• Web Folder size/quota reporting tool?

  I am currently using a Visual Basic script to determine how big the web folders are and what quota is decided for each folder. The quota is in no way a physical limit, just a value inserted by me to decide whether a user is using too much space or not. The script does the job quite neatly and sends an html file by mail on a regular basis. The problem is that it's such a hassle to insert new quotas since I have to fiddle around with the code. A central "control panel" with an overview and ability to insert new quotas would be more suitable. Is there any software that can do the following: Scan specified folder/subfolders Report the file size and present it in some sort of interface (could be a php/mysql solution) Ability to specify a quota and see the difference value ? It is really important that the quota handling is made simple so that some non-technician can handle this.

• How to solve this problem with a 'tuned' prompt in ZSH?

  I have an adjusted prompt in my ZSH-configuration. Main feature is, that this prompt is colored red, so that I can easily it distinguish from the outputs of programs. My prompt is defined as follows: PROMPT=$'\e[0;31m%n@%m:%~> \e[0m' This works mostly fine, but sometimes my cursor switches to another position on tab-completion and some characters are left behind on the screen and mangle up the commandline. That is a little annoyance, but if someone knows a solution for this, I would appreciate it.

• erratic audio levels on windows vista

  I'm somewhat hard of hearing. I've been listening to my windows Vista machine with a pair of headphones so I don't annoy the others. I have 2 issues: 1) the volume varies enormously depending on the source. Having a windows alert occur while I am listening to a DVD or Youtube is a painful experience. Is there a preferred way to set all the different audio controls so I have a more constant volume? I already have lowered the volumes of the windows alerts. 2)Is there a way to limit the volume of my headphones to protect what is left of my hearing? Is there a software solution or should I be going for a hardware limiter? thanks retired dude

  I administer a small network (10 users). I'm getting ready to deploy a internal webapp that will be hosted and accessed locally only. There are about 10 users on the network (192.168.111.0/24), a win2k3 server, apache (RHEL), and Mysql (RHEL), and various miscellaneous peripheries. I'd like to isolate the apache and sql boxes into a seperate area of the lan to keep things easier to maintain/grow. I've been reading about vlans, subnets, etc.. I'm not clear, however, which would be the best solution for our setup. Thanks for any tips and or advice.

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook &ndash; Book Review (sort of)

  I just received my copy of the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook, co-authored by fellow Microsoft Regional Director, Gill Cleeren, and at first glance I like what I see. I’ve always been a fan of the “cookbook” approach to technical books because they are problem/solution oriented. Often developers need solutions to solve specific questions like “how do I send email from within my .NET application” and so on, and yes, that was a blatant plug to my article explaining how to accomplish just that, but I digress. :-) I also enjoy the cookbook approach because you can just start flipping pages and randomly stop somewhere and see what nugget of information is staring up at you from the page. Anyway, what I like about this book is that it focuses on a specific area of Silverlight development, accessing data and services.  The book is broken down into the following chapters: Chapter 1: Learning the Nuts and Bolts of Silverlight 4 Chapter 2: An Introduction to Data Binding Chapter 3: Advanced Data Binding Chapter 4: The Data Grid Chapter 5: The DataForm Chapter 6: Talking to Services Chapter 7: Talking to WCF and ASMX Services Chapter 8: Talking to REST and WCF Data Services Chapter 9: Talking to WCF RIA Services Chapter 10: Converting Your Existing Applications to Use Silverlight As you can see this book is all about working with Silverlight 4 and data. • FoxPro 2.6 DOS on Windows 7 64-bit

  I support a company that has a very old, mission critical, FoxPro for DOS 2.6 (FPD) application. For variuos reasons the company didn't adapt/migrate their app, which, ironically, has been running even better under Windows XP (and 32-bit Win7) because the OS allowed new features like more reliable networking, distributed printing, email integration. Unfortunately for this company, most new machines now come with a 64-bit version of Windows 7, which is incompatible with their FPD app. I know this time the writing is on the wall: the only long-term solution is to migrate their app. But I wonder if anyone can suggest a temporary alternative path, which doesn't involve either: downgrade 64-bit Windows to 32-bit, or run the app on a virtualized 32-bit XP

• Linux servers vs Windows IIS sense of usage "free" solutions

  I wonder what is the sense of using "free" open source solutions for serious webstie applications? Crawled and read many testing of servers performance and there is one conclusion: IIS seems to be the best choice for high load applicatiom. I mean cost effective. Especially this concers to Nginx PLUS and LiteSpeed Users where subscriptions paid for e.g. LoadBalacer and extra support cost a lot in fact. I'm asking then where it's "free" then or "cheap" in this case? Assuming even little higher cost of dedicated servers with Windows still seems like Windows looks cheaper. At it's basic setup Windows 2012 with IIS offer much more than std LAMP, or other NGINX config.... Maybe am I missing sth ? I mean only general case for someone who did not already started his app. I know exactly that the cheapest solution is the one someone is skilled. Has anyone done already such real costs calculation for example scenarios?

• How can I split a stereo audio track of a movie into two separate audio tracks?

  I often record TV shows with a hard disk recorder/DVD writer, burn them as VRO file and convert to MP4 with Handbrake. The shows are bilingual broadcasts with two mono audio channels instead of a stereo one: dubbed voice on the left, original voice on the right. The TV set and VLC are both perfectly capable to play only the left or the right channel, but other video players may just offer to select between different stereo audio tracks (like they are present on many DVDs). I'd like to have an easy process to create MP4 or MKV files of these shows where the two audio channels are split into two separate audio tracks. The only way that I know of is to extract the audio track (e.g. using MPEG Streamclip), split it into two tracks using an audio tool like Audacity and then merge the audio tracks back (using a DVD authoring software, don't remember all details). Clearly not a thing to repeat regularly. Preferably a solution should run on Mac OS X, but Linux or Windows solutions are very welcome, too.

• how can i realize a video-wall on 3-9pc with vlc

  hello! i have to create a videowall, from 3 to 9 monitor. every monitor as a pc. actually, i stream from a server 9 movies with different istances of VLC, but i could also play on every machine the relative video with a single player. there's no problem. the real problem is that i really dont know how to sync the videos on a LAN...unfortunately there is a NETSYNC module inside VLC wich is NOT working. here are some info about my setup: videowall from 3 to 9 monitor || from 3 to 9 pc, all with the same configuration || a gigabit router+switch for the "dedicated" LAN im really stuck in this situation, if anyone has an idea or just a completely different solution, please, share it with me! thanks a lot in advance! :)

• once VPNed into pfSense, unable to hit the public URLs of my websites - they are routed to the pfSense box

  I have a pfSense box setup as the firewall/router/VPN appliance at my colo. Once I VPN into the colo (either pptp or openvpn, pptp preferred due to multiple clients and ease of configuration), I am able to hit all my servers by their private 10.10.10.x ip and am able to browse the public internet without issue. When I try and hit the URL of a domain hosted by one of my servers, I am prompted for credentials. If I login using the pfSense credentials, I'm connected to pfSense as if I'd used it's internal IP. If I hack my hosts file to point url - server private IP it works fine, but this is obviously not a good solution. To recap: not connected to VPN - www.myurl.com works connected to VPN - www.myurl.com never makes it to the correct server, but is sent only to the pfSense box I'm sure it's something small that I've missed in the pfSense config.

Hence, posting the question here as well: I have a lead to build an event manager solution in LAMP with following functionality: It should handle events by country, city, locality in city, type of event, venue type etc. following are a few user features: to see details of city, venue, event, performer etc. to purchase tickets and reserve tables. to search for events by city, venue, type, performer etc. to manage favorite venues and performers, save events etc. the venues should be able to add their events I plan to use a CMS (Joomla, Drupal etc.) with some ready made extension that provides most of the functionality or provide framework to build upon. Could you guys suggest me a CMS and an extension to build this. I know it is possible to do this in both Joomla or Drupal. What I am looking is the extension that is closest to my requirements whether it is done in Joomla or Drupal, or as a matter of fact any other CMS. Thanks in anticipation!

• TDD with SQL and data manipulation functions

  While I'm a professional programmer, I've never been formally trained in software engineering. As I'm frequently visiting here and SO, I've noticed a trend for writing unit tests whenever possible and, as my software gets more complex and sophisticated, I see automated testing as a good idea in aiding debugging. However, most of my work involves writing complex SQL and then processing the output in some way. How would you write a test to ensure your SQL was returning the correct data, for example? Then, say if the data wasn't under your control (e.g., that of a 3rd party system), how can you efficiently test your processing routines without having to hand write reams of dummy data? The best solution I can think of is making views of the data that, together, cover most cases. I can then join those views with my SQL to see if it's returning the correct records and manually process the views to see if my functions, etc. are doing what they're supposed to. Still, it seems excessive and flakey; particularly finding data to test against...

• impossible to connect.. days trying..

  I have a problem: I am on Debian. I configured my nic with a static ip (192.168.1.56). When I try to connect to a network, initially with ifconfig eth2 I get (correctly): eth2 inet addr:192.168.1.56 .... inet6 addr: fe80:221:ff:fe96:4598/64 but after a few seconds the 102.168.1.56 disappears and after some other seconds disappears the inet6 address too. When I press in the nm-applet it requires me the password but in the meantime it try to connect. At uni, the connection is a DHCP one. It works for the first few seconds but after it doesn't.   I demoed the Hebrew language version of Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 live in Israel recently. The crowd was yet again wowed by the simplified UI (SUI). I’ve now spent some time playing around with most of the 23 language versions, or the NLS (Natural Language Support) versions as we’d call them, available in Release 8. Hebrew Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 The simplified UI is built using 100% Oracle ADF. This framework is a great solution for developers to productively build tablet-first, mobility-driven apps for users who work and live using natural languages other than English. Oracle ADF’s internationalization (i18n) relies on built-in Java and Unicode,  packing in i18n goodness such as Bi-Di (or bi-directional) flipping of pages, locale-enabled resource bundles, date and time support, and so on. Comparing German (left) and Hebrew Bi-Di (right) page components in the simplified UI. Note the change in the direction of the arrows and positions of the text. So, developers who need to build global apps don’t have to do anything special when using Oracle ADF components, all thanks to the baked-in UX Feng Shui, as Grant Ronald of the ADF team would say to the UK Oracle User Group. • Orange Brightbox and NO-IP.com

  Strange one here i didnt know where to ask, and i know this is a developer resource but i was hoping with everyones tech know how someone may have a solution for my problem. Ok i had an orange livebox before and in the dynamic dns settings it had no-ip.com as a drop down option with login variables to update my account with a dynamic ip address. This worked great for years. However my livebox died and i now have a orange brightbox, and this doesnt have no-ip.com as a login update option for dynamic dns on my router. Does any one have any idea how i can get my domain to point to my home server with a dynamic ip address ideally for free? This is merely for testing and to have a backup server for my main remote server.

• Mysql Master-ColdMaster

  I explain my case: I'm at Amazon AWS and I want to be fault tolerant on a entire region failure. My basic problem is to have the db in sync with 2 regions. My options: Master-Master (high lag) Hand made sync every 5 minutes Master-ColdMaster?! (copy on the fly but Master won't wait the other region commit) In my system we could afford loosing a piece of data (we're not a bank) the last inserts in the db, but we could not afford more than 10 minutes of downtime. The database is small and the level of inserts is low, and I wouldn't affect the normal usage waiting other region commit. Is the 3 solution posible? And the most important, once the primary fail how we can detect and change the rol between master-coldmaster -- coldmaster-master ? Is there any clean-mode to restore between failure? Thank's!

• How to monetize and protect a engine's and its framework's copyrights and patents?

  I created a game engine that handles: Rendering levels with 2d textured curved surfaces Collisions with curved surfaces Animationn paths on and navigation in 2d-sapce I have also made a framework for: Procedural organic level generation with round surfaces Level editing Light weight sprite design The engine and framework are written in AS3 and I am in the process of translating the code into HaXe to better support other platforms. I am also interested in adding Animated curved platforms More advanced level editing features Currently, I have a part time job and any time I spend on this engine is either taken out of my limited free time (I'm a student working to support myself through school) or out my time working at my job. I really believe this engine can make life much easier for people designing Tower Defence games, Shooters and and Platformers while also possibly improving their results. It could also support RTS, RPGs and racing games very well. It continains original algorithms that could be used for procedural generation of organic round and smooth levels. The algorithms I used are new and are not available in any other level editor I've seen. In order to constantly improve the Engine and have it tested thoroughly I think the best route is releasing it to the public. What are the best ways to benefit myself and others with my new framework? I want to have some lisence, allowing me to share the framework and still benefit from it. Any advice would be appreciated. This issue has been on my mind a lot this year. I am hoping to find a solution that will bring me some relief. I am thinking of designing three sample games, releasing them and starting a kickstarter, any advice and thoughts on the matter would be valuable. My goal is like Markus von Broady suggested, to get people involved in developing the engine and let people use it for games for either a symbolic fee or for free and charge for support. That or use some form of croud sourcing. Do I need to hire a lawyer to get some sort of legal document to protect my work?

• How to mount remote samba share from local host with multiple groups?

  I am using mount.cifs to mount a remote samba share (both client and server are Ubuntu server 8.04) like this: mount.cifs //sambaserver/samba /mountpath -o credentials=/path/.credentials,uid=someuser,gid=1000 $ cat .credentials username=user password=password I mounted a user from local system with username and password with mount.cifs but the problem is that the user is part of multiple groups on the remote system and with mount.cifs I can only specify one gid. Is there a way to specify all the gids that the remote user has? Is there a way to: Mount the remote samba with multiple groups on the local system? Browse the mount from 1) with the terminal since I want to pass some files from samba as arguments to local programs. Other solutions would be: nautilus sftp:// which runs through gvfs; but the newer gnome does not write to disk the ~/.gvfs anymore so I can't browse it in terminal. And the last solution would be NFS but that means that I have to synchronize the uids and gids on the local system with the ones from the server.

• FM Transmitter for the Home

  After asking this question regarding piping music through my home I'm looking to buy an FM transmitter. I'd like to connect it to my home pc (ie. into the speaker port), and I'd then control the output with my iPhone (ie. using Apple's Remote software). The problem is, given that almost every FM transmitter is advertised to be used in the car (ie. an iTrip) it's proving very tricky knowing which one would be ideal for the home. First, has anyone tried this? Did it work ok or was there simply to much interference for it work. Secondly, if it did work ok, can anyone recommend a reasonable transmitter? For what I need it seems like an ideal solution, so given that I'm struggling to find information regarding it I'm starting to believe it's not as ideal as it first seems. Thanks in advanance.

• Need advice on framework design: how to make extending easy

  I'm creating a framework/library for a rather specific use-case (data type). It uses diverse spring components, including spring-data. The library has a set of entity classes properly set up and according service and dao layers. The main work or main benefit of the framework lies in the dao and service layer. Developers using the framework should be able to extend my entity classes to add additional fields they require. Therefore I made dao and service layer generic so it can be used by such extended entity classes. I now face an issue in the IO part of the framework. It must be able to import the according "special data type" into the database. In this part I need to create a new entity instance and hence need the actual class used. My current solution is to configure in spring a bean of the actual class used. The problem with this is that an application using the framework could only use 1 implementation of the entity (the original one from me or exactly 1 subclass but not 2 different classes of the same hierarchy. I'm looking for suggestions / desgins for solving this issue. Any ideas?

• Netbook Remix 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade using alternate iso

  I'm using Netbook Remix 10.04 now. I'm having the 10.10 alternate iso with me. If I use that iso to upgrade, will I lose my netbook version? I've seen in some forums that the upgrade resulted in a change from netbook version to desktop version. Updated on 15/12/2010 I upgraded the OS from 10.04 to 10.10. But I'm getting an error like this after restart: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep: No such file or directory I searched in the forums and got a solution like this: Open Terminal gksudo gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf change the line MODULES=most to MODULES=dep Then use Synaptic (SystemAdministrationSynaptic Package Manager) to reinstall initramfs-tools. I'll be definitely trying this later. After that when the system tries to login, my screen starts flashing with just the ubuntu netbook desktop wallpaper on the screen. No other options will be available. It will be flashing continuosly. If I press the power button then one window comes up with options like Shut down, Restart, Hibernate etc. And the screen won't stop flashing either. I've uploaded a 1 min video. • Error accessing other groups files in apache

  I am using Cloud9 IDE on my server, which creates files with default permission 640. As a result when I try to open those file via HTTP, apache shows permission denied error. When IDE is running as root user, files created belong to root:root. Also, when I see as what user is apache running, all its processes are shown to be running as root user. I cannot understand why still it cannot access files. I know if I add apache's user to group of file owner, it will work. But, I don't know which user to add. PS: I don't want to change permission of each file I create. I want less troubling solution.
