ should have been", and Go seems to be too sophisticated when I dig a little into it, especially after watching some presentation video like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKnDgT73v8s The first thing that come into my mind is a new kind of syntax to directly handle specific datatypes and containers such as map, vectors, queues... What kind of things are researchers thinking about ? What are the real features that could make C++ better or a new C-like language could invent ? Does Go features such things ? Would there be a new kind of syntax that would "unbloat" C++ while keeping its advantages ? Could C++ have some of the interesting stuff of languages such as C# and ObjC ? EDIT: Please consider that I'm talking about a system language, not a VM/CLI/bytecode thing.

• Wordpress blog penalized by Google search - what's wrong?

  I have a blog (http://blog.brodzinski.com), which is wordpress.org blog with pretty popular Thesis theme with almost no other customizations. Some time ago it was penalized by Google search - it simply stopped appearing in search results even for search terms it used to be top result, like my name - Pawel Brodzinski - which isn't anything close to popular search term. To be exact the site has been penalized on Nov 18. It started popping up in search result on Dec 23 but only for a few days. Since Dec 27 it is out again. I know Google guidelines and I'm not aware to break any of them. I submitted reconsideration request after I noticed penalty. It was proceeded and there was no change whatsoever (no surprise as it seems the site was penalized again). I checked diagnostics in webmaster tools and neither any malware was detected nor any strange search terms popped up. I read related threads on Google webmasters forum but found none of solutions working for me. I posted a thread on Google webmasters forum (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=546339f49d4a03bc&hl=en) and the only answer I got was to check for duplicate content. Well, there is some duplicate content published on the web but it is true for vast majority of blogs and it doesn't seem to be a reason for a penalty. Also before Dec 27 I was able to remove duplicate content from a couple of sites which were republishing my feed but this doesn't change the situation - the site was penalized again. The problem is I have no idea what can be wrong with the website or how to find it out. To make the problem worse I'm no webmaster, I just run a wordpress blog, which supposed to be easy.
