• Emulating a transaction-safe SEQUENCE in MySQL

  We're using MySQL with InnoDB storage engine and transactions a lot, and we've run into a problem: we need a nice way to emulate Oracle's SEQUENCEs in MySQL. The requirements are: - concurrency support - transaction safety - max performance (meaning minimizing locks and deadlocks) We don't care if some of the values won't be used, i.e. gaps in sequence are ok. There is an easy way to archieve that by creating a separate InnoDB table with a counter, however this means it will take part in transaction and will introduce locks and waiting. I am thinking to try a MyISAM table with manual locks, any other ideas or best practices?

  I have a table that holds nested categories. I want to avoid duplicate names on same-level items (i.e., categories with same parent).   We're implementing a blog for a site which supports six different languages and five of them have non-Latin characters in their alphabets. We are not sure whether we should have them encoded (that is what we're doing at the moment) Létání s potravinami: Co je dovoleno? becomes l%c3%a9t%c3%a1n%c3%ad-s-potravinami-co-je-dovoleno and the browser displays it as létání-s-potravinami-co-je-dovoleno. or if we should replace them with their Latin "counterparts" (similar looking letters) Létání s potravinami: Co je dovoleno? becomes letani-s-potravinami-co-je-dovoleno. I can't find a definitive answer as to what's better from SEO perspective? Search engine optimization is very important for us. Which approach would you suggest?

The extra field in the intent is being left behind. Is this a bug or an intended behavior?

• How do I ensure GUI responsiveness when using OpenCL on the display GPU?

  In my relatively short time learning OpenCL I frequently see my application cause the operating system UI to become significantly less responsive (several seconds for a window to respond to a drag for example). I have encountered this problem on Windows Vista and Mac OS X both with NVidia GPUs. What can I do when using OpenCL on the same GPU as the display to ensure that my application does not significantly degrade the UI responsiveness like this? Also, can this be done without taking needless performance losses within my application? (Ie, if the user is not doing some UI intensive task then I would not expect my application to run any slower than it does now.) I understand that any answers will be very platform specific (where platform includes OS/GPU/driver combo).

  Hi, I creating a program which send newsletter with a background image. It works fine on Office 2000-2003, thunderbird, but the background image does not show on Outlook 2007. I read that Microsoft changed the rendering engine and did not support the background css property (it is possible but only applied to the Body). • Specify artifact version outside of pom

  Is there a way to specify the artifact version outside of the POM file? I have 2 CI projects that build an artifact. One builds a "stable" development version from a 'develop' branch and the other builds an unstable version which is the result of merging all active feature branches into the develop branch. I want the stable version to build as xyz-1.0.jar and the integration build to go in as xyz-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar. Is there a way for the CI job to run a maven task or specify via the command line if a release or snapshot jar should be built without manually modifying the POM? Currently I have the version specified as 1.0 in the pom. I considered using the release plugin but I don't want the automatic version number increase and tagging that it does.

  Ho do I prevent a duplicate row from being created in a table with two columns, neither of which are unique? And can this be done using MySQL only, or does it require checks with my PHP script? • Using SSIS, how do you read a datetime field into a variable that is of Data Type string?

  This one has bugged me for the longest time and a great question to ask the Stackoverflow users I think. I have a rather large SSIS flow that uses a string variable to store the datetime. I would now like to dynamically read the datetime value from the database, but how would you construct the SSIS to do this? My first obvious thought would be to simply execute a SQL task to get the datetime and store it in the variable, but got the "differs from the current variable type" error. Is there a simple way to convert the database datetime into a String variable? Any help from the community would be appreciated,

  Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to? • Controlling a browser from Python

  I am looking for a way to control a browser from Python, i.e. fill out form fields and submit them, possibly call JS functions. I've looked around a bit, but as far as I could see PyWebKitGtk only lets you show the browser as a GUI element, not interface with it. Is there a way to do this easily? I wrote my program logic in Python, and I would hate to port it to JS. Besides that, even if I'd use pure JS "bookmarklets", those wouldn't be able to read/write to my local filesystem, would they? P.S. to quell your suspicions, I'm not trying to automatically fill out forum account creation forms or something similarly spammious, though the task is technically similar. I need to crawl/scrape sites for my research project.

• How to modify the Title Bar text for SQL Server Management Studio?

  Sometimes I keep multiple instances of SQL Server Management Studio 2005 open. I might have the dev database open in one, and the production database open in another. These appear in the Windows task bar with the text "Microsoft SQL Serve...", which means it's impossible to differentiate between them unless I open the window and scroll the Object Explorer up to see what server the window is actually connected to. Is ther any way that I can get the window to display the server name first, and then the name of the application? Like "Dev-DB.database_name - Microsoft SQL Serve..." or whatever?

  I've had to add features to an application that depends on a database from another application. I've been able to set up a connection to this external database and pull data from it. However, I'm not sure how to get my main application to create a test database for this external application. It would be awesome if there some way to pull in the schema for this database and create it in the same manner that 'rake db:test:prepare' does. Is there any configuration capabilities for RSpec to do this, or will I have to roll my own task?

• IDLE wont start Python 2.6.5

  I was using it as my primary text editor for quite sometime. However, one day it just stopped working. This had happened to me several times before, so I simply tried to end all procceses using windows task manager. However that didn't work. I've recently tried getting it to work again. Whenever I try to reopen it it informs me that it's subprocess couldn't connect. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, yet the problem persists. Anyone have any other solutions? To do this for now i use NHibernate ExportSchema bases on a NHibernate configuration generated with Fluent NHibernate this way (during my ISessionFactory creation method): FluentConfiguration configuration = Fluently.Configure(); ... Mapping conf ... configuration.Database(fluentDatabaseProvider); this.nhibernateConfiguration = configuration.BuildConfiguration(); returnSF = configuration.BuildSessionFactory(); ... Later new SchemaExport(this.nhibernateConfiguration) .SetOutputFile(filePath) .Execute(false, false, false); fluentDatabaseProvider is a FluentNHibernate IPersistenceConfigurer which is needed to get proper sql dialect for database creation. When factory is created with an existing database, everything works fine. But what i want to do is to create an NHibernate Configuration object on a selected database engine without a real database behind the scene... And i don't manage to do this. If anybody has some idea.

  Hello all, This is a question about generic c++ event driven applications design. Lets assume that we have two threads, a "Dispatcher" (or "Engine"...) and a "Listener" (or "Client"...). Let's assume that I write the Dispatcher code, and release it as a library. I also write the Listener interface, of course. When the Dispatcher executes (after Listener registration) listenerInstance.onSomeEvent(); the event handling code will actually be executed by the Dispatcher thread, so if the person that implements the Listener writes something like void Listener::onSomeEvent() { while(true) ; } The Dispatcher will stuck forever. Is there a "plain old c++" (I mean no boost or libsigc++) way to "decouple" the two classes, so I can be sure that my Dispatcher will work fine whatever the Listeners does in the callbacks? bye and thanks in advance, Andrea

• What is your prefered way to return XML from an ActionMethod in Asp.net MVC?

  I am displaying charts that load the data asynchronously because the searches are the work to fetch the data is quite heavy. The data has to be return as XML to make the chart library happy. My ActionMethods return a ContentResult with the type set as text/xml. I build my Xml using Linq to XML and call ToString. This works fine but it's not ideal to test. I have another idea to achieve this which would be to return a view that builds my XML using the XSLT View engine. I am curious and I always try to do the things "the right way". So how are you guys handling such scenarios? Do you implement a different ViewEngine (like xslt) to build your XML or do you Build your XML inside your controller (Or the service that serves your controller)?

  I am writing a virtual desktop application which utilises the DeferWindowPos API functions. The current method I am using is moving the windows off the screen if they're not on the current virtual desktop. However I know wish to also hide the windows that are off-screen so they do not appear on the task bar. I have attempted this by also passing SWP_SHOWWINDOW/SWP_HIDEWINDOW to the DeferWindowPos() calls. I have read a few sites regarding this and one of them suggested that if SWP_SHOWWINDOW/SWP_HIDEWINDOW are passed, then the window will only show or hide, and no reposition. Can anyone confirm this, or am I doing something wrong?
