  In other words, how to use T4 templates without ANY runtime dependencies? Yes, it is possible, and quite simple and elegant actually. In a desktop project, just open the Add New Item dialog, and search for "text template": From the two available templates, the one that gives you a zero-dependency runtime-usable template is the first one: Preprocessed Text Template. Once unfolded, you get the .tt file, but also a dependent .cs file automatically generated. Note the Custom Tool associated with the file: If you open up the .cs file, you will see that it doesn't contain the rendered "Hello World!!!" • Couple folders went 'access denied' in Windows. Why and how to fix?

  So, after a failed Windows 7 install, I put XP back on, and had a adrenaline shot when I got an access denied on a couple of my backed up folders. I already tried the instructions here at Microsoft KB, but it didn't fix it. I did add myself with full permissions on the main section of the Security tab, though, and that gave me access into the folder (I could do it in XP Home because of the Windows NT SP4 Security Configuration Manager). However, it appears some subfolders are still inaccessible. Two questions, then. Why exactly did this happen and how do I fix it?

• IIS FTP service - download timeouts and restarts getting the data twice

  We have an IIS FTP site on a Windows Server 2003 x64 machine. Application Layer Gateway service is disabled (so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931130 does not apply). Windows Firewall service is disabled as well. Connection timeout for the FTP site (there is only one) is set to 1,200 seconds = 20 minutes. An external client can connect to the site, list directory contents and download small files. When a client attempts to download a large file (eg, if the download continues for 3 minutes, which is still under 20 minutes, but relatively long), the server sends all data, then the connection times out, the client issues REST / RETR commands attempting to restart the download since after the last byte (which I believe should succeed and receive exactly 0 bytes), and the server behaves as if the client tried to restart after byte 0, that is, it sends the entire file all over. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Server Core remote management from Windows 7 machine

  I've installed Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 because I would like to administer my Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core machine. The problem that I'm getting when I try to run Server Manager is: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. This is what I've done so far: I'm running WinRM service on both machines (Server and Window 7) I've added my server to trusted hosts on my Windows 7 machine: winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="WINSRV2"} I've added registry entry on Windows 7 machine: reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f I've enabled Remote Management inbound rule on server firewall using CoreConfigurator 2.0 both machines are in the same subnet and when I search for network machines on Windows 7 I see my server. Question What else should I do to make it work? I would like to run several different remote management tools against my server machine.

• Why can't I install apps on Windows 8 using specific dial-up modem connections?

  This problem has persisted since I first tried out Windows 8 Consumer Preview, and also affects Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Preview, and Windows 8.1. Specifically, the problem occurs when I try to install apps from the Windows Store on a Globe Tattoo Broadband or Smart Bro dial-up connection (two common ways of connecting to the internet in the Philippines). I can confirm that this isn't a problem with my copy of Windows or my Microsoft account because I was able to install any app on other connections like public WiFi. This problem has persisted on three different dongles and two different computers. So why can't I install apps on those two specific types of connections?

• Google Chrome: "The application failed to initialize properly"

  Google Chrome stopped working for me today. When I launch Chrome, I see the following error: Windows - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application. It fails to load the New Tab Page. After a moment, I see the following error: Google Chrome The following page(s) have become unresponsive. You can wait for them to become responsive or kill them. My operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista. I've tried: uninstalled Chrome rebooted reinstalled Chrome rebooted That didn't fix it. What now? Any ideas?

• Change Language in Windows 8.1

  I try to change the output language of windows 8.1 (not preview). I installed a German version of windows 8.1 and try to change language over the control panel as it is suggested by microsoft. But the change has no effect, and if i check the Language options it says "Es ist kein Sprachpaket verfügbar" (No language pack available). I cannot find a download for the en-GB language pack either, as MS suggests using the control panel to download the files. Has anybody experienced similar problems and found a solution?.

• Why did numbered list stop working after I hit Enter?

  I have a numbered list like: 1.0 Excel 2010 1.1 Introduction to Excel 2010 1.1.A. A general overview of Excel 2010, geared towards beginners 1.1.B. There are 3 videos in this series I put the cursor at the end of the last line on 1.1.B and hit Enter. The next line should begin with 1.1.C but nothing appears when the cursor returns to the next line. Another example, if I put the cursor at the end of 1.1.A and hit enter, I should get a new 1.1.B and the original 1.1.B should be renamed to 1.1.C. After hitting enter, a new 1.1.B doesn't appear and the previous 1.1.B drops all the way to the next page. So the next bullet number that should come up doesn't come up. I tried Microsoft Fix It to reset the Registry and that didn't work either. This is very frustrating. Does anybody know how to fix this?

• Windows 7 made 2 hour shift for Daylight Savings Time

  My win7-64 ultimate has set the clock ahead 2 hours. It appears to have done it in increments of 1 hour, with the second 1 hour shift made sometime today. The first, correct, shift for Daylight Savings was sunday morning. In the clock settings it says Mountain Time UTC-7, but the official time should be Mountain Time UTC-6. Update for Windows 7 (KB979306) IS installed. Microsoft appears to be able to turn even setting the clock into a hairball. I need the clock rock solid since I use the computer to record TV programs.

• Why does my audio keep reverting to stereo?

  I have an ASUS P7P55D LE motherboard with onboard sound and I am running Windows 7 64-bit, and I am using the SPDIF output from my motherboard to my receiver. On my receiver I can see which audio channels are in use (i.e. stereo or 5.1) In the audio interface properties I can test DTS Audio and Dolby Digital outputs and both work fine, but when I try to play a game with 5.1 sound (I've tried Left 4 Dead and Dragon Age Origins) it reverts to stereo. I was getting this behaviour with the default Microsoft drivers so I installed the latest from the ASUS website but there is no difference. I notice that in the Advanced tab the Default Format only allows me to choose from various 2 channel formats so maybe that is something to do with it? How can I get 5.1 output all of the time?

• Disable the Old Adobe Flash Plugin in Google Chrome

  If you’ve just updated to the Dev or Beta release of Google Chrome, you might have noticed that a special version of Adobe Flash is now integrated into the default distribution of Chrome. But what about your old plug-in? As it turns out, the old plug-in is generally still installed… but you can easily disable Chrome plug-ins in the latest version, so let’s get to work. Disable the Extra Flash Plug-in Head over to about:plugins and look through the list—you should notice two Shockwave Flash plugins. The first one should be in your Google Chrome installation folder, and has the filename gcswf32.dll. This is the NEW one, so don’t disable it! If you keep scrollling down, you’ll see the old one, with the file name NPSWF32.dll. This is the OLD plugin, and you can safely disable it. Of course, if you only use Chrome you could just completely uninstall Adobe Flash from your system by heading into Control Panel’s Uninstall Programs screen, and then finding and uninstalling Adobe Flash Player Plugin. The ActiveX version is for Internet Explorer. We’ve not done any testing to see if the old Flash plugin is even still active or not, but may as well disable it just to be sure, right? • Does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? [closed]

  I've read multiple news articles that claim Hotmail offers two-factor authentication. One of the articles describes Hotmail's system, saying ...whenever you go to Hotmail...you can choose to get a single-use code–a string of numbers that will be sent via text message to your phone–to use instead of your password. Is this an accurate description of Hotmail's system? If so, does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? If you can use either your password or a single-use code, it seems to me that it does not. Is this system really more secure than just having a password? Doesn't this just make an additional "key" available to a hacker? (I must be wrong here, I know the folks at Microsoft are much smarter than I am).

  A couple of months back I wrote a blog post entitled Microsoft, OData and RDF where I gave a high level view of the OData protocol and how it compares to RDF. I talked about linked data, triples and such like which may have been somewhat useful however jargon-heavy. Earlier today Dr Michael Hausenblas (blog | twitter) offered an analogy which I think is probably more useful and with Michael's permission I'm re-posting it here:Imagine a Web (a Web of Documents, if you wish), which is not based on HTML and hyperlinks, but on MS Word documents. The documents are all available on the Internet, so you can download them and consume the content. But after you’re done with a certain document that talks about a book, how do you learn more about it? For example, reviews about the book or where you can purchase it? Maybe the original document mentions that there is some more related information on another server. So you’d need to go there and look for the related bit of information yourself. You see? That’s what the Web is great at – you just click on a hyperlink and it takes you to the document (or section) you’re interested in. All the legwork is taken care of for you through HTML, URIs and HTTP.Hm, right, but how is this related to OData? Well, OData feels a bit like the above mentioned scenario, just concerning data.   The sys.dm_db_stats_properties Dynamic Management Function returns information about the statistics that are currently on your database objects. This function takes two parameters, an object_id and a stats_id. Let’s have a look at the result set from this function against the AdventureWorks2012.Sales.SalesOrderHeader table. To obtain the object_id and stats_id I will use a CROSS APPLY with the sys.stats system table. SELECT sp.* FROM sys.stats s CROSS APPLY sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id, s.Stats_id) sp WHERE sp.object_id = object_id('Sales.SalesOrderHeader') The first two columns returned by this function are the object_id and the stats_id columns. The next column, ‘last_updated’, gives you the date and the time that a particular statistic was last updated. The next column, ‘rows’, gives you the total number of rows in the table as of the last statistic update date. The ‘rows_sampled’ column gives you the number of rows that were sampled to create the statistic. The ‘steps’ column represents the number of specific value ranges from the statistic histogram. The ‘unfiltered_rows’ column represents the number of rows before any filters are applied. If a particular statistic is not filtered, the ‘unfiltered_rows’ column will always equal the ‘rows’ column. Lastly we have the ‘modification_counter’ column which represents the number of modification to the leading column in a given statistic since the last time the statistic was updated. Probably the most important column from this Dynamic Management Function is the ‘last_updated’ column. You want to always ensure that you have accurate and updated statistics on your database objects. Accurate statistics are vital for the query optimizer to generate efficient and reliable query execution plans. Without accurate and updated statistics, the performance of your SQL Server would likely suffer. • Learning Objective-C for iPad/iPhone/iPod Development

  I am learning how to write apps for the iPad/iPhone/iPod!  Why, well several reasons.  One reason, I have 5 devices in my house on the platform.  I had an iPad and iPhone, Michelle has an iPhone, and each of the kids have iPod Touches.  They are excellent devices for life management, entertainment, and learning.  I am amazed at how well the kids pick up on it and how much it effects the way they learn.  My two year old knows how to use it better than any other device we own and she is learning new words and letters so quickly. Because of this saturation at home, it would be fun to write some apps my family could use.  Some games to bring the hobby of development back into my life.  Second reason is we want to have a Geekswithblogs app for the iPhone and iPad.  We are not sure if it is purely informational (blog posts and tweets) or if members want to be able to publish from the app.  Creating a blog editor would be tough stuff, but could be just the right challenge. There are so many more reasons, but the last one that really makes me excited is that it is a new domain of development where I get excited when I think about writing apps.  That excitement level where I want to see if there are User Groups and if we are just watching TV, to break out the MBP and start working on it.  That excitement level where I could really read a development book cover to cover and not just use as a reference.  I really do like this feeling. • IIS reveals internal IP address in content-location field - fix

  Referring: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q218180/, there is a known issue in IIS4/5/6 whereby it will reveal the internal IP of a web server in the content-location field of the HTTP header. We have IIS 6. I have tried the fix suggested, but it has not worked. The website is configured to send all requests to ASP.NET, and I am wondering if this is why the fix, which addresses IIS configuration, has not worked for us. If this is the case, how would we fix this in ASP.NET? We need to fix this issue in order to pass a security audit.

• File History - Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration

  When trying to run the File History tool in Windows 8 it runs for about 2 seconds then stops. No files are backed up to the selected drive. In the event viewer the only error that appears is: Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration C:\Users\win8User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config I've tried deleting both the configuration files and the FileHistory directory on the target drive. Setting up File History again results in the same error. Is there a better way to track down what is causing the failure? Or somehow get the File History tool to create a more verbose log file that shows what is causing the problem?

• Search Work Items for TFS 2010 - New Extension

  A few months ago I was constantly using Visual Studio 2008 with Team Foundation Server 2008. Searching for work items with queries inside Visual Studio became a pain until I found an add in that simplifed it into one little search box in the IDE.  It allowed me to enter some text in, hit the enter key, and it would bring back a list (aka open a .wiq file) of work items that matched the text entered. I became a huge fan of Noah Coad's Search Work Item Add In. He wrote a pretty good blog on how to use it as well. Of course when we upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010, the 2008 add in no longer worked. I didn't see any updates for it on codeplex to be 2010 compatible. Cory Cissell and I have published a few Visual Studio Extensions already so I figured I'd take a shot at making this tool 2010 compatible by turning it into an extension. Sure enough, it worked. We used it locally for a while and recently decided to publish it to the Visual Studio Gallery. If you are currently looking for an easy way to search work items in Visual Studio 2010, this is worth checking out. Big thanks goes out to Noah for originally creating this on codeplex. If you want to modify which work item fields are searchable, type in "--template" (no quotes) into the search box and hit enter. This will open the search template. Just add another "Or" statement, pick the field name, select an operator, type "[search]" (no quotes) in the value field, and hit ctrl + s to save.
