• when to set up a mail server?

  i've got a web service up and running with apache on ubuntu server in a vps from a hosting company (long sentence:)). i wonder when someone would like to set up a own mail server (postfix + dovecot)? cause i just want to be able to: send emails (account activation etc) to my users with php - the emails have to appear to come from the website's domain receive emails from my users (customer support etc) using Apple Mail/Microsoft Outlook. could this be accomplished with an email hosting company? are there situations i would benefit from setting up an own mail server on ubuntu?

• What is the Everyone built-in windows security group called in Portuguese?

  I'm attempting to setup share permissions on a Brazilian server and wish to give Everyone read only access. However, the server's language is Brazilian (Portuguese), and it looks like the security groups' names have been translated. Does anyone know what this group is called in Portuguese? Is there an easy way to access this group which is not language sensitive (e.g. some constant value, such as the SID (S-1-1-0) which can always be used, regardless of locale settings)? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330. NB: I tried using this SID, but on its own it did not work - though perhaps I need to format it in some way?

• Windows 2008 R2 DS in 2003 domain?

  Hi, Having a master domain controller running Windows 2003, and now I'd like to set up a new domain controller on a branch office. I really only have access to licenses for Windows 2008 R2 (through licensing.microsoft.com), so question is if a newly installed Windows 2008 Standard R2 can become a domain controller in the existing (2003) domain? First I tried adprep /forestprep on the newly installed 2008, but it complained about not being a domain controller. I then tried dcpromo, but it too complained about it. According to MS documentation, it seems I have to run 'adprep /forestprep' on the master domain controller, and adprep is located in 2008 installation DVD. Am I on the right track? Is the correct way to mount the 2008 installation dvd into the existing 2003 master controller, and run 'adprep /forestprep' on it there? Will I be able to run dcpromo on the 2008 once that has been completed? Thanks,

  Already 10 days has passed since SQL Bits X in London. I really enjoyed it! Those kind of events are great not only for the content but also to meet friends that – due to distance – is not possible to meet every day. Friends from PASS, SQL CAT, Microsoft, MVP and so on all in one place, drinking beers, whisky and having fun. A perfect mixture for a great learning and sharing experience! I’ve also enjoyed a lot delivering my session on Temporal Snapshot Fact Tables. Given that the subject is very specific I was not expecting a lot of attendees….but I was totally wrong! It seems that the problem of handling daily snapshot of data is more common than what I expected. I’ve also already had feedback from several attendees that applied the explained technique to their existing solution with success. • Create MAPI profile for exchange 2007 without Outlook

  Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. So I want the mail icon to appear in the control panel to configure e-mail accounts. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with an utility called newprof.exe but it is no longer available: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962 I don't have an outlook license so I need a free way to create MAPI profiles in this server, either installing a free client or some ms tool. I've just installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 Build 2276000, after that Win 7 stuck on welcome screen and I have to click on the user image to continue. Before that because I have just one account Win7 just showed welcome screen for a minute and then it went to Win7 desktop automatically, but now I have to click on my account image to continue. Something that I've done : Start Run Msconfig Services Tab Checked Hide all Microsoft Services Disabled all services except Eset Services (Anti Virus) Unfortunately the problem haven't solved yet :( How should I fix it?

• Windows 8 - IE 10 Metro - How to print or save a webpage

  I'm running Windows 8 Pro. My default browser is Internet Explorer 10 (and hence opens as a Modern Windows 8 app). I want to know how to print or save a webpage. There are no related settings available in the browser. The only option is to select "View on Desktop" and the browser interface familiar to IE 9 opens up on the desktop, through which I could access the above said options and additional settings. I know the Desktop is not going away anytime soon and that its still an important part of Windows. But if Microsoft is pitching for the Modern Windows UI, why would they leave out important options such as print & save from it and force a user to access the "old" Desktop mode for the same? Even Windows 8 RT supports plug-and-play access to Printers & Peripherals. So not being able to Print from a tablet or access the File System is definitely not an answer.

• Back up a single table in SQL Server

  SQL Server doesn’t have an easy way to take a table backup, so I often use the bcp (Bulk Copy Program) to accomplish the same goal. I’ve mentioned this before, and someone told me when they tried it they couldn’t restore the table – ah the dangers of telling people half the information! I should have mentioned that you need to have a “format file” ready if the table does not exist at the destination. In my case I already had the table, in this person’s case they did not. The format file can be used to rebuild that table structure before the data is bcp’d in, and you can read more about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191516.aspx There’s another way to back up a table, and that’s to create a Filegroup and place the table there. Then you can take a Filegroup backup to back up a single table. Of course, there are other methods of moving a single table’s data in an out, including SQL Server Integration Services and even the older Data Transformation Services, or simply by using hte SQLCMD or PowerShell utilities to run a query and just save the output to a file. In fact, these days I’m using a PowerShell script to build INSERT statements from that query. That could also easily be modified to create the table structure (or modify one if needed) quite easily. • MVC 4 and the App_Start folder

  I've been delving into ASP.NET MVC 4 a little since its release last month. One thing I was chomping at the bit to explore was its bundling and minification functionality, for which I'd previously used Cassette, and been fairly happy with it. MVC 4's functionality seems very similar to Cassette's; the latter's CassetteConfiguration class matches the former's BundleConfig class, specified in a new directory called App_Start.At first glance, this seems like another special ASP.NET folder, like App_Data, App_GlobalResources, App_LocalResources, and App_Browsers. But Visual Studio 2010's lack of knowledge about it (no Solution Explorer option to add the folder, nor a fancy icon for it) made me suspicious. I found the MVC 4 project template has five classes there--AuthConfig, BundleConfig, FilterConfig, RouteConfig, and WebApiConfig. Each of these is called explicitly in Global.asax's Application_Start method. Why create separate classes, each with a single static method? Maybe they anticipate a lot more code being added there for large applications, but for small ones, it seems like overkill. (And they seem hastily implemented--some declared as static and some not, in the base namespace instead of an App_Start/AppStart one.) Even for a large application I work on with a substantial amount of code in Global.asax.cs, a RouteConfig might be warranted, but the other classes would remain tiny.More importantly, it appears App_Start has no special magic like the other folders--it's just convention. I found it first described in the MVC 3 timeframe by Microsoft architect David Ebbo, for the benefit of NuGet and WebActivator; apparently some packages will add their own classes to that directory as well. One of the first appears to be Ninject, as most mentions of that folder mention it, and there's not much information elsewhere about this new folder.

• Backing up Hyper-V VMs using "wbadmin" failing on Windows Server 2012

  I'm trying to backup a single VM using "wbdamin". I'm using this command-line: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:d: -hyperv:VM_Machine_Name -quiet But the backup have no success. Looking at my Events, I get the following information: Source: SSP Event ID: 16387 Level: Error "Writer Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer experienced some error during snapshot creation. More info: ." ============================= Source: Backup Event ID: 521 Level: Error "The backup operation that started at '?2014?-?06?-?11T15:38:44.459000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x8100010C'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved." ============================= Source: VSS No Event Errors. I didn't find any info about "0x8100010C" error code through the web and I'm stuck. Anyone know how to fix this?

  When a Southern “boy” like me sees somebody that used to be, or should be, a close friend or relative that they haven’t seen in a long time, that’s a typical greeting.  Come to think of it, we were often related to close friends. So “back in the day”, we not only knew people but everybody close to them.  When I started driving, my Dad told me to always drive carefully in Polk county.  He said if I ran into anybody there, it was likely they would be related or close family friends. Not so much any more… the cities have gotten bigger and more people come south and stay.  One of the curses of air conditioning I guess. Anyway, it’s been a while.  So “How’s your Momma and them”?  Have you been waiting for me to blog again?  Too bad, I’m back anyway <smile>. Here in Charlotte we just had another great code camp.  The Enterprise Developers Guild is going strong, thanks to the help of a lot of dedicated people.  Mark Wilson, Brian Gough, Syl Walker, Ghayth Hilal, Alberto Botero, Dan Thyer, Jean Doiron, Matt Duffield all come to mind.  Plus all the regulars who volunteer for every special event we have. Brian Gough put on a successful SharePoint Saturday.  Rafael Salas and our friends at the local Pass SQL group had a great SQL Saturday.  Brian Hitney and Glen Gordon keep on doing their usual great job for developers in the southeast as our local Microsoft reps. Since my last post, I have the honor of being designated the INetA Membership Mentor for Georgia in addition to mentoring the groups in the Carolinas for the past several years.  Georgia could be a really good thing since my wife likes shopping in Atlanta, not to mention how much we both like Georgia in general.  As I recall, my Momma had people in Georgia.  Wonder how their “Mommas an’ them” are doing?   Bill J

• Is there a HP DeskJet 5940 maintenance tool for Windows 7 x64?

  According to HP, the printer is not yet supported on Windows 7, so this could well be the answer. The printer is supported by Microsoft's drivers, but as far as I can tell, this is just a basic driver with no frills. I need to clean and align my ink cartridges because the quality right now is terrible. I've tried installing the Vista x64 drivers, but the setup detects that I'm not running Vista and does not allow me to continue. I was hoping there is a hack for this, or something similar. If not, I'll just plug it into my Vista laptop.

  I hate the new windows 8.1 search. I mean a truly loathe it. It's easily the absolute worst thing Microsoft has ever made (including bing and IE). I asked how to get the old search back and the answer was that you can't. Honestly, I haven't noticed any changes from 8 - 8.1 besides a single tile has changed color (dunno why, the color doesn't even match the icon), and I really hate this new search thing. So how do I get 8 back?

• How to get tilemap transparency color working with TiledLib's Demo implementation?

  So the problem I'm having is that when using Nick Gravelyn's tiledlib pipeline for reading and drawing tmx maps in XNA, the transparency color I set in Tiled's editor will work in the editor, but when I draw it the color that's supposed to become transparent still draws. The closest things to a solution that I've found are - 1) Change my sprite batch's BlendState to NonPremultiplied (found this in a buried Tweet). 2) Get the pixels that are supposed to be transparent at some point then Set them all to transparent. Solution 1 didn't work for me, and solution 2 seems hacky and not a very good way to approach this particular problem, especially since it looks like the custom pipeline processor reads in the transparent color and sets it to the color key for transparency according to the code, just something is going wrong somewhere. At least that's what it looks like the code is doing. • How to work around a possible XNA Game Studio or Windows Phone SDK install failure on Windows 8

  I am not sure if you guys know Aaron Stebner. Aaron works at Microsoft, and has pulled thorns from my side many many times already. His blog is at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner and it is a gold mine of tips and tricks to debug and solve many cryptic issues happening during installation and removal of programs. For example, Aaron taught me how to remove programs that do not appear in the Programs and Features list, amongst many other things. The last nugget I used from Aaron’s blog saved my butt just before a presentation where I had to run both Visual Studio 10 with the Windows Phone SDK, and Visual Studio 11 for WinRT development. Of course this had to be on Windows 8. Unfortunately when you install the Windows Phone SDK on Windows 8, you may (or may not, I saw both scenarios) encounter an issue with XNA, and the installation fails. Unfortunately, even if you don’t use XNA in your apps, this will prevent even normal Windows Phone app development. Fortunately, Aaron has a fix for that. • Facilitating XNA game deployments for non programmers

  I'm currently working on an RPG, using the RPG starter kit from XNA as a base. (http://xbox.create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/roleplaying_game) I'm working with a small team (two designers and one music/sound artist), but I'm the only programmer. Currently, we're working with the following (unsustainable) system: the team creates new pics/sounds to add to the game, or they modify existing sounds/pics, then they commit their work to a repository, where we keep a current build of everything. (Code, images, sound, etc.) Every day or so, I create a new installer, reflecting the new images, code changes, and sound, and everyone installs it. My issue is this: I want to create a system where the rest of the team can replace the combat sounds, for instance, and they can immediately see the changes, without having to wait for me to build. The way XNA's setup, if I publish, it encodes all of the image and sound files, so the team can't "hot swap." I can set up Microsoft VS on everyone's machine and show them how to quickly publish, but I wanted to know if there was a simpler way of doing this. Has anyone come up against this when working with teams using XNA?

• Granting rights to the sa account using osql

  I'm installing sql instances through script, and after creating a certain instance, I cannot get the sa account to be enabled through osql. What I've tried osql -S .\INSTANCENAME -E use master ALTER LOGIN sa ENABLE GO Using SSMS to enable the account (by logging in using Windows Auth., 'New query', and exactly the same query as in 1.) Suggestions in this issue No. 2. is actually working; and the account is enabled instantly. No 1 is not working, not even with the suggestions provided in 3., I have restarted the SQL services after executing the commands in osql. Additional info Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, No password policies apply to the account.

• Is it possible/How to boot an XP VHD in Windows 7

  In windows 7 it is pretty simple to boot directly to a VHD, given that it also contains (or you are going to install) Windows 7 (or Vista/Server 2008). This installation is made possible I believe by the fact that from Vista on, Microsoft is using WIM (Windows Imaging Format) for OS installation. Is there a way to install XP to a VHD on Windows 7? Or is there a way to create a WIM image of the XP installer? Some have claimed to be able to do it in different blog posts, but there are no explanations of how to achieve it.
